The cobbler has a mixture of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. We marinate these with orange zest and Gran Marnier and voila! the filling is ready and waiting for your order. You order it before you eat and we prepare and bake it just for you while you eat. It comes hot out of the oven right to your table. And, to get the white we top it with a generous scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Warm and cold and bustin' with summer flavors.

Here's what else you'll want to know about Friday, July 4th.

We're Open All Day!(11 AM to Midnight). One time I was looking for a place to eat on July 4th and could not find any non-chain restaurants so we have been open every since. I mean people still have to eat on holidays. We're grilling burgers all day for $6. And we are serving frozen drinks for $3.

And our new specials start on Friday and they are really interesting and delicious. The staff tasted them on Tuesday, then we perfect them on Wednesday and Thursday and start serving them on Friday.

Here's what we are working on:

Grilled Mahi-Mahi marinated in olive oil, chili, curry powder, lemon juice, lemongrass, and sweet Spanish smoked paprika. To make it a lighter summer dish we're serving it with Sharon's Slaw and Rice Fritters. It's a great combination that fills you up without being too heavy. Just right for the summer heat.

We've also got a Portobellino Pasta. This got the most what I call "food talk", that's those non-word sounds that let's everyone know "this is really good, but my mouth is too full to talk". We so seldom get to sit down as a group to eat and taste together that we have to maximize our tasting and talking time! We sautee the portobellino, (baby versions of the giant portobello), kalmata olives that we have delivered from our specialty food vendor, sun dried tomatoes, asparagus and tomatoes. We serve it over spinach linguini and top it with fresh goat cheese.

It is so much fun to taste these dishes as a group. We redefine "Family Style."It's almost reminds me of the old fashioned family restaurants where the family is there every day serving and sharing the same food they are eating. And since my family works at Chez Zee , and we treat the restaurant like it's our home it's pretty close.

I can't resist putting in one more note about one of our special desserts: double Decker Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake. Our cheesecakes are creamy, dreamy with the smallest amount of flour. I taste cheesecakes all over the world and ours are as good as any I've every had! No more description needed. Trying is believing.

So we'll be chillin', grillin', playing some music and "Saving a Chair for you" from 11 am until Midnight. Please come see us so the staff won't be mad a me for staying open. People have to eat. A kind of oasis on 6th Street, the Jackalope has a decadent lounge feel — dimly lit booths and velvet paintings line the walls around the padded horseshoe-shaped bar. Horror movies play on the various televisions. Out back there’s an outdoor bar, La Cucaracha, where you can smoke cigarettes and nod your head to the loud music or just gaze at the fire sculpture. The staff is hip, the clientele diverse, and you can always drink for cheap.

Tuesday is half-priced chicken wings, Wednesday is 2-for-1 burger night, and on Thursday all pints are $2 (amazing deal).

Self brings to the forefront a growing problem in our
military and shows how he lives with PTSD. An important event, today at
3PM.
**Sunday 27 7:30PM at Jones Auditorium - Eoin Colfer and his one-man show,
Fairies, Fiends and Flatulence
.	BookPeople is incredibly excited to be presenting internationally
best-selling author Eoin Colfer and his hilarious one-man show at St.
Edwards University on Sunday, July 27th at 7:30 PM. During the show Eoin
will give the audience a rare peek at the inspiration for the teenage
criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl. The title speaks for itself. We will be discussing books worth
discussing and sorting out, anything from David James Duncan to Dostoevsky,
from Hornby to Hemingway, from God's Politics to The Gospel According To
America; as long as it has something to say and knows how to say it, we call
it fair game. Come join Paul and Kester once a month for a new (or
noteworthy) book. This month's book is The Master by Colm Toibin.
Monday 28 - Zach Plague - boring boring boring boring boring boring boring
.	Calling this book unique is an understatement. Author/designer Zach
Plague has created a truly original novel that goes beyond words. Calling
it a hybrid typo/graphic novel, he combines image and text to tell the tale
of art school scenesters. There's love, drugs, art terrorism and, most of
all, things that aren't boring. Totally interesting and innovative, tonight
at 7PM.
Wednesday 30 - Patrice Sarath - Gordath Wood
.	Patrice Sarath is a local author with a brand new sci fi/fantasy
book! In Gordath Wood, two women are mysteriously swept into a hole between
worlds. They find themselves in the middle of a medieval war, where women
aren't considered very useful. It's a dangerous new world; luckily, these
women are up for the challenge. Tonight at 7PM.
AUGUST
Friday 1 - Gabrielle Faust - Eternal Vigilance
Friday 1 10PM-midnight -Breaking Dawn Dance Party!
Saturday 2 3PM - Christine and Ethan Rose - Rowan of the Wood
Sunday 3 - Personal Upgrade Book Club - discussing The Money Book for the
Young, Fabulous and Broke by Suze Orman
Monday 4 - 7% Solution Book Club - discussing The Big Sleep by Raymond
Chandler
Tuesday 5 - The Utter Reading Series
Wednesday 6 - Rewritten History Book Club - discussing Tai Pan by James
Clavell
Saturday 9 3PM - Glenn Taylor - Trenchmouth Taggart
Monday 11 - Carl Palm - This Day in California History
Tuesday 12 - Katie Hafner - Romance on Three Legs
Wednesday 13 - Robert Stikmanz - Entranscing
Saturday 16 3PM - James Parker - The Dark Side of the Cross
Sunday 17 3PM - Joe Lansdale - Leather Maiden
Monday 18 - Ludicrous Speed Book Club - discussing Summer Tree by Guy
Gavriel Kay
Wednesday 20 - Tom Frank - The Wrecking Crew
Thursday 21 - Adam Jones - Rose Bowl Dreams
Monday 25 - New & Noteworthy Book Club - discussing The Yiddish Policemen's
Union by Michael Chabon
Thursday 28 - Josh Frank - In Heaven Everything is Fine

Alison Kothe Nihlean
BookPeople Marketing Director
603 North Lamar Blvd
Austin, Texas 78703
512.472.4288 x207
www.bookpeople.com
events@bookpeople.com

News from Book People

The Truth About Organic Gardening

I just finished a great book about organic vs. conventional gardening. It is called "The Truth About Organic Gardening" by Jeff Gillman. Why did I like it? Well, for one it was an easy read. I'm a plant geek, not a bookworm. Also, I really agreed with the author, so that made it fun to read (self justification is good for anyone).

Mr. Gillman really throws it all on the table, comparing and contrasting several different organic and synthetic solutions to common pest and disease problems. He points out that while many synthetics are harmful to the environment, some are not so bad. Also, some organics can be very harmful to the environment. He even uses an old analogy I really like, "A rattlesnake is organic, but it is very deadly".

He, like I, definitely believes in using organics over synthetics, but just wants his readers to be informed of what it is they are using.

I came up with another analogy while reading that I would like to share, but be warned. If you wear your heart on your sleeve, you may want to stop reading.

If you found a dog that was ill, had mange, parvo, and broken legs, and the vet said the best thing would be to put him down, you might agree it was the humane thing to do. But we see people nearly every day that insist on "saving" and plant that is wrought with disease, pests, and suffering root systems. The humane thing to do would be to put it out of it's misery. It is also the best thing you can do for the environment. The best way to be safe is to spray nothing at all.

Just keep this in mind the next time you find spider mites on a $1.29 annual plant.

The Great Outdoors Newsletter

Ohio Garden Centers

Well friends, Jill and I just got back from a tour of Garden Centers in the Western Ohio area. As always, it is interesting to see another market and how they do things. The best lesson I learned is that you can have all the "makings" of a great garden center (paved walkways, tons of parking, all new equipment, etc...) but still not have a great garden center.
It made me very proud of how hard we have to work here at The Great Outdoors to make the place as beautiful as it is. I think you can really see the heart and soul we put into our place, working with what we have, to make every guests experience a wonderful one.
Thanks to all the people at the host garden centers and the ANLA staff for a wonderful tour.

The Great Outdoors Newsletter

From the Way Back Machine: the waitresses with Kent Cole, 1982

Back story: the Omelettry West was the first incarnation of today's Magnolia Cafe. Kent and his wife Patricia were asked to help open a new location for the Omelettry. K & P were quickly made part-owners of the new venture and went to work. Kent only learned to cook the day before the official opening.

A year later, Kent found himself single again. Perhaps that explains the gorgeous look of the waitresses in this picture.

The photo was taken by Jack Rheem for a special project: a 13-month calendar to be sold to customers (the extra month was called "Thermidor" which explains the extra long Texas summer between July and August). Each month featured a beautiful B/W photo of the early staff and cafe environment. It is the ultimate collector's item for Magnolia Cafe followers.

I'll eventually post all of the pictures to this blog. Thanks for your interest.

dP

Magnolia Cafes, Austin, TX

Spartan & Bows + Arrows Summer Bash

Spartan / Bows + Arrows Summer Bash
Saturday, June 28
Spartan / Bows + Arrows (Map)
12noon-7pm

This Saturday afternoon, South Lamar upstarts Spartan and Bows + Arrows will be hosting their first annual Summer Bash art and trunk show.

This happy hour is for folks who still don’t mind spending a little money, but it’s a good deal when you consider you’re saving about three bucks per specialty drink. They also discount seven items off the appetizer menu, including spring rolls, pot stickers, and hummus. Very upscale feel, romantic. There’s a sprawling patio shaded by a huge live oak, too.

We have a running dialogue with ourselves about the world around us, our past, our future, our present. Our subconscious mind presents itself in this process through gut feelings, biases, and preferences. We often act on these feelings without knowing why. What would our lives look like if we turned this conversation inward; dialogued with ourselves? How would our subconscious guide us, and what would it say? Would our lives be lived with intelligent intuition?
The artists participating in "Subterranean, Subconscious" demonstrate what can happen when one purposely opens the mind to these conversations. Each allows what emerges to direct the outcome. They approach their work with a desire to see what will reveal itself in the act of creation. As the work proceeds they feel as if the painting or sculpture is taking an active role in the process. It is an open dialogue between the artist and him or herself, and between the artist and the art. Viewing it, you join the conversation.
Art opens the mind. Art can bring our subconscious to the surface and give it a voice. What is our reaction when we see something that stirs us? Does it provoke? Does it calm? I invite you to listen; both to what the artists have to say, and to what you have to say in return. Give your subconscious voice."

Hope to see you there,
Marcy

Austin Art Start

Attend the next Metrohouse and Austin Art Start joint event!

Attend the next Metrohouse and Austin Art Start joint event!

Austin Art Start

Happenings at Bistro 108

We have a new sidewalk and ADA compliant ramp at our front entrance. Healthy and delicious.

In the last few weeks locally grown vegggies have been available. We have been serving locally grown tomatoes, black eyed peas and okra. It is so-o-o delicious. This week end we will be making a salad caprese with local home grown tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese, basil from our garden and extra virgin olive oil. Yum-m-m! come and enjoy. Tonight at 7PM.
Saturday 28 3PM - Elisabeth Rosen - Hallam's War
.	Hallam's War is a remarkable Civil War novel set in the
near-wilderness of West Tennessee. The book follows the Hallam family -
Hugh, Serena, their three children, and their slaves. As war looms on the
horizon, Hugh struggles to defend his family and his honor. Considered a
progressive (despite his ownership of slaves), Hugh and his family are
caught in the maelstrom of the times and must confront the strange new
reality they find themselves in. Beautifully written, Hallam's War resonates
with personal grief highlighted by moments of beauty and joy. Come join Adam S. and Kester once a month for a new (or
noteworthy) book. This month's book is The American by Henry James.
Monday 30 - Dani Rasmussen and Antoinette Perez - The Essential Pregnancy
Organizer
.	If you've ever been pregnant, you know that there are a thousand and
one things to keep track of. Between doctor's visits, baby showers,
cleaning the house and going to work, life is busy and stressful. Dani
Rasmussen and Antoinette Perez , frustrated with the lack of organizational
tools for the first time mom, created a system in The Essential Pregnancy
Organizer. Come by BookPeople tonight at 7PM as they talk about this book
and their newest creation - The Essential Baby Organizer!
JULY
(more information to come)
Tuesday 1 - The Utter Reading Series
. You are cordially invited to join Merrilee and Sharee every month at
BookPeople to explore and discuss works of historical fiction. Because, as
Oscar Wilde said, "Any fool can make history, but it takes a genius to write
it." This month's book is Dissolution by C.J. Sansom.
Monday 7 - 7% Solution Book Club - discussing Wicked Break by Jeff Shelby
.	From the dark and foggy alleyways of 19th Century London to the
austere modern high-rises of Tokyo, from proper Scottish tearooms to dank
Egyptian pharaohs' tombs, criminals ply their vile trade. Come join Sharee
and Tommy as they explore the worlds of fiction's greatest mysteries where
famous detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Amelia Peabody, Chief Inspector
Morse and many, many others pit their wits against literature's most
dastardly villains. With change in the air and plenty of light in the sky, we hope you’ll join us on June 21 for “Live United: A Call to Action”—a chance to have some fun, raise your voice, and help somebody. We invite you to be part of the change.

Lend your opinions. Lend your expertise. Give 110%. Influence the condition of one and you influence the condition of all. Find a volunteer project and sign up. Or create one of your own. Give. Advocate. Volunteer.

That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

“Live United” embodies the new United Way. It’s an invitation, a credo, and a personal promise. It’s a way of experiencing the world that gets us to think outside of our workaday bubbles. It’s a small, but potent, idea. We pause a moment, look around, and marvel at the power each of us has to improve our community right this moment.

So on June 21, the National Day of Action, United Ways across the country will join up with their communities, and together we will make a national declaration: We live united.

Join us Saturday, June 21, as Central Texas comes together to celebrate and illustrate the power of our voice. We hope you’ll be there. And as added bonus, the first 250 people to arrive on Saturday will receive their own “Live United” t-shirt.

What: “Live United: A Call to Action”
When: Saturday, June 21; 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Where: Jo’s Coffee (1300 S.
