Holy cow, guys. Remember me? It's a new season once again, one of new growth and big milestones and adventures.

It's been one year of marriage with the love of my life. A year since the seemingly endless wait (how short it was!) to start life with my bestest friend and the adventure of our life's calling together.

That day dawned in the most perfect spring morning and I remember feeling more excited and more serene than I could honestly comprehend. All sorts of hilarious things went wrong (more on that later) and everything was so perfectly beautiful and through it all I was so intensely aware of the love pervading everything.

Christopher's love, lighting up my world and making me feel like an Empress. Our friends and family, whose helping hands crafted our wedding into a thing of beauty and simplicity and contagious joy.

It was all over so soon and we were heading into our future as Us. We. Together. He was my husband. This was our first day of that beautiful story that the Lord had written just for us before time began. Everything we had experienced up to that day was preparing us to be a force united for life. Truly the Lord's love surpasses all.

It's been a crazy beautiful year. Not glamorous - no big move, no intercontinental travel yet - but all that we've accomplished together still amazes me. I can't wait to see what our future holds with the foundation built this past year.

Lots of work. Long afternoons and nights at Karate strengthening our bodies, impacting lives, making lasting relationships. Can I just say watching my husband teach is the hottest thing ever? His resolve and patience and fearless leadership melt my heart every. Single. Time. (Don't get me started on his rippling pectorals.) Moving our Karate school to our own building and all of the long nights and strategizing involved. Learning to work together as a team. Exploring trails and eating picnics on docks after nightfall. Sewing Etsy orders at the kitchen table and Star Wars marathons by our first Christmas tree. Lots of prayer. Lots of belly laughs and crying and enough kisses to get to the moon and back (we checked). Crafting big, big dreams. Making out, sleeping in, target practice and kitchen disasters and brilliant culinary triumphs - honestly, married life can be pretty close to that meme you've seen that says it's basically a sleepover every night with your best friend. Only better. There have been disappointments and revelations. Knowing and being known. Failing but always overcoming. Grace abounds.

Right after the new year, while celebrating fresh beginnings and dreaming about all our next journey around the sun might hold, the life changing moment came when we discovered we had a tiny passenger along for the adventure.

This month we celebrated our first anniversary and my first Mother's Day 23 weeks pregnant. The joy of carrying this miracle, this soul being knitted in my womb, this still-so-tiny life that made me a mother is indescribable. Surreal, but as little cumin (our cute human!) is learning to kick, punch and backflip more every day, less so. Feeling that precious baby so near to me, moving and growing and yet so mysteriously hidden, and knowing that this was planned before the foundations of the world make the tears flow in sheer gratitude at God's love and power.

The further along this journey, the more I'm enlightened to the tremendous sacrifice, privilege, weight, joy, sorrow, and calling it is to be a mom. All that my mother and all the mothers that have gone before have contributed to shaping the world is thrown into perspective like never before.

I'm humbled by the gift of my marriage and our tiny family blossoming. So imperfectly perfect.

The choices we're faced with every day together - to love harder, forgive more fully, work more purposely, seek Christ more passionately - is the greatest adventure.

In other big news, I'm working on getting the first new collection in over two years into the shop! This new season in my life called for the right clothes (that fit!), and this oh so comfortable number is the prototype to a new collection of formal and maternity gowns and tops that magically fit and make you feel fabulous. Win!

Who out there likes High low skirts? Asymmetrical hems and tulle and beaded pearls?

Like stepping into a modern fairytale, this floating, ethereal, like-none-other bridal design is my new favorite. A detachable tulle skirt that can be worn over a gown transforms the entire look and takes it to Midsummer Night's Dream caliber.

I styled it with my own bridal tiara handcrafted to match the necklace Christopher gave me for my birthday and the glinty gold ballet flats I wore on our wedding day. On a stroll down to the lake, we found this perfect wooded path with streaming afternoon light and thimbleberries galore and this gown shone.

Fairytale magic still abounds.

A week on Kauai, then road tripping up the California and Oregon coast made for a honeymoon in paradise. High adventure, unbelievable beauty, and little sleep headed the agenda, and I think it's safe to say we kicked off our new life together pretty much perfectly.

Our day was unbelievably blessed. The sky was a perfect cathedral of blue heaven rimmed with shimmering green and gold and the majestic mountains I love so much.
We were surrounded by loving faces and helping hands. Joy and beauty ran wild. We could feel God's peace and power almost as a tangible thing, wrapping around us and everyone present. The bagpipes had a mind of their own and my veil tried to eat me at the end of the isle, the dancing was crazy awesome and doing aerials in a wedding dress was much less disastrous than I anticipated. Dancing for the very first time with my husband was aaammazing.

Celebrating the end of the second-by-second countdown to becoming one with my love and the start of our forever through Christ's love.
It was absolutely the best day ever.

One of the countless awesome blessings we experienced during the planning process was meeting the VanHoutans - Daniel and Abby Jo found us through my blog, and we instantly connected through a love of all things vintage, filmmaking, and the forgotten arts. They are such an awesome couple with a beautiful family, and their talent is absolutely staggering. Having them film our wedding day was a complete joy.

All I Ask of You | Engagement Pt 1

All I Ask of You by Phantom of the Opera Movie Cast (2004) on Grooveshark

A gray, wintry day this week found Christopher and I frolicking around in our ritziest clothes with my little sister for an ENGAGEMENT SHOOT! I made my dress in December for the Christmas Swing ball, and wore my great grandmother's rhinestones. Christopher donned his Italian leather wingtips that he wears for performances with his bluegrass band. Guys, those shoes dazzle. When he plays the banjo and wears those shoes, I'm not responsible for producing logical thought processes.

We had a marvelous time and Matilda did a marvelous job, and there's more to come so stay tuned!

It's during this season that everyone gives a thought to love. Some are in a romantic relationship, some are very much not and try to drown the sorrow in chick flicks and ghirardelli's. I've always had a sympathetic feeling for both camps, but have never been able to relate to either. I've written peppy blog posts in previous years for Valentine's day reiterating just how much I love this holiday and the traditions I've woven around it. Celebrating the many loved ones in my life, reveling in femininity and flowers and period dramas and literary heroines and… chocolate. Obvious reasons are obvious.

I've never been in a romantic relationship before and I've never really bemoaned the fact, though I've given it gigantic amounts of thought as we all have. Largely due to the countless stories I've read, planted in my mind, of tales woven from the imaginations and observations of writers who capture human experience in the written word to share with others, I've grown very decided ideas about what love is. How it is manifested, communicated, expressed and delivered, assured. And I kept these ideas at the ready, waiting to see how they would be proven or stretched by the brilliant reality of Someday.

In previous years, I spent this season in the happy medium of contentment and curiosity.

This year is so different. Different from anything I've ever known. This year I'm scandalously, inextricably, crazily in love with far more than the man of my dreams. This year I'm preparing to marry him and wear his ring on my finger.

And those ideas I had?

I once read that when he took her in his arms she knew she would never be alone again. That a heart well worth winning does indeed exist - a heart that, once won, goes through fire and water for the winner, and never changes, and is never daunted.

That perfect love casts out fear.

I'm only beginning to understand just how true they are.

(Wedding preparation is well underway, and blogging seems to be coming back on the radar! This is joyous news indeed.)

One day last month I threw on my fluffy down jacket and went for a walk, camera and tripod in tow. It was the first time I'd done outfit pictures in a very long while, and it was marvelous. The simple act of creating something new, like images of an assembled outfit with a beautiful mill in the background, can be so very therapeutic.

It was a cold snap that afternoon - around 10 degrees with a whipping wind. My hands froze up and I wasn't too concerned with the camera's focus up to a point. Stumbling back to my little loft to edit pictures and thaw was quite therapeutic, too.

Also zebra print, combined with furred hoods, maximizes any outfit's warmth factor by a magnitude of at least fifty. Try it.

Waiting for Superman by Daughtry on Grooveshark

Seasons come, spinning around us with dizzying rapidity and then they're gone. There are seasons that we all look forward to, that Someday that seems to be always on the far distant horizon for your entire life. Then one day you realize that Someday has come. That Someday has been right here all along, each day slipping into the next with the moments between appearing to be small, insignificant things, yet each one momentous.

Twenty Fourteen was the first year of my life where I think I truly began to realize how near we all are to Someday. How inseparable it is to Now. How making the choice to invest patience and trust into someday will directly affect now in incredible ways that only become clear in hindsight.

I learned, experienced, felt, thought, saw, did so many things this last year that I never have before that just thinking about it all, I can feel a little smile creeping into the corner of my mouth that just won't go away. A smile of absolute joy, tempered with memories of pain endured and conquered. Hindsight gives us the grace to smile, wryly, post pain. That wryness goes along with joy, because perspective is everything to understanding and I want to constantly seek the balance.
That smile's been a long time in the making.

In exchange for it, I lost my voice for awhile - my voice to write, even for a time to know who I was.

But when we loose sight of ourselves, when everything else becomes a blur, that's when we can truly see God for all that He is to us. When the only clarity is looking at Him - that's when we can truly see were we should go next.

And let me tell you, His plans for us are so indescribably better than anything we might dream of for ourselves. Letting go and following His lead is the most incredible adventure you will ever have.

When you delight in the Lord, He will give you the desires of your heart.

That was Twenty Fourteen.

My best friend was courted, engaged, and married, and I was a Maid of Honor. I made her wedding dress, too. It was all wild and wonderful and bewildering and beautiful. I climbed a bunch of mountains and did some canoeing and some shooting and went to so many dances. I studied French for a bit and loved it, and this year my taste in music exploded and I fell in love with Daughtry and Burlap to Cashmere and Explosions in the Sky and Chris Thile and Journey and The Fray. I started karate and earned my yellow belt. Orange next. Committed.

I sewed a bunch of fun clothes that I never blogged about because reasons! Like living too hard. No excuse, I know. Because dream dresses designed for summer swing dances should be blogged!

I still plan to.

Camping and double rainbows and huckleberrying and moonlight swims and RV road trips to Montana and so many adventures with friends happened in Twenty Fourteen.

My studio has been blessed like crazy, and since releasing my first tulle skirt design in 2013 I've sewed through approximately 2500 yards of tulle.

In November I moved in to town and bought clothes hangers and thrifted twinkle lights and sacks of groceries and endless bolts of tulle and satin to set up house and shop in the second floor of my brother's new place. One of those gracious old houses you see from the street and just ache to decorate and wonder who has lived and loved and laughed inside in time past.

And now it's me, doing all those things under this roof and finding my world exploding with adventures ahead.

I packed up the wall tent snug for next year and left the bus studio to be turned into a giant dollhouse by my sisters, which is perfect. That bus is the stuff that imagination and creativity were made to live in.

But one thing I received this year eclipses all the others, is intertwined in every memory I made this year and inextricably bound to every experience I had.
Slowly, gently at first but picking up momentum as the months went by, and I knew.

Someday, that someday, had come.

Christopher had long been a treasured friendship in my life, but God didn't let it stop there.
This amazing, passionate, insanely talented human came after my heart and he won it.

The most incredible thing about this human is that rather than storing my heart in his keeping, he's led me on a journey toward Christ, walking together, pursuing Him. This heart is filled with joy overflowing.

He's asked me to ride giant roller coasters, wear a gi, punch him, listen to Daughtry, eat SPAM, drive his Jeep, Yori ashi, climb mountains, show him how to do things I love like fashion and photography and brussels sprout sautéing, sweat, shoot, ski, dance like crazy, talk shop and life and dreams, concoct spoonerisms, pray with him.

We've had the time of our lives experiencing all of it together. Somehow things I never thought I'd ever want to do (like pushups, or training Shotokan karate) have become part of the thrilling adventure called life. Training and sweating and learning new katas is an exciting challenge to constantly learn more as Christopher builds the Christian Karate dojos of Post Falls and Athol.

Besides, I've always liked to kick things.

On the evening of the 4th, Christopher asked me to go strolling in a young blizzard and watch the snow falling over the old fashioned street lamps in a sleeping town. We talked and talked about all the things and slowly froze without noticing a bit. I could see our reflections in the occasional shop window and I looked like the abominable snowman with white snow-covered hair streaming off my head like dreads. Our footprints made tracks all over the town and the quiet neighborhood streets in fresh, deep snow.
It was perfect and delicious and magical, but I certainly suspected nothing that night.

Then when the love of my life suddenly dropped to one knee under one of said lamp posts and asked me to marry him, I stood still for a moment and froze that piece of time in my memory forever.
The joy, the laughter, the pain, the adventures we've shared and those that lie ahead in unimaginable beauty.

And I said yes.

We're getting married in May. Life is unbelievably glorious and whoever came up with the idea that planning a wedding and keeping on living life and mapping out a whole brand new life together forever with your favorite person all while being engulfed with sappiness is actually a viable option should definitely either be commended or fired for their outrageous optimism.

And God is good, all the time.

We are Groot.

I had to restyle the dotty sweater from the last post so you could see how the polka dots gradiate in size on the sleeves, which, for a polka dot sweater, is just the best. Of course I didn't realize I had used said sweater twice in a row till I was uploading the pictures, but the reason and rhyme still applies.

I am so excited about this newest addition to the floor length tulle lineup! It's an incredible shade of my favorite color, and completely, absolutely perfect for all of the holiday events fast coming up. Take it to the symphony, take it to the family gathering, take it to the glitzy New Year's Eve bash.

I took mine to the city beach in Sandpoint for an arctic stroll down the pier with North Idaho's very own Lady Liberty.

Listening to this song, new to me, resonated deeply and I've been trying to explain why to myself.

There's something about the idea of a hopeless wanderer that poses a paradox.

An incurable requisite for discovery.

The need to be free, yet the longing to be held fast.

The unquenchable desire to go, go where one have never gone before and to experience to the fullest the unknown.

The determination to learn, along the way, to understand and embrace the present. It may hold a difficult lesson and the victory of mastery. Perhaps the thrilling beauty of a brilliant horizon. Perhaps uncertainty and the challenge to keep walking, in faith.

Sometimes it holds all that and more.

never neglect to love the skies you're under

and don't ever be afraid to wander.

And lastly, the road need never be walked alone.

He holds us fast, calls us each by name. He will share our road.

The middle of regal October, crowned with golden light and scarlet leaves. It's my absolute favorite.

It filled me with a craving for something vibrant in my wardrobe, a pop of red. Walking through a fabric shop last week, running my hands over the bolts of material as I strolled past (if you haven't made a habit of this, you should - it's amazingly therapeutic), I came to this rich red linen and went no further. It came home with me and became a new skirt, paired with a floral voile blouse I made last year.

I thought some of you might be craving something vibrant in your wardrobe too, and if so, you're in luck - Check it out in the shop!

Red is such an incredible color. Rich, passionate, courageous, bold.
It makes me want to dance. It makes the world spin a little faster and life sing a little louder.
Red aways seems such an assured, unafraid color.

I think, though, the only thing we should never fear is fear. Embrace it, conquer it, move forward and never let it frighten you. Overcoming, in spite of your fear, is true bravery.
Overcoming all things through Jesus Christ, His power overcoming our fears and weaknesses, is true victory.

Mmm. Dancing in this skirt is definitely recommended.

Fields of Gold

I'm excited to introduce yet another color to the floor length tulle collection! This one will match basically anything you want to pair it with - and with the holidays just around the corner, it's a dramatic, elegant, yet sweet number that will complete your style for all of those special occasions you always wanted to wear a tutu to. A black floor length tulle skirt is the stuff dreams are made of.

I thought it would look amazing with a field of gold in the background, especially as I've had Peter Hollen's new cover playing in my head all day. I went over to the neighbor's to pick up some boxes of apples for canning, and my sister and I spontaneously decided to seize the day and simultaneously the beautiful field next to the highway on the way home. The only catch was that the road wound back from behind the dump just off the main road - so I slung my camera bag and tulle skirt over my shoulder and we commenced sneakily creeping up the hill from the dump. I felt pretty hilarious doing a quick change in the middle of a hayfield with the less-than-picturesque waste depository and noisy highway stretched below us, but like I told myself, I'm trying to stretch myself a little here by doing more shoots in public places.

What, do you mean the hayfield behind the local dump does't count?

Also, I really don't know what apples have to with this shoot in any way, shape, or form, except that I snatched one (my third) from the car as we went into the field because I was famished and kept trying to sneak bites between shots. Of course a caught-in-mid-bite shot ensued, and because apples are one of my favorite parts of Autumn, and because black tulle skirts and fields of gold and apples were all happening at the same time, I just went with it.

My bestie's getting married!

I honestly can't believe that I can't come up with anything more original than the cliche I can't believe how fast it's all going by, but there it is.

Life is so incredibly fleeting, so unspeakably beautiful, so richly rewarding. Living each day to the fullest is an adventure, but also a privilege, and I've never been more aware of it than right now.

I've been spending an insane amount of time in front of my sewing machine between filling orders and sewing for the wedding. The Dress, in all it's glory, is sitting here in the bus studio awaiting the sewing on of the buttons from Tasha's mother's dress. The bridesmaids dresses are a pile of blue and lavender happiness. Stacks of tulle and satin and tulle & satin skirts are everywhere as always, and life is good.

I shot these two adorable people (along with Alex - see some of his work here) on a sultry early August afternoon, with dramatic clouds rolling by and a soft summer breeze that steadily crept into a full-on gale. The last shot taken, crashing thunder, lightening and pouring rain sent us running for the house, and we all lolled on the living room floor watching the storm with all the lights out.

And played Candy Land. Tasha won.

Of all the colors in the glorious spectrum of beautiful color on this earth, there's something about new, sun-dappled, sumer leaf green that washes my soul like no other.

I've been thinking about color lately. About what an amazing communication medium it is, especially when combined with another expressive communication medium like fashion. Fashion, communication, and color are all very near to my heart, and walking in a richly laden orchard on a summer afternoon is like a glimpse into the heart of all three.

Golden moments sparkle around a green that is new life and sheer joy. Shot through with the rich red that proclaims assurance, passion, radiance.

My best friend went and got herself engaged two weeks ago, and everything I ever imagined about that day as a little girl was far surpassed with the true joy and excitement and beauty that is always so much more brilliant in reality than we can ever imagine.

God is so good.

The Wall Tent Returns

I went out and just sat on the porch for awhile today - my porch.

The plywood creaked a little when I moved - such a familiar sound, as was walking to the back of the room and hearing the boards gently groan under each step. And the afternoon sunshine filtered through the trees overhead and dappled the walls and ceiling, moving softly in the breeze, in the way I love so much.

A group of my friends and I had an awesome time moving the tent over to it's new summer site by the bus a few days ago, and I can't wait to finish scrubbing everything and set it up as the Wall Tent Studio summer adventure headquarters!

Mildred, the wild kitty who roams the woods at large and has never come near me since I closed up the tent last fall, appeared out of nowhere while I was sitting there and literally started caressing the canvas, the poles, the porch itself. Her glossy back arched and her purring was the epitome of a satisfied feline.

It was as if she looked at me and said;

"This is back to the way things should be, and I am in my rightful place again."

I felt the same.
