Washing regular clothes is a straightforward task. You throw them in the washing machine, add detergent, select the setting, and off you go.

If you’re new to skiing and snowboarding, you might wonder how to wash ski gear. Is it like doing everyday laundry?

Before learning the best way to wash snow gear, I rarely washed my ski jacket or pants, only my base layers, and sweaters, as I knew they could go in with regular clothes.

However, now I’m in the camp that it is essential to wash ski gear after each trip to the mountains.

Keep reading to learn the methods I use to wash my ski gear.

How to wash your snow jacket?

Washing your ski jacket the right way is critical to ensure it lasts many years, not only one season.

Start by removing any removable inserts or liners, then check the brand label for the specific washing instructions.

If there aren’t any, it’s best to wash it on a low-temperature and gentle setting, which is the standard for all washing machines in the United States.

Make sure to close all zippers before throwing the jacket into the wash, as this will reduce sharp edges from snagging on other items in the wash. It will also reduce the chance of it having water in the pockets when the cycle finishes.

After your jacket has gone through its wash cycle, dry it either hung up or laid flat in an area away from direct heat to prevent shrinking and distortion of fabric design.

For tough stains, we recommend spot-treating them with mild detergent and cold water before putting it in the washing machine with your other gear.

How to wash your ski pants?

Washing your ski pants is very similar to the steps outlined above when instructing you how to wash your snow jacket.

You can wash ski pants separately from other items like your jacket, but you can also wash them together. As with the coat, please do not wash them in hot water or put them in the dryer since excess heat may damage the fabric of ski pants.

We also recommended washing ski pants with an appropriate detergent, especially for technical fabrics, so they keep their waterproofing properties intact while reducing the chance of staining or fading.

Again, make sure to zip up all pockets before placing them in the wash, as it’s happened to me before that water has accumulated in the pickets.

Then, once your wash cycle is complete, unzip all zippers before or after hanging your ski pants so they can air dry quickly.

These simple steps will ensure that your ski pants will still be in top condition once it’s time to hit the slopes again!

How to wash waterproof fabrics?

When deciding how to wash waterproof fabrics such as ski gear, the correct technique is essential in preserving its properties. Waterproof gear is expensive, so you don’t want to ruin them after spending a lot of money.

Firstly, wash with a mild detergent designed explicitly for waterproof materials and wash in cold or lukewarm water. Hot water could damage the garment.

Make sure you select a gentle cycle, and we even recommend turning the clothes inside out, not to damage any connectors or fastenings of the product.

Once the wash finishes, lay it out on a clothes horse or hang them on hangers and place them outside to dry naturally.

Do not use highly abrasive cleaners, and avoid tumble dryers, if possible, as they can cause permanent damage to the fabric and its waterproof properties.

If you fear that you’ve incorrectly washed your waterproof gear in the past, then you can apply a waterproof protector once dry as reinforcement.

How to wash a fleece sweater?

Fleece sweaters go through a lot so washing them correctly is essential. They are vital for warmth in the colder months and can be worn as the main outer layer once it warms up.

To start, wash the garment in cold or lukewarm water on a delicate wash cycle with mild detergent meant for delicates. Remove the garment from the washer and lay it flat on a towel to dry.

Allowing the sweater to air dry will help prevent it from shrinking more than necessary and maintain its original shape. It’s best to put it in a dryer only if the clothing label claims you can.

After drying your fleece sweater, fluff it up with your hands or a brush to restore it to its original softness. I rarely do this last step, but my girlfriend does it with her fleece sweaters.

Washing Items Made With Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex is one of the most popular fabrics for snow gear. If any of your gear is made with Gore-Tex, there are specific instructions to ensure you wash them correctly.

With Gore-Tex, it’s important to wash the fabric delicately using a special detergent, as we mentioned when discussing how to clean waterproof materials.

Do not scrub or brush Gore-Tex items, as it could damage the material. Wash on a gentle cycle and at a low temperature too.

After washing, it t best to hang dry the Gore-Tex clothing and avoid machine drying as it can degrade the fabric’s performance over time.

Don’t use fabric softeners. You don’t need to smell as fresh as a daisy on the mountains, and definitely don’t use bleach! These can negatively affect snow gear that uses highly resistant Gore-Tex materials in its build.

I own a pair of Gore-Tex ski gloves and only washed them at the end of the first season that I had them. The truth is that I was scared to ruin them by washing them, so I put off doing it. However, I used the steps mentioned above, and they came out fine!

Don’t be a filthy animal like me if your gloves need a wash sooner!

How to dry snow gear after you’ve washed it?

We’ve already said that we like to hang dry all of our snow gear once it’s clean. This is easy at home as we can hang our ski pants up by the suspenders, hang the coat with a hanger, and then do up the zip.

But, if we’re away and something needs cleaning urgently, we’ll do so wherever we’re staying and use a dryer as a last resort.

This is why taking a spare pair of ski pants is a good idea. Some people will even take an extra jacket with them, depending on the length of their trip. You never know what’s going to happen, so why not.

Hang or lay items flat in a well-ventilated area for an hour or two to help them dry faster.

If items are still wet, place them in the dryer on a low setting with a few towels and regularly check until fully dry. Snow pants and ski gloves should be turned inside out before drying, then hung up alongside jackets, so air circulates freely inside them.

To avoid damaging waterproof breathable shell fabric, opt for natural drying instead of using a dryer whenever possible.

In Summary

As you’ve seen, washing expensive ski and snowboard gear differs from washing regular clothes.

Outer snow gear is made with waterproof material, so you’ll need to buy a detergent for this type of material. We also advise you to wash your ski jacket and pants at a low temperature and a gentle setting to avoid damaging the items.

If you want to be cautious, washing them separately is also a good idea.

We like to wait to wash ski gear on a nice day so it will dry quickly. But this is only sometimes possible, especially in winter.

On bad weather days, dry them outside in an area protected from rain, snow, and other brutal elements. Otherwise, the last resort is to use a dryer, but ensure the temperature and spin setting are on the lowest option.

What happened to Roffe Ski Wear? That’s what we’re going to look at today in this article. Roffe was a famous ski brand everyone wanted to wear on the slopes.

Sam Roffe founded the company in 1953, and two years after his death in 1994, his family sold the business to Gerry Sportswear Co.

With high-quality fabrics, waterproof protection, and a vast range of sizes for every item, Roffe vintage ski wear offers a chic look in a day and age when designs are all quite similar.

Keep reading to learn more about the Roffe brand and where you can pick up old gear from this brand that no longer manufactures ski gear.

What happened to Roffe Ski Wear?

Roffe Ski Wear was once a well-known global skiwear brand, but it has since disappeared. Though the company originated in the United States in 1953, it quickly went global and became an international favorite for its unique designs and state-of-the-art stitching techniques. Within only seven years, in 1960, it was already the official brand for the outfits for the 1960 U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team.

Roffe Ski Wear eventually ceased operations after the family sold the business to Gerry Sportswear Co. in 1996. Sadly, this was two years after the death of founder Sam Roffe.

Gerry Sportswear Co. made many redundancies immediately in its North American operations. They then employed cheaper staff in Asian countries to lower production costs.

While many have fond memories of wearing Roffe ski wear out on the slopes, others might only remember seeing its tagged parkas in movies and television. Either way, Roffe Ski Wear lives on as its products remain cherished by people worldwide, especially those who love vintage ski gear.

<img decoding="async" srcset="https://www.adventureskier.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/roffe-ski-wear-old-advertisement.jpeg " src="https://www.adventureskier.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/roffe-ski-wear-old-advertisement.jpeg" alt="Old Roffe Ski Wear advertisement with a man and woman in ski gear.
Sam Roffe – Founder of Roffe Skiwear

The crazy thing about Sam Roffe was that he never skied himself. That’s according to the New York Times, which wrote this article after his death in 1994. However, that didn’t stop him from creating one of the most popular ski brands from the 1950s to 1990s.

Roffe’s love was actually for thoroughbred horse racing, not skiing. After leaving Seattle Woolens company, where he had worked for 22 years, he created businesses in two very different sectors.

He was 44 when he launched Roffe Skiwear in 1953 without ever skiing. What he did have, though, was a vision and a love for quality-made products. It wasn’t until three years after starting his business that he began to manufacture ski wear.

As reported in the Seattle Times, he came into manufacturing ski wear when the manager of the University Bookstore asked him to create a pair of stretch ski pants to sell in the store. Back then, they were all made in Europe, which made importing them expensive.

This led to him going a step beyond to start manufacturing ski jackets such as parkas and, eventually, full ski uniforms.

He continued to be involved directly on the factory floor and running the business. Roffe Inc. even acquired Demetre Sweaters in 1987.

Does Roffe Ski Wear still manufacture

Unfortunately, Roffe Ski Wear is no longer manufacturing its famous ski clothing. But you can buy second-hand wear on the auction website ebay.com.

Here are some examples of second-hand Roffe gear you can find online.

Vintage Roffe Ski Wear

We just mentioned that the brand is no longer manufacturing, so you’ll have to buy a vintage piece of Roffe ski wear to get your hands on it.

As the company dates back to the 1950s, you can find a selection of styles, especially from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Some places to look for these classic items are thrift shops and ski/snowboard shops, but mainly at online auction websites like eBay.

Don’t miss out on your chance to make a real statement on the slopes with a piece of vintage Roffe ski wear!

When I started to learn how to ski, I didn’t question the length of the skis I rented. But this all changed when I learned more about the difference between shorts and long skis.

In short, long skis offer more stability even though you’ll need more power to get up speed compared to short skis. Long skis are generally 200 cm or more in length. These are best for beginners due to the extra stability. Short skis don’t offer this same stability, but they allow you to make quicker, sharper turns. However, they are slower than long skis over distance, but they make you more agile when turning.

Difference between short skis and long skis

Short skis and long skis differ primarily in their length. Short skis, for instance, range between 110-165 cm and are usually used by experts for sharp turns.

Long skis can extend to 180 cm or more and are typically used for alpine touring or backcountry skiing, as they are better suited to gliding on powdery snow.

Ultimately, the type of ski to use depends on the terrain and your skiing level. Short skis are best in tight trees, while long skis are better when carving up wide-open slopes.

What are the pros of short skis?

Short skis offer the advantage of improved maneuverability on tighter terrain and more control in fast turns. Skiers prefer short skis because they can swiftly turn and execute quick maneuvers, especially when skiing moguls.

Short skis provide increased agility with less movement due to faster acceleration and deceleration. Short skis make it easier to vary your speed while staying in control. You can move quickly over short sections between trees or other obstacles, making skiing more enjoyable and exciting!

Make faster turns

Great for mogul skiing

Cons of short skis

With that said, we don’t advise some people to use short skis, especially beginners. Some drawbacks to short skis are that they’re less stable than long skis and can be more challenging to control in harsh weather conditions or on rougher terrain.

Also, short skis lack the power and performance of longer skis on steeper slopes, making them less ideal for aggressive or advanced skiing styles.

Lastly, short skis also tend to have a short effective edge, providing less grip when carving turns at higher speeds. Although short skis offer excellent mobility and are more user-friendly than longer, heavier models, prospective buyers should consider these cons before investing in an expensive pair of skis.

Less stability

Not good for beginners

Pros of Long Skis

Long skis can offer several advantages for ski enthusiasts over short skis. Longer-length skis allow the skier to have greater control over their speed. They can effectively navigate turns while providing the necessary support to prevent them from going too quickly.

Additionally, long skis provide increased stability when skiing on uneven or poor terrain, making it easier and safer for them to ski various slopes.

Long skis also provide extra cushioning and dampening, which reduces the impact felt when taking more brutal hits on more rugged terrain.

Offer increased stability

Increased control

Great for people new to skiing

Cons of Long Skis

Long skis also have some cons, though. Longer skis make it more difficult for quick body movements, such as leaning over or breaching hips higher due to the extra length of the ski. This can result in diminished agility and a less pleasant ride when trying to weave through tricky terrain.

Additionally, long skis are less forgiving than short ones when coming up against objects, stumps, and rocks, which is likely to occur during backcountry excursions.

Lastly, long skis can be more challenging to maneuver while skiing at low angles because the extra length creates additional drag, which can make finding speed on gentle slopes much harder than on shorter skis.

Movements are more labored

Slower turns

Ski Size

Now you’ve learned about the difference between long and short skis, you can select what size skis are best for you.

As mentioned, if you’re new to skiing, we suggest longer skis as they offer more stability.

Choosing the right ski size can be tricky, as ski sizes are indicated in centimeters and only sometimes reflect your actual height.

You must consider ski type, skiing level, weight, and ski length to pick the perfect ski size.

Type of ski (all-mountain or powder ski) should match the surface you will ski on most.

Your skiing level (beginner or advanced) will also determine your ski size. A more aggressive skier may want a shorter ski for quick turns on groomers. More casual skiers will benefit from a longer ski for better stability and floatability in deeper snow conditions.

Your weight and length of skis should be considered when you buy new skis.

As a rule of thumb: Heavier skiers require longer skis; lighter skiers can get away with shorter ones. With the above factors in mind, you can make an informed decision when picking the perfect pair of skis!

As we’ve made clear, beginners should always go with long skis. Then, more advanced skiers can use short or long skis depending on the skiing they’ll be doing that day.

Calculate Your Perfect Ski Size

Keep reading to find out what’s made our list.

Best Ski Resorts for Powder in the USA

Snowbird/Alta, Utah

Snowbird/Alta in Utah is renowned for its deep powder and challenging terrain. With more than 500 inches of snow each year, it’s no wonder that Alta is considered one of the best powder skiing locations in the world.

With runs like Rim Run and High Rustler, skiers can find plenty of challenges to keep them coming back for more.

Mount Baker, Washington

Mount Baker is up there with Snowbird/Alta as one of the best powder ski resorts in the USA. It is located on the west coast of Washington state, about a two-hour drive from Seattle.

On average the ski area receives more than 700 inches of snow each year, making it one of the snowiest places in North America. Mount Baker offers a variety of activities, including alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and sledding. Although, you’ll probably only be interested in getting out on the fresh powder!

Wolf Creek, Colorado

Wolf Creek is one of the best ski resorts in all of Colorado and this is down to the fact it’s got some of the best snow in the country.

Wolf Creek receives an average of 442 inches of snow each year, more than any other resort in the state. The snow is so deep and fluffy which makes it a favorite among powder hounds. It’s even good for skiers of all levels as beginners can enjoy the wide-open groomed runs, while advanced skiers can explore the resort’s many chutes and glades.

Steamboat, Colorado

Steamboat Springs is a world-famous ski resort in Colorado. It’s known for its trademarked “champagne powder” snow which is light and fluffy, and perfect for skiing or snowboarding. This is obviously a marketing ploy mainly, but the snow does have an extremely low level of water at only 6%!

Steamboat has over 150 trails, and is a great place for both beginner and advanced skiers. The resort also has a lot of other activities, like snowshoeing, dog sledding, and ice skating.

We have a dedicated article on What is Champagne Powder, so be sure to check that out if you want to learn more.

Vail, Colorado

Time for another resort in Colorado and we couldn’t miss Vail from this list of the best power ski resorts. It is situated in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado covering a huge area of 5,289 acres with 193 trails.

Vail first opened its doors in 1962 and has since become a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. The resort is also home to many events and competitions, including the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships and the Vail Winter Dew Tour.

Unless you’re a Coloradan, coming to Vail might be a once-in-a-lifetime ski trip that you take and one that is totally worth it. It offers luxury hotels and upscale restaurants so make sure you’ve got a good budget.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole is another top choice for powder skiing. With an average annual snowfall of 450 inches and great terrain for serious skiers, it’s no wonder that Jackson Hole in Wyoming consistently ranks among the best ski resorts in the United States.

It also made our list of the best places to ski in November in the USA.

Crystal Mountain, Washington

Lech is a ski resort in Austria that is famous for its powder snow. It didn’t make our list of where to ski in October like other Austrian resorts, but once it starts snowing you’ll find that it’s one of the best powder ski resorts in Europe.

Its elevation is over 1,450 meters above sea level and has a population of approximately 1,700 people. This obviously gets busier during the peak months when snowboarders and skiers from all over the world come to visit.

Champagne powder is a type of snow that is often associated with skiing in Colorado, more specifically powder snow at the Steamboat Resort in the state.

The story of where the term champagne powder comes from dates back to the early 1950s and is explained on the Steamboat website as follows:

“The phrase was coined in the early 1950s by local rancher Joe McElroy, who was out skiing on terrain that eventually would become the ski area and said the snow tickled his nose like champagne.”

“Steamboat’s unique snow averages 6 percent water content. Compare that to the 15 percent water content more typical at other locations. No other ski resort has its snow trademarked, and there’s no other place you’ll find Champagne Powder® snow than in Steamboat.”

Basically, this type of snow is ideal for skiing, as it is some of the best powder snow that you’ll find in the United States. It often only falls in high-altitude areas such as the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

Here’s a video from Steamboat Resorts themselves explaining what champagne powder is, how it is created and how it differs from powder at other resorts.

Why do they call it champagne powder?

As you’ve seen above, champagne powder got its name due to John McElroy describing the feeling of the snow tickling his nose like champagne does when you drink it.

As champagne light and seen as being an expensive, luxury drink people have come to think of champagne powder of being luxurious. Well, I guess it is in a sense as it’s what every skier and snowboarder wants to experience when they hit the slopes.

Is Champagne Powder a trademark?

Yes, champagne powder is indeed a trademark owned by:

Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation CORPORATION DELAWARE 2305 Mt. Werner Circle Steamboat COLORADO 80487

As you can see below, it was filed for in 2008 and officially registered in 2010. There were older trademarks for the same term, that were also owned by the same company, but these are no longer active, only the one in the screenshot below is.

Whilst it has been trademarked by the owners of Steamboat Ski Resort, the term has become synonymous with high-quality powder snow. But, other resorts can’t use it in advertising due to the fact they’ve trademarked the term, but that doesn’t stop skiers and snowboarders from calling great snow champagne powder.

How do you ski champagne powder snow?

How do you ski champagne powder snow is basically the same question as how do you ski powder snow. Linking your turns together is the main aim and that’s what will give you the confidence to go at it hard.

If you’re a beginner and haven’t experienced powder snow before, then you’ll want to make sure you’re the first on the ski lift after a night of snowfall. This is because you want to see how the powder feels on snow that hasn’t been skied on before. Make sure you get into a good rhythm, planting your pole well can help with this.

You shouldn’t be skiing powder off-piste if you’re a beginner so try it on a slope that you’re comfortable with first. This might mean waking up earlier or rushing breakfast, but it’s definitely worth it!

Here’s a video from Ski School by Elate Media that can help those that like to learn in a visual way.

Skiing in November for me is the start of the season. I know that this isn’t the same for everyone, but personally, I like to go the week before Thanksgiving at the end of November. However, it is important to choose the right location so that’s what we’re going to discuss in this article.

Some ski resorts open as early as September or October, but others may not open until December. Whilst some ski resorts in the USA do open in October, even more of them open their doors in November.

When choosing a ski resort, be sure to check the weather forecast and snowfall predictions as where to ski in November can change from year to year. This is a long list so strap yourselves in!

Austria

Obertauern

Austria is one of the best countries for skiing in October and it gets even better in the month of November. Obertauern is a popular ski resort that attracts visitors from all over Europe as well as Americans and many other nationalities.

The ski conditions are excellent, and the scenery is breathtaking. November is an ideal time to visit Obertauern because it’s not as busy and prices are lower than usual. If you’re looking for a ski destination that offers great value for money, Obertauern is one resort to check out.

St Anton am Arlberg

St Anton am Arlberg is another Austrian ski resort that is open in November, although the main rush of people won’t arrive until December. Of course, this is all dependent on how much snowfall there is at the start of the month if there isn’t enough it won’t open until early December.

It’s known to be great for a lively apres ski, so if that’s what you’re after as well as fresh snow then it’s a top location.

North America

Sugarloaf, Maine

These shorts come with protective butt and hip pads to give you the utmost protection. This company uses Eva foam for perfect quality and strong force absorption.

What makes these shorts unique is their “Dual-density padded Foam” feature that ensures your safety.

Also, these pads can be moved by you and put in the areas that need more protection. Moreover, you can decide the thickness of the pads to suit you and your activity.

The manufacturing company took the best decision when they added the “ Max-Dri moisture” feature. Thanks to this, you can wear shorts for long periods as they keep you always comfortable, regulates airflow, prevents irritation and bad odor.

Pros

They have minimum space between pads to decrease the risk of injuries

Pads are easily removed and replaced according to your needs

They are durable and don’t wear off easily

Thickness of pads can be customized

Ok, so these impact shorts from Shock Doctor aren’t specifically for wearing when skiing or snowboarding. However, they work just as well as the other products in the list. If you play hockey as well as hit the slopes in the winter, then why not get 1 pair of impact protection shorts for both!

One of the most remarkable features is the shock-skin fabric as they have integrated foam pads in the whole design to promise you complete protection. You don’t need to worry about the pads moving through intense movements as they are tight together and secured.

The “Ultra Carbon Flex Cup” is included too in case you do want to use them for hockey or other contact sports.

Pros

This particular short comes with the best Eva padding qualities. It comes with soft padding that is 0.6 inches thick to guard the hip, butt, and thigh. Moreover, the Eva pads here are non-deformer which provide strong resistance to wear and tear.

Using the breathable mesh fabric absorbs moisture to keep you cool and at the same time, it prevents bacterial growth.

The short comes with an adjustable padded waist which makes it supportive and firm. Also, it is suitable for children and adults because the waist sizes range from 18 to 40 inches.

Pros

Provides protection to the lumbar, crotch, butt and thigh.

It can be worn inside or outside your regular pants, thanks to its light material.

Keeps you cool and odorless

Cons

Their size chart is not accurate.

They don’t have a return policy.

Choosing the Best Impact Shorts for your Favorite Sport

When it comes to your safety and protection, you should choose the best products with the best features. In this part, we’ll give you all the needed information to make the best purchase.

Pad Material and Thickness

Most impact shorts are either made of soft foam, hard plastic or a combination of both.

Soft foams particularly the Eva ones that have numerous benefits as:

High durability, resistance

They can stand severe stress and hits without cracking

UV- resistant

Being soft, light and comfortable

Provides high protection against the strongest falls

There are also different types of pads:

Thick Eva pads

The normal thickness of pads is usually 2 cm, however, some shorts have thicker pads. Such thickness guarantees excellent protection.

3D Eva Pads

The majority of impact shorts have pads that cover but, lumbar, thighs, and legs. What makes the 3D special is their added protection for the side of legs and hips.

Removable vs. Stable Pads

Removable pads have three important benefits that make them a better option than the stable ones.

They ease the cleaning process because you remove them and put the shorts with the laundry. So no need to follow instructions

If the pads became worn out, you can change them without the need to buy other shorts

They can be reallocated to protect areas that are more prone to injuries

Mesh Fabric and its Important Features

It’s a vital feature in your impact shorts to be breathable and light to avoid irritation, sweat accumulation, bad odor, and infection. So a good quality product would have Mesh fabric as it will allow airflow which prevents all the previous side effects.

Drawstring vs. Velcro Design

Choosing a closure design varies according to your needs and preferences. However, we recommend the drawstring option as it’s easily adjustable and has a longer life shelf.

The velcro design can’t be adjustable in an easy way and it wears off faster.

Size of the Impact Shorts

It’s important to choose the right size of shorts because if they are tight, you won’t feel comfortable and may cause irritation. On the other hand, if they are loose, they may shift.

So it’s mandatory to know your size before you buy one. We do recommend using the size charts available on each product to know your best fit.

How to Choose the Perfect Size?

As we mentioned before, choosing the right size is critical when buying impact shorts. You need to feel comfortable, light and secure so you need to choose a perfect match.

To know your size:

Stand up and be in a straight posture

Twist the measuring tape all the way around your waist

Read the tape

Double-check your results

Choose accordingly from the online size chart

To Wrap Up

Is It Still Hard to Make a Decision? The previous products will all be good options as they have the most important features for your comfort and safety.

However, our top pick will be the Tortoise pads T2 shorts because they have the best safety features with the required comfort that will make you move easily. It’s highly recommended by athletes.

But, if you’re on a budget, then you should go for the Bodypronx 3D protection shorts. As mentioned before these particular shorts are very light, not bulky, and do great work when it comes to protection.

There are more places to ski in October when compared to where to ski in September. That said, the majority of ski resorts in the United States don’t open until November.

As the fall season starts, the skiing conditions in most parts of the world become slowly become more favorable. This makes skiing in October possible if you’re in the USA and definitely possible in Europe.

So if you’re itching to get your ski and snowboard gear out early, keep reading about the best places to ski in October.

Austria

Sölden Glacier

Austria is one of the best countries for skiing in October and one of the resorts that we recommend is Sölden Glacier. With its high altitude and glaciated terrain, Sölden offers some of the best skiing conditions in the Alps.

The ski season usually starts in mid-October, but for those that want to go earlier, it is possible too. This gives skiers plenty of time to enjoy the stunning scenery and challenging runs. Sölden gives a chance available to beginner and experienced skiers.

Hintertux Glacier

Hintertux Glacier in Austria is a bit off the beaten path, but that’s what makes it a good place to ski because of its high altitude. In fact, Hintertux is one of the ski resorts along with Zermatt in Switzerland that stays open all year round, making it a great destination for skiing in October.

The glacier is situated at the far end of the valley and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. There are a variety of ski runs to choose from, so you’ll find something to suit your level. Going out of season also allows you to get in some practice before the crowds of people.

There are other activities on offer here too. You can hike, ice-skate, or simply take in the scenery. Hintertux offers a unique ski experience that should be added to your list.

Kitzsteinhorn

Kitzsteinhorn is another resort in Austria that has snowfall in October. It is located in the Central Eastern Alps and is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe. It is because of this that there is plenty of snow to ski and snowboard even in late autumn.

As a result, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery and perfect skiing conditions well into October. And for those who don’t ski, Kitzsteinhorn also offers hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities although this time of year you’ll start to need warmer clothes.

Italy

Passo Stelvio

October is a great month for skiing in Passo Stelvio as the snow is fresh and the slopes are empty. The scenery is breathtaking, with the Alps in the background and it is one of the cheaper options compared to the other resorts on this list.

The ski resort is located in a beautiful valley, surrounded by mountains. There are lifts to take you to the top of the mountain and there are also ski schools for beginners. The ski resort has something for everyone so if you want to enjoy Italian food and wine whilst skiing then it’s a great option for an early snow trip.

Val Senales

Italy’s Val Senales ski resort is one of the few places in Europe where you can ski in October. The ski season here typically runs from November to April, but the glacier at the top of the resort remains open as long as there is snow.

That means that even if there’s no snow lower down, you can still enjoy some early-season skiing. Val Senales is located in the South Tyrol region of Italy, and it’s a popular destination for both skiers and hikers.

Switzerland

Saas-Fee

Time to look at two of the most popular ski resorts in Switzerland that are open for skiing in October. Saas-Fee is a truly unique experience that I feel all skiers and snowboarders should experience at some point.

It is nestled high in the Swiss Alps which is why it has stunning scenery and reliable snowfall. October is a great time to ski here, as the crowds have thinned out and the weather isn’t as cold as it gets in the peak winter months. Keep in mind that you will have to pay more for resorts in Switzerland so that’s something to take into consideration.

Zermatt

Skiing in October is possible at Zermatt resort as it is open for year-round skiing! Yes, you can even go here in the summer months of July and August. This is why it offers an unforgettable experience as you won’t see this much snow on some slopes at other resorts in October.

There is something for everyone in the town of Zermatt, from beginner runs to challenging black diamond slopes. Zermatt’s ski pass is more on the expensive side, but you can ski as much or as little as you want.

North America

Arapahoe Basin

As we mentioned, North American ski resorts particularly those in the United States generally open to the public in November. However, at Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, you will be able to ski in October as long as there has been a decent amount of snowfall.

Situated high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Arapahoe Basin gets an average of 350 inches of snow per year, making it one of the snowiest ski resorts in North America. October is usually the start of the ski season in Arapahoe Basin and the snowfall gets better each month until the end of April, even May some years.

Some people love the early season conditions because there are fewer people making it more relaxed

New Zealand

Mount Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is a popular ski destination in New Zealand that is also still open in October. It is one of the best ski resorts in New Zealand and this is just one of the reasons that we say that.

October is an ideal time to hit the Mount Ruapehu slopes as the snow is still fresh and the days are long. The mountain is also relatively quiet at this time of year, so you can enjoy the natural beauty of the area without the crowds.

Skiing in September isn’t the easiest thing to do no matter where you are in the world. As it’s the end of the winter season in Oceania, there are ski resorts in Australia and New Zealand to consider. However, if you’re based in the United States or Europe then you might not want to make the long trip to these destinations.

We’re going to look at where is the best place to ski in September for those of us who hate these months between summer and winter. The chance to snowboard and ski mainly starts in November and depending on the resort ends in April/May. But, there are some resorts that are open in September too!

That’s why we’ve made this list of 10 ski resorts to try out in September. Keep reading to see which these are, but remember that the snowfall will differ each year.

Austria

Hintertux glacier

The first place we recommend for skiing in September is the Hintertux Glacier in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is actually Austria’s only year-round ski resort so you can even visit throughout the summer months such as July and August.

Hintertux Glacier is one of Europe’s most popular ski destinations for this reason. It is situated at an altitude of 3,250 meters which makes it perfect for skiing in September. The resort has a wide range of ski runs and pistes, as well as a number of chairlifts and cable cars. As well as skiing and snowboarding, Hintertux also offers a number of other activities such as hiking, mountaineering, and ice climbing.

There are runs to suit all skiing ability levels, so even if you’re still a novice you can go and learn when there aren’t as many people as during the peak months.

Sölden Glacier

Next is another resort in Austria that allows you to ski in September and this is Sölden. As with Hintertux, it is located in the Tyrolean Alps, and the high altitude means that snow enthusiasts can also visit in the off-season.

Some will argue that this is the best time to visit this resort as you can enjoy stunning views of the snow-capped mountains without hordes of people. That said, the snow obviously isn’t the champagne powder that you’ll find in the winter months.

Pitztal Glacier

As you can see, Austria is one country that allows for longer ski seasons as even the resort Pitztal Glacier can offer amazing experiences in September. The scenery is simply breathtaking and the ski conditions are still good during this early month.

The Pitztal glacier is one of the largest glaciers in Austria at a whopping 3,440 meters! This is why it offers some of the best skiing in Europe. Most years, you’ll find that the ski season here starts in September and lasts until May, so you can enjoy skiing in Pitztal Glacier nearly all year round.

There are a variety of ski runs to suit all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers, so there is something for everyone.

Kaunertal Glacier

The final Austrian ski resort to mention for where to go skiing in September is Kaunertal Glacier. It is one of Europe’s top ski destinations, and for good reason. The glacier is located high in the Alps, providing stunning views and excellent skiing conditions.

September is an ideal time to visit due to smaller crowds and the weather being cold but not like in deep winter. Kaunertal offers something for everyone, from beginner to expert, and there are plenty of ski schools and rental shops available. Although, you won’t find nearly as many ski instructors this time of year.

Italy

Passo Stelvio

Another country that offers the ability to ski in September is Italy. Passo Stelvio is nestled high in the Alps on the border with Switzerland and is actually cheaper than going to Zermatt which we’ll mention below.

The picturesque setting and challenging slopes make it a mecca for skiers from all over the world, not just Europe. Although the ski season typically ends in April, there is sometimes snow at Passo Stelvio in September.

The temperature always drops in September which brings with it snow on the top of the mountains. You won’t find as much snow here as at some of the ski resorts in Austria, but it’s an option if you prefer skiing in Italy.

Val Senales

It may come as a surprise, but September is actually an excellent time to ski in Val Senales, Italy. The weather is still cool enough to keep the snow from melting, but it’s not so cold that you’ll be miserable on the slopes at the end of a long winter’s day.

Plus, because it’s off-season, you’ll find fewer crowds and generally more affordable prices. So, if you’re looking for a winter getaway that won’t break the bank, consider packing your skis and heading to Val Senales in September.

Switzerland

Zermatt

Zermatt in Switzerland like Hintertux Glacier in Austria is somewhere that you can ski all year round. This obviously means that the month of September is no different. The image at the top of this post is of Zermatt if you’re wanting to see what it’s like.

It is perched high in the mountains offering stunning views of some of Europe’s most iconic peaks, including the Matterhorn. The village is also home to a lively nightlife scene, with a number of bars and clubs to keep guests entertained after a long day on the slopes.

Although, these generally won’t be pumping like they are in the peak season. That’s because September is one of the quieter months in Zermatt, so visitors can enjoy all that the resort has to offer without the crowds.

Saas-Fee

Saas-Fee is another Swiss resort that offers people the chance to go skiing early in the season. It is a smaller resort compared to Zermatt but it still has a lot to offer even in this quiet month.

The snow can be dry and powdery depending on the weather and the runs are well-maintained. As it’s off-season, there are no crowds which allows you the chance to ski at your own pace. This makes it great for both beginner and experienced skiers.

Australia

Thredbo

September in Australia is the end of the winter there which makes it still a suitable month to go skiing. One resort that allows skiing in September is Thredbo in New South Wales.

The snow isn’t as plentiful as it is during the peak season, but there are still plenty of slopes to enjoy this late on in the Australian season.

New Zealand

Treble Cone

New Zealand is known for its picturesque scenery, but did you know that it’s also a great place where to go skiing in September? The resort that we’re discussing here is Treble Cone which offers people visiting the last of the winter snow.

Treble Cone offers skiers some of the best slopes in the Southern Hemisphere so that’s a reason alone to go here for your early season skiing if you’re from another part of the world. With a variety of trails to choose from, there’s something for everyone.
