Last night while visiting at my brother and sister-in-laws home I watched the show " The Great American Race" I think some of us are in a race of one kind or another. I know with trucking
Wayne and I feel that we are racing against time with leaving LA on Friday evening and needing to be in Virginia Monday morning. Stopping is limited to bathroom breaks and sleep. Not much sleep or we would never be on time. Then there’s the directions to the next stop, one person gave us directions not by street names but by the local bars. What a mess that was but we did find it. He told us to call him if we got lost on our way out of town. Wayne and I looked at each other and smiled, both thinking " WHATEVER!!!" Nice guy but may want to
look at the street signs in his town.

I know when my children were young and I was working
full time. It was a race to get them up and going in the morning and then to work, run errands
at lunch time and race home in the afternoons to cook dinner and get to soccer, baseball, football or whatever other sport was going on. Yesterday was an exception to the normal race in life for me. Wayne and I slept in and then treated ourselves to the "Kennedy Space Center" and then a wonderful meal at the "Cheesecake Factory" with my bother and sister-in-law. It was so great not be in a hurry and just enjoy the day and the company.

Updates on our Flickr pictures and Youtube videos. I can even add Del.icio.us and Stumble bookmarks and many more. That’s a lot of stuff being shared and it fills up your page with everything your doing. That might be a little too much information. Moderation is probably best in this case.

If you want to follow Adventures in Trucking, you follow the blog. If you want to check my new pictures on Flickr, you follow me on Flickr. If you want to see my bookmarks I’m adding, you can follow my Del.icio.us and Stumbles. Facebook has a Twitter like interface too so you can tell everyone what you’re having for lunch. You can also share your Google Reader shareable feeds, our Youtube videos, last.fm (which I don’t have yet, but it looks interesting) and many more. I may put a few things on there, but it won’t be information overload about my day.

I’ve spent a lot of time searching for an option I wanted to update or looking for an application and being unable to find it. I suppose I’ll learn where stuff is eventually, but will stop updating so much soon and I’ll just log on, see what everyone else is doing, check out any new pictures, then go on with my day. Or I can just check all of the email updates.

Pronounced Cool, Cuil.com is a new search engine started by some ex-Google employees. Cuil indexes three times more of the web than google and search results are presented differently than what everyone is used to. Google needs some competition. What about Yahoo and MSN Live? Google needs some competition. The reason google dominates the search engine war is the frequency and the amount of updates it goes after compared to Yahoo and MSN. Google sends tons more web indexing robots all over the internet than Yahoo or MSN and is the main reason it dominates because their search results are the most relevant and timely The buyout of Yahoo by Microsoft might help make Yahoo and MSN more competitive by allowing them to combine forces and resources.

For now Cuil indexes 120 billion pages which is three times more than google has indexed. Google’s response is that the web it doesn’t index is either irrelevant or spam. The Google ex-employees were the ones that developed TeraGoogle which is a system developed to index a large number of documents and the other major employee that moved to Cuil worked on web ranking and spam detection. A search engine with more information and the ability to rank it and weed out spam sites, that could be real competition for google.

At the moment, they are having the normal start up problems and I’m sure they are busy tweaking their algorithms, because some of the search results being reported, let’s just say, need a little tweaking in order to be competitive.

I may not completely switch but I’m trying it out and it does need some adjusting to get what I think are more relevant results. You get a lot more information about a site without actually going to it. Definitely worth checking out. Cuil.com

The coastline is still a disaster, but as you move inland the damage is less and less. About a half mile from the coast and you can’t tell anything happened. BTW, this isn’t Harrah’s, but here’s more pictures of fallen buildings and the coastline. It was a little spooky driving around town seeing only foundations in some places. A lot of people living in travel trailers next to their foundations while they rebuild and probably a lot of the construction workers living in trailers too.

We arrived in Reno, NV Monday afternoon to pick-up a load Tuesday morning and begin our trip to Atlantic City, NJ. A few things have changed since then and so far all for the good. We
are still in Reno waiting for the trailer to finish being loaded so we had some fun last night and went to Downtown Reno for dinner. I requested Pizza since I can’t prepare that meal in the truck and Wayne agreed. After dinner, I put two dollars in a slot machine and won $10 dollars so I took Wayne out for ice cream. We walked a little and saw some of the lights in Reno. It was a very nice evening. Now to top that all off, we are going to Connecticut with a RETURN LOAD waiting at the same location we are delivering. So we will be home in Las Vegas for Christmas. Does it get any BETTER!!!

From Fort Worth to Las Vegas we encountered high winds and dust storms on our way back home. We finished loading late Friday nite and I was to start driving Saturday morning to Las Vegas. It was so windy I had both hands on the wheel with a tight grip when about 200 miles into our trip I saw the top of the trailer flopping in the wind and holding on by inches to the passenger side. I yelled ” Wayne” about 3 times as he was resting in the back and spotted a sign that said rest area 1 mile. I decided that I could make it there. Wayne was speechless as he saw what I was yelling about. The roof had ripped off the trailer over the Texas panhandle probably in many small pieces but the a large piece was still hanging on. I heard one trucker over the CB describe it as a large sailboat going down the freeway.

As funny as that sounded we were in a serious situation. The cargo was fine and we were able to pull off the remaining large piece about 12 feet long. The front 1/3 of the trailer was still intacted but around the middle the fiberglass ceiling had ripped off the trailer. Wayne secured what he could and we headed for Las Vegas before any rain could hit. We arrived about 2:30 am Sunday morning and unloaded later so all the freight was undamaged.

Wayne will take the trailer to Fontana, California for a new roof. We will be on vacation until our trailer is ready again. If it takes too long we will probably rent another trailer for a short period. This is one adventure I hope never happens again and will be a story to tell for a lifetime.

In fact the driver ahead of us was also putting his chains on while posing at the same time. Wayne and I had a good laugh as we pulled up BEHIND this driver. Today we will drop all three loads we picked up from Phoenix and Albuquerque and be ready for a new trip. I will put my two cents in to our travel agent (dispatcher) about how I love the sun and warm weather they tend to have more of in the South. I am requesting an Orlando trip for Valentines Day to visit with friends and family, hope cupid is listening.

Wayne’s update: Here’s crack and no crack while putting chains on. And notice who is inside taking pictures and who’s outside throwing chains on.
