Careerbuilder, Monster etc… That same day I get a call from a recruiter from one of the IT staffing companies in town, checking to see if I’m available for a contract (temporary) computer support job. I won’t find out if I even have a chance to interview till next week, but it was kind of cool to get called like that.

A real corporate type interview; You know when the last time I had to do that was? A long, long, long time ago. This will be the test, if I can get an interview, a job and still do 12 credits (4 classes) in my voluminous spare time. It’s not like I’m done dealing with the truck either, I still have to do something with it. Now that the camshaft is fixed, I need to get the generator fixed. It will be nice when I’m out to have the microwave working again. Put it in the shop next week while family is in town and I’m not going anywhere anyway.

I’m now studying for my Network+ certification. I already paid for the test (at the 50% school discount), took the class the previous semester and trying to study and take it before the next semester starts on 6/08. Plus the recruiter said it would help if I had it. I feel like I’m cramming, but I’m not. I already went through the book and class once so this is just a review. Except I waited long enough that now the test has been updated. Networking is going back to my roots. I was into networking before there was an Internet. At least before it became popular. The concepts, terminology and even some of the equipment are the same (but updated), it’s like one big refresher course.

Since this might be (if I even get it) my first job interview for a tech position in a long time, I’m not holding my breath. If I don’t get it, it will be good practice and I still have enough school to keep me busy this summer.

I’m going to study in the mornings then go into the office for a half day or two to see how the freight biz is going. When we brought the truck back to the office, the parking lot had a lot of trucks in it. But most everyone likes to be home on the weekends so it wasn’t that unusual.

I know my “empire” is supposed to be supporting me by now, but I like the studying and I want to work. That may change once I get there, but for now that’s what I want and it seems to be working out that way. The empire will always be there and will be something to fall back on if I need it.

We delivered some furniture to Harrah’s casino in Biloxi, MS. Almost one year after Katrina and Biloxi looks like it happened yesterday. The coastline is still a disaster, but as you move inland the damage is less and less. About a half mile from the coast and you can’t tell anything happened. BTW, this isn’t Harrah’s, but here’s more pictures of fallen buildings and the coastline. It was a little spooky driving around town seeing only foundations in some places. A lot of people living in travel trailers next to their foundations while they rebuild and probably a lot of the construction workers living in trailers too.

I’ve been driving truck since Oct ’98. I’ve pulled a reefer (refrigerated trailer) and dry van and had to deal with the hassles that accompany hauling produce and boxed meat. Including lumpers, refrigerated warehouses, farms and the stink of meat plants. Now I haul Special Commodities also called pad wrap or blanket wrap freight. Things that require special handling. Electronics, new furniture, even personal household moves once in awhile, trade shows and the like. It’s still a hassle, just a different kind of hassle. But there are good parts to it too.

Before trucking I was a Network Technician and Computer Programmer.
Computers have always been a hobby from my first Commodore 64 computer. I started trucking after having a short term contract installing and
upgrading computers in nursing homes all across Kentucky and Tennessee.
Driving from place to place I noticed almost every truck had a ‘help
wanted’ sign on it. At the time I was going through my second divorce
and had already lost everything from the first one. Starting with
nothing, I borrowed the money for school and started driving.

Six years later, I’m only beginning to understand the trucking
business. Having my own authority and being completely independent is
something I’m not sure I’m going to do yet. At the moment, I’m (mostly)
happy with the people I’m leased to.

I met Cindy online and after many emails and phone calls our first date was pretty incredible and it keeps getting better all the time. I talked her into driving with me after her corporate cubicle was such a disappointment. Driving and sharing this job is like no other. I loved trucking before, but didn’t like doing the “tourist” things by myself. Having someone else in the truck and in such a small space, changes everything. It’s said, that couples that drive together either get closer or end up hating each other. We’re getting closer, but we still need a little alone time too.

I hate going east. It seems you’re already late before you get started. Since I was loaded late in Vegas, I missed the closing time in Denver and had to unload this morning. Drove 700 miles to Iowa. All legally, thanks to 75 mph speed limits in Colorado and Nebraska! I’ll deliver in Minneapolis then haul buns to Chicago for early Friday for two drops.

Cindy sounds pretty excited about starting school. It won’t be the same on the road without her. This week is busy and it’s paying okay, but it’s not great for all the LTL and extra stops I’ve got on. The problem has been it’s busy this week, but we sit for another three or four or more days waiting for something decent.

It’s late and thank goodness Cindy loaded me up with food! Even Willie is enjoying scrambled eggs that were leftover from last trip and a left over pork chop. We’re all eating good, going for walks at rest areas and taking lots of naps (at least Willie is) and we both miss our partner.

Go to Go Read Green and sign up for a free online magazine subscription from a list of 16 mainstream publications. You need a different email for each subscription, but how hard is that? You can download the magazine to take with you or browse online.

The magazine reader is from zinio.com and is an exact replica of the magazine. Waiting time for the magazine to load depends on your connection, but it’s not bad. There’s a zoom option to zoom in on the semi-tough to read print unless you zoom in on it. Zinio has just about every magazine in print you can get a regular online subscription.

The free subscription may be a limited time offer and I don’t know how much other stuff will get sent to your email, but depending on the magazine a real online subscription could cost up to $20 or $30 bucks.

Some of the magazines on the free trial include Men’s Journal, PC Magazine which will no longer be in print, Popular Science, US News and World Reports and several others.

We arrived at the Convention Center last night and checked in. After Wayne talked to a few other drivers we went to sleep while we still could awaiting the knock at the door saying its your time to load. That didn’t happen until the following morning at 7:00 am. So both of us had a good nights rest before our journey to San Diego. We looked around and a lot of the trucks were loaded and already on their way. After you are loaded you have 48 hours to arrive at the convention center in San Diego to check in. There are about 27 trucks involved in this run and this is our second time.

Last time was in September ’05 from San Diego to Orlando. This time we had a weekend in Lake Mary at my brother and sister-in-laws home with lots of visiting about their recent trip to South Africa to visit their daughters and grandchildren for Christmas. This job sure has its perks as we get to visit with them at least twice a year. We should be on our way in an hour or so and will try to write on the road.

Holy Cow! Is it hot and humid in Houston! We woke up this morning and took Willie for walk and it was like walking through a steam room.

Everything we’ve read says Willie’s separation anxiety doesn’t get better with time. Our load that was going to keep us moving, canceled. We are probably here for at least the weekend. Whatever his problem is may not be from separation, since he goes nuts even when one of us is sitting right next to him. Then he started going nuts when we were visiting a friend’s house and one of them went outside for a minute. It may be more of a dominance thing and not due to separation or fear of being left alone.

We have probably not been successful in instilling in his little self, that we’re the boss, not him. The Dog Whisperer says, dogs need excerise, discipline and love. We are starting over with that.

Walk, Walk, Walk.

We woke up this morning and went for a walk. Even before the walk I tried to keep him in a calm and submissive state (yeah, right!). I made him sit and be calm before I opened the door. He usually starts going nuts when the door is opened, so I hurried and picked him up and got out of the truck before he started his fit.

We are walking the dog, the dog isn’t walking us.

We kept him on a short leash and tried to keep him beside us. Behind us wasn’t really working, but anytime he got too far in front he got a little jerk. He goes nuts around other dogs and birds. He was straining so hard and getting into the “Red Zone”, I picked him up, got face to face and yelled, “No!” Put him down and he was okay. Not perfect, but okay.

Wear ‘em down

Toward the end of the walk, he was doing great! Walking right next to us, no straining or anything, just walking. We got to the truck. He sat while I opened the door and got in. I stood outside while he stared at me from the floor of the truck, nice and calm. Usually, he’s throwing a fit before we close the door. I should have got in at that moment, but I needed to put a lock on the trailer.

Not quite there
