Two new products lines, and a great shine-enhancer, from Redken

Perhaps you’ve heard the expression “never go to extremes.” That might be sound advice in some circumstances, but when it comes to hair care, extreme hair care is often what's needed to bring your strands back to something like silk, not straw.

Extreme Care by Redken has just the thing for hair that needs extra, extra care. Their groundbreaking technology , a dual patented Fortifying Complex and Interlock Protein Network, penetrates the hair shaft to prevent breakage, and create stronger, healthier hair. Without getting too technical, the smaller particles penetrate deeper within the cortex of the hair shaft and the larger ones are attracted to the surface. There are all sorts of high-tech ingredients and proteins that work within the hair, either separately or together, to give you hair shine, strength, and protection.

The Redken Extreme line includes 7 products: Extreme Shampoo; Conditioner; Strength Building Fortifying Rinse Out Mask, (new & improved with heat protection); Anti-Snap leave –in treatment , CAT Protein Reconstructing Treatment; and there's also an Extreme Chemistry In-salon Treatment (it gives a powerful boost of protein for deep internal repair and support). Redken shampoos and conditioners always feel so pampering, but they are reasonably priced for high quality hair care. The new Extreme shampoo lathers nicely, and gently cleanses the hair. The conditioner helps hair look and feel healthy and soft, and silky and shiny (all the things you want). But the big bonus with the Redken Extreme line is that, with continued use, the conditioning will become more apparent and lasting.

If your hair is dry, abused, colored and chemically treated, you either have to cut it off, or find something that will give it some tough love and lots of nurturing. While all of the Redken lines will help, this one is a double-shot of love for distressed hair. Like everything else, your satisfaction with the results will fit your expectations. If you want better looking, nicer feeling hair, and right now your hair looks dry and frizzled, these products will help make it feel softer and look better. Used properly and over time, these products really do help, but they aren’t going to take totally fried hair and mend it to the point where you can't tell there was ever any damage. he only cure for truly bad split ends and damaged hair is a good trim every 6-8 weeks until the new hair grows in. But all in all, it's a great line for badly damaged hair that you'll want to try.

I guess it might be easy to grouse abused and damaged hair as long as you have a lot of it, but what about those who don't have enough? For those with thinning hair, Redken has a new line of densifying products called Intra Force. These are supposed to create thicker, fuller hair within 30 days. The line has more than nine products (if I counted correctly) plus an in-salon treatment called “Purify” (a microdermabrasion-inspired treatment for thinning hair that provides gentle exfoliation for thinning hair to make it look thicker, and accelerate cellular turnover by 25%).

As someone with super-thick hair, I couldn’t try this personally, but did distribute the shampoo, condition and some of the other products in this line to several people who have thin hair. So far, the general consensus is that the products do make hair look and feel thicker. With most of the products ranging around $16.00 commensurate with other Redken treatment and styling products, it's something to try.

Two products in this line are the intensive, leave-in scalp treatment called Intra Force Micro Boost (for low-density hairlines) is $45.00 for 3.4 oz. and the intensive, single-serve treatment for noticeably thinning hair all over, the Intra Force Hair Advance is also $45.00 for 10 treatments in a box. These are than most of Redken’s treatments, but they are also very specific and intense. TIP: you can get and Intra Force Starter Kit with shampoo, toner and a scalp treatment for $35.00

No matter what type of hair you have, as long as you have some, there's another recent Redken product that gives your hair instant gratification -- a brilliant sheen. If your hair is normal, the shine will be enhanced, but if your hair needs TLC, this product will be just the thing after coloring, sun,sand,chlorine and salt has left it dull. This Redken product is Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist ($17.00 4.4 oz.). The shine-boosting spray has camelina oil and nourishing Vitamin B5. All you need to do is lightly mist it onto dry hair, and re-apply it when you want more (be careful though, too much will weigh down your hair). It multi-tasks as a frizz-fighter to tame fly-aways hair, too. Simply spray it on your brush and gently running the brush through your hair. Use it after flat ironing for a more polished finish, or, for a popular ponytail option, mist it on your palms and run them over the tail to smooth it down and make it rock-star, silky (you'll be seeing this look a lot in the Fall, as ponys were all over the Fashion Week runways). Take a tip from Guido, Redken’s Creative Consultant, and keep it on hand for a pick-me-up before you go out for the evening. He used it right before the models hit the runways during fashion week to give their hair that extra sleek, extra shiny look. You can use it for your entrance, no matter where it is. Just spray lightly—less is more.

Pop N Go is pretty great in the rain, and elsewhere

As I sat down to write this review of the Pop-N-Go Rain Scarf, I heard a large clap of thunder, and saw some lightening. Luckily, I'm inside, but this Summer has been exceptionally rainy.If I was outside, I'd be happy to have a Pop-N-Go Rain Scarf in my bag "just in case." If you don't want to lug an umbrella everywhere, or if you are on the road and can't always be certain you'll have your "bumbershoot" with you, the Pop-N-Go Rain Scarf might safe your head, well...at least your hair....literally.

These patent-pending scarves are long, silky, reversible, and stylish, but they also serve another purpose (besides decoration, or keeping your head and/or neck warm or out of the sun). Food, Wine and Fragrance Work Together at the Fragrance Foundation's Pop Your Cork...Naturally

If you work in the fragrance field, you already know that The Fragrance Foundation is an organization you need to be involved in. The organization was established in 1949 by six industry leaders affiliated with Elizabeth Arden, Coty, Guerlain, Helena Rubenstein, Chanel and Parfums Weil, to develop educational programs about the importance and pleasures of fragrance for the American public. The Foundation's International Membership includes all sorts of people, but mostly: manufacturers, suppliers, media, advertising and public relations agencies as well as designers, packagers and retailers. The organization maintains one of the most extensive print and video fragrance libraries in the world and among other things, holds seminars and symposia for its members as well as for the international fragrance industry.

Although I don't often get a chance to attend, the Fragrance Foundation has absolutely amazing events, both educational, and for networking. One such event that I did attend was entitled: "Pop Your Cork…Naturally." The evening event, presented by The Fragrance Foundation’s Associate Board on June on June 21, 2011 at the City Winery in Manhattan (155 Varick Street), featured a unique, four-course tasting menu with organic and locally-sourced ingredients, paired not just with organic wine, but also with a special group of natural fragrance accords.

The Fragrance Foundation events offer a chance to network, and learn something new

The meal was created by Jonathan Lindenauer, the former Chef de Partie and Sous Chef at Jean Georges and Chef de Cuisine at Bon Appetit. Business and networking dinners can sometimes be stuffy, but you could hear audible groans of delight as participants smelled, sipped, and supped. There aren't that many organic wines but Jenny Lefcourt, Co-Founder of Jenny and François Wine Selections, found very interesting ones that worked beautifully with the locally-sourced food. Olivia Jan, the Senior Perfumer of Robertet, accent each course with a natural fragrance accord inspired by and crafted to accompany the flavors in the dinner, plus a final scent that was the culmination of the flavors of the entire meal. This was quite an eye-opening experience, for while food, wine and fragrance are all organic, and rely very strongly on scent, one usually considers just food and wine as a pair. In fact, I've always been told not to wear fragrance to a wine tasting, as it might impair my olfactory abilities. Here, the fragrance was an integral part of the wine and dine, experience. The fragrance actually enhanced our enjoyment of the food and wine -- quite exciting!

Those attending who are immersed in the industry, seemed surprised at the pairings. But for me, someone who reviews fragrance from the consumer perspective, what I took away from this experience was more than just an appreciation for a talented chef, and some good wines in a category (organic) that I rarely consider. I got a chance to enjoy and evaluate the ingredients, artistry and pairings, holistically. While it takes lots of experience and talent to pull off an evening of organic food, wine and fragrance that work together, I will now more carefully consider "what works" with what I might wear (fragrance-wise) as well as what I'm eating and drinking. I also came away with a better appreciation for the challenges of producing organic wines, and foods.

Get a KICK(ER) out of your Music

The other day I introduced you to a unique gadget called the i-WOW! that enhances the quality of the music coming out of your Mp3 Player, iPad, and iPhone, but if you don't have one of these, you can still boost the bass and enhance the sound of your music, with some really nifty, and amazing affordable, headphones from Kicker. This company makes a wide range of very attractive, and effective, headphones.

One over the head style made a big impression on me. In fact, you could say it helped me get a "kick!" out of my music. was this pair of over-the-head adjustable, on-ear headphones ( HP201 headphones MSRP - $34.95) by Kicker, look trendy, with smooth, recessed earpads and a color scheme of blue and white, or black and silver (reminds me of high-end running shoes). While I normally wear in-the-ear earbuds when I'm walking around (and Kicker has nice products in that style, as well), these lightweight, adjustable headband earphones are angled to fit down over the ears and are extremely comfortable. While many headband style phones are made too large for a smaller head,with dinky, metal bands that don't stay put, this set is all plastic, and smoothly slides to fit any size. And, with the earpads close to your ears, you really do hear the sound better, but you can still hear what's going on around you. The "legendary" KICKER bass and premium full-range sound is in every set of headphones.

Cable breakage is one of the most common reasons people find themselves forking over more money for new headphones. But these Kicker phones have a durable, Kevlar®-reinforced cable that not only resists breakage, but also helps to make a secure connection with the phones, so you don't get static. The 1/8" jack is compatible with the iPhone recessed jack, but works with other players and products as well. I don't claim to be a tech-geek, but for those who need to know, the speakers feature premium 30mm drivers for superior bass and great sound quality, throughout.

What I really want you to know about these headphones, whether you're into superior sound, or you just want decent headphones at a good price, is that when I plugged them into my iPod, I could instantly hear the richness of sounds, the enhanced bass, and nuances in music of all types. While it's not exactly concert hall quality, it's close enough to satisfy even the fussiest of budget-minded, audiophiles. These earphones are seriously impressive.

For those who are love in-the-ear earbuds, Kicker offers an attractive product: the EB91 In-Ear Monitors, also $34.95. You can get these in basic black or in silver, pink, or gold. The buds are made of lightweight aluminum, and feature a few different rubberized audio earplugs to fit large, normal and even small-zied ear canals. These earbuds are noise-isolating (but you can still hear what is going on around you, unless you blast your player at full throttle--see below for a warning on this). While I found the sound quality on these to be a lot less exciting than on the headband-style variety, they still delivered pretty decent sound. The The EB91’s 53-inch, black braided cloth cable is reinforced with Kevlar® for long life. I love the braided cloth weave that is smooth to the touch, and a lot less tangle-prone. The EB91 MicroFit In-Ear Monitors connect to any one-eighth-inch jack, including the unique recessed jack on the iPhone,™ with a corrosion-resistant, nickel-plated plug.

A note to those who blast their eardrums with sound: I am sure you already know that exposure to excessive sound levels can cause permanent hearing damage. If I can hear your music blasting in my own ears when I'm standing or sitting right next to you, the chances are you are listening to your music at a way-too-high decibel level. Furthermore, wearing headphones or earbuds is great, but it's also a distraction. Never use earsets when operating motorized vehicles, riding a bicycle, or during any situation where you need the full use of your hearing for the safety of you and others. In case your'e wondering, wearing any earset may reduce your ability to hear sounds from your environment and can create a hazard to you or others that could result in serious injury or death. And, if you have little ones at home, be aware that the innocent-looking headphones or earbuds include small parts and cords that can cause choking or strangulation (so keep them away from the kids).

Mini Serving Pieces Make Maxi Impact at Your Next Gathering

Puppies, kittens, bunnies…all of these are cute, but even cuter when they’re mini sized babies. The same is true for serving pieces such as the mini-sized, single-portion glasses from Libbey. They may not be as cuddly, but they're still cute, and great to make a big splash at your next gathering.

At a recent holiday preview at the Marriott in Times Square, I met up with the good folks from Libbey glass. You probably are familiar with their full sized glasses, bowls and the like, but Libbey makes a bunch of minis that make a mighty impact when you present them to your guests or family. For example, the Mini Mar5ini set gives you six, 3 oz. mini sized martini glasses along with a small, glass pitcher (presumably to mix up the martinis in). But while a 3 oz martini might not quite whet your whistle (unless you were a Lilliputian or a very light drinker), these pint-sized pretties can also be used to serve appetizer-sized, single portions of ceviche, or ice cream, or some other tasty treat.

Another just serving idea is the “Just Desserts” box of what look to me to be mini-sized sherry glasses, but they’ll serve up puddings to teeny parfaits. For the diet-conscious, try a dollop of Greek yogurt topped with some fresh berries for a guilt-free dessert. Or, place a small round a pound cake in the bottom, topped with fruits and whipped cream to delight each and every person at your table with their own literally “short” cake! The Just Desserts set has 25 pieces: a dozen, 2.7 oz.. Glass dishes, a dozen, graceful, mini-sized stainless steel spoons, and a recipe card. Of course, you can use these in so many ways besides dessert. There's a lot to love, about Libbey. The company even has a couple of cookbooks that will inspire you to use your mini-sized (and regular-sized) serving pieces. This company has been producing quality glassware since 1818! You can find these mini-sized servers and a lot of other Libbey glass items, at mass market retailers such as Target and also at restaurant supply and in-store retailers, and online.

Bobbi Brown Tortoishell Collection is a Modern Classic

The "Advice Sisters" a long time ago in Barbados!

My first trip on an airplane, was to the beautiful island of Barbados, over the Christmas holiday. Although it was many, many years ago, one of the things I remember most (besides the amazing beach right outside the door of our villa) was a visit to town, and the department store, Cave Shepherd. The first floor was literally, littered with trays and trays and trays of tems made from a pretty, brown material that I didn't recognize That brown stuff, turned out to be genuine Tortoise Shell.

Tortoiseshell or tortoise shell is a material produced mainly from the shell of the hawksbill turtle. Although it was widely used in the 1960's and '70's, now it is an endangered species. Today, if you want something of tortoishell, it will be made of a material that mimics the appearance of the real thing. But the flattering, warm, semi-translucent tortoishell is still a beloved, classic material for accessories, such as jewelery, and eye glass frames.

Recently, Bobbi Brown was inspired by beautiful tortoishell to create a Fall '11 Tortoise Shell Collection. Two eye shadow palettes and a lipstick provide her signature neutrals in easy to wear, flattering colors. I didn't try out the Bobbi Brown Tortoise Shell Eye Palette $60.00 in Sand or Bronze, but I did get a chance to slick on one of the new, Rich Lip Color Lipsticks SPF 12 $23.00 in Soft Nude, and Twig that are featured in Bobbi Brown's Tortoise Shell Collection. The lipstick gives you a bit of the best of both worlds, intense pigment with clear and moist base that is creamy and luxurious. As with many of Bobbi Brown's lipsticks, many of her colors in this collection are still subtle and natural looking, including these two, new shades. But there are also some colors in the collection that offer the trendy, color pop! preferred by bold color fans. But the flattering neutrals won't put you to sleep, either. They have enough "oomph" so your lips look "polished" but not obvious. The SPF 12 is a nice touch to protect your lips, a leat a bit, from the sun's damaging (and aging) rays. The texture is to-die-for lovely. Treat yourself!

Although there are still a few kinks to work out, both sites are up and functioning, and I didn’t want to wait any longer to let you know about them. Be Wowed, by i-Wow

Very few things knock my socks off right out of the box, but one that really did make me go "WOW!" was the i-Wow 3D audio adaptor that I recently saw at the Holiday Gift Show at the Marriott Hotel In Times Square. i-Wow isn't the distant cousin of Jersey Shore reality show character, Jenni "Jwoww" Farley. It's a little gadget that boosts (enhances) the sound quality of your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or iPad II (featuring a 30-pin Apple connector).

Apparently, there have been older iterations of this clever idea, but what it does, it does astoundingly well. That is: boost the bass, improve the treble and make even the smallest device sound like you're in the recording studio with the artists. What it does, I'm told, is retrieve and restore audio cues that are buried within the original source audio, so you hear the things that many music players and speakers simply can't unearth on their own. The i-Wow offers three-dimensional sound that feels like you're simply "there" with the music.

Plug one end into your music device, the other into your headphones. When you're ready to go "WOW!" press the button in the middle of the i-Wow and immediately hear the difference. With simple earphones and an iPod, the sound is remarkably better, but with really great earphones, the sound difference will make you go, WOW!

The SRS iWOW 3D is available in three models:

The colorful faceplates won't make the sound any better, but they do look special, and will entice, especially for younger people who long to be the trendiest kid on the block. As to the iWow itself, it's a bit akward, but once you hear the difference in the sound your device makes, you'll never want to be without it.

There is also a downloadable app for i-wow through iTunes that lets you choose between headphones, speakers, or the speakers on your notebook computer. That makes things even easier, with more options. You can choose the type of music you are listening to (e.g. blues, country, rock, classical) and the software automatically adjusts to the most ideal balance for that genre. The free downloadable app helps you adjust audio settings such as bass, treble or surround, and lets you select speaker settings for headphones, car or external speakers. Whether you're using the downloadable version of I-Wow or the actual, physical gadget you plug into your iPod, you'll be amazed. While I'm not an audiophile and can't really tell you about all the specs on this wonderful i-Wow, I DO know great sound when I hear it. I truly, honestly went "WOW!" the first time I heard the difference. One thing: to make or take a call on an iPhone you have to remove the physical iWow gadget from your phone.

Invite a Sailor to Your Barbeque -- Sailor Jerry,That is!

Not long ago, my weekend guest and I had drinks with a sailor! Sailor Jerry (rum) that is! This unique and delicious, 92-proof blend of Caribbean-style rum with vanilla, lime and other spices, is subtle in sweetness and spice. It's a perfect mixer over ice (or frozen) with juices, but it also can add something special to your barbecue sauce of even mixed into meat ( to help with caramelization on the grill). It would be delicious, drizzled over Vidalia or sweet onions, or even in veggies you steam in foil on the grill).

So who was Sailor Jerry? While I'm not into tattoos, I have learned that Norman (Sailor) Jerry Collins (1911-79) was an "old school" tatoo artist whose work is still admired by afficiandos, today. And his beautiful, classic artswork are now the inspiration for the bottle designs of Sailor Jerry Rum (not doubt Jerry Collins liked a "noggin" now and then).

While tattoos don't really thrill me, some tattoo art is really spectacular. For example, the swallows on the bottle of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum that I received, are graceful enough to almost fly away Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins incorporated swallows into a number of his designs. I've learned that for sailor, a swallow signified 5000 miles sailed. Plus, swallows are associated with return. Swallows return to their home in San Juan Capistrano every year, so a swallow is associated with guiding a sailor, home. And, if a sailor dies at sea, it is thought that the birds will carry his soul home to heaven. But Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum is more than just a pretty label. Some spiced rums are so overly-spiced or cloyingly sweet, you can barely drink them on the rocks, let alone use them as mixers. But Sailor Jerry rum lets the natural sweetness of the flavor come through, without over sweetening or spicing it. The result is a rum that holds up to mixers, but tastes refreshingly light on it's own over ice (or you can drink it straight, if you wish). I liked simple recipes, so I simply mixed Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum with a can of mango and papaya juice, and served it to my weekend guests. It was a big hit!

On a hot day, try Sailor Jerry Backyard Tea – made with lemonade and iced tea and of course, Sailor Jerry Rum. Or, go for something hot and wild, with an explosive combo of ginger beer, pilsner, Tabasco and Sailor Jerry rum. The recipes for these two are below. These are just two suggestions to get you started. You will want to experiment with your favorite ingredients, too. Back Yard Tea

2 parts Sailor Jerry Rum
1 part iced tea
2 parts lemonade

Glass: highball

Method: Add ingredients to in ice-filled glass and garnish with a lemon wedge

Hellfire
1 part Sailor Jerry Rum
2 dashes Tabasco sauce¼ of a fresh lime
1 part ginger beer
Pilsner beer of favourite lager beer

Glass: beer glass

In a medium pot, add 1 liter Sailor Jerry Rum,
4 to 5 quartered oranges, 3 lemons and 2 limes
(3 – 4 tablespoons of mixed fruit juice concentrate optional)

Reduce at a rapid boil by about 75% or until slightly thickened, strain and let cool Pick your favorite brand of BBQ sauce. In a new pot bring desired amount of BBQ sauce to a slow warm adding the Sailor Jerry Rum mixture a little at a time. For us, about 5/6 parts BBQ to 1 part rum mixture worked out well but taste along the way to see how you like it. Tasty on ribs and pulled pork!!

Remington Pearl Ceramic Pro-Styling Wand Creates Classy Curls Without a Clamp Line

This may look like a pink light sabre from a girly version of Star Wars, but actually, it's a Remington, T-Studio Pearl Ceramic Professional Styling Wand. The clamp-less curling iron takes a cue from the golden days, when women heated up a metal rod in the fire, and then curled their hair around it. However, in the old days, these rods could do a great deal of damage to hair, as you already know if you've read the famous scene in the classic book: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott (and if you are among the minority who hasn't, get it and read it now).

But today's curling irons are heat regulated, and full of all sorts of safety features. But many of these modern hair curling irons have a clamp to keep your hair in place and sometimes, those clamps can leave an ugly crimp in your hair. The Remington, T-Studio Pearl Ceramic Professional Styling Wand has all the bells and whistles, and safety features of the modern curling irons, but they've gone back to that golden age, and removed the clamp off the rod.

That's not the only thing that makes the ceramic pearl styling products, unique, however. The Pearl Ceramic technology incorporates real fresh water pearls crushed to nano-sized powder and infused into each tool – the plates of the irons, the barrel of the curling wand and the grill of the dryer (heat-activated). The ceramic pearl coating allows for a smoother glide and creates extra shine as you go over the hair. In the styling wand, the result is shiny hair that bounces with life (and no ugly mark). The 1" to 1/2" styling wand goes up to 410 degrees (that's hot, as Paris Hilton would say), and it heats up super-fast (in about 30 seconds). There is also an automatic shut-off if you get distracted and leave the hot iron, unattended. Well placed, easy to use digital controls, a cord that swivels, and a 4-year warranty make it even better.

However there are a few things to know about this unique product to see if it's right for you. For starters, you are going to be wrapping your hair around a hot piece of meta, just like "Jo" did in Little Women. You won't burn your hair off as she did (modern irons don't get that hot or fluctuate and you should use a heat protectant when you use a heat styler) but you can burn your skin. A heat resistant glove is included so you don't burn your hands, but if you touch that curling iron to your neck or ears by accident, it's going to hurt. Also, although you can control the tightness of the curl by how much (or how little) and how long you hold hair around the iron, it takes some getting used to. And, finally, if you have a thick head of hair, you need to section it carefully and patiently work on each section. It takes a little time and practice to get it just right every time.

While this isn't the perfect product for me, personally because I have little to no patience and a lot of long, thick hair that really doesn't need too much encouragement to curl, I can see it being a real boon to anyone who longs for bouncy curls, quickly. L'Occitane's Verdon Fragrance Pampers Him

These days, men have gotten a lot pickier about what they put on their face, and about the scents they choose to enjoy. One that's perfect for Summer, by L’Occitane is "Verdon," a sporty, light and somewhat aquatic fragrance featured in an Eau de Toilette, and a very impressive set of men's grooming products, from face wash to deodorant. The scent, I've been told, is inspired by the Verdon Gorge in the south of France.

While I'm not sure what a gorge smells like, even in France, but it smell smell mighty good! In fact, I like the scent so much, I'm using some of the products as well (so call them "unisex." The fragrance notes include a blend of peppermint, citrus and aquatic notes, plus bergamot, lemon, lavender and cedar.The overall vibe is manly, but fresh and slightly citrus-centric.

One product in particular that I recommend is the Verdon Outdoor Moisturizers SPF 30 ($32.00 1.7 fl. oz.). The green, pump tube has a manly, grey pump top and dispenses an SPF 30 product infused with that lovely, Verdon scent. The product is water resistant, but now that the FDA has changed the guidelines, I can say it protects in a broad spectrum UVA/UVB way, but it's not waterproof (just water-resistant). Still, the product is non-greasy, smell great, is fast and clean to apply, and if this product doesn't get him to protect his skin, I can't imagine what will! It's also good for travel. The active ingredients in this product are: 10% Octocrylene; 4.3% Titanium Dioxide; 7.5 % Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnimate/Octinoxate; and (for another tongue-twisting active), there's Phenylbenzamidazole Sulfonic Acidensulzone.

When he's ready to wash off sand, sea and sun lotion, treat him to the Verdon Face Wash $20.00 5.1 fl. oz. The deep sea-green bottle has a grey, flip top dispensing one of the most pleasant face washes I (and my male reviewer) have ever epxerienced. It has purifying peppermint essential oil, moisturizing sea-buckthorn water, genepi extract and spring water (to protect his skin), and a nicely-foaming formula that is gentle, but also removes excess sebum and impurities. The bonus for him is that without any work, his skin will be clean, clear, and matte. It's hard to beat that!

I and my reviewer didn't try the other Verdon-scented products, but hey, they're L'Occitane quality. You can't help but love them. Get Verdon items at L'Occitane stores or online

Advice Sisters Health Tip: NEW FDA REGULATIONS FOR SUN SCREENS: In case your'e wondering what "broad spectrum" is all about, there are two types of harmful rays created by the sun. UVA rays cause aging; UVB rays cause burning.) While many products claimed to be broad spectrum and protect your skin against both types of rays, some really didn't. So now the FDA's regulations require that any product labeled as “broad-spectrum”or that claims to protect against skin cancer or premature aging,must provide equal protection against UVA and UVB rays. The product must also carry an SPF rating of 15 or higher. If a product has different levels of protection against UVA and UVB rays, it can only carry an SPF that reflects the lowest level of protection. So if your favorite sunscreen has a label of SPF 30 protection against UVB but only SPF 15 protection against UVA, the product’s new label will only be allowed to show SPF 15. And, any sun protection product that has an SPF 14 or lower, must now post a warning label stating that it has not been shown to protect against cancer or skin aging.

Who doesn't enjoy a splurge now and then? But if too many weddings, showers and graduations have dried up your beauty budget, here are some budget-friendly beauty products that will get you through the Summer:

The Advice Sisters have included excellent Aveeno products in my reviews since they began, more than a dozen years ago. One of the things I love about Aveeno product is their attention to detail, at a reasonable cost. While Aveeno Active Naturals sunblock sprays have been around for a long time, providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and nourishing ingredients, the brand continues to come up with new and even better products. For example, Aveeno Active Naturals new Hydrosport Sunblocks have higher levels of SPF, including SPF 50 and SPF 85. The spray cans have an all in one twist open/close top (so no fumbling in the sand for that top that popped away from you), and the light, water resistant spray that is designed to be applied even on wet skin, is clear with only the lightest, freshest odor (and that dissipates quickly). The products have nurturing, natural ingredients to keep skin happy and safe and they create a thin, breathable shield that repells water and perspiration, thanks to an exclusive, lotus complex made with naturally-derived ingredients.. The lotion comes in a plastic tube with flip top cap, and has 3% avobenzone, 7% homosalate, 5% Octosalate, and 10% octocrylene and 6% Oxybenzone. The products are wrapped in orange (sun colored) packaging with clear tops, and are pleasant to use and more importantly, effective as long as you use them regularly and properly. That has made Aveeno Active Naturals one of my favorites (so much so, I agreed to be a brand ambassador, this year). There are plenty of other sunblocks that suit other skin types and needs, so visit the Aveeno Web Site and also your favorite drugstore and mass market retailers. Stock up, and save your skin!

Scuunci is always coming up with new, novel, fun, pretty and elegant hair accessories. The latest, fit for woman or girl, is the Bendini Clip. At first, Bendinis look like decorative loops with a bunch of little fingers coming out of them, but upon closer inspection you can see that they are hair combs with a decorative twist It took me a minute of consulting the illustrated instructions on the back of the card to see how to use little combs slide into your hair (and then you can literally flip/snap the decorative beads or metal accents over them to make a secure hair clasp) Hair stays tight with the clip and comb, and only the decorative loops, show. They’re easy to use, simply gather your hair and place the Bendini clip into hair teeth forward, then clip and snap the loop forward, over the comb. The Bendini comes in packages of 2 small enough to use as side clip and there is also a large Bendini that you can use to secure a bun if your hair isn’t too thick, or secure a half up/down style if your hair is more abundant. There’s even a Bendini Girls, with colorful, plastic hearts with little crystals (honestly, I like these best even if they do show a little girl on the packaging) and smaller combs. There is one with an elegant, metal and crystal accent, and one with pearls, sparkly roundels, and tiny faceted beads. They are clever, and fun, just the kind of thing ballerinas in training, or you, will want for Summer. What I really like the most is that it helps fight sun damage and offer other lip-loving benefits, and it's non-sticky, and works for sensitive skin. There is an entire line of skin-loving, protecting and anti-aging products in this line to try. If you can't rationalize the cost of the original Kinerase, these are not just an alternative, they're impressive on their own. In the morning, I want something on my face that is refreshing and that will wake me up, but at night, I want something soothing, so I can go to sleep without feeling “jarred” by my beauty routine. Ponds has just come up with a dynamic duo of disposable, textured, Wet Cleansing Towelettesthat do just that. The textured cloths lightly exfoliate. They're dermatologist tested , hypoallergenic, there is no need to rinse after you've used them (great for those who just can't manage to wash their face at night), and you just use and toss. With many wipes (or if you use a cotton pad) you may have to scrub a bit, but these dissolve most makeup in just a few swipes. You won't have oily residue in your eyes (the towelettes are so alcohol free, hypo-allergenic, and non-comedogenic). You've probably seen them before, but these are good, and inexpensive, too at just $5.00 for a generous, 50 sheets! Everyone needs to carry these!

Aladdin Collapsible Bowls Grant You More Than Just Three Wishes

Not long ago I attended a holiday showcase at the Marriott Hotel in Times Square.The holidays may not exactly be on most people's minds, but for businesses, the time to showcase their latest and greatest products for the holidays, starts now.

One set of products that caught my eye were from Aladdin. Maybe they don't have a magic lamp to grant you three wishes, but they can produce some pretty impressive serving and storing products. In fact, they're been doing it since 1908. You might have actually used one of those little character lunch boxes when you were a kid, but they have a lot more than that.

For example, the Aladdin Steam & Dine ($9.99) is a unique, collapsible steam/store/serve bowl that is not just microwave and dishwasher safe, it actually packs flat, then opens up into a nice sized soup/salad sized bowl. That would be nice enough, but it has a little vented steamer with a vent in the top, so you can bring your veggies to work, raw, and steam them perfectly so they're hot and crispy (instead of limp and ugly) when you're ready for lunch. When you are finished eating, the bowl collapses flat again for storage. The lid is easy enough to remove with a handy little "tab" that unscrews the top, counter-clockwise, but it is tight and leak-proof. Pop open the little yellow vent on top, add three tablespoons of water, and you're ready to steam. You can also see through the cheerful sheer red top, so you know what's going on. It's dishwasher safe, too. For someone trying to eat healthy at work, a zip lock of veggies or a stir fry, and this little bowl, can help make healthy, delicious. If you have a kitchen with too few cabinets at home, consider it a space-saver, too.

...and speaking of space savers, I also was entranced by the Aladdin Collapsible Bowl Set ($19.99) featuring three colorful, collapsible bowls that don't steam, but look pretty much like the Steam & Dine in terms of the top, and the format. They stack perfectly, and take up a lot less space than bulky bowls that in my house at least, always seem to fall out of the cabinet onto the floor, or onto me every time I search for something. They're microwave and dishwasher safe. You get a 32 oz bowl, a 16 oz bowl and a small 4 oz bowl that seems perfect for salad dressing or perhaps, something like a pudding. The lids screw on/off and hold tight, and they're just so cheerful, fun and utterly cool.

Both the steamer and the collapsible bowls would be great for someone who lives alone and has lots of leftovers, too, for newlyweds, for families, for everyone. Ditch the wine and flowers, and bring these to your weekend host/hostess, too.
