My time has finally come. I always thought living in San Francisco would be an impossible goal for me—let alone finding a job in the city that would advance my career. Now, I can cross both those off!

It was a dark and cloudy day…

Seattle is a great city and I loved living there, but I did get tired of the grey, overcast days. Once I experienced the dark, short Winter days I knew it was time to leave.

I started looking for jobs in San Francisco and I ran into a place called, Inkling. Their website explained how their goal was to bring an interactive learning experience to devices like the iPad and iPhone. Long story short, I applied and was scheduled for an interview. I was absolutely blown away with not only their product, but with their passionate set of talented designers and engineers. I was fortunate enough to be offered the Interactive Designer position and now here I am… living and working in San Francisco.

Welcome to San Francisco

San Francisco is great, though they make it difficult for you to own a car and live in the city. During my first week here, I ended up getting a parking ticket for failing to move my car during street cleaning. What’s up with that?! I end up commuting to work via local transit because parking around there is hard to fine and expensive.

All-in-all, I love living here. I never doubted for a second that is would be a great experience for me. There still is a lot to see and explore around here and I’m excited about that. Home sweet home.

Resist Today is a web site filled with unique artist-made t-shirts, wallets, messenger bags, pillows, neck ties and fine art prints. Being a small group of hard working artists, you can almost see the amount of care each item presents on their site. All items are treated as finely crafted art pieces.

My First Wallet

It’s been five years since I bought my first Resist Today wallet and I’m still surprised how well it holds up. I literarily had this wallet with me everyday for the past five years. You can see how the screen-printed elements are slightly faded and how the corners are worn from handling over the years. The quality is definitely top-notch!

My New Wallet

I recently made the choice to purchase a new Resist Today wallet. My decision went to the Corporate welfare redux wallet. The detail on this wallet is amazing and also includes “Awesome inside printing” to keep me and my cash happy. It’s the little details that make it worth having.

The Size

One of things I consider when looking for a wallet is its size. Keeping the wallet in my front pants pocket is my preference—so having a weird bulge to the side of my skinny jeans can totally mess up my pimp walk. Fortunately, this wallet keeps very thin, even when filling up all 6 credit card slots.

I was born and raised in Florida—where you basically have to drive everywhere you want to go. Luckily, almost all my destinations had large lots where I could easily park my car.

Earlier this year, I made a huge change in my life and drove across country to live in Seattle, WA. The moment I entered the city, I found myself doing a crash course in parallel parking. This instantly scared the crap out of me! I never had to parallel park before. I don’t even think I needed to test for parallel parking when I got my license in Florida. Living in a big city like, Seattle, you have no choice but to be forced to learn how to squeeze your car in between two others all while impatient drivers wait for you to move out of their way.

For the first few months I had to basically try anything I could to get my car into those spaces. Obviously, I learned all the wrong ways to park before learning the right way. I had this idea that I needed to jump into it and learn from my mistakes as they came about. “Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk,” as Tony Stark would say.

I wanted to share with you the “methods” that I found some-what successful. These are by no means explaining the proper way to park, but to show you my sad attempts.

Double Space Round Up

The key here is to plan ahead and drive around until you see two open parking spots where you could easily sweep into one and position yourself into the other. This method involves having just as much luck as it does patience. You could even say this method is cheating mainly because it doesn’t require any skills at all. But for some reason, I get this odd feeling of accomplishment when I find two vacant parking spaces that are actually next to each other. It’s almost like fate brought me to this spot at this time and granted me a stress-free parking job. This type of parking doesn’t happen very often, but when it does you almost automatically say, “Oh, sweet!”

Over the Curb Drop Down

Excluding the high curb spots, this method only works if your car is able to drive over a low curb and plop itself into position. Due to the height of their tires, trucks and SUV’s would be the ideal vehicles for this method. I learned the hard way that any other vehicle (including my sadly curb-damaged Scion) could risk scraping the rim as it drives off the curb.

Jig Saw Cut-In

The technique here is to drive your car back and forth into the space—slowly inching your way closer to the curb. Of all three methods, this has to be the most embarrassing and pathetic way to parallel park. You are immediately labeled a “parallel parking newbie” the moment other drivers see what you are trying to do. That’s okay. It does work, but it might take a couple of minutes to reach your goal.

I was one of many people who became a believer of an unusual marketing stunt from a Seattle-based seafood restaurant. The Ivar’s restaurant chain chose to use a “hoax” as a form of advertisement. What could have been a disaster ended up being a successful marketing ploy.

The Story

Ivar Hagund, the founder of the seafood restaurant, had a reputation for creating outlandish marketing schemes to promote his Ivar’s chain in the early 1940’s. A local ad agency used Hagund’s reputation as leverage to help deploy a hoax on the city. A rumor was created that Hagund placed underwater billboards around the sound, advertising his business to local submarine traffic. Sketches of billboards and maps the of possible locations were fabricated to help aid the hoax. In August of this year, one of Hagund’s rumored billboards was supposedly found and hoisted out of the water.

It turns out these billboards were constructed earlier this year and dropped into the sound. By leaving the signs in the water for months, algae and barnacles attached to the billboards—giving them a more “authentic” look.

The Seattle Times stated that:

“...about $250,000 was spent on the hoax and the follow-up TV and radio ads and real highway billboards.”

Advertising the Hoax

Like any highway sign, Hagund’s billboards were displayed in public. I was amazed to actually see them in person. Even though they were placed alongside regular billboards, I would imagine how they would have looked if I was in a submarine passing by these underwater signs.

I have to admit I was deeply disappointed when I found out the whole thing was a marketing prank. Part of me wanted to believe someone was kooky enough to advertise to the underwater demographic. Even still, I have to applaud Ivar’s for coming up with a unique way to promote their restaurant and their .75 cent cup of chowder!

I’ve been wanting to build my own blog for quite some time. Up until now, I’ve only had my online portfolio to showcase my work. Optimistically, by creating this blog I would be given the motivation to write more and gain a larger presence on the web.

I designed this site to act as a personal “achievement tracker”. Each post will be about a personal victory with a custom merit badge designed to show-off the achievement. The idea wasn’t to be taken seriously. My goal for the site was to not only help me write, but to also encourage me to creatively think of how to present my thoughts to anyone who is willing to read them.

As far as how this site was made, I chose to use ExpressionEngine to be the wizard behind the curtain. This content management system has constantly proven to be as flexible as I need it to be. I also decided to use sIFR to display Sentinel, an awesome typeface that I’ve been dying to work with.

If you’ve liked what you see, there is probably a good chance you’ll want to see more of what this site has in store. I invite you to follow me on twitter or subscribe to the feed.
