Hello, dream truck.

It was an absolutely beautiful day, with streaming sunshine and summer heat. I was the group leader for the Hot Pink rookie division. Which meant I got to wear a big old scarf around my neck in that estimable hue. So chic.

Miles of hiking through the back forests of one of our community's largest and oldest ranches, home to the State Forestry contest for all of Idaho. It's about five miles from my home. I was so honored to be a part of this proud tradition of stewardship and dedication to preserving and wisely using the priceless treasure of Idaho's forest lands.

Our own group did an amazing job - our Senior team taking second place, while our Junior team (which one of my sisters is on) took first, and with it the prestigious crosscut saw award! It was a joy to see these kids working so hard and demonstrating such a vast knowledge of the art of forestry.

Take two on my self portrait endeavors - this time with a tripod.

The neighbors were having a party ten feet away in the back yard just as I was setting up my camera. Nothing to do but plunge boldly on. The third to last pic is right when they asked me what I was doing. That's where you get to interject some highfalutin prose regarding the ambiguous title of Fashion Blogger, clinging to the last shreds of dignity in sight as they look suitably impressed by the mysterious phrase.

Ah, I love this skirt! The other eShakti clothing I've tried so far has run a little large, but this fit is perfect. It has sailboats. It has pockets. It's a most excellent shade of Kelly green.

This evening I watched the classic car parade in Sandpoint during the town's Lost in the 50s event - so much chrome! It was a blast. Coming soon.

I took these pictures alone with the self timer for the first time - and now appreciate my genius photographer sister more than ever! What you don't see is the camera propped up on a lawn chair balancing on the back step of my brother's house... I now feel the need to challenge myself with more practice in the field of self portraits. Either that, or never go anywhere without Ellen. That would be fine with me, too.

The lilacs are blooming. In the middle of May. It's surreal. And rather lovely.

The grass is lush and the young leaves everywhere are vibrant with my favorite of all colors. This is my brother's backyard - I'm having a sort of vacation in Sandpoint for a few days, and rather lovely things are happing all over the place.

I've been exploring the town on foot, and it's the most fabulous thing. All of you who live in town will have to imagine how incredibly fun it was for me to walk to the post office to mail some orders I brought with me, then swing by the library (filmmaking, Audrey Hepburn, and Hamlet!), then stroll past the bed and breakfast to photograph the flowers, saunter down Main street to look at hats in shop windows, then decide to wander through the old neighborhood district and wave to people pulling out their lawnmowers for the first outing of the year and simply take picture of things besides trees and trees and... trees.

I bought a car on Tuesday. At last, at last. This is going to entail enormous changes in my life, on the blog, and for my business. I am completely in awe at how quickly it all came together after months of waiting, fraud, mega stress, and a Police case number. It's a long, long story that I might share sometime.

For now, I'm incredibly thankful, blessed, and at peace. The most carefree I've been in a long time.

This outfit has me craving a peach smoothie and bowls of fresh blueberries and sun.

Sun sun sun. It's been crazily hot up here for May, and I have to admit I'm absolutely loving it. I don't do heat very well - I'd far rather battle cold. But after all of that battling, when I step out of my door in the early morning and feel the air warm and gentle on my face, and when I can pull the tent flaps back and kick off my shoes while I work, blissfully drowsy as the afternoon blazes away, I feel pretty good.

Amazing, in fact.

It was an unseasonably warm afternoon as the late slanting rays of Spring sun diffused through the tent walls, fingering the hat as it sat perched on a dresser.

It was a delectable concoction of ivory sinamay, trimmed with satin, a full blown white rose, and feather tips. The whole was perched in calculated grace behind the hat's brim, which turned up in front at the exact angle to blend demure with coyness.

She remembered the day that hat had been given to her, in a wonderfully small and cramped Milliner's shop on Main Street in historic Ferndale. She was driving up the Northern California coast with her Grampy. They had stopped there and he told her to pick out any hat she liked. It was a seldom in a lifetime little moment of fairytale wishes come true happiness that is often shared by Grandfathers and their grand girls - at least, the best kind that know how to do things right. The hat was sitting amongst dozens of others, but they both know it was the one.

When the trip was over, she had worn that hat on the flight home, right through security and the stares of strangers and to her seat. People watching was even more delicious from under the brim of that cover - conversations were started by grandmothers who remembered the old days when hat wearing was an art. Elderly gentleman smiled appreciatively.

Now, years later, there it sat as the sun dappled walls waved gently and tulle swirled across the worktable in massive folds. She was spreading and smoothing it into place, pinning and gathering as the tulle slowly took shape.

She took the hat up and it seemed to hold the essence of something she had been trying to grasp;

Don't be afraid. Live fearlessly, live beautifully, and it will all come to pass.

This outfit is a little puzzling. To me, it has whispers of a Spanish Doña swirled together with a lavish helping of Alice in Wonderland. I think it's the shape of the hat and the vaquero-like turn of the scarf.

It really doesn't make sense together, but I'm having fun with the possibilities.

Sometimes it doesn't have to make sense. At times, it's through the bewildering that we must carve our path of sanity.

"Which one's the Mother?" It's been a private joke for years that someday, someone will say that to us as my mom, sisters and I walk down the street.

This photoshoot was, as you might imagine, way too much fun and so very special. My mother has burned midnight oil for countless hours sewing matching dresses for all of the girls in years past, and this time, it was my turn.

"What's a pie party?" I said. Ellen looked at me as if I were daft.

"It's where everyone brings pies and we eat them," she replied.

No arguments here. Of course, I already had the old fashioned part figured out. That meant costumes. Yes.

Apple pies, crumble pies, chocolate and blueberry and quiche pies - I personally made four pumpkin, three peach blueberry, and two chicken pies. I didn't realize that I needed stress relief till I started rolling out those pastries... once I got started, they just sort of kept on going. It's balm to my soul, rolling out pie dough.

Dressing up, friends, pies... and most special of all, celebrating one gorgeous and ridiculously talented girl. Ellen, I'm so thankful for you.

Let's do this more often.

I know that many of you use google reader to view my blog and others, and sadly, it's time to find a replacement and make the blogreader switch. I've personally gone with the popular bloglovin‘ option, as you can import your existing google reader account right into their system to keep on reading as before.

Just click over to their site and register for a (free) account. They will send you a confirmation email. When you click the confirmation email you will see this:

In other news, my sister had a fabulous sweet sixteen birthday party last week! For now, suffice to say the theme was an Old Fashioned Pie Party held at the little yellow schoolhouse. Above is a sampling of the decor.

Will I ever catch up on my To Do list? There are so many, many things I want to get done. At the moment, it seems as if it would be ludicrous to try. So to combat the feeling, this has been my motto of late:

Little tiny steps.

Relentless. Focused. Most importantly, hopeful.

I found this copy of Rebecca at thrift store last month - I always love adding to my library, and I'm thrilled with this latest addition! It was published in 1940, the same year that the breathtaking Hitchcock adaptation was released, and on the title page is printed the autographs of Daphne du Maurier, Joan Fontaine, and Lawrence Olivier. Stills from the film are scattered throughout as illustrations. And, of course, Manderley house is embossed in ominous majesty on the cover.

I haven't had much time for reading lately, and have been heavily relying on audiobooks to quench my bibliophilic soul. Mainly Dickens. But every once in a while I can squeeze in time for a good read, and boy is this book worth it. This is my first of her works, and du Maurier has such a gripping, melodic writing style. Such a treat.

I'm also delighted with my thrifted Ralph Lauren blouse! This blue gingham is just so... wonderfully preppy. Loving it paired with the green linen half circle skirt, which is fast becoming a staple in my wardrobe. My favorite color, and such a classic shape. Plus, those pleated pockets! Happiness.

We had quite a full weekend... Two family birthdays, two epic parties, not to mention Friday finally feeling like a proper early summer day like we get up here every once in a while in the spring. As in, warm enough to go out in short sleeves and work like crazy on all of those outside projects that always beckon. Also, we set up The Spa for the year again! I've been waiting for it to warm up enough to get the outdoor shower going like there's no tomorrow... all winter I dream about our clawfoot tub. A hot soak is sounding amazing right about now.

It's been far too long since I've listened to Rhapsody in Blue. I realized that while I was searching though my Spotifiy library for the perfect song to go with this outfit. I'm definitely enjoying this new pattern of sharing a song with each outfit post. I get to expound a little bit more on the inspiration of the outfit, as well as the mood I'm in while writing, than I ever could by rambling on.

Plus, it takes care of what to name those pesky post titles.

This song is so drama laden, even at times disturbing. There's something about it that is impossible to understand, let alone communicate. But underlying the dissonance, the latent power, is a current of flamboyance, glamour - of bold hope that fills me with an indescribable sense of life and purpose and determination.

I hate pain.

Physical pain, yes, but especially soul pain. The kind that tears your heart and threatens to crush it. The kind that is caused, perhaps, by caring too much. Perhaps by watching someone that you dearly love drift away forever, helpless to stop them or relieve their suffering. Perhaps by feeling, at times, utterly alone and small and afraid.

My first instinct when that kind of pain hits my soul is to put up barriers, to seal off my heart from caring. It's seems so easy, not caring. Easy in the sense of flowing down stream painlessly and quietly in life. But somehow, it's easier to deal with that raw pain than it is to live life in a sealed off vacuum, cold and still and quiet.

For some reason, life is pain. As the Dread Pirate Roberts said so truly.

And I love life.

I'm discovering that living life means being strong enough to feel pain, face pain, know and conquer pain - then turn it into something beautiful and great.

Pain, I accept your challenge, and with God's strength, I will defeat you.

Because I love this life, and the God who created it, so much more than I fear any other thing.

Yesterday evening I went on a quick ride. Just a quick flick of the curry comb - as Brownie's got his winter coat flying everywhere - and on with his bridle. I love riding bareback, and I've been trying to squeeze in time for as many quick evening jaunts as I can. Spring is careening into view, and it's such an awesome way to get out and soak in the late-slanting rays of Spring sunshine.

However, this time, I did something different - I've been wanting to do this ever since I got my Nikon, and it's taken me ten months to finally work up the nerve. I think the sacred aura that's surrounded Algy is finally wearing into a more comfortable groove, and though heaven forbid I ever get careless around my precious camera, I think I'm growing in confidence and there are so many shots I've been dreaming of capturing that just seemed too far out before.

Like loping horseback down a country road, right there where you can almost feel the rippling, fluid muscles beneath you, feel the wind in your hair, see mane go flying with each stride forward. See your twin shadows go racing alongside like birds in flight.

Feel the power and sheer joy of a horse.

Though it may seem so at times, especially to myself, I do not entirely drink, breathe, and solely exist for the creation and modeling of chevron, rose and tulle skirts. It's just been a big, and admittedly engrossing slice of a very colorful pie. (Insert wild, diverse, challenging, and any other non-orthodox lifestyle descriptives there. Like nuts.)

As I write, the rain is tapping with that indescribably sweet rhythm on the roof of my bus. I love the rain. Sometimes, say, when toasted cheese with pickles and hot soup is underway and I'm getting ready to snuggle up on the sofa with my sisters for a wet afternoon, there's such a nostalgia clinging to everything. Some of my happiest memories were made during the rain.

Other times, a foggy day can put me in retrospective, sentimental mood that nothing will satiate but French accordion music and a long walk - just my dog and I. To feel the rain fall on my face, to look on the green of the world and the smell of fresh new earth is to feel so very alive.

There's a singular romance about it like no other - and I think the Rose skirt captures that feeling. It's glamorous, it's romantic, and somewhere clinging to it is a grace that evokes the charm of a rainy day serenaded by La Vie en Rose.

The Rhythm You Started by Sophie Madeleine on Grooveshark

It's hard to say, because I absolutely love each design in my skirt collection and have put a bit of myself into every one, but I think this design is my personal favorite. For one thing, it's in my very favorite color. Then, it's chevron. Chevron is the Bomb! Plus, pleats. It is impossible to argue with pleats. The intricate geometric pattens that emerge when chevron and pleats collide is irresistible.
Add de-liciously deep pockets and that pert bow...

When all of these elements coincide, I think it is safe to label the resulting concoction perfection in a skirt.

I nearly fell over when the first two tulle skirts flew off the shelves! I always find myself flabbergasted, thrilled, and vociferously cheering on the individual who joined me on my journey each and every time I'm given a sale. (Sometimes I jump up and down in my chair ridiculously, too, but we won't go there, will we?) I don't think that feeling will ever grow stale. I also get that feeling every time I interact with all of you through a comment or email - I can't tell you how much actually connecting with you means to me. It's such a tremendous privilege.

Speaking of tulle skirts, one of my relatives (not naming names) has decided to call them spider-getter-tool skirts. I suppose along the lines of a feather duster? Anyway, it cracked me up. Who knew those delightful garments were so useful?

May I talk about this song for a moment? (be sure to start the music player up at the top of the post.) It makes me so very happy. Sophie Madeline is a genius on the ukulele.

There are people in my life because of whom the rhythm that beats in my heart will never be the same. But when I listen to this song (over and over and over again, it seems), the first thing that comes to mind is Someone, my Saviour, who took the beat of my heart and forever replaced it with melodies indescribably beautiful. I love that imagery.

A peek at the rose and chevron numbers.

The Wall Tent Studio is back in business, slowly taking shape as I acquire a piece of furniture here, a new tool there. Countless hours have been logged in the last week as my precious bolts of fabric materialize into these skirts - most of those hours huddled in front of the heat, as April showers and stormy skies have arrived. The sun is here for a quick how-do today, so I grabbed some preview shots before the next curve ball hits.

These skirts are pretty special. I only hope you all love them as much as I do!

What you don't see are the fiascoes piling one atop the next in the background in a colossal train wreck, threatening to send me to the insane asylum in a pleated chevron straight jacket of my own design.

Yesterday morning, a six mile hike on the Shoreline trail.

All of that indescribable beauty. But somehow, my eyes and mind were more than mere admirers. They thrilled to the joy, the challenge, the pain and love of living. All of which are given meaning, purpose, and victory through the knowledge that my Saviour lives. Rose from the dead, redeemed humankind - me - and extends His victory to us to live with every day we that draw breath.

Because He lives. Oh, yes.

Just a little glimpse into some favorite March moments.

March disappeared in the blink of an eye. I should really figure out how to Not Blink sometime. It could come in handy in so many ways.

The monthly contra dance has been such a highlight of each month. How I love to dance!

We also had a fantastic game night with friends, complete with blanket capes, indian wrestling, intrigue, Mafia, and reporters armed with lightsaber mics. Oh, and those nerdy glasses... it all equated to epic.

Housesitting for some friends was completely great, too, as I was able to get quite a bit of prep work done on my fabric and materials for the new line in peace, quiet, and a whole lot of table space. Lookin' good.

All around me Spring is waiting, coiled, ready to dash into vibrant greens and dappled sunshine.
And my new serger machine arrived today! Completely a dream come true.

I wanted to introduce you all to my mother's Spring tea recipe - this homemade blend is a favorite in our family. This delicious concoction has a fabulous full bodied flavor, and boasts natural ingredients that will do wonders for your hair and nails, complexion and overall health as we step into Spring.

One of my favorite aspects of this tea is that nearly all of the ingredients grow wild right here on our property, and we can gather and dry them from home to have on hand. Do your research, and if you have access to wild herbs and plants, I encourage you to try it yourself! You can also purchase the ingredients packaged from places like Bulk Herb Store.

Vitamin & Mineral Tea

Red Raspberry Leaf, cut (about 3 cups)

Nettle Leaf, cut (about 3 cups)

Horsetail, cut or broken up (about 3 cups)

Alfalfa Tops (about 2 cups)

Wild Strawberry Leaf (about 3 cups)

Red Clover Blossoms (about a cup)

Rose Hips (a handful or two)

Oat Straw (about a cup)

Milk Thistle Seed (about a cup)

I just add about what I think is right until a gallon glass jar is full of the tea mix. (A gallon jar will hold about 16 cups, but if the herbs are loose, you can pack it in.) We make the tea by adding a mesh tea ball full of the mix to a gallon glass jar and filling with boiling water. Steep for at least 20 minutes.

This tea is wonderful hot or iced!
