I'm an early career librarian; I graduated with my MLIS in December 2009 and began my current- and first- full-time position in a library two years ago.

I benefit greatly from ACRL membership. When I unexpectedly became the liaison to the Department of Anthropology, ANSS connected me with librarians with knowledge and experience in anthropology, sociology and related fields. Serving as an Intern on the ACRL/IS Instruction Technologies Committee allows me to engage professionally while continuing to learn and teach about the impact of technology on instruction. Finally, I recently participated in the ACRL Immersion ’12 Teacher Track Program. In addition to enhancing my own instruction skills, the Immersion experience is enabling me to effect change in my own library and better support my colleagues in their teaching and learning.

Hi to Steven (we met when you spoke at the Alabama Association of College & Research Libraries annual meeting- chapter affiliation is another opportunity and benefit offered by ACRL!) and many thanks to ACRL for presenting me and other early career librarians with these opportunities.

We have just one submission form for program proposals, which can be used by both individuals and individuals submitting proposals with co-presenters.

The following proposal instructions are applicable to individuals: https://s4.goeshow.com/acrl/national/2013/abstract_instruct.cfm

Here is the online proposal submission form you should use: https://s4.goeshow.com/acrl/national/2013/abstract_submission.cfm

You can select “Contributed Paper” as the session format type on the online proposal submission form; it sounds like that is the session format you are interested in.

Thanks!

That's good to know! Yes, I knew about the communities of practice (though I didn't realize that's how they are referred to), as I am able to pick those when I renew my membership each year. But I'm glad the Discussion Groups are part of the package, so to speak, as I navigated over to the list of current groups and saw at least two which I'd like to join.
Good question Donna. Since you are already an ACRL member you can join as many of our discussion groups as you'd like - there is no additional fee. As part of your membership you can join three communities of practice - but no more than two sections. CoP includes sections and interest groups. If you did want to join more than three, any others would carry a fee of $5 each. You can join a discussion group by visiting their ALA Connect space.

I have a question that shows how much (or little) I know about ACRL membership (I've only been a member for a year now, being young in the profession). Is membership in Discussion Groups tied to dues? Or can one join a Discussion Group free of monetary cost?

I need someone to explain to me why SOPA is bad for public libraries. Hopefully this will hold members accountable to real communication. Going beyond personality, passion and procedures, I try to ask each person do they have something to contribute.
Margot, you're reading what I'm reading! Matteson's book is incredible - he has a particular understanding of spirituality which helps him paint a much more complete portrait of Bronson Alcott. Richard Francis' book on Fruitlands is amazing too.

As a colleague of Martin's I heartily applaud the choice of Martin as member of the week. He is a true library leader, not just in academic circles, but in public, school, and special, especially in Colorado. He has influenced many future library leaders by teaching ethics of librarianship at the University of Denver, and is a VERY active member of the Colorado Association of libraries. So many of us, even those who have been in the library biz a LOOONG time have learned from Martin. He makes us remember why we went into librarianship in the first place.

If you would like to see just how much Colorado loves Martin, check out http://tinyurl.com/3tl9av8 to see Martin with two of his fan club members. That's right, there is an OFFICIAL Martin Garnar Fan Club!!

As one of the Managers of the Martin Garnar Fan Club, I can tell you he is such a joy to stalk at conferences and other library events. We follow waiting for pearls of wisdom to drop from his lips, and we are never disappointed.
