5 Python Pluses for the Enterprise

You might not find quite as many experienced Python developers as .Net or Java folks, in part because Python is younger than Java and hasn't had the corporate push of .Net. Still, Python's doing well enough in developer adoption to make it a solid choice. Another advantage in Python's court? It's vendor neutral.

By now, you should at least be passingly familiar with Python. One of the fastest-growing languages, Python has been gaining popularity for years and has reached a level of maturity that makes it a top choice for enterprise development.

ActivePython Business Edition now ships with Numpy, SciPy and matplotlib - three fundamental python packages for financial and scientific computing. With the recent US SEC proposals to use python for ABS financial models - there are more than a few python-curious accountants, analysts and regulators starting to research and play with python.

Setting up IIS for ActivePerl

In the good old days, you could turn on IIS 5, install ActivePerl, and get a working integrated setup for your Windows systems right out of the box. However, policy changes released with IIS 7, IIS 7.5, and recent service packs for IIS 5 and 6 have prevented the existing ActivePerl installers from automatically setting up all the configuration needed to use ActivePerl inside your IIS server. A number of additional manual steps have been required before Perl-driven web pages would work.

Open Source and Adult Content with Perl and PHP - Oh My!

For example, keep your database clean, embrace open source for as many commodity components as possible, and only use the latest technology if it adds actual value to your site, not just for the sake of using it.

We published a review by Romuald Restout of this book last January. It's worth reading, but I hadn't paid much attention to it, as it didn't seem to me that he was working in the trenches of consuming and creating open-source software.

Concurrency in Tcl: Talking Heads

This is the third and last article in the "Concurrency in Tcl" series. The previous postings introduced event handling and threading as possible solutions to the problem of executing several things at the same time, using examples which required basically no communication between the various parts at all.

Test post with code snippet

In the previous article we talked about pseudo-concurrency through events and mentioned threads as one possible solution to some of their limitations. This second article expands on that.

Threads compared to Events

First, in contrast to events, only the C level foundations are built into the core. Script access to threads requires a package: Thread.

Last week, we announced the results of an informal survey of over 140 developers, architects and managers and got some good insights into how and when enterprise developers are planning to deploy cloud applications.

The survey found:

Concurreny in Tcl: Weaving Threads

Introduction

In the previous article we talked about pseudo-concurrency through events and mentioned threads as one possible solution to some of their limitations. This second article expands on that.

Threads compared to Events

First, in contrast to events, only the C level foundations are built into the core. Script access to threads requires a package: Thread.

Concurrency in Tcl: Events without getting Twisted

So you wish to perform several things in parallel, or at least concurrently enough that the user can believe they are happening in parallel? Tcl supports this in multiple ways, actually too many for a single post to cover, so this post is the start of a small series about concurrency in Tcl. Here we'll talk about events and their management, followed by a post about threads, and finally a post about how we can make the parts of a parallel application talk to each other.

New Poll Results: Open Source License Compliance A Major Concern for Enterprises

Last week, we conducted an informal poll amongst 70 IT professionals including a mix of engineers, information architects, lawyers and CIOs. The survey was conducted in a webinar entitled “Safeguarding against the risks of improper open source licensing – valuable lessons for software/hardware vendors” by Greg Olson, a senior partner at Olliance Group and Bart Copeland, President and CEO of ActiveState.

My favorite Tcl package

Well, originally I wanted to write down a list of my favorite of Tcl packages and then post about that. But after I wrote them down, I found that this list had only one entry: William Duquette’s snit.

A Web-Framework Weekend: LinuxFest Northwest 2010 Preview

One of my favorite local conferences is coming up this weekend, namely LinuxFest NorthWest in Bellingham, Washington. The range of sessions has always been somewhat unpredictable, but this year features a healthy number of talks dedicated to developing web applications with the main open source frameworks. I figure it will be a good chance for me to get up to speed on any new developments I missed out on, as well as meeting people who are working in the area locally.
