I’ve always been captivated by unrequited love or the fear thereof. Apparently I’m not alone according to wikipedia which states 98% of us feel it at some point in our lives. Because of this, it seems that unrequited love is love, actually. Whether it’s a relationship that’s not reciprocated 50/50 (does that exist?) or a relationship that cannot be realized. Unrequited love is love, actually, more often than not.

The film clip above is from Wong Kar Wei’s “In the Mood for Love”. In the scene two unrequited lovers pass each other out in public. This scene is used as visual and musical motif throughout the film.

The inability of the unrequited lover to express and fulfill emotional needs may lead to feelings such as depression, low self-esteem, anxiety and rapid mood swings between depression and euphoria. A universal feeling, by some estimates affecting 98% of all people during their lifetimes,[4] unrequited love has naturally been a frequent subject in popular culture………

‘There are two dark sides to unrequited love, but only one is made familiar by our culture’[7] – that of the lover, not the rejector. In fact research suggests that the object of unrequited affection experiences a variety of negative emotions on a par with those of the suitor, including anxiety, frustration and guilt.[4] As Freud long since pointed out, ‘when a woman sues for love, to reject and refuse is a distressing part for a man to play’,[8] and vice versa. The role of the rejector will often force them to ‘feel morally repugnant and guilty’; and whereas the unrequited lover may always retain some hope, ‘the rejector’s potential outcomes are nearly all bad’.[9]

Just wanted to announce that I was recently attached to direct a film called Heartprints. Excited about it because I get to do something different this time…. Drama! It’s good to get a break from comedy every once in a while. You guys know I like to mix it up! We’re going to try and do something different with this film. Stay tuned.

Feels like editing a music video but a whole lot harder. Especially when it’s a pitch trailer and the entire film is not shot yet. It’s kinda like making a music video where you also have to write and sing the song. Above is an iphone screen shot of a trailer image.

Labor Day Weekend Rest…. Not!

This past weekend was labor day weekend. It’s usually a time to relax, eat bbq and reflect on how hard you’ve been grinding that year. This labor day weekend for me was more of a lesson in endurance and hard work so it really felt more like every other day this year. I spent Saturday at USC prepping for a Sunday shoot and also had a chance to catch some of the game. That night I went to a birthday party for my assistant Erin White who I really need to dedicate a whole blog posting towards because she’s awesome and has been a good assistant. I’m loosing her soon to D.C and I know I’m going to have a very hard time replacing her.

Sunday we had a 7AM call time at USC. Yeah 7AM is tough but I can’t complain because I suggested that call time. The shoot was for a webseries I’m working on with Al Thompson and Terry Gingles who both make grown man ish so I jumped at the opportunity to work with them. After the shoot was over I went out to NoHo to break bread with the production team on another film I’m working on with Kimberly Woods. We worked together on Good Grief and we’re making changes to the script and spent some time trying to find the voice of the film. I’m excited about this film because it gives me a chance to make something different. I love comedy but have been wanting to do drama again and now I have the opportunity and that’s exciting. I also enjoy projects that work across multiple cultures and this film does that as well. Expect something different from me on this one.

Monday I was a model in a photo shoot for my friends clothing line. I’m not saying anything more about that. I’ll reserve judgment until I see the images. However I’m acutely aware of how I look at all times… so to relinquish that control was an experience. I spent the rest of the day editing Legalize Me. Mike and I are close to picture lock and I’m very excited to be on this journey with him. We are both excited about sharing it with the world. I know it’ll be a life changing journey. In many ways he feels like a brotha from another mutha although I’m not sure he even has a mom… Wait no I did see a photo of her at his sisters house.. lol And I did meet his aunt (maternal) so I guess she does exist. I’m sure I’ll get to meet her one day. Maybe at the screening but hopefully I don’t have to wait that long.

Unless of course if you get this case that lets you mount it to a tripod and attach a shotgun mic.

Really? Is this for real?

After I stopped laughing at the shotgun mic, I realized an actual real world use for this tripod mountable case. Video village and not production! It would be cool to mount your ipad to a stand and watch what the camera is recording. Sure beats renting a monitor for this purpose with all the ipads already running around. Another possible use would be multicam live show directing.

Filmmaking and Motorcycle Riding…

Have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Except maybe that both can be stressful! People often ask me why I ride and it’s simple. I get a freedom from it that is unlike anything else. Freedom to go anywhere (because you’re so small on the bike). Also a freedom of fear that you get too. And I can get around LA much faster.

Who got the props?

Sony pictures that’s who. I haven’t been to the prop house in forever. The current project I’m working on doesn’t have a production designer yet (and may not have one at all) so I got my hands dirty over at Sony today.

The prop house has everything you need and a universe of things you don’t need. I don’t need chairs so I keep moving.

I put a prop shotgun on hold for a pawn shop scene that’s mad funny. Gotta go back for more! Stay tuned!
