In order to view the saved transcripts, you can go select File/Open Chat History to see the history. I don't want to clutter this blog, so if you reach out to me on LinkedIn, I'd like to hear more about the results you saw where BLU was outperforming HANA by 10x. You know enough about this space to know that benchmarks are 'benchmarks' and folks should just try the two for themselves. I always encourage clients to cost, compare, and benchmark technologies for themselves and choose the best solution they feel matches their economic cost curve and risk profiles. The sizings above was done by an SAP HANA expert for HANA and a DB2 expert for BLU.

Hey Adam,

I saw this at the time - and someone shared with me the tests that IBM did. Sorry, but they are completely erroneous.

- If DB2 BLU performance is showing to be 10x HANA performance, then IBM are doing something wrong. Sorry but BLU does not join, group or aggregate as fast as HANA. I presume IBM found a special case and exploited it, but that's certainly not representative of real-world customer PoCs, which show HANA to be 3-5x faster than BLU with the same hardware.

- HANA deliberately only supports Westmere-EX and not Sandy Bridge-EP or Ivy Bridge-EP because only the Intel EX/E7 platform provides excellent memory protection. When you have an in-memory database, you need excellent memory protection. The Intel E7 V2 is coming soon, which HANA will support.

- Buying new hardware goes both ways - many times, customers are ready to replace hardware and HANA hardware is much cheaper than the equivalent Power platform. Trust me, I've built a bunch of business cases to help customers off Power.

So Paul and IBM twist the facts to suit the marketing spiel they want to show customers.

John
