It is certainly nothing new for Cydia tweaks to make use of gestures to change the values of screen brightness or the device’s volume level. Having said that, most such tweaks are not really a sight to behold, since they rarely use the default iOS HUDs or sliders, leading to a rather unflattering end product. Even if the looks are kept original, the gestures end up getting too complex to perform in daily routine. DoubleTap is a new Cydia tweak by Alan Yip that does a good job of bringing gestures to the party whenever you are in need of a quick way to change your iPhone’s screen brightness or volume level. With DoubleTap, you won’t have to decide upon an Activator gesture, since the tweak comes with a few predefined gestures and their corresponding actions. It even lets you toggle the orientation lock without entering the App Switcher tray.

As the name of the tweak suggests, DoubleTap focuses on accomplishing most of its tasks via a single gesture. There are different variations of the double tap gesture you have to use, but the developer has made sure that it isn’t too hard remembering all the combinations.

If you decide to go with the default DoubleTap settings, the state of the orientation lock can be changed by double-tapping the screen with three fingers. The gesture works on the SpringBoard, while you are in the lock screen or even inside apps. The orientation-related feature of DoubleTap might not be as elaborate as the actions offered by UIRotation, but it gets the job done.

You can choose to control the volume level or screen brightness of your device using DoubleTap, but not both of these at the same time. To perform your chosen action, just tap the screen twice, and then swipe vertically using three fingers. An upward swipe increases the volume/brightness level, while going in the other direction has the opposite effect.

All of the options offered by DoubleTap can be accessed by heading to the stock Settings app. You can choose to toggle off any of the actions, which makes the tweak completely customizable and ensures that users get to keep complete control over things.

DoubleTap is different from other gesture-based tweaks of this kind because it doesn’t just invoke a slider or toggle to control settings, it lets you actually make changes to your device via these gestures. It is available for free, and can be had from the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.

Back in the days when Windows Phone was still the new kid on the block, Microsoft released an interactive web-based demo of the platform to entice users of other smartphones. The announcement of Blackberry Z10 was also accompanied by Glimpse, which allowed users to explore some of the finer aspects of BB10. It is a testament to the popularity of iOS that Apple hasn’t released a demo for the latest iOS 7 update, but some fans have gone to great pains to create one themselves. The Recombu demo of iOS 7 beta is interactive, and offers a pretty decent representation of the update. You can use some of the apps, take a good look at the new UI elements and even get a firsthand experience with features like Control Center.

To access the Recombu demo, head to the website given at the end of this post from your desktop browser. Although you can use the demo with any browser, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are recommended for best results. The demo is touch-compatible, and worked fine on our iPhone 4S, but performing some of the gestures is simply more convenient on a higher resolution display.

Recombu allows its users to choose a skin for the device on which the demo is run. To the right of this device, a set of ever-changing instructions is available. The instructions get updated whenever you access a new feature of iOS 7 or move to a different view.

The lock screen in the demo is completely functional, with support for dragging down the Notification Center, and the option to invoke the Control Center. A few of the toggles (Bluetooth, Airplane mode and WiFi) in CC are clickable, while the rest are just placeholders. The camera grabber works fine as well, and if you are using one of the recommended desktop browsers, you can even snap photos right from within the demo.

The apps available on the Home screen in the Recombu demo are functional to varying degrees. While almost all the features in the Camera app work, the Messages app only shows a single conversation thread. The Music app is missing iTunes Radio, and you can’t swipe across multiple cities in the Weather app. All the apps that are available on the Home screen do at least open to demonstrate their basic capabilities. Overall, the demo serves its purpose of giving the curious ones among us a taste of what’s coming to their iPhone this fall. So, no matter which platform you are on, give this demo a shot and see for yourself what all the kerfuffle regarding iOS 7 is about.

The Facebook app for iPhone is adequate enough to keep users away from the service’s desktop version for weeks. If, like me, you rely almost exclusively on Facebook’s app to stay in touch with your friends, then you might be a little confused seeing all the smiley faces and ‘feelings’ in the status updates all over your News Feed. The new status icons were introduced by Facebook in its desktop version a few weeks back, and the iPhone app has been updated with support for them just today. Now you can really let the world know how you are feeling, or what’s your bedside read these days. Apart from this major change, the update has also brought more easily accessible privacy controls and the ability to conveniently forward images received in messages. There’s still no hashtag search and visibility, though.

One thing that appears to have been rolled out quietly with the update is that whenever the app is launched, a banner representing the last pending notification shows up. Other changes might not be as easily visible though, as the overall layout of the app and the News Feed hasn’t changed at all.

To see and use the new status icons, head to the composition menu by tapping the Status button from the top bar. The icons can be accessed by hitting the smiley face in the options bar below the text area. To help users create new posts easily, the ‘What Are You Doing?’ list is arranged pretty neatly, with separate sections for ‘Feeling’, ‘Watching’, ‘Reading’, etc. You can perform a search for the desired entity within these sub-lists, while the most popular choices are shown on the main page.

A more practical change in Facebook 6.2 for iOS is the availability of advanced privacy controls for every post. Tap the small arrow icon located in the top-right corner of a post to change its privacy settings. You can choose to make the post visible to a specific group, or to one of your friend lists.

Chat Heads have really changed the way Facebook messaging works on smartphones, and the latest update of the app brings a much smaller improvement to the messaging front too. Users can now create a new chat thread simply by choosing to forward an image received in a previous conversation. This can be done using the small sharing button visible in the bottom-left corner of each photo.

For anyone who has been feeling a little left out amid the storm of status icons, Facebook 6.2 is a good update. So, give it a go by heading to the following link and grabbing the free, universal Facebook app.

With social networking sites introducing new features on an almost weekly basis, our online lives are finally going towards being streamlined. You can simultaneously post on Twitter and Facebook, while popular photo sharing apps like Instagram come with some impressive social media integration as well. When everything is converging, it seems reasonable to have services that are capable of combining your social networks without making you leave any of them. In the past, we have covered a few such services like Yoono for web and Cloze for iOS, but such services very rarely offer a news feed that truly combines updates from all of your accounts. Even if they do, the whole thing is often a complete mess and you end up missing several important posts. Fuse: Social takes care to keep things simple while offering a feed combining posts from Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Rather than just showing updates, what sets Fuse apart is that it even lets you use almost every major feature of these social networks.

Connecting Facebook and Twitter accounts with Fuse is free, and you can associate as many of these accounts with the app as you want. For LinkedIn and Instagram though, a one-off in-app purchase of $0.99 is required for each network.

Once you have logged in, Fuse imports all the recent posts from the connected accounts to the feeds section of the app. For Facebook posts, there are options to like and comment. You can even share a post if you really like it, or view it in Safari. Fuse is capable of displaying images in the main feed, which is specially useful for Twitter and Instagram posts. If you want to open a link from a post, you can do so within the app as well.

The second tab in Fuse displays mentions and requests from different accounts. You can respond to these notifications from the app quite easily. For now, sending Twitter and Facebook messages doesn’t work properly in the app, though they are in works, and there is a dedicated messaging menu. You can, however, view all of your messages without any problem.

To create a new post and share it simultaneously on multiple accounts, hit the top-right icon. It is possible to attach images and your location info with each post, and there are buttons for all associated accounts at the bottom of the screen to facilitate quick sharing.

Fuse: Social has a pretty thorough search menu, which is capable of narrowing down results based on your requirements. The app also maintains the history of your queries.

Fuse is a free app, and comes optimized for the iPhone and iPod touch. Give it a go for a genuinely combined social experience.

You might not see it all the time, but every photo snapped using an iOS device has some EXIF data associated with it. If you have a jailbroken device, there are some ways of viewing these EXIF properties within the stock Photos app, but we have seen in the past that apps like Handy Album can put this information to even better use. Eventiles is somewhat similar to Handy Album, but has expanded the concept even further. With this iPhone app, you don’t need to perform any manual work, as it generates neat albums out of all the photos present in your device’s camera roll. The albums created by Eventiles use location and time data associated with pictures to group them together, and the app is even smart enough to assign suitable titles to these collections. As an added bonus, you get to apply beautiful filers to entire albums with a single tap, which can be really useful if you want to share the collection over your social network later.

You have to sign up for an account before you can use Eventiles. Creating a new account just needs your email address and a password. To finalize things though, it is also necessary to click the link sent by the app in the confirmation email.

Eventiles asks for the user’s permission to access their location and photos, but it doesn’t ask for anything else. When the app is launched for the first time, your entire camera roll is arranged into a variety of albums. If you took the photos on a special day, say New Year’s Eve, Eventiles is sure to include a mention of this day in the album’s title. The location where a set of photos is snapped usually shows up in the title as well. If you are not satisfied with the app’s automatic effort, or just want to add more details, tap the small pencil icon below the collection. Not only can albums be renamed in this way, but you can also add a few lines of additional description to them.

Eventiles offers some good album management options. You can merge two albums together, delete a collection altogether, or duplicate it for use elsewhere. To give the photos inside an album a different look, you can shuffle them around, or make use of the available image effects. The filters are applied to all photos that are part of a collection, and there is no way of choosing one for a single photo.

If you want to share an album created by Eventiles via email, choose the ‘Share Privately’ option, or use the Facebook and Twitter sharing buttons to share it over social media. If some of your friends are using the app, there is no need to share albums, as they can view your collection automatically after connecting with you.

Eventiles is a free app, and doesn’t come with any ads. It is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, and has a decent UI. The app’s intelligence isn’t disappointing at all, and might manage to surprise you at times. Give it a go by heading to the following link.

Voicemail lets you deflect calls when you’re busy in order to be able to access the recorded messages later. If you’ve ever thought of having that very same feature in Skype - the leading app for making voice and video calls over the internet, we have some great news for you. Skype has just added the feature and you can now send video messages to your Skype contacts even when they’re offline. On free accounts, a video message can be 3 minutes long, but with a premium account, users can send video messages of any length. The video messages can be sent from both desktop and mobile apps of the service, and can be recorded by front facing or regular back cameras on mobile devices.

To send a video message, just right-click a contact from the contacts list in the column on the left and select ‘Send Video Message…’. If you do not have a webcam connected to your system, this option will appear to be inactive.

Start recording by clicking the record button in the middle. A timer counts down from 3 minutes so you can see how much recording time you have left. Click the same button to end your message.

You can preview the message and when you’re done, click the send button (the little envelope next to the record button) to send your message. Your message will start uploading to Skype’s server, with the time taken depending on how long your message is, and the speed of your internet connection. If your contact is on an older version of Skype, they will be given a link and a PIN code to enter in order to view your message. Those using the latest version will be able to view it within Skype.

To send a video message from your mobile device, open a contact card in Skype and tap the new ‘Video message’ button. By default, the app records with the front facing camera but if you tap the camera button next to the record one, you can switch it to the one the back. Tap the record button to start recording your message.

An on-screen timer counts down the time for you just like on the desktop app. Tapping the record button again will end the recording. You can preview the video you’ve just recorded, and add a title and description to it if you want by tapping the pencil button.

When your message is ready, tap the send button and watch as the video is uploaded and sent to your contact.

It’s great to see this feature come to Skype, especially since it’s a video calling service and the popular free texting service WhatsApp has had this feature for a while now. We hope the same functionality also comes to Viber’s desktop apps for Mac and Windows when the service finally brings video calling to its mobile apps.

This update with video messages support is available for all major platforms except for Windows Phone, which is both strange and ironic since Skype is owned by Microsoft.

Science might be able to phase out sleep to some extent in the future, but for now we need to take a nap whenever reinvigoration of the body and mind is needed. If your daily sleep is cut short by even a few hours, the entire day is largely affected. There are plenty of smartphone apps that claim to help users fall asleep, but Sleep Genius appears to be taking a completely reasonable approach to the problem. It doesn’t make claims that are as lofty as the ones made by Dream:ON, but isn’t as mundane as the previously covered Bedtime Help either. With Sleep Genius running on your iPhone, you can get a good night’s sleep thanks to the sound effects and ambient music it provides. Anyone who is in the habit of taking power naps is sure to love the app, since it has a whole menu dedicated to these short sleep spells. Even when it comes to waking up, Sleep Genius is different from its competitors, as it wakes you up gradually over the course of five minutes.

Although Sleep Genius itself is only a little over 20 MB in size, it downloads some additional sound files when you first launch it, which can lead to a considerable wait before you get to use the app. Users are also prompted to sign up for the Sleep Genius newsletter, but it is not mandatory by any means and can be skipped quite easily.

Seep Genius has three audio programs to put users to sleep. One of them, ‘Renewed Universe’, is free while the other two can be unlocked for $2.99 each. There are two ways of using Sleep Genius. You can make it play music continuously until you wake up, or set it to automatically stop after a certain amount of time. With continuous playback, you are more likely to get good results, but your device’s battery life will surely take a hit. Thankfully though, the app is capable of keeping the music playing even when your device’s screen is off.

The ‘Alarm’ feature offered by the app is quite interesting, and might even be called the best part of Sleep Genius. Rather than rudely playing a loud sound to wake you up, Sleep Genius takes a very gradual approach. The app starts playing some very low natural sounds five minutes before the alarm is supposed to go off, and when the actual alarm time arrives, the ‘Revive Cycle’ reaches its peak and wakes you up.

The third menu in Sleep Genius belongs to ‘Power Naps’. The app claims that according to results of scientific research, a power nap of less than 30 minutes is perfect for maximum rejuvenation. In this mode, everything from the background music to alarm sounds is handled by Sleep Genius automatically, and you can go to sleep with an easy mind.

Sleep Genius has an entire section dedicated to sleep-related tips and tricks, which explain the concept and working of the app. Registered users also get new tips in their email. So, if you have trouble falling sleep, or just want to see how it works, give Sleep Genius a go. It is free and display-optimized for iPhone/iPod touch.

A lot has been said and written about Apple’s new flat UI for iOS 7, and the emphasis on minimalism in almost all areas of the platform. Many have taken issue with the way app icons look in the update’s beta version, but some have also been appreciative of a few UI elements in iOS 7. The status bar received its chameleon-like characteristics in iOS 6, and has been revamped yet again in iOS 7. The signal bars are now rounded instead of vertical, and the battery indicator is new as well. Vox is not a port of the iOS 7 battery indicator by any means; rather it shows an alternative way the icon could have been redesigned to go with the update’s other minimal features. Rather than replicating an old-style alkaline cell, the Vox indicator is circular and changes its properties to match the current level of your device’s battery. The tweak is pretty unique for iOS, although it is somewhat reminiscent of the circular battery mod that came out for Android quite a while back.

After you have downloaded Vox, no further configuration is needed as it springs into action without any external prompting. The tweak has no menu in the Settings app or icon on the SpringBoard. You will know that it is working properly as soon as the stock battery indicator is replaced with a circular one that changes its color and size depending upon the remaining battery percentage.

Whenever the device is on charging, the status bar icon remains white, with a flash sign superimposed on it. As soon as the battery reaches 100%, the icon turns green. When not on charging, the battery icon diminishes in radius with the passage of time, with the diminished part shown faded, until it becomes nothing more than a red dot inside a circle. If you want to view the exact battery percentage, pull down the Notification Center, as the indicator that shows up there has a numeric value written inside it.

For best results, it is better to use Vox after turning off the numerical battery percentage on your iPhone. This can be done by heading to the Settings app and looking for the Usage menu under the ‘General’ section. There is no compulsion for turning the numeric display off, but it will just be rather redundant with Vox.

Vox is a really simple tweak, and doesn’t cost a penny. Those of you who are just tired of the same old battery indicator and want a change in the status bar are gonna love it. It must be noted that the tweak does not alter the lock screen charging icon in any way, and deals solely with the indicator in the top-right corner of the screen. Give Vox a go by heading to the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.

Although Shazam has gained a host of social features with the passage of time, it is still a far cry from some of the services that are designed exclusively for sharing your taste in music with friends. #nwplyng combines scrobbling and song identification in a really organized manner, but there is more to this app than just that. There are a number of ways you get to share your choices with your friends. You can search for a song on YouTube and post it to your feeds, identify it using your device’s speaker, or simply enjoy the tracks shared by people you follow. #nwplyng is available for both Android and iOS, and works identically on both platforms. Other than a neat commenting system, #nwplyng also offers a collection of badges that can be unlocked by accomplishing different targets related to the app’s usage.

#nwplyng can only be used after signing in with your Facebook, Twitter or Foursquare account. Before logging in though, you can also take a tour of the app to get familiar with its usage and features. If any of your friends are already using the app, you can start following them on #nwplyng by heading to the ‘Find Friends’ section. Even if everyone on #nwplyng is a complete stranger to you, it is possible to follow them by using the ‘Search for usernames’ option.

The #nwplyng feed is populated by shared items from everyone you follow, your friends and tracks that are currently popular on the service. To like a post, simply touch the heart icon or double-tap the album art. Users can also leave their comments on each post in their feed by hitting the speech bubble icon.

So, how exactly can you share a post of your own on #nwplyng? There’s not much to it, as you just have to tap the blue button located in the top-right corner. If you want to manually choose the song, hit the search icon and let the app find the track for you on YouTube. You can also use the device’s microphone to identify a song if it is playing in your vicinity. You can associate a location and image with your posts as well.

With the passage of time, as you start sharing posts more frequently, #nwplyng keeps leveling you up. These levels are accompanied by new titles and badges, and are based on particular songs or just general persistence in using the app.

#nwplyng is a free app, and has been around for a few months on iOS, though it has only recently made its way to the Google Play store. You can download it for your OS from the following links.

The Notification Center of jailbroken iOS devices is often filled with interesting widgets and toggles that make our lives much easier. No matter how bloated your NC has become though, it is likely that whenever you invoke it, there will be a reasonable amount of empty space at the bottom of everything. With an iPad, on the other hand, things are completely different. The Notification Center is always just large enough to let everything fit inside it. As soon as you get rid of pending notifications, the NC shrinks back to its minimum size. If you like this feature, and want the NC to behave this way on your iPhone as well, NCEnough is the perfect tweak for you. Other features of the tweak include letting users change the color of the NC (a bit like Custom NC Background), and keeping the SpringBoard accessible even when the Notification Center is active.

NCEnough trims down the Notification Center as soon as you install it – no configuration required. That said, there are still plenty of options available that can make the NC even more awesome. To tinker with the tweak, head to the menu it adds to the stock Settings app. There are two ways of using NCEnough; you can choose to keep the area behind the NC functional at all times, even when the Notification Center is dragged down, or you can have the tweak dim down everything that is in the background. If the screen remains active, this means that your full screen apps won’t get temporarily frozen every time you check your notifications – something that can come in handy while playing games. A rather curious option in the first section of the NCEnough settings is labeled ‘Keep status bar at bottom’. If you toggle this option on, the status bar is pushed down every time the NC is invoked. This features is the exact opposite of the previously covered Status Bar Switcher, but not too less useful than that.

NCEnough offers a lot of options that can be used to alter the visual aspects of the Notification Center. Transparency level (or alpha value, in technical terms) and the background color can both the chosen by the users. There is even an option to randomize the background color each time NC is invoked.

The last, and probably rather useless, option in the NCEnough menu is ‘Make NC thinner’. While the tweak takes care of the NC’s height automatically, you can reduce its width using the options provided in this menu. We called it useless because on an iPhone’s rather small screen, the end results of thinning down the NC aren’t very becoming.

NCEnough costs $0.99, which is fair enough for a tweak that offers so much. Give it a go by heading to the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store.

You might not agree with Jony Ive’s design choices for iOS 7, but there can be no denying the fact that in terms of features, the upcoming version of iOS is going to be the best yet. Things like AirDrop, Control Center and improved multitasking have the potential to improve an average user’s experience on an iPhone. Having said that, most Apple fans have to wait a few more months before they can get their hands on iOS 7 and until then, the jailbreak community is busy bringing different features of the update to older versions of iOS. We have already covered a theme that replicates the iOS 7 lock screen, and another one that modifies just about everything else to give you a taste of the update right now. When Control Center was first introduced, every Cydia user must have thought of SBSettings or NCSettings, and maybe that is why no developer has bothered with a full port of the feature to iOS 6. However, almost all the components of Control Center are available in the jailbreak store; you just have to know where to look.

It might be possible to achieve the Control Center effect using the SBSettings toggles for NC, but there is a more convenient method available for the jailbreak community.

NCSettings is a tweak that’s already aimed just at the Notification Center, and even supports themes. It doesn’t cost a thing, and is easy to configure. Grab it for your iPhone.

To take away the linen background from the Notification Center, install the free BlurriedNCBackground tweak.

Head to the Cydia store and search for a new theme named ‘iOS 7 Control Toggle Icons’. This theme is aimed at NCSettings and won’t affect any other area of your device. Enable this theme from Winterboard and respring your device. Now you have to head to the NCSettings menu in the Settings app and choose the iOS 7 Control Toggles option under the theme menu.

To get Control Center-like music controls in the Notification Center, NCMusicGestures is a good choice, although there are some major differences between the looks of the two.

In order to complete the Control Center effect, disable the Weather widget by going to the Notification section of the Settings app.

Despite all that effort, you still won’t be able to invoke the NC from the bottom of the screen, and there are no square icons at the end of the NC. Still, the look is pretty cool, and all the involved tweaks and widgets are available for free. So go ahead, try out the look, and see if you find it useful or pretty.

It might seem difficult to even imagine that now, but not too long ago, iOS didn’t have a Notification Center. We have come quite a long way since then, but some basic problems still stand unresolved. While you can easily view missed notifications by heading to the Notification Center, some alerts are really time-sensitive and require the user’s attention immediately. This is why LED notification alerts have been in such hot demand for a long time. Vibration patterns can also be greatly helpful in making sure you never miss an important incoming notification even for a few minutes. The Cydia store now has a third and brilliantly simple solution on offer in PocketNotify - new tweak that can be used to check if there are pending notifications even without looking at your phone. You can check for new notifications even if your iPhone is in your pocket or purse, without the need to whip it out every few minutes to do so. So, how does it work? Let’s find out.

PocketNotify is a really simple tweak, and it is nice to see that the developer hasn’t chosen to make any needless additions to the stock Settings app. Having said that, the tweak does require some very basic configuration. PocketNotify is an Activator-based tweak, so you need to have the gesture platform installed on your device before using it.

So, what exactly is the function performed by this tweak? PocketNotify makes sure that users can perform a gesture of their choice when the device is in lock screen, and whenever this gesture is performed, the tweak checks to see if there are any pending notifications. If there are, the device vibrates, otherwise you won’t feel a thing. Of course, a lot of the tweak’s success depends upon your choice of gesture. For best results, it is better if you go for one of the hardware-related gestures. For example, long-pressing the sleep button or simultaneously pressing both of the volume keys might prove to be good choices, since these gestures can be performed without having to look at the iPhone.

The only improvement in the tweak that we can suggest is that instead of giving just one vibration, the number of vibrations should match the number of pending notifications. Even in its current state though, the tweak is something a lot of people are sure to find themselves using with increasing frequency. You can give it a go for $0.99 by heading to the BigBoss repo.
