I never had the pleasure of seeing you perform in "Beckett," but I much enjoyed your performance in "Alone Together" in Naples, put on by the Naples Players. I particularly liked seeing it "back stage."

I remember the first time that I set my mind on obtaining a goal, and accomplished it. I was 16 years of age. A shy girl, I decided to try out for a school play in order to rid myself of that pesky shyness. I confided my plans to my mother. She warned me not to be too disappointed if I didn't get a part. She didn't wish to see me hurt. And, I actually didn't believe that I had much chance of landing a role, but I envisioned becoming a part of an exciting group. Then, I entered the auditorium where the try-outs were being held . . .

The Play was Beckett, the story of Thomas Beckett, the Archbishop of Canterbury and his tumultuous relationship with King Henry II and his romance with a Welsh Princess named Gwendolyn. The Director instructed us to acquaint ourselves with the script and various roles before signing up to try out for a particular part. I skimmed through the screenplay. My heart started beating faster. I looked around at the other girls, at the boys. I held my breath a moment. I would try out for the role of Gwendolyn, Beckett's mistress. And, I would win the role. I would do what it took to take that part. I thought quickly about what it would take.

Many other girls also decided to try out for Gwendolyn. I listened carefully to each and every one of their performances. When my name was called, I stood up and read. Afterwards, I marveled at my own prowess, at my calm recital tinged with subtle emotion. But, most of all, I wondered at how I had managed the English accent.

After the last girl had read, the director looked down at his notes. He stood and called my name. He then asked me to stand next to young man who had been chosen to play the part of Beckett. I did as he requested. He then stated: I just wanted to make sure that Steve was taller than you. He then turned to the crowd in the auditorium and announced: Karen Sogoloff as Gwendolyn.

My interest in theater continued through most of my life. I landed roles in professional theater in Boston and community theater in Naples, Florida. More importantly, the experience of auditioning for much sought after roles prepared me for a career in real estate and obtaining much sought after clients and listings.
