Peace Corps Volunteers Rescued Man From Committing Suicide

A middle-aged man identified as Babatunde Arogundade yesterday attempted to commit suicide in a bush behind the Christ Africa Middle School in Osogbo, capital of Osun State yesterday but a food vendor sighted him and informed the teaches in the school who prevented the man from killing himself.

It was gathered that Arogundade hung himself to a branch of the tree behind the school and he was already dangling when a food vendor saw him and screamed.

The Peace Corps volunteers and the teachers rushed to the scene, held the man and cut the rope. They brought him down and removed the noose from his neck.

Arogundade was almost lifeless and seeming to be dead as he was lying on the floor. They poured water on him and he coughed but he was unconscious for some time.

When he regained consciousness, the man mentioned his name but he was not okay to enable him state the reasons for his decision to take his own life.

The matter was reported to the Ataoja Police Divisional Headquarter and some policemen came to the location and took Arogundade to hospital for medical treatment.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fimihan Adeoye while confirming the incident said Arogundade was responding to treatment in the hospital.

The Commissioner of Police urged relations of Arogundade to come to Osun State Police Command to pick him.

Four Men Face Break-In, N10m Firm’s Property Theft Charge

Four men on Tuesday appeared in an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, charged with breaking into a warehouse and carting goods valued at N10 million, property of Fembosco Engineering Ltd.

The accused — Paul Achong, 31; Ugochukwu Anorue, 26; Sunday Eze, 36; and Kingsley Obumneme, 33 — are arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and break-in.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

Police Prosecutor Chinalu Uwadione had told the court that the accused committed the offences between January and April at No. 10, Adewale Crescent, Oshodi.

He said the first accused, Achong, had broken into the warehouse of Fembosco Engineering Company at Oshodi and stolen iIndoor brilliant lights, energy saving lights and other electrical items valued at N10 million.

The three other accused are alleged to have received the stolen items from Achong.

The offences contravened Sections 287, 309, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The Magistrate, Mrs A.S. Okubule, admitted the accused to a bail sum of N500,000 each with two responsible sureties each in like sum, who must show proof of tax payment in the last two years.

The case has been adjourned until June 21 for trial.

Trump: I Have Absolute Right To Share Intelligence With Russia

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had an “absolute right” to share intelligence information with Russia.

“As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining … to terrorism and airline flight safety,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism,” he continued.

The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump revealed highly classified information about the Islamic State extremist group during a meeting last week with Russian envoys in the Oval Office.

White House officials denied the allegations and called the story “false”.

The Russian foreign ministry also denied the reports, calling them “yet another fake news” by the US media.

NAN reports that a Russian foreign ministry spokesperson on Tuesday advised that people don’t read American newspapers, in response to US media reports that Trump had disclosed classified intelligence at a meeting with Russian officials.

The spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said she had received dozens of messages asking about the reports, which have been denied by the White House.

“Guys, have you been reading American newspapers again?” she wrote on her Facebook page. “You shouldn’t read them.”

“You can put them to various uses, but you shouldn’t read them. Lately it’s become not only harmful, but dangerous too.”

Meanwhile, an unnamed European official has told The Associated Press, that his country might stop sharing intel with US if Trump gave classified info to Russian diplomats.

Nigerian Inflation Falls To 17.24 Percent In April

Annual inflation in Nigeria eased for the third straight month in April, inching down to 17.24 percent from 17.26 percent in March, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a report.

A separate food price index, however, showed inflation there rose to 19.30 percent from 18.44 percent in March.

“This is the third consecutive month of a decline in the headline CPI rate, exhibiting effects of some easing in already high food and non-food prices, as well as favourable base effects over 2016 prices,” the report stated.

Annual inflation fell in March and the month prior to that. The fall in February was the first drop in inflation in 15 months, reports Reuters.

Nigeria, which has Africa’s largest economy, is in its second year of recession and is contending with a currency crisis and dollar shortages brought on by low oil prices, which is the OPEC member’s mainstay.

I’d Have Been Sacked At Big Club – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has suggested the results of his first season as Manchester City manager would have seen him sacked by either Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

Guardiola won 14 trophies in four seasons as manager at the Nou Camp, and seven in three years with Bayern.

He never finished lower than second while in charge of Barcelona, while winning the Bundesliga in each of his three seasons in Germany.

But the Spaniard has found life more difficult in England.

Guardiola can finish no higher than third in this season’s Premier League, which will be the lowest final placing of his managerial career. He will also end the campaign without a trophy for the first time as a coach.

He has acknowledged that he needs to do better if he is to avoid being labelled a failure in the Premier League.

“I had pressure when I became manager at Barcelona, when I had no reputation to defend myself with,” Guardiola said Monday.

“At that club, if in six months you don’t win, you are really out. At Barcelona or Bayern Munich, you have to win by far. If not, they don’t give you a second chance.

“Here they gave me a second chance and we will try to do it,” he added. “In my situation at a big club: I’m sacked. I’m out. Sure. Definitely.

“At the clubs I worked at before, I would not be here now, but here we have a second chance and we will try to do it better than this season.”

Guardiola joined City on a three-year contract in July after leaving Bayern Munich, and still has the full backing of club owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak, reports supersport.com.

He admits he has needed time to adjust to English football –- speaking several times this season about the high number of contenders for the Champions League spots, and revealing surprise at how challenges that are fouls in Spain are allowed to go unpunished in the Premier League.

But he is adamant he will get it right at City – because he will not be given forever if he does not.

“If what happens next season is not going well, I’ll have one more year of my contract. If it’s not going well, they are going to change manager,” Guardiola said.

“What is the pressure? Last season, this season, next season, all the managers in the first five or six clubs they have the pressure.

“I put it on myself, to come here, to prove myself, that I am able to do it with a fantastic club.

“One team was better, Chelsea, so congratulations to them, they deserve by far to win the league.

“Tottenham, the second team, played outstanding football again when they beat Manchester United on Sunday. They played amazing.

“The gap is big in terms of points. But when we played against those teams, the gap was not too big and we are going to shorten it next season.”

Guardiola reckons his players have been good enough to have achieved more this season, but have paid the price for not being ruthless enough in attack, and for being too generous in defence.

Vincent Kompany’s return from a series of injury troubles have given City a more solid look, but the manager remains concerned.

“I have to be honest, I notice we are having problems in the boxes and we didn’t solve it so I have to analyse it myself this summer,” said Guardiola.

“I have a feeling with Vincent we are stronger in the box. In football it depends on the quality of the players. The managers don’t play –- we have to be on the sideline.

“It’s about the quality of our players. And I think with the quality of our players is enough to have been better. My only regret is that we were not able to fight to the end in the Premier League.

“One-and-a-half months or two months ago, it was already done. I think we have quality enough to have been there until the end.”

Lagos Polls: You’re Free To Adopt Any Party, Makarfi Tells PDP Members

The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ‎said it will not decide for its loyalists, the political platform they may consider appropriate to contest the forthcoming local government elections in Lagos State.

The faction, however, denied that it has instructed its members to use the platform of a newly registered political party to achieve their political ambition.

There had been reports over the weekend that the Makarfi faction of the PDP had told its members in Lagos to register with the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA)‎.

APDA, which is one of the five newly registered political parties to be unveiled soon by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has Mallam Kabir Shittu, a former member of the ‘PDP Rescue Group’ as it interim National Chairman.

But in a statement Tuesday, spokesperson of the Caretaker Committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, while denying the directive, said it recognised the anxiety of PDP members in the pending elections since the party platform was still in dispute.

According to the statement, while it would like to avoid the situation in Edo and Ondo governorship elections, which PDP lost due to internal crisis: ‎”State chapters are allowed to take any decision they consider appropriate.

“That was why we deliberately decided not to run parallel congresses in Anambra State in order not to subject our party members in that state to the agony of a disputed platform.”

It said the decision was taken in view of the fact that the appeal before the Supreme Court was not likely to be adjudicated before the elections.

Fake UTME Questions Out For N200,000, JAMB Warns

Some syndicate groups are selling past question papers of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for N200,000 to candidates, Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Prof. Is-haq Oloyede alleged yesterday.

Oloyede warned candidates against falling victims to the fraudsters, who claim to have prepared answers to the examination questions being conducted by JAMB.

He spoke during the monitoring of the ongoing UTME examination with Minister of State for Education Prof. Anthony Anwukah in Abuja.The Nation reports.

Oloyede and Anwukah visited Digital Bridge Institute, Global Learning Institute, Sascon International School and the JAMB CBT Centre in Kogo, Bwari.

According to him, some of the fraudulent persons simply take past question papers and redesign them by changing the date and then sell same to gullible candidates, who might not have prepared well for the examination.

He said some candidates fell for the trick, paying huge sums of money to purchase the question papers only to be disappointed on the examination day.

Oloyede said:

“This morning, somebody sent me questions. They call it Orijo and he bought it for N200,000 and when I saw it, it was our questions in 1984 and he just put 2017 on it and started selling it and people are buying it.

“So, if people are corrupt, I won’t have any sympathy if they are duped by corrupt people like themselves. They are just being wise. They went into the past questions of JAMB and just changed the heading.

“Somebody else called me and said he had all my questions. I asked him to send them to me and when I checked, I just laughed because none of that was in our questions. What people are just doing, they are making money because people are gullible.

“We appeal to people to do things according to the rules. No cutting of corners will work with JAMB and that is why many of the candidates who fell for such blackmail are disappointed.”

Terry Undecided About Playing Future

Chelsea icon John Terry scored in what is likely to be his penultimate game for the newly-crowned champions and suggested unless a good offer came along he might retire after Sunday’s final Premier League match.

The 36-year-old – who has spent 22 years at the club winning 15 trophies including this season’s title – opened the scoring in the 4-3 win over Watford at Stamford Bridge his 67th goal in 716 appearances for the Blues.

Terry, who hadn’t started a league game since September 11 last year, slightly blotted his copybook in handing their opponents the equaliser sixty seconds later.

Terry has been linked with a move to Premier League side Bournemouth while Swansea manager Paul Clement who worked with the former England defender at Chelsea has also declared an interest, but he intimated to Sky Sports he had not yet had an offer that might persuade him to keep on playing.

“I still haven’t ruled out Sunday being my last game and retiring,” said Terry, who announced in mid-April he would be leaving the club.

“It depends if the right offer comes along I will sit down and consider it with my family – whether that’s here, abroad, or wherever that may be.

“Genuinely I haven’t made any decisions of yet and I’m evaluating all my options at the moment.”

Terry, who has captained Chelsea on a record 579 occasions, said he had never intended in trying to prevent younger talent from breaking through while he blocked their way.

“I never wanted to be that player that was kind of hanging about, stopping the younger players from coming through,” said Terry, who is unlikely to make the starting line-up for the FA Cup final against Arsenal on May 27th.

However, Terry, capped 78 times by England, admitted Sunday’s home game against relegated Sunderland – where a win would see Chelsea become the first Premier League champions to win 30 games in a 38 match campaign – could be his last, reports supersport.com.

“It’s going to be tough. Tonight was tough but next week I’m going to be in bits,” said Terry.

Terry, whose achievements on the pitch were often marred by his behaviour off it, told the BBC his defensive blunder in letting Etienne Capoue make it 1-1 should serve as a lesson to young children.

“It was a crazy minute. I got on the scoresheet and a minute later made a mistake and let him (Capoue) in. Mixed emotions,” said Terry.

Staff at Charlton School, in Telford, Shropshire, initially denied Philipp Penning's outfit request for his leaving day assembly.

Ivorien Soldiers Accept Deal To End mutiny – Spokesmen

The leaders of a nationwide military mutiny in Cote d’Ivoire have accepted a government proposal on bonus payments and agreed to return to barracks and end their revolt, two spokesmen told Reuters in the city of Bouake on Tuesday.

“We accept the government’s proposal … We are returning to barracks now,” said Sergeant Seydou Kone, one of the revolt’s leaders.

The renegade soldiers, who have paralysed cities and towns across the West African cocoa grower since Friday, rejected an earlier deal announced by Defence Minister Alain-Richard Donwahi late on Monday.

Under the proposal accepted by the soldiers, 8,400 mutineers – mostly former rebel fighters who helped President Alassane Ouattara to power – will receive an immediate bonus payment of 5 million CFA francs ($8,400). Another 2 million CFA francs will then be paid at the end of next month.

“We’ve just handed back control of the entrances to the city to the police and gendarmes this morning, and we’re returning to our barracks,” said Sergeant Cisse, another spokesman for the group, referring to Bouake, the epicentre of the uprising.

23- year -old spinster, Khadija Ibrahim, on Monday sued her father, Bassa Ibrahim, before an Upper Area Court, Karu, Abuja, for not allowing her to marry a man of her choice.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Khadija told the court that she had a suitor, who was willing to marry her, but her father refused to give his consent.

She said, “The man I want to marry has made several attempts to meet my father to discuss the wedding plan, but he always avoided him.

“The only reason he gave me was that the man I want to marry is not Fulani, which is not satisfactory to me.”She pleaded with the court to order her father to allow her to get married to the suitor, whose name she gave as Abdulhamidu.

The respondent, Bassa, told the court that the allegations of his daughter were true.

He said,

“I have always avoided Abdulhamidu because I am against his choice as a suitor.

“I have warned my daughter that marriage is not a child’s play. How can she get married to a man whose root and origin are not known to us?”The judge Abdullahi Baba adjourned the matter till May 29.

Fayose Removes PDP Logo From Campaign Office, Billboards

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has adjusted his campaign strategies ahead of next year’s governorship election.

The Nation learnt yesterday Fayose removed the logo and name of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from his campaign office at Olora junction, Adebayo, Ado- Ekiti.

It was gathered the one storey building was repainted white, with every insignia of PDP removed.
Before repainting, the building had Fayose’s picture embossed on PDP logo with the inscription: “Fayose Our Leader, Architect of Modern Ekiti.”

The governor installed a billboard close to the gate of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), without the PDP name and logo.

The Nation observed that the mini signposts mounted on Ado-Ikere Road, bearing the logo and name of PDP alongside Fayose’s name, have been removed.

They were replaced with ones without PDP name and logo, but with Fayose’s pictures, and the statement: “Ni 2018, E Standby”, meaning “My People Be on Standby in 2018.”

Posters with the above inscription, which have no PDP logo, were pasted in Ado-Ekiti.
A source said the uncertainty hanging over PDP was responsible for the governor’s action.

“Fayose does not want to be caught unawares. Nobody knows how the PDP factional crisis will end. It will be suicidal for him to wait till the end of litigation at the Supreme Court,” the source said.Fayose is believed to be heading for the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the platform on which he is expected to anoint a successor for the 2018 governorship election.
His tenure will end on October 15, 2018, while the governorship poll will hold in about a year from now.
The battle for the soul of the PDP at the national level has shifted to the Supreme Court, which adjourned the case till May 25.
National Chairman Ali Modu Sheriff heads one faction, while the other, which Fayose belongs, is led by the National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi.

Man Kills Friend Who Saw Him Robbing Residents

A 20-year-old man, Badmus Gbadamosi, has been accused of killing his friend and roommate, Friday Michael.

It was gathered that Gbadamosi killed 27-year-old Michael in the Mamu area of Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Command’s spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said late Michael saw his friend two different times while on robbery operations with his gang members.

“Gbadamosi is a member of a notorious gang terrorising the residents of Mamu and its environs. Michael saw him with his gang members while they were robbing some people in the area.

“After the second time, Gbadamosi became uncomfortable. It was the fear that the deceased might eventually expose him that prompted him to sniff life out of Michael.

“Apart from being friend, late Michael and Gbadamosi were also roommates. On May 13, 2017, at Mamu area of Ijebu, the suspect came in around 6.30pm and shot Michael, who was sleeping, with a locally-made pistol, killing him instantly.”

It was gathered that the sound of the gunshot attracted other occupants of the house, who alerted the the police.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation,” Oyeyemi said.

Lagos Hairdresser Commits Suicide Over N150,000 Loan

A hairdresser, Yetunde Oladipupo, aka Iyabo, has committed suicide on Onabola Street, Owotutu, in the Somolu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Oladipupo took an insecticide, Sniper, on Friday shortly after seeing off some friends who had visited her.

It was gathered that the mother of four went to a shop afterwards and bought the insecticide.She was alleged to have taken it and was later rushed to the General Hospital, Gbagada, where she died.

It was learnt that the Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State indigene, had taken a loan of about N150,000 from a microfinance bank and the creditor had been pestering her to pay.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the victim was always depressed because she had no means of repaying the debt.

He said,

“Iyabo (Oladipupo) has four children and her husband is based in Abuja. He comes home once in a while. She was a hairdresser and had a small shop where she sold some things.

“She borrowed N150,000 from a microfinance bank. When the pressure became too much for her and she could not pay, she became desperate, drank the insecticide and died.”

Another resident said two friends had visited her a few minutes before the incident, adding that it was after the visit that she decided to take her life.

She said,

“Around 7pm, two friends visited her and she saw them off. As she was returning, she went to a shop opposite her house where they sell provisions.

“After picking the insecticide, she asked the shopkeeper for a nylon wrapper, but the shopkeeper declined her request and said she should return the insecticide. She kept it somewhere around her dress and left.

“As she was ascending the stairs to the first floor where she lived, she drank the insecticide. Within seconds, she started feeling uncomfortable and called her five-year-old child to go and get help. She was rolling on the floor and groaning with pain.

“Everybody was alarmed upon seeing the empty container of the insecticide. She was taken to a private hospital on the street, but she was rejected. She was then rushed to the General Hospital, Gbagada, where about five doctors struggled to save her life. She, however, died.”

A top official of the general hospital confirmed that the victim was brought to the hospital around 7pm, adding that she died in the early hours of Saturday.
