here’s the place. somebody go rescue an animal.

it seems like just as much of mise hits the floor as the pan. dig it. for dinner last night i decided to try to make a rather elaborate cream sauce using yon julia as my inspiration, meaning shit tons of cream and butter, but of course i don’t actually own any fucking butter cause my girlfriend throws this marzipan shit in my basket when i’m shopping so i had to use olive oil (but i did plunk down 3.99 for heavy cream at the god-forsaken organic grocery — the bodega was selling expired heavy cream for the same price, though twice as large of a container).

to begin: the meal started with some sauteed scallops with a blackberry reduction. the scallops were cooked nice but i thought the reduction pretty much sucked. for it i boiled down black berries, cranberry juice and a bit of vinegar. it tasted okay, just didn’t mesh well with the scallops which i just salted and peppered.

for the main course i cooked up some lobster ravioli i got at trader joes (it wasn’t great) andfor the sauce sauteed shallots, red onions, and garlic in olive oil, for a hot minute, dumped in a cup of pinot grigio, reduced a touch. oh wait, i forgot about the mushrooms, i also sauteed some mushrooms. all this mess got reduced a bit, as i said, then dumped in about a cup of cream. simmered a bit. by then the ravioli was ready. drained it and then dumped it in the sauce. mixed that shit around. voila. there you have it. lobster ravioli w/ mushroom/wine/cream sauce.

as i said, scallops not so great–cooked well, but the reduction was a flop. trader joe’s pasta, also pretty average. the sauce however, was fricking great. i think it would be really good w a chicken breast actually. next time that is what i will do. but back to julia. goddamn, if that wasn’t about the richest meal i’ve had in ages. my stomach was brimmed for hours after. how did that woman eat like that? how did fucking anyone eat like that?

ah for simpler times, when booze, cream, butter, and smokes didn’t kill you. or you didn’t know it was them that did.
