Out of the three towns that create the corners of the Silver Triangle in the San Juan Mountains, Telluride is probably the most known. The reason it is most known is also why it is my least favorite and why I end up dealing with it the most. Late in the 1960’s Telluride was about to blow away, because there was no work the cost of living was very low and because it was just flat out beautiful many of the hippie types found that this would make a fine home. The contrast of the hippies and the old miner types created an interesting climate in town, but it seemed all wanted the town to survive.

But what to do?

Though the Idarado Mine was still in operation it was the only deal in town, the economy needed a boost. The town needed its niche to survive but what would it be. The Town of Silverton became a tourist attraction with the renewing of the narrow gauge railroad and Ouray was fast becoming know as the Jeep Capitol of the World, but what for Telluride.

How about a ski area I am sure some of the hippies first thought.

But soon even the old timers saw the merits and soon pitched in to build the Telluride Ski Resort.

So now we have an old funky mining town full of miners and hippies but there is some thing about becoming a ski resort , it’s kind of like selling the towns soul.

The problam with prosperity is it brings in lots of folks with lots of money who allso love the area.

Fast forward to 2007, what happened to all the hippies and the old timers?

How come you can’t find a home in town for less then a million dollars?

That is my point, but don’t get me wrong, I spend many days a year in this town, and this a great area to base out of for adventures if you can afford to. In fact this town prides itself on its adventures spirit, its just expensive. As I always say, its a great place to work but I wouldn’t want to live there. But because I work for Dave of Dave’s Mountain Tours I rack up many adventures from this town and plan to share them with you all over time.

There are many hotels located in or around Telluride, some I highly recommend, most I don’t.

I plan to share my favorites with you but lets get started with the most famous.

The New Sheridan is the main focus of down town Telluride, and has been in biz for over 100 years.

Its has made Roger Mason a lot of money as his favorite subject in his oil paintings.

The New Sheridan is just a cool establishment, 100 year old ambiance and service that is second to none.
