I need someone to explain to me why SOPA is bad for public libraries. I may seeing the issue incorrectly, but it seems to me that getting rid of some of the free misinformation on the Internet would only help bring more patrons to realize the importance of public libraries. Here in Suffolk County NY we offer an excellent selection of online resources through our "live-brary.com" site. This service provides some of the highest quality paid databases. You get what you pay for and free information is often not very good. So please, I mean this, I'm open to hearing all sides, why is SOPA bad for public libraries? Thanks.

[...] It’s difficult as librarians to admit when we can’t find, or don’t know, the answer to a query. I think this attitude often filters into our daily life, and can infiltrate our participation in meetings, and our inclination to volunteer to participate on committees that we fear we may be filled with a language that is unfamiliar to us. As we all know beginning a new job, traveling, taking on a new hobby, or even reading email from a colleague can sometimes require us to learn a new language, and risk not knowing the answers, or how to articulate a question. This week Steven Bell has a great post over at ACRL on speaking up in the workplace. [...]

I agree with the quote from Merchant. "Minority viewpoints" are essential to advance action agendas. In my experience with professional and personal organizations and taskforces, I've been heard yet not acknowledged/listened to. The discussion will continue until a more seasoned member shares the same idea/sentiment and it is welcomed. I like that you utilize the Plus/Delta method. Hopefully this will hold members accountable to real communication. Going beyond personality, passion and procedures, I try to ask each person do they have something to contribute. (By the way, in the Greek, Delta means change.) My two cents for a slow afternoon in Indiana. :)

Margot, you're reading what I'm reading! Matteson's book is incredible - he has a particular understanding of spirituality which helps him paint a much more complete portrait of Bronson Alcott. Richard Francis' book on Fruitlands is amazing too.

I blog about the Alcotts regularly at http://louisamayalcottismypassion.wordpress.com. I've posted a bit on Francis' book, and will be soon posting on Matteson's book.

As a colleague of Martin's I heartily applaud the choice of Martin as member of the week. He is a true library leader, not just in academic circles, but in public, school, and special, especially in Colorado. He has influenced many future library leaders by teaching ethics of librarianship at the University of Denver, and is a VERY active member of the Colorado Association of libraries. So many of us, even those who have been in the library biz a LOOONG time have learned from Martin. He makes us remember why we went into librarianship in the first place.

If you would like to see just how much Colorado loves Martin, check out http://tinyurl.com/3tl9av8 to see Martin with two of his fan club members. That's right, there is an OFFICIAL Martin Garnar Fan Club!!

As one of the Managers of the Martin Garnar Fan Club, I can tell you he is such a joy to stalk at conferences and other library events. We follow waiting for pearls of wisdom to drop from his lips, and we are never disappointed.

Martin Garnar is ALWAYS my favorite member of any team, every week! He is so dynamic, fantastic, well-dressed, and he kills at being organized in meetings.
And just to let everyone know how cool he is, he's got a fan club on Facebook! It's called the Martin Garnar Fan Club and everyone (but Martin) should request to join!

[...] From ACRL insider: To support its scholarly communications initiatives, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is pleased to announce the 12-month appointment of Joy Kirchner as visiting program officer. Kirchner will play an integral role in supporting one of ACRL’s new strategic goals (ACRL Plan for Excellence), that will help librarians accelerate the transition to a more open system of scholarship. Kirchner will work with members and staff to develop a sustainable model for the Scholarly Communications 101 workshop, support the work of the Scholarly Communications Committee and develop other initiatives to advance ACRL’s work in this area.
Micquel in three words: playful, pert, puntilious.

Two books she should consider also reading: Sociopath Next Door, Invisible Gorilla.

With members as interesting as Micquel perhaps I too will contemplate joining ACRL.
