While more people are getting sick and turning to natural solutions for their medical issues here come the bees once again to the rescue.

Combined research with cutting-edge proteomics found that Cape(Caffeic acid phenethyl ester) an isolated compound found in propolis arrests early-stage prostate cancer.

Why is this not gaining acceptance in the clinic?

Its only been used as a natural remedy for centuries!

I was talking to some family friends as they recounted a story of a neighbor whose house was infested with bees but rather than call a Beekeeper or Bee Removal Service, they decided that if they sealed the entry hole used by the bees they would be trap the colony inside and they would just die from lack of food.

That got me to thinking, not only was that completely inhumane but completely wrong!

Now maybe I have been watching too many episodes of Doomsday Preppers and Doomsday Bunkers but I think Bees are nature's ultimate survivalists. Bee's work together as a community to sustain the colony. They store honey and use what they store to live off until they can fight their way out.

Just as I expected, a month later the bees were using the same route after some how removing the seal created by the homeowner.

I must say, I love nature.
In the link above they talk about how papers have been released pointing to neonicotinoids(a widely used class of insecticide which is contributing to the bee deaths and disappearance since 2006 across the US.

We need to stop poisoning our pollinating companions.
Margate and Hollywood ban beekeeping in residential areas. Fort Lauderdale allows neighborhood beekeeping, but is considering stronger regulations. Cities that allow beekeeping can turn to nuisance ordinances if they want to force hives out of neighborhoods.
And if the city isn't the problem, a homeowners association can be. Many of them ban beekeeping.
"The regulations are not there to protect the bees, and that's the sad part, because the bee population is going downhill," said Leonard Khan, president of the Palm Beach County Beekeepers Association.

Proponents of residential beekeeping see the bees as essential. They support urban agriculture, produce local honey and beeswax, and help suppress more aggressive Africanized bee strains. However, opponents say the bees are a problem, can cause allergic reactions, and hives should not be allowed near homes.
"I see them as pests," said Fort Lauderdale resident Charlie King, who recently paid $450 to have a hive removed from a rental home he owns in Victoria Park. "To me, bees belong out in the agricultural environment pollinating crops. In the city, they're a nuisance."
Beekeeping is allowed on land zoned for agriculture under Florida's right-to-farm laws.
Leo Gosser, a beekeeper with hives in Parkland, said domesticated bees are not the threat some people perceive. They are a critical component to bringing agriculture back to the cities, he said.
"If they want to have community gardens, if they want to have backyard gardens, they've got to have bees," said Gosser, president of the Broward Beekeepers Association.
The European honeybees being raised are already under stress. Colony Collapse Disorder, which scientists still don't know the cause of, has decimated bee populations across the country in the past five years.
"Beekeepers keeping European bees, some have lost up to 40 percent of their hives," said Bill Kern, an associate professor at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center in Davie. Colony collapse has been more prevalent at larger commercial operations than among hobbyists with 10 or fewer hives, he said.
The European strain also faces infiltration by more aggressive Africanized bees.
"The Africanized bees are doing really well," Kern said, indicating they are more resilient to colony collapse because their queen bees continue brooding throughout the wintertime. "Most of the swarms that we have in South Florida, we're probably looking at 90 percent of new swarms, new colonies, are primarily Africanized."
State officials recommend residents south of Interstate 4 who find find hives or large clusters of bees on their property have the bees exterminated, not relocated, for fear they may be the more aggressive, Africanized variety.
Gosser and other beekeepers disagree with that recommendation, saying many of the swarms can be saved unless the bees are extremely aggressive. Gosser said almost all of his 10 hives came from removals he did.
Beekeepers say their hives help keep Africanized bees from taking over by providing established populations of the more docile, European honeybees.
"Bees are everywhere. If you don't have our typical stock in the area, and take them all away, something is going to fill that void," said Gary Ranker, president of the Florida State Beekeepers Association. "What moves in is the Africanized bees."
Beekeepers are trying to get the decision about beekeeping out of the hands of local governments.
They are working to get state legislators to approve the Beekeepers Protection Act, which would have state agriculture officials writing the rules. Part of the legislation would prevent local governments from banning beekeeping in residential areas.
"One thing that's really come along, these municipalities are making up the rules and they're not experts in the field," Ranker said. "They're basically going online and making up some kind of law based on somebody else's rule or law."
Fort Lauderdale's proposal would allow up to four beehives per lot in all zoning districts. The hives would have to be at least 25 feet from the property line. They would have to be screened by a minimum 6-foot-tall fence or hedge that would divert the bees flight path to a higher level to keep them out of a direct line with people.
State records show 2,232 registered beekeepers in the state, including 1,392 "hobbyist beekeepers" with 10 or fewer hives. Palm Beach County has 63 registered beekeepers, including 42 hobbyists. Broward County has 29 registered, including 14 hobbyists. Miami-Dade County has 45 registered, including 20 hobbyists.
Although the state requires registration, which includes an annual inspection there are many beekeepers who haven't registered, Khan said. They're trying to keep a low profile so they don't run afoul of neighbors or local governments, he said.
"People are operating in fear of a hobby that's the lifeline of the agricultural industry of this country, of any country," Khan said.
King said he's not sure how beekeeping in residential areas became legal in the first place.
"I think it's crazy that this is legal already," King said. "If you live next door to [a beekeeper], I feel like the city is just throwing you to the wolves."
