Way, Way, Way back machine, The Internet Archive

Teri Lussier posted a blog today on communication and touched on something we'd been chatting about - writing so that in 10 years you'll not be embarassed by it.

One of the responses to her blog mentioned the Internet Archive so I thought I'd give some info on it as I've been a frequent user.

Started in 1996, the internet archive has indexed billions, 85 billion to be exact, webpages - yes indeedy, your past can come back to haunt you!

I've managed some php based websites and about 8 months ago one of our servers was hit by a trojan. Most everything was saved, except for our "blogroll type" data. I was able to access the archive and rebuild in a matter of hours what would have taken days without.

Here is the link

Internet Archive

From their site

"The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Founded in 1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages in our collections."

The Internet Archive is also known as The Way Back Machine.

The Website is worth checking out even if you don't see a use for it at this time. It is a non-profit org that takes a "snapshot" of the global web. A user must know the URL of the site as it does not support keyword searches at this time.

Sadly a month ago Microsoft pulled the plug on the deal they had with Internet archive to scan millions of book and make the available. I feel fairly sure someone else will step on to the plate on that one.

They also offer web collections of topics such as the 2005 Tsunami and September 11th.

Lake Powell Area Travel Release - Arizona Department of Transportation

This hit the airwaves this morning, June 19, 2008 and is going to affect travel to and from Lake Powell from the South for several months.

Driving through "the cut" by Bitter Springs, AZ, up or down the mountain pass, coming to or going from the Page - Lake Powell area is going to be significantly more difficult as they upgrade the road.

Here is the news release from the Arizona Department of Transportation

**************

Construction Delays Expected on US 89 South of Page

June 18, 2008 BITTER SPRINGS -

Drivers on US Highway 89 south of Page, Arizona, should expect delays this summer, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). Beginning Monday morning, June 23, 2008, ADOT will begin a new roadway improvement project just north of the US 89A junction and the community of Bitter Springs, which will extend north through “the cut” toward Page and Lake Powell.

Initially, drivers should expect daily changes in traffic patterns, and some project work will require restricting the roadway to one lane. During lane closures, flaggers and pilot vehicles may guide motorists through the project area. Speed limits in the project area will be reduced to 25 mph. Also, vehicle travel lanes will be restricted to widths of 10 feet or less during construction hours. Travelers should plan for delays of approximately 30 minutes.

Hours of construction will be 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. (MST), Monday through Thursday, from June 23 through July 10. However, during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, all lanes will be open beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 7. Construction hours and traffic control measures are expected to change in mid July to accommodate paving operations; periodic updates will be available on the project hotline and Web site. Also, drivers should expect increased truck traffic on US 89 between Gray Mountain, Arizona, and the project area.

As part of the $3.9 million project, workers will replace the pavement from milepost (MP) 524 to MP 531. The project also includes resurfacing existing paved turnouts, striping and signing, installing guard rail, seeding and completing other related work. ADOT anticipates work will be completed by mid September. ADOT advises motorists to drive safely as construction crews will be working on the roadway throughout the duration of the project. Motorists must obey all posted restrictions throughout the project area. Message boards and other traffic signs will provide additional construction details.

Living next to a huge lake, much of what happens in our communities and in our business is directly tied to what happens with the Lake. I think most folks who live and work near a large recreational area have the same situtation.

For several years now Lake Powell has been experiencing drought conditions and just this year, we seem to be breaking out of it. The Cut at Castle Rock has been closed for more than three years, which saves boaters and average of an hour plus 12 miles as they head up lake. Just a week ago, the CUT Opened.

Lake Powell Water Data is an awesome site which tracks not only inflow, outflow, average land temperature and average water temperature but also what launch ramps, and passage ways are open.

Fax Machines or MyFax.com

Ok - to start with, I don't work for myfax.com, just think it is a great service.

Where I live getting an additional phone line is almost painful, not to mention time consuming and troublesome. The monthly phone expense and the cost of the fax machine made me reconsider the standard fax machine - phone line route.

As a side note I have a wonderful scanner.

I decided a couple of weeks ago to check out myfax.com. Wowzers.

For ten bucks a month you get a fax number (I did the toll free variety). Clients send faxes to that number and they end up in two places. On my myfax.com control panel website and in my EMAIL in box.

To send, scan, save, login or type in number hit send. Too cool.

For anyone looking for an easy fax work around check out myfax.com

Cheers!

The Ongoing Mortgage Mess, Hud, the big three, etc..

In an attempt to try and get a grip on what has happened in the mortgage mess I read a lot. Tonight there was a interesting article on MSNBC (see article here) about the part HUD, Housing and Urban Development, has played in the current situtation. That situtation being the expected 3 to 4 million people who now own homes and can not afford the high-interest rate sub-prime loans they received. It seems like there is all manner of finger pointing going on over whose fault this is. From the article "Eager to put more low-income and minority families into their own homes, the agency required that two government-chartered mortgage finance firms purchase far more "affordable" loans made to these borrowers. HUD stuck with an outdated policy that allowed Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to count billions of dollars they invested in subprime loans as a public good that would foster affordable housing. "

The problem is as well tho, who ok'd the borrowers for loans in the first place. The HUD policy now ends up hurting the people it was trying to help.

So going back further, who issued these loans? Another article over at Bloodhound Blog, points to the big three ~ Countrywide, WaMu, and Wachovia. Countrywide and WaMu have been in the news a lot and in the last few days Wachovia's CEO has been forced to resign. Wachovia's reported losses were doubled what they had forecast.

Then there were the rating agencies, like Standard and Poors, who rated high risk loans low, or lower than they should have been, making them more affordable. Had that not been the case loans would have been more expensive having the effect of putting the breaks on.

Let's not forget the borrower. The borrowers were given a gloss story, they bought it, hook, line and sinker. But in the end it is the borrower who needs to be educated, to some degree, before signing something that has the potential to ruin many years of their life. I hear loosing a home is no fun at all. On the flip side, the borrower must hold some of the responsibility for their own financial decisions.

From the MSNBC article: "Judith Kennedy, president of the National Association of Affordable Housing Lenders, said that while Fannie and Freddie nurtured unregulated subprime lenders, an estimated 30 percent of subprime borrowers could have qualified for safe, lower-cost prime loans. "

30%?? While not being a huge fan of regulation, it's hard to understand how so many entities were playing the system, making a ton of money and no one stepped up to the plate.

Some saw it coming, maybe many did, but it is some sort of a disaster when 30% of the people need not even be involved and yet are.

Lake Powell Water Level May 26th Update - Utah

Lake Powell's water level continues to rise this week to the tune of 6 to 9 inches a day. As of last Friday the lake crossed the less than 100 feet low threshold ~ an exiting event! In another ten days or so we would expect the Lake Powell Castle Rock Cut to be open again and boaters happily heading upstreeam without the 11 mile detour to Glen Canyon Dam.

Currently the rivers that feed Lake Powell are running at 124% of normal. By the time July rolls around the lake should be about 61 feet below full, the highest it has been since 1999. For locals and tourists alike this is a joyous event. Also power production at the dam will be increased about 12% over last year with the higher water levels.

The CUT at Castle Rock being opend means less gas used to get upstream and out of Wahweap Bay. Tourists and tour operators a like are thrilled at this prospect. It is such a problem with the Cut is closed that the National Park Service had proposed a plan to dredge the Cut this spring. The wet winter and cool, wet spring has made that unnecssary.

Overall Lake Powell is expected to increase 50 verticle feet this spring run off year. Good news for the west as Lake Powell is the savings account of water used by the downstream states of Arizona, Nevada, California and the country of Mexico.

Lake Powell Photos - thought I would share as the storm rolled in

I was driving home this afternoon from Page, AZ to Big Water, Utah and there was a storm blowing in. I decided to take five and shoot a couple of photos. The Lake Powell area is truly unique and when the storms blow in, wow.

95% of Lake Powell is in Utah, 5% in Arizona, but the business side is mostly Arizona. The Glen Canyon Dam as well as Wahweap Marina are both on the Arizona side of the line.

I sized these down to about 1/2 of what they were shot at but the clarity still looks good.

The top two photos are in Arizona and the bottom one in Utah. Stateline Marina is the dividing line and is just out of the photo to the right in the bottom picture.

The Lodge is behind the trees. Castle Rock is the large rock on the left. In another two months there will be water over the land to the right of Castle Rock making an easier passage up lake. As the lake is coming up just under six inches a day right now crews have to wench up the docks and marina so that it stays attached to the land.

The Coves is a great swimming spot!

Pictures, Blogs, Genealogy, Where does it all end up???

Barbara posed an interesting question this morning

that got me thinking....

I've been doing genealogy for about 30 years. When my great-grandmother died all of her journals and books got put in an aunt's garage. Several years later, like ten, I found them and held on to them for many more years. As technology changed, I scanned several of the journals and things that looked like others would enjoy - burned them on disk and sent them out to other family members.

And the the big lesson: my mom-in-law passed in New Orleans just prior to Katrina. We went down there for four months to help her pass and then settle the estate. I took my scanner and laptop and scanned a little over 1000 photos. People thought I was nutty (or worse!) Six weeks after returning to the high, wind-blown deserts of Southern Utah, Katrina gathered up the photo collection, which was now in Bay St. Louis, Miss (ground zero) and carried them out the the Gulf of Mexico.

I have wondered why I felt possessed to scan the photos. Several relatives called right after Katrina saying they could not believe I had scanned all of the photos. The following year each descendant of the great grandparents received a DVD of the ancestral photos. Where does it all end up? I don't know but digitizing the grandma and grandpa papers takes a bit of time, but as things move forward those who are the guardians of the information can change the formats.

Page Lake Powell, Arizona has a new Police Chief

Page Lake Powell has a new police chief, Charles Dennis. Chief Dennis is coming to Page from Idaho where he has held two different positions as Deputy Sheriff.

Chief Dennis and his wife have four children, one who just joined the Army. Apparently none of them are going to miss the snow in this move to the high, wind-blown desert of Northern Arizona.

He feels it is going to take him 3 to 4 months to get caught up with everything here, but that there are no large problems looming in the city right now that require immediate attention.

Page is a community of about 8,000 residents but we will see about 1 million less tourists here a year than at the Grand Canyon. Some years that can be 2 million folks, other times 4. Page police have a unique responsibility to keep the residents and visitors safe which can be challenging when many of our visitors do not speak English.

There is also the responsbility for the Chief to work closely with Navajo Nation law enforcement and keep good lines of communication open.

Both Big Water, Utah and Page, Arizona now have new head law enforcement officers in the last 30 days.

We send them our best wishes.

Lake Powell Arizona Utah Real Estate Blog

Big Water, Utah gets a new Marshall

On April 15th, 2008 Gary Patterson became the new Marshal in Big Water, Utah.

His background is with the Navy, which he joined shortly after high school, and years of service in the National Guard. He is a Georgia native who decided he loved the desert south-west and with that... wah lah, we have a new Marshal.

Big Water is a tricky area because the small amount of residents (420) does not indiciate the work level. Lake Powell is a tourist area and sees about 1 million visitors less a year than the Grand Canyon. Many of the visitors will travel on highway 89 through Big Water as they head to Lake Powell, The Grand Canyon, Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon.

One of the large challenges has been to get everyone to slow down on the highway. Recently the speed limit was reduced from 65 to 55 and that is helping. We are also getting two more turn lanes in East Big Water.

Big Water has been without a Marshal since Gil Trujillo left in October of 07 to help train police forces in Iraq.

The winter months in Big Water can be very slow, but it is nice to have the new Marshall prior to the height of the tourist season.

Big Water is fortunate to have someone with officer Patterson's background in the position as the Marshall.

Lake Powell - Wahweap Bay, A Short History

This area was pretty well teaming with human life since about the year 400. There was no lake but the Colorado River was nearby. The bay in the photo is Wahweap Bay. Wahweap means "bitter water". The Colorado, before the dams, was either raging in the spring with the snow melt, or 90 degrees and a wall of moving mud in the late summer, early fall. The native Americans built some villages on the shores of tributaries of the Colorado, but not on the river itself.
Wahweap only had water flowing in it during spring run off, or during the monsoon season in the summer. The water would stagnate in pools and become unsafe to use. It is thought they named it Wahweap as a warning to their own children and to other's passing through of the danger of the stagnant water.

The Mormon Pioneers got to this area about the same time as John Wesley Powell, the 1860's. I plan on doing posts on Lee's Ferry - one heck of a story there with the graveyard and the only crossing of the Colorado for hundreds of miles. It's also one of my favorite places to hang out today.

Art Greene was one of the next really influential people in the area leading tours not only down the Colorado river, but opening a trading post and leading folks to Rainbow Bridge. Greenehaven, Arizona is named after him.

The Glen Canyon Dam was started in 1956 and finished in 1966. Waweap creek then filled up and became Wahweap Bay on Lake Powell!

Lake Powell is coming up 4 vertical inches a day this last week. It is projected to see a 50 foot increase in vertical elevation which will make this photo look much different by the first of July.

For more information

The Lake Powell Arizona Utah Real Estate Blog

Lake Powell Property in Greenehaven Arizona - views with history

Greeenehaven Arizona has changed a lot in the last few years. This small town has a rich history in our area and was named after Art Greene. I found a great site at ASU Libraries with photos and all about Art Greene - You can check it out

Colorado River and Art Greene photos and history

Greenehaven is the only town with home ownership almost on the shores of Lake Powell. Several years ago a developer purchased a large portion of Greenehaven and today has several spec homes for sale as well as numerous lots. There are also private owners selling lots and homes as well.

As of May 3, 2008 in Greenehaven there are

146 lots for sale

Price range $75,000 to $235,000

Size range .23 acres to 1.05 acres

Lake Powell is currently raising 4 inches a day and by the first of July should see a 50 foot total vertical increase in water. Try to imagine what is in these photos taken today with 50 additional vertial feet of water.....

and one more... from another available lot..

If you would like further info on the property or homes for sale in Greenehaven

Lake Powell Arizona Utah Real Estate Blog

Big Water, Ut: Bird Day 2008

For the past 30 some odd years Big Water, Utah, has been celebrating Bird Day. For many years Bird Day was a Utah holiday and when it was shelved Big Water community kept it up. Bird Day started as a way to celebrate the seagulls eating the crickets that saved the crops of the Mormon Pioneers. This year Bird Day was held April 26th.

Bird Day is a fun filled, old fashioned, carnival day for the kids of all ages. There were sack races, balloon tosses, 3-legged races, an art contest, a bake off, the ever popular treasure hunt and scavenger hunt, and of course, the EGG toss. Guessing the amount of eggs and candy in the baskets and voting on “Bird Awards” were two of the most popular activities. There were lots of folks entered in the arm wrestling and nail hammering contests as well.

Many thanks to the local folks who have worked for so many years to keep Bird Day something to look forward to each year in Big Water.

So the adults had fun with this one as well as the little kids. Egg Races. Put a raw egg in a spoon, run the length of the parking lot and don't drop the egg. Yeah!

Big kids got three nails and one small hammer, ladies got two nails and one small hammer, little guys got one nail and one LARGE hammer for the Nail Hammering Contest.

Ladies take arm wrestling pretty serious.

By the 6:30 p.m awards ceremony everyone looked like they had a wonderful, sun filled, fun day.

Lake Powell - Colorado River Spring Runoff May 2008

The last numbers have been posted prior to Lake Powell's annual elevation rise. The National Weather Service and the Bureau of Reclamation are predicting Lake Powell will see a 50 vertical foot rise in elevation from now until around July 4th when it peaks. When full Lake Powell has 1960 miles of shore line, so trying to imagine what a 50 foot wall of water around that looks like can be daunting.

With the drought that has been ongoing most of the last 8 years, this is great news!

Lake Powell is the savings account of water, while Lake Mead downstream, is the checking account. Both accounts have been pretty low the last several years. Lake Mead is currently at 50% of storage capacity while Lake Powell is at 45%.

As of April 7, 2008 snowpack conditions above Lake Powell are at 116% of normal. Snowpack levels on average, peak around April 10th so 116% seems like a good call for the overall forecast.

Unregulated infow into Lake Powell is projected to be 122% of average - which with currernt elevations equals about a 50 foot rise. It can be difficult to call "exactly" how much water will eventaully make it to Lake Powell out of the Colorado River system but this year conditions seem right for a good runoff. Spring has not been overly hot and dry and the ground underneath the snowpack is well saturated meaning more water will have a chance to make it downstream.

Lake Powell is expected to peak around the first of July at 3639, or about 41 feet from full. This is the highest the lake has been since 2002.

While the drought has been harsh the water storage system has worked for the west. Water deliveries have still been made down stream. Even tho Lake Powell has seen a elevation drop, folks in the lower basin states of CA, AZ and NV as well as Mexico still saw their legal allotment of Colorado River water delivered. Power generation at the dam has slowed down with the lower water levels, but recreation and the multi-million dollar industry it has become to the Page, Lake Powell area has not.

PHOTO:

In this photo, taken on 4-15-2008, the "bathtub" ring around Lake Powell can clearly be seen. The water line is a calcium carbonate deposit left on the rocks by the hard water of the Colorado River. The line is @ 110 feet tall. 50 feet of that will be covered by July 1st with Water!

For More Information visit Lake Powell Real Estate Blog
