River Vale New Jersey - Searching for the American Dream

The community of River Vale, New Jersey in Bergen County consists of a small unassuming town known for it's Golf Courses and manicured green lawns a plenty. It's not uncommon to get a glimpse of the beautiful wildlife as seen here on River Vale Road in front of the Edgewood Country Club.

Established in the early 1900's, the Township of River Vale is rich in History and has remained one of the most unassuming towns in the Pascack Valley region. It's quiet yet upscale personality boasts three Golf Courses as well as the town center known to many as "The Four Corners" where the two main roads of River Vale Road and Westwood Avenue intersect to provide the town with shops, banks and local food stops. In recent months this section of town has begun to grow with additional areas designated for future shops.

This is the place that I, Lisa, remember growing up. Walking to the town center known as the Four Corners with friends or one of my three sisters, I remember a simpler time when walking to grammar school was what I did. Having grown up on the South side of River Vale, I walked to Roberge School which covers grades K-5. Children on the North end of town attend Woodside. All meet at Holdrum School for grades 6-8 and then move up to Pascack Valley High School to join the children from the town of Hillsdale. Of course this was where I first met my husband, Bob!

This beautiful town of River Vale has undergone some changes in the form of updates to the town center as well as the River Vale Public Library.

The town also celebrated it's 100 year River Vale Centennial in a year long celebration a few years ago.

When I was a young girl, one of the first teen idols I remember was Bobby Darin. Recently we watched the movie "Beyond The Sea" telling his life story . At the end of the movie, in an effort to console Bobby, the actress that played his wife Sandra Dee tells Bobby (played by Kevin Spacey) "people only hear what they see". On that note Bobby gives the performance of his life to a Las Vegas audience.

I thought how profound those words were and how they apply so well to Buyers and Sellers in the real estate market. When we are out with Buyers showing Homes, it doesn't matter what the words in a listing say or how nice the pictures on the Multiple Listing Service look. Buyers will only hear what they see when they enter the home. To that end, we say "Sellers Take Note"! Consider those words when preparing your home for sale. Note the following tips to make your home more appealing to Buyers so they See what they Hear:

First Show them the Door - by this we mean make sure your first impression makes your Buyers want to come in. If the door needs paint, windex or repair, do it now. There is only one chance to make a First Impression!
Before coming in, check out the Landscaping. Plant, mow or trim to spruce it up.
Outdoor Stoops, Decks, Porches and Railings should be clean and safe.
Once they enter your home, Keep It Simple and uncluttered. Eliminate personal photos so the Buyers can picture themselves in your home.
Paint is the most inexpensive fix-up of all. Take care to keep the colors neutral.
Clean like the white glove is coming. Most Buyers are attracted by a clean home because it tells the Buyer that the home has been maintained.

For this Husband and Wife Realtor® Team, it's all about being together and doing what we love that led to our Success - selling Real Estate!

First and foremost, you must know yourselves. Will you be driving each other crazy if you are together too much? Bob and I are from such similar backgrounds that our connection is strong.

1. So the first discussion should be about where you both want your Office to be. Some people prefer working from their Home while others want a definite separation between Home & Office.

2. Next you should decide who does what. Most people will know what they like doing best.

What works for us is that we each have our own tasks that we prefer taking the lead on. Bob is the Technical Support Expert in the Team. He keeps us up and running, making sure all the Computers are updated and working! Additionally Bob takes care of the Customer Contacts from our Websites. Lisa on the other hand enjoys keeping the Paperwork in order. Customer Files, Contracts and writing the checks to pay the bills. Lisa also likes doing the Negotiating but Bob also jumps in on this as well.

An important decision will be how you will work with Customers. When you make an appointment to Show a home, will you go together? Will you meet Sellers together for Listing Appointments?
Who will take care of the Budget? It probably works best if both of you Discuss these decisions as they are a major part of your Business.
Automobiles is one more important aspect of your Business since as Realtors®, we spend alot of time in our cars.
Marketing and Prospecting may be something that needs to be worked out as well. There are Mailings, Advertising Budgets and Methods of Developing New Business that are important.
There should be someone that stays in touch with Continuing Education, Updates to Industry Rules, Regulations & Laws.

But one of the most important aspects of being a successful Husband and Wife Team is as in any Family Run Business, you must find time for yourselves. It's so easy to get comfortable working from home. We are in a profession that is much like that of a Doctor - we're always on Call! Memories of Hillsdale New Jersey - My Home Town

The following article was previously published in "Historic Happenings", the newsletter of the Pascack Valley History Project. Titled "Fond Memories Of Hillsdale - Get them Before They Fade!, the article is self-explanatory.

We have known Ned Barber for a number of years now, the founder of The Pascack Valley History Project, and he asked me if I had any Pascack Valley memories or old photos that I would be willing to share.

Here is just one of the many fond memories I have.

Memories of Hillsdale New Jersey - My Home Town

Born and raised in Hillsdale, I had the opportunity to attend all three of the Hillsdale Grammar Schools. Growing up on the East side of town on David Place, near Beechwood Park in the early 60's while the Meadowbrook School was being built, I attended Ann Blanche Smith School for the first part of my 3rd Grade (1963-1964). At that time, the town shuttled children by bus from Beechwood Park to Ann Blanche Smith School. The photo on top, showing the old borough hall and firehouse, is the view I saw out the window of my school bus each day on the way to school. It was given to me many years later by my father, the late John S. Hammerstein.

After the completion of Meadowbrook School, I remember that the children were given the opportunity to cast their vote for the school's new name. Our choices included Kennedy, in memory of the former president, and Stephen Foster, the1800's composer who wrote Camptown Races, Oh! Susanna and Swanee River. The winner, however, was Meadowbrook. The name Meadowbrook stems from the fact that the School was built on a "meadow" with a "brook" that ran behind it! My brother, John, remembers that the town had an outside consulting firm determine that the new school would meet the needs for the Hillsdale town children for another 20 years. Today 40 years later the school is, of course, much larger than originally built.

During the construction of Meadowbrook School, the town provided the children with a gravel-covered footpath that ran from Liberty Avenue to Piermont Avenue between the homes on Everdell Avenue and Stonybrook Country Club. The land is now the home to the Stonybrook Townhome Complex and part of the Stonybrook Swim Club. Back in those days, however, the land was partially owned by the town and partially owned by the Country Club, as my mother recalls. I believe that the Country Club Club House was once used as a training facility for a professional boxer. Perhaps a reader will remember the name and more details.

Walking down the footpath on route to and from school at lunch break, while listening to "WABC" on my A.M. Transistor Radio as the Beatles arrived at Idlewild Airport (now known as JFK Airport), is my all-time favorite memory. Sadly, I can also remember being released from school early on the day that John. F. Kennedy was assassinated. It was a simpler time in Hillsdale but one filled with many memories that this former resident will always treasure!

I Wish My Website Did This..... Website Box Active Rain Blogging Contest....

Our Three (or more) wishes that our website could/should do would be:

1. Have an update button when a customer logs in to notify us of activity on our site. In other words, notify us of what that person has been looking at and or what they are looking for.

2. Have an integrated IDX search on our home page like we have on our KW site that seems to work seamlessly within our branded pages that link back to us and notify us on our Market Leader web E-Edge site.

3. Have a dedicated 24 hour customer service line would be nice. The weekend comes and usually that's when problems arise and there is no one to answer the phones to fix said problems that arise. Can be very frustrating in that you could have outdated information on your site and cannot get to it if you cannot access control panels from the backside of the site.

4. I know, I'm onto 4 but who can stop at just 3?.... Have complete access to the back-end of our homepage in order to update our latest listings as we take them and get them out to the internet in a more expeditious manner.

5. Ok, Just one more.... Have an integrated feed from my Active Rain Blogs via RSS or another way to post our blog pages on our personal websites.

6. I lied.... Another one: Make the site Mobile compatible so that mobile users can search on the go..... A must in our new mobile enabled society of buyers out there.

I think that's enough for now... What do you think?

We are currently reviewing our website right now and deciding on what our next move will be.

We may go with a Word Press site or stay with our present company or maybe even go with WebsiteBox.

Would love to be a Beta tester for you as we are currently in the market for an improvement on what we have now.
