App Review: iVideo Camera

A Review of the iVideo Camera Application for the iPhone 3G which allows you to record video from your phone and store it locally or upload to sites like twitter, facebook, youtube etc all on the go with 3G connection or Wi-Fi.

Priced at .99 cents this new app approved by apple allows video recording from a device that was only formerly capable of taking only snapshots. Unless however you were jailbroken and used an app like Cycorder. None the less this app offers an okay frame rate and quality modes of high and low, it also offers multiple sharing options to different sites or friends that have the same app with wi-fi share enabled . To top it off it has live effects that can be used during your recording , it also adapts to landscape and portrait shots. To see more check out my video review posted below:

Mobile RSS iPhone app review

About a month ago I was looking for a good rss reader for the iPhone. I did some searches, but I had a hard time finding one that I liked and that synced with google reader. I hauled my search once I came across Mobile RSS.
Mobile RSS has been working great for me for at least a month now. You can view each feed individually or one feed with “All Subscriptions” in order of date published. At the bottom of every feed regardless of weather it’s the master feed or an individual you have the option to view just new posts or all posts. This feature is nice to free up space when you just want to see new posts or go back and reread an older post.
Though this app is great you have to pay to remove the ads. I was fortunate enough to get the paid version before it was paid. But now there is a free version with ads at the bottom of every post (which are not that annoying), a $2.99 version (what I have) which is the free version without ads, and a $4.99 version with the only extra feature being searching your feeds.
I would recommend trying out the free version for a week or two and if you find that this app fits your needs go for the $2.99 version.

Windows 7 Betas to be De-Activated

If you were one of the beta testers of Windows 7 when the pre-beta was announced on microsofts website that was claimed to run till June 1st of 2010 will still usable but will need to be activated at the start of March 1st. A warning is issued showing how much time you have left to active windows with a OEM copy or upgrade all together to a OEM version from the beta. If not windows will shut down every 2 hours without saving current work as directly quoted from Microsoft site

The Windows 7 RC expires on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, PCs running Windows 7 RC began shutting down every two hours.

If you’re still running the RC, your PC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data.

So now you have the option of either backing up all your data and buy Windows 7 and upgrade from the beta version or downgrade to vista or xp , in my case I took my windows 7 install and installed my Intel X-25 M SSD in my computer and partitioned that drive for a new XP Pro install and migrated my important data from windows 7 . Also take advantage of tools like Foxmarks, Carbonite , etc for online back up of data and bookmarks and sites from browsers etc to transfer over to your new OS install.

My personal opinions on the matter is that Microsoft will annoy some users with the whole upgrade phase by shutting down their PC’s every 2 hours and don’t even give you the courtesy of saving your current work. Also complaints of people who are using their windows 7 beta install for projects etc as its their main OS and only have several hours to upgrade of course you can go out and buy a windows 7 CD and carry on though it will still annoy plenty of people and I’m sure hacks around the activation time will be up on the web in a matter of days.

So what are your opinions will you be upgrading to 7 Ultimate or downgrading to XP or vista , for the time being I’ll be on XP till I can get a windows 7 disc then migrate my data over.

Teamspeak Server Updated!

One of the reasons we recently switched to a VPS was so we could host our website on the same server as our teamspeak server. Recently, thanks to some help from Tornadochas3r, we setup out teamspeak server again. Now we are using the new Teamspeak 3 and all of its cool new features. Some of the most notable new features are improved voice quality, avatars, and file transfers. Thanks to the higher quality audio we may begin recording our podcast on teamspeak instead of Skype because of the lower latency.

Now lets get to the important stuff, how to download Teamspeak and connect to our server!

How to backup all of your YouTube videos

I have always been looking for a reasonable way to backup an entire youtube users videos, but I have never found a viable solution until recently. It’s a free piece of software called “Free YouTube Downlad“.

This piece of software allows you to download a single youtube video, complete playlists, videos responses to a video, all of a users favorites, and even an entire channel.

Sometime soon me or Adrian one will most likely make a video reviewing this application. I would, but it’s currently backing up the lakercoolman channel which will be done in a few days.

My Thoughts on Apple’s iPad

Apple released it’s new line in the mac product the apple “iPad“. It’s there launch at a mid product between it’s mobile iPhone and the macbook line , a device that is powerful and can do main things like run video , music, internet while keeping its mobility and adding its own features like the app store and iBook store to add a new innovation to the tablet like device. This new product personally I think will revolutionize the market as apple usually does it comes in as a mobile laptop/mobile device like there macbooks and ipod touches/iPhones but also comes into new markets like E-book readers and is all touch. The device itself is a thin and features a 9.7 inch LED screen. The operating system is based off of the iPhones OSX like operating system and supports all existing app store apps , along with a new SDK on its way for developers to take more advantage of the iPads features.

My personal thoughts on the device are stated in the video and pictures will also be posted below.

How To Enable Taskbar Previews On Mozilla Firefox 3.6 (Windows 7 Feature)

Note, this only works with Windows 7. If you had been testing Mozilla Firefox 3.6’s betas, you would know that it had Taskbar/Superbar Previous on it, like on IE 8. Yesterday, I was searching around on about:config, to see if I find something fun to mess around, but instead, I found out the following name:

“browser.taskbar.previews.enable”, and it was defined as “false”. So all you do to enable the taskbar previews, is just to change it to true.

And voilá! You have it enabled again, and you can see a screenshot of it below:

YouTube 360/480/720/1080 Rant

As I’m sure all of you have noticed, recently YouTube has recent introduced a new video player. It features a sleeker design with an updated “HD” button. The the new player let’s you decide between 360/480/720P and 1080P. Yes this is nice, but why? What is the need for a 320P and 480P version of every video? There is a very minimal difference in actual video size (Mb’s and Gb’s) between 480P and 360P. So why not go with the higher quality. I’m sure that the 360P version of videos is for mobile phones, but then why show them for an option online?
Why can they just do like before with an “SD” and “HD” button? SD would be 480P and HD would be 720P by default, unless the video also had a 1080P option. How is my grandmother supposed to know the difference between 360, 480, 720, and 1080P? She does know the difference between HD and SD, but now am I supposed to tell her click on the highest number?

I know I’m making this a bigger deal than it is, but it kind of annoys me. Tell me what you think in the comments.

Site Update & News

As you may have noticed the site has been experiencing some downtime and a lack of content lately. This is because we recently switched servers to better cope with our needs. We have upgraded to a VPS (Virtual Private Server) with Hostgator to accommodate our teamspeak server alongside our websites. Now we have a more powerful plan, so we don’t have to host our teamspeak server with another provider. Currently the teamspeak server is down and I’m working on setting up the new Teamspeak 3 software on the server. This should be up by the weekend (I’ll tweet the info when it’s up). Also now that we have our own IP’s we can map the teamspeak server to our domain meaning that instead of entering in an IP for the teamspeak server you could just enter in adrianstech.com to simplify things.

Also as you may have noticed the site is using a new theme. I could not get the post thumbnails on the previous theme working, so I decided to try a new one. I’m not sure if kidguru likes the new theme or not so it may be around for only a short while. If you like this theme or would rather see the old one please leave a comment!

Current Updates: Tech-World Sites

Recently as some of you may have noticed content flow has been slowed down for a number of reasons, after returning from a winter break trip final exams for school have been coming up meaning lots of studying and homework etc, cutting down a lot of time in my schedule . Along with that I’ve been playing some Call of Duty MW2 =) in the little spare time I get. Not only that but I’ve been working on some other projects along with Joshua Oakes (wee493) on moving our sites over to our new VPS host plan , meaning all the sites need to be moved along with upgrading the Teamspeak 3 server and fixing all the bugs along the way for example the adrianstech blog theme is still being worked on till further notice we’ll be using the old theme. As for the podcasting schedule, all shows and release of news shows have been rescheduled and will soon start again, tech-world podcast along with the other shows will still be produced but may take time in getting uploaded. Though after exams and all is cleared I’ll be dedicating all my time off to producing content and getting the daily flow for the blog, youtube videos, podcasting etc back into rhythm, till then please be patient as bugs of the sites are fixed and content is postponed, for any feedback suggestions etc email the team at adrianstech@gmail.com

3D Gaming’s Cons

This year CES showed gaming’s next-to-be: 3D

The 3D world is making a big step for video games, much likely it being a big step for movies. This feature has left gamers waiting for its introduction. The consumer’s excitement is understandable, but the question is this; Can you imagine yourself just playing COD: Modern Warfare 2 in 3D? It won’t matter if your answer id yes or no because I’am here to talk about the cons of 3D gaming.

Recently Jon4Lakers on YouTube uploaded a video showing 3D gaming in CES, it struck me and pretty much why I wrote this blog. Gamers as you know play hours and hours in front of the TV playing video games, thus they apparently get poor eyesight. For me at the age of 13 I play almost 3 hours on more playing UNCHARTED 2 on the PS3, so I have a bit of trouble seeing things far away. All of that is caused by staring at screens all day long. Now, imagine again playing MW2 in 3D for lets say 3 hours. Is it cool? Of course it is! But, do you think it would make you dizzy after taking off your glasses? Yea, no its up to you. Just keep in mind that gaming whether 3D or not can affect your life.

3D movies was a great experience for me, they make great impact to people. If game publishers push through and sell 3D games, gaming would change, A LOT. Lets start off here: First, if your playing intensely you’ll ruin your eyes. Second, 3D would just be a regular thing not a great experience anymore. Third and lastly, Everyone COULD get sick of it. All I think that 3D gaming could just be a chance in life or even just being used for every other month. It would be perfect for special gaming conventions, or arcades. I’m not making a stand here. 3D has its Pros and there are lots of it, all of this is just alerts.

Tips: Saving iPhone/iTouch Battery Life

Saving Battery iPhone/iTouch Battery Life

This winter break I was flying over to California and needed to bring my gadgets with me of course to use over the 12 hour flight. The main one being my iPhone for music , video , apps etc. Problem was that I was worried about the battery life though my phone is jailbroken there are some extra features that contribute to my battery usage compared to non-jail broken phones. So here are some tips for both the non-jailbroken and jailbroken iphone users.

Free up memory – If your on a non-jailbroken phone a great app to get to free up background processes and free memory on your phone/touch is MemoryInfo a simple button click frees up memory for your phone to keep it running smooth and fast. If your on a jailbroken phone with SBSettings installed it has a similar function and even gives you options to manually end background apps like “Ipod” etc.
Screen Brightness – The iphone and touch’s screen takes a tole on it battery if its constantly on especially during a video if the brightness is turned up all the way , turning it to a lower settings or also turning off the auto-brightness feature which tunes the phones brightness depending on environment.
Network Settings- Network settings like Wi-Fi, 3G, Edge etc are huge battery drainers , turning off Wi-Fi when not in a wi-fi zone or don’t require a connection then switch it off to save life also in times were you wont need to take calls or really need to save life turn of your 3G/edge signal for example at school when I really don’t expect to call friends or text them then I turn 3G off. Also if you’ll be on a flight or a time were you just want to turn off all types of network signal off then just switch to airplane mode to switch off 3G ,Wi-fi , etc.
Notifications- Notifications from application updates that are constant can take a toll your life as well , the new 3.0 update gives you great options to adjust which apps notify you and what for for example for some twitter apps can notify you specifically for DM , @ replies , etc.
Push- Push from email clients or exchange servers etc are one of the biggest battery life drainers though haven’t been as bad with the 3.0 update , though still users experience issues with push emails taking up to even 10% of their battery life . Some things you can do is go into the settings for your email and changing time that email checks for updates by hour or even set them to manually check only when you open the email client.
Updates- Whether your using the regular app store or even using Cydia on the jailbroken phone always keep up to date on your apps so older versions never have leaks or older mods don’t effect battery life and your apps stay up to date.
Sleep- Some people forget to turn there phones or ipods to sleep mode when using it for example your screen doesn’t need to be running when your listening to music so why not just turn it to sleep mode to save life.
Percent Battery- Percentage battery is much easier to tell your battery life compared to the visual bar, for the iphone 3Gs you can go into your general settings to toggle the percentage battery or on a jailbroken phone you can use SbSettings to toggle on the same feature this allows you to view your battery life much easier.
Charging Habbits- If you experienced rapid drainage on your battery lately try to change your charging habits , a writer over at DuncsWeb DanofMayz recommended on only charging your phone when its down to 2% and then charging to full so your battery stays in cycle also try to run down your battery to 0 and doing a complete recharge every month or so to recycle your battery.
Back Up – Back up batteries are now available all over the place for both iPhone and touch jailbroken or not these external gadgets that you charge up and can plug into your device to charge can work almost as quick as an hour or two to give you nearly 90% new life. Though this does require the need for another gadget to carry , there are also other great alternatives like cases/accessories to put your device into to charge when your device runs low. A great battery case to check out is the Mophie Juice Pack.
