Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf
(but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden system components in that sysoc.inf file, too. Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at your own risk.

Windows Vista throttles your network bandwidth when you are playing any multimedia file such as an MP3 or a video. This was designed to ensure the CPU has enough free cycles available to play your media without skipping. The down side is that when you are playing a multimedia file you will notice that your network speed of file transfers will decrease on high speed network connections. By default when you are playing a multimedia file your network transfers are limited to 10 packets per millisecond.

In Windows Vista SP1 Microsoft introduces a registry key that allows you to customize this setting.

You can actually remove the Find and Run options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key:

registry key that you just created and create yet another new key named Command. Enter the full path of the application, in this case Notepad in the default value of Command in the right pane. So I Modify the value of the default string value and enter the full pathname of Notepad:

IPCONFIG is one of the most useful little utilities on your computer (for Windows systems), especially for helping you to debug network issues. IPCONFIG can be used to show your current TCP/IP information, including your address, DNS server addresses, adapter type and so on.

This is most useful if you are using DHCP (a method to automatically assign TCP/IP information needed by a computer). Since the TCP/IP information, including the address, is assigned when the computer is booted, it is not known until boot time. IPCONFIG will show that information at any time.

How to make Vista Faster: In the following simple solution, I'll show you how to make Vista Startup and Shutdown faster. There are many options available to make your Windows Vista quicker, however, many of these options require reducing Vista's functionality. We will try to focus on options that do not limit functionality.

Making Windows Vista Boot and Shutdown Faster:
Perform a "Disk Cleanup":
Click Start and type Disk Cleanup in the Start Search box, then press Enter and follow the onscreen instructions
Run "Disk Defragmenter":
Click Start and type Disk Defragmenter in the Start Search box, then press Enter and follow the onscreen instructions (select Defragment Now)
Empty the "Windows Prefetch" Directory:
Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete all files and folders within, then reboot. After the first couple of reboots, Windows Vista should boot and shutdown faster

Those are just a few tricks that I use to help Windows Vista Boot or Startup and Shutdown quicker. Of course there are many more options like removing programs you never use, stopping programs from launching at startup and reducing Vista eye candy visual effects like Windows Aero.

Keep in mind that just like it's predecessors, Windows Vista will slow down over time as you fill the hard drive with information. Performing these steps at regular intervals should help keep your system speedy and performing well

Setup cannot copy the file cmnicfg.xml: Typically, a user will receive this error during a Windows XP installation. The other day, a friend of mine decided to uninstall Windows Vista from his computer and reinstall Windows XP. He recently used nLite to create an unattended Windows XP Pro installation CD and proceeded to perform the install.

Toward the beginning of the installation, he received the error "Setup cannot copy the file cmnicfg.xml", If he skipped the file and continued, he would get a copy error with the following files:

Setup cannot copy the file ipcfg.xml
Setup cannot copy the file osinfo.xml
Setup cannot copy the file potscfg.xml
Setup cannot copy the file pppcfg.xml
Setup cannot copy the file trustmon.dll
Setup cannot copy the file trustmon.mof
Setup cannot copy the file twcli32.msi
Setup cannot copy the file dwil1033.dll
After having skipped the files and then continuing to the setup
phase, immediately upon starting he would get the following errors:

Fatal Error: internal setup data structures are corrupted
SAM initialization failed because of the following
error. Directory service cannot start 0xC00002e1

At first, we thought maybe he had a corrupted CD or a bad burn. However, after looking into the situation further, it appears that the fully automated or unattended install settings were causing the errors.

As it turned out, the problem was that the Automated Windows XP Installation disk was not prompting to format the partition, therefore, the installation was trying to access a directory that it did not have permission to access causing the file copy failures.

Fixing the Setup cannot copy the file cmnicfg.xml errors:
You could use a Windows XP installation CD that is not setup for Unattended Installation

Or you can do this:

Download the Gparted ISO and burn it to a CD
Restart your computer, booting from the Gparted CD
Use Gparted to delete, create and format your partition
Restart your computer from the Windows Installation disk and proceed to install Windows XP

We will be using nLite to create a remastered Windows XP Pro installation disk with integrated SATA drivers. You must also have a backup USB flash drive or hard drive handy to store essential system and network drivers that need to be installed to gain access to the internet for the remainder of the driver downloads. I've personally tested this tutorial by successfully installing Windows XP Pro to a HP DV9030US notebook.

Offline Files - The Offline Files service performs maintenance activities on the Offline Files cache. Uncheck to disable.

Terminal Services - Allows users to connect interactively to a remote computer. Remote Desktop and Terminal Server depend on this service. If you don’t use either of these, then you can disable the service. Uncheck to disable.

Windows Error Reporting Service - Allows errors to be reported when programs stop working or responding and allows existing solutions to be delivered. Uncheck to disable.

After you are finished, click Apply then click OK to save changes.
