The only difference between tags you can see (on a blogpost, say) and tags you can’t see is location: meta tags only exist in HTML, usually at the “head” of the page, and so are only visible to search engines (and people who know where to look). The “meta” stands for “metadata,” which is the kind of data these tags provide – data about the data on your page.

Do Meta Tags Help SEO?

Yes, they do, but not all of them and not all of the time. One of the goals of this page is to explain which meta tags help you to get the word out and which have become passé. (See Know Your Meta Tags below).
If you want to find out whether a given page is using meta tags, just right-click anywhere on the page and select “View Page Source.”
A new tab will open in Chrome (in Firefox, it’ll be a pop-up window). The part at the top, or “head” of the page, is where the meta tags could be.

Know Your Meta Tags

There are four major types of meta tags worth knowing about and we’ll talk about them all here. Some are not as useful as they once were. Others are worth using regularly, and will very likely increase your traffic by letting Google know who you are and what you provide. (There are more than four kinds of meta tags, but some are less common or not relevant to web marketing).
The four types we’ll discuss here are:

Meta Keywords Attribute - A series of keywords you deem relevant to the page in question.
Title Tag - This is the text you'll see at the top of your browser. Search engines view this text as the "title" of your page.
Meta Description Attribute - A brief description of the page.
Meta Robots Attribute - An indication to search engine crawlers (robots or "bots") as to what they should do with the page.

Meta Keywords Attribute

Meta Keywords are an example of a meta tag that doesn’t make much sense to use these days. Years ago, the meta keyword tags may have been beneficial, but not anymore.
Remember back in kindergarten and when your teacher gave you a stern look and said “if you can’t stop using those crayons while I’m talking, I’m going to take them away from you,” and you didn’t listen and, to your shock, they were indeed taken away? That’s sort of what Google did with meta keywords.

Years ago, marketers eager for page views would insert keywords totally unrelated to their pages into their code in an attempt to pirate traffic from the more popular pages, those that actually were about Lindsay Lohan, or whoever was then trending. This was known as "keyword stuffing." Google eventually got wise to this and decided in the end to devalue the tool. These days Google doesn’t use meta keywords in its ranking algorithm at all, because they're too easy to abuse.

Title Tag

Title tags, on the other hand, are the most important of all of the meta tags discussed here. These tags have a real impact on search rankings and, perhaps just as importantly, are the only one of the tags we’ll discuss here that are visible to the average user. You’ll find them at the top of your browser (for organic search pages or for PPC landing pages):

This is particularly useful if you want to give the page one primary title for the user but want to clarify or simplify that information for SEO purposes and for the user who’s shuffling multiple tabs on their desktop.

Meta Description Attribute

This is a quite useful meta tag as, very simply, it explains to search engines and (sometimes) searchers themselves what your page is about. Let’s say you were googling the phrase “meta keywords” for example. You might encounter the following results:

It’s important to note that the description tag won’t always show up in the results for a Google search (Google frequently picks a snippet of text from the page itself) but it’s useful in other ways. Google has also stated that keywords in meta descriptions won’t affect your rankings. However, a compelling meta description tag could entice searchers to click through from the SERP to your site, especially if the description includes the keywords they were searching for.
Google’s reasons are somewhat mysterious, but their actions speak loudly: meta keywords don’t much matter anymore, but meta descriptions most certainly do.

Meta Robots Attribute

With this attribute, you're telling the search engines what to do with your pages:

index/noindex - This tells the engines whether to show your page in search results or not.
follow/nofollow - This tells the engines what to do with links on your pages: whether they should trust and "follow" your links to the next page or not.

Titles and meta descriptions alone aren't going to get you to the top of the competitive terms but making sure you tick the basic SEO boxes is essential to your long term SEO strategy.

What is a title tag

A title tag is essentially the name of the web page. The title tag is displayed in the tab at the top of the page when you view it and are they often used on search engine results pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets for a given page. They are very important for search engine optimisation (SEO) and social sharing.
Title tags should always make sense to the person searching for your website and ideally the wording should be based upon research into keyword search popularity and relevance to the page itself.
Title tags have long been considered one of the most important on-page SEO elements; the most important being overall content.

Tips on creating powerful title tags

title tags should be a maximum of 66 characters long, including spaces
the most important keywords need to be at the start of your title tag, with your least important words being at the end (left to right).
try to use pipes (sometimes referred to as vertical bars) to separate your phrases and avoid using any other form of punctuation such as hyphens, asterisks, or underscores.
keep your important phrases short and simple.
put your company name or organisation at the end of the title tag, unless you don't need to include it at all. We include ours for branding purposes and in some instances Google will move your company name to the start of the tag in any event - the SEO value is not diluted in these cases.

Key mistakes to avoid

not creating a page title at all.
repeating or spamming keywords (search engines will think you're trying to beat the system and you will be penalised).
making the titles too long. Search engines limit the number of characters which are displayed in SERPs and if they are too long they are truncated and not read by the crawling robots. Optimal titles should be between 50 and 60 characters.
giving all of your page titles the same name.
giving your page the same name as your business or website.
naming the page without connecting it to your page content.

What are meta descriptions?

Meta descriptions, though not important to search engine rankings, are extremely important for providing valuable click through from search engine results pages to your website. Whilst Google officially tell us that meta descriptions don't affect SEO, click through rate definitely does, so it's useful (albeit not essential) to have meta descriptions for every page on your site.

Meta description length

Meta descriptions can essentially be any length, although most search engines will truncate anything longer than 144 characters. This means that anything you write after this point will never be read. Some argue that any additional characters could be viewed as an attempt at spamming, so best advice is stick to less than 144 and you'll be fine.
Another tip is to try to keep your key information within the first 60 words. On occasion Google may display big site-links which may truncate your description even further.

Unique meta descriptions for every page

We recommend that you have a unique meta description for every page on your site. If you don't have unique descriptions you're actually better off having none at all; or least have unique descriptions for your important pages and nothing on your less important ones. Never duplicate descriptions.
Matt Cutts, who leads Google's Web Spam team and is considered to be the foremost authority on search engine optimisation issues advises:
"The way I think of it is you can either have a unique meta tag description, or you can choose to have no meta tag description, but I wouldn't have duplicate meta tag descriptions."

Keywords

Meta descriptions display with searched keywords highlighted in bold, so incorporating your targeted keywords into the meta description can help to further highlight your search result to potential visitors.

Local telephone numbers

Using a local telephone number in your meta description can very useful as it enables users to contact you without even loading your website. Particularly useful if you're a tradesman who offers an emergency service and your main call to action is contact by phone and also means your bounce rate won't be negatively impacted. Also useful for existing customers that need to call you but don't need to visit your site.

Be concise

As mentioned in some of our previous blog posts it's really important to think about how a typical user reads the information set out in front of them on the screen. Most of us quickly scan the page and decide in a matter of seconds (or quicker in many cases) whether or not we're interested in the content.
There's no need to get all flowery and verbose here, say what you need to say as concisely as you can. Make sure the searcher wants to visit your website before they go off elsewhere.

Write interesting copy

You need to clearly explain why a user should want to visit your site. Your meta description is essentially a marketing message and you need to make sure that it communicates the value the customer will get by visiting your site.

Incorporate a clear call to action

By including a call to action in your meta description you are advising the user exactly what you would like them to do; this is more likely to elicit the response you want.
An example here would simply be to include the term 'give us a call' or 'contact us today'.
Asking people to do something often results in readers taking the action you’ve requested. Other possible calls to action for your meta descriptions include “Discover how,” “Read more about,” “Click here,” or other related variations.

When not to include a meta description

There are some occasions when it is not necessary to include a meta description on some of your web pages. Google will automatically add a description using copy from your page content, so If your page is targeting long tail keywords you might be better off omitting the meta description and allowing Google to decide what it feels is the relevant text.

Whether you’ve been blogging for five minutes or five years, monetizing is one of those topics that almost always comes up. Should I try to make money from blogging? Can people really make a living online? How should I try to make money from my blog?

Google AdSense is one of the most common ways to monetize, though I’ll warn you now: AdSense is NOT a get rick quick scheme. In fact, it can take a long time to make more than a few pennies. But it can also pay off big in the long run.

What is AdSense?

AdSense is a program that allows bloggers and website owners to make money by displaying Google ads. You’ve probably seen the ads all over the place, including in Google search results. Basically, Google gets the largest cut and you get a small percentage. There are two ways to make money from AdSense:

Impressions – this is based on the number of pageviews of pages or posts with ads
Clicks – this is based on how many people click on the ads (don’t EVER click your own – more on this later)

To make it as basic as possible, you sign up for an AdSense account and add the code to your blog or website. You can choose how your ads look, where they show up, and even what kind of ads you’ll accept. Once you get to a minimum threshold of $100, Google will either send you a paper check or make a direct deposit into your bank account.

Who’s Eligible?

If you use Blogger, you can use the Monetize tab to set up and manage an AdSense account.
If you use self-hosted WordPress, you can visit the AdSense website and apply for an account. You’ll receive a code that you can place wherever you’d like, or you can use a plugin to help with placement.
*If you use free WordPress, you cannot use AdSense, but you can use WordAds if you have your own custom domain. (Just another reason why self-hosted WordPress is better.)

How Much Can I Make?

As I told you before, you will not get rich quick using AdSense. It took me 9 months to make $2 (yes, two dollars) on my personal blog. However, I made $81 last month. That’s still pathetic compared to many blogs – some people can earn a full-time income from AdSense alone. But it takes a LONG time to get there, and you have to have a ton of traffic.

Some ads are worth more money per click than others. This is also affected by the amount of traffic you get, the keywords the person searched for, the percentage of visitors who click on a particular ad, etc. There are a LOT of factors that determine how much you’ll make, but a rule of thumb is that newer blogs simply won’t make as much money.

My personal blog is about 14 months old. Some days, I don’t get any ad clicks at all and I might still make 10 cents or so just from impressions. Sometimes every click is worth $2 or more. Yesterday the clicks were worth a whopping 26 cents each.

Many people get impatient when they’ve had the code up for a month or two and haven’t made more than a few pennies. If you’re looking for something that will pay TODAY, AdSense may not be for you. And to be honest, I don’t know of anything instant – if I did, you can bet I’d be using it!

How Can I Make More from AdSense?

Basically, your best bet for ad clicks is increasing your search traffic. When people are trying to solve a problem, they usually turn to search engines like Google or Bing. If you have a post that solves that problem, using SEO will help your post rank well in search results. SEO will also help AdSense serve up relevant ads, so when people click on your blog post, the ads may answer the exact question they’re asking. Result? Ad clicks!
Here’s an example. Let’s say I write a post about the health risks of liposuction. I use SEO techniques to help Google realize what my post is about, and my post is the third one when someone searches for “liposuction risks.” AdSense also knows what my post is about, so people reading my post will see an ad that might say something like, “Safe liposuction services in New Hampshire” (or wherever).
If the person is interested in finding the safest place for liposuction, s/he is likely to click that ad. As I said before, the rate per click depends on a lot of factors, but my concern is making sure that people read MY post and not others! If they go to another blog to read about liposuction risks, they’re possibly clicking that person’s ads instead of mine.

IMPORTANT!

There are a few things you need to know about AdSense before you ever put the code on your blog.

1. Never, ever click your own ads. In case you aren’t aware, Google pretty much knows everything. And they can tell if you’re clicking your own ads. It’s very tempting to click about 50 times and make some money, but all it will do is result in being banned.

2. Never, ever encourage friends or family to click your ads. Same as above. You can and will be banned from AdSense, and don’t ever think Google won’t figure it out. I don’t know how they do it, but I have seen it happen to people I know. JUST DON’T.

3. Pay attention to your ad clicks. If you average 2 clicks a month and you suddenly get 100 in a day, chances are that something is wrong. If you’ve pissed someone off and they decide to fight back by clicking all over the place, you can get banned even though you didn’t do anything.

4. Never rely on AdSense as your sole income source. Even if you get really good at SEO and you have 100 websites making thousands of dollars each month in AdSense, you never know when something could happen to trigger Google’s no-no sensors. You can make good money with AdSense, but you should also use other monetization strategies just in case.

5. Don’t use more than 3 ad blocks on a single page. Google allows up to 3 ad blocks on a page. So if you have one in your header, one in your sidebar, and one at the end of your post, that’s the limit for that page. Also, don’t plaster ads all over the place and annoy your regular readers! There are ways to implement the ads without making your site ugly.

Work from home has become very welcome for so many people today. Working out of home seems such a wonderfully relaxed way of doing things but it isn't that simple. The lack of security in this job should be taken into account. To get the freedom and independence for those able to do so, a certain amount of discipline will be required.

Many people who would like to venture into working from home opportunities are often lured by 'make millions in a month' due to their desire to make quick and easy money. Very occasionally these might work; however, they rarely work sufficiently well as the advertising and hype make out. Opportunities such as paid surveys and home based data entry jobs promise to make you rich but they very often don't deliver what they state. The very thought of completing a couple of surveys during the day and earning a few hundreds like this is a joke - data entry will not make you rich.

All of these different types of activities are basically not sustainable for anyone that is seeking out a way to earn some extra money from working at home regularly. At first, it probably isn't going to be easy, but once you get into a regular routine and things get a bit more organized, it becomes more comfortable. Who knows, you could then start giving out work to writers too and this is probably when you can get into the better paying league.

Although it can be risky working for yourself, it would appear this is not deterring people who are frustrated with their regular jobs from having a go at making money online instead.
