Even with most people distracted by the Giants or Patriots or whatever elaborate gameday dish they’ve been working on, this weekend still marked the first time in history that two movies opened above $20 million against the Super Bowl.

Based on studio estimates, Chronicle held off The Woman in Black to take the top spot this weekend, though Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Potter outing was impressive in its own right.

Chronicle debuted to an estimated $22 million, which is the fourth-highest Super Bowl debut ever and second-best among movies targeting at men behind Taken ($24.7 million). It did earn less than major found footage flicks like Cloverfield ($40.06 million) and last month’s The Devil Inside ($33.7 million), not to mention the last two Paranormal Activity movies, though that shouldn’t detract too much from this movie’s success.

Another weekend, another win for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. The latest Twilight movie claimed the top spot at the box office for the third-straight weekend thanks to an average hold and a comparatively poor second-weekend performance from its biggest competitor, The Muppets.

Breaking Dawn dropped 60 percent to $16.5 million. That tally is the best third-weekend gross out of all of the Twilight movies including New Moon.

Adventurer Mark Moffett was on Little Barrier Island in New Zealand when he found this guy. The giant, cricket-like insect was recently declared the world’s biggest and is so large that it eats full-sized carrots. He came across the cricket-like creature, which has a wing span of seven inches, after two days of searching on a tiny island. The creepy crawly is only found on Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand. The species was wiped off the mainland by rats accidentally introduced by Europeans.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 easily repeated in first place at the box office over Thanksgiving weekend, while The Muppets revived the long-dormant franchise with a strong second place debut. Arthur Christmas and Hugo weren’t quite as fortunate, though the true measure of their success will be determined over the next month.

Breaking Dawn added an estimated $62.3 million for the five-day weekend, which is a bit off from New Moon‘s $66.3 million over the same time period in 2009.

Michael J. Fox, who traveled through time and alternate versions of the past and future as McFly in the beloved “Back to the Future” trilogy, hosted his annual charity benefit on Saturday night. Called A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s, the event in New York City featured plenty of big names and performances, but none of them could touch what Fox pulled off on stage.

1. Do what you love. Connect ideas from different fields.
4. Say no to 1,000 things. Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the “A-Team” on each product. What are you saying “no” to?
5. Create insanely different experiences. Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers?
6. Master the message. You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can’t communicate your ideas, it doesn’t matter. Jobs was the world’s greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.
7. Sell dreams, not products. Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. It’s so simple, a 2-year-old can use it. Your customers don’t care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, you’ll win them over.

A woman floating on a surfboard near Santa Cruz, California almost ended up on the lunch menu for a humpback whale over the weekend. Barb Roettger had her camera rolling as two hefty whales popped out of the calm waters not far from the unsuspecting surfer and a pair of kayakers.

A pod of humpback whales has been hanging out off the Santa Cruz coast, noshing on anchovies that flock to the area to feed on plankton. The woman found herself in the middle of a feeding frenzy called lunge feeding, which occurs when whales herd anchovies and shoot straight up out of the water with their mouth wide open to catch the fish.

The whales have had quite a few dangerous close encounters with humans and boats in recent months. Whale watchers are warned to stay at least 100 yards away from the feeding area which can be a quarter mile square. Roettger says she has now gained a greater respect for whales, their feeding patterns and will now only spectate from the decidedly safer dry land.

In this first video, it seems that they get along.

High five with a whale: If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off; the only way to save her was to dive in and untangled her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

Mona Simpson, Steve Job’s sister, wrote the following post in the New York Times about his last days:

His breathing changed. It became severe, deliberate, purposeful. I could feel him counting his steps again, pushing farther than before.

This is what I learned: he was working at this, too. Death didn’t happen to Steve, he achieved it.

He told me, when he was saying goodbye and telling me he was sorry, so sorry we wouldn’t be able to be old together as we’d always planned, that he was going to a better place.

He made it through the night, Laurene next to him on the bed sometimes jerked up when there was a longer pause between his breaths. She and I looked at each other, then he would heave a deep breath and begin again.

This had to be done. Even now, he had a stern, still handsome profile, the profile of an absolutist, a romantic. His breath indicated an arduous journey, some steep path, altitude.

He seemed to be climbing.

But with that will, that work ethic, that strength, there was also sweet Steve’s capacity for wonderment, the artist’s belief in the ideal, the still more beautiful later.

Steve’s final words, hours earlier, were monosyllables, repeated three times.

Before embarking, he’d looked at his sister Patty, then for a long time at his children, then at his life’s partner, Laurene, and then over their shoulders past them.

Richard Hammond is in Johannesburg, South Africa to test the Marauder, a ten-ton military vehicle so tough it can withstand high explosives. Great HD clip from Series 17 of Top Gear.

Like the original Hummer, the Marauder is a military vehicle, that not all the civilians can buy, at a cost of 300 thousand pounds.

Among the activities tested in the tv show, were ordering fast-food from a drive-through restaurant, driving off-road, and — specifically in comparison with the (non military) Hummer H3 — being blasted by seven pounds of plastic explosive. Unlike the (civilian spec) Hummer, which was completely destroyed by the explosion, the Marauder was still operational and sustained only minor damage for the most part, although it did drive off with a flat tire

The Marauder is an armoured, mine-protected vehicle that is produced by the Paramount Group in South Africa. It was launched during the 2007 International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and Conference in Abu Dhabi, the largest arms exhibition in the Middle East.

A bigger vehicle than the Marauder, is the Matador (11 ton, also produced by Paramount Group)

If you’re a maker at heart, you’re probably one of the 10 million people geeking out over this online construction adventure, called Minecraft.

Minecraft is a low-fi, 3D-blocked game that allows users to mine resources and turn them into building blocks. Players then use additive manufacturing techniques to build amazing structures from the ground up.

Located within Edison State Park, the Center consists of the Art Deco Edison Memorial Tower and a small museum devoted to Thomas Alva Edison.

Scent of a Robot is a great hip-hop song from 2004 (part of the album Camouflage Is Relative), it is about an office worker than one day discovers that he is not human but a robot, and than even his wife, child, co-workers and his boss are robots too.

The viral video before viral videos existed! This video got Pete Miser’s website (www.petemiser.com) shut down twice for too much traffic. Finally on Youtube in high resolution. Scent Of A Robot was directed by Alex Moors (www.alexmoors.net) and produced by UV Phactory (www.uvph.com). You can buy the song and read the lyrics here:

The team of UVPhactory tried to be true to the narrative within the song, but wanted to give it a little twist. Moors likened the main character to that of a rabbit in a laboratory infused with conditioned programming. The video is full of little details that reinforce this theme. One fun example is the revelation that all the commuters on the subway are robots complete with their own robot iPods. The creative vision of the video constantly highlights this tendency of the masses to all act and look alike. No motion capture was used in the video, including the robot dance scene.

Software used in its Special Effects

UVPhactory created a pixilated “robot vision” using a simple mosaic filter in After Effects. This broke down the footage into cubes with limited colors. To further unify the aesthetic, they used SOFTIMAGE|XSI’s toon shader as a base and built custom shaders to couple the hard-edged toon look with more natural soft shading. The team composited with Adobe After Effects 6.5, a perfect program for a company that uses freelance compositors. Apple Final Cut Pro 4.5, Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe Illustrator CS were also used in the completion of this project. [Source: www.awn.com]

4chan founder Christopher Poole (moot) gave a speech at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Poole claimed that Internet users should have a choice as to whether they want to stay anonymous on the web or use their real identities. The argument comes as Facebook and Google push to remove anonymity from the web.

Google and Facebook would have you believe that you’re a mirror, but we’re actually more like diamonds. Look from a different angle, and you see something completely different. Facebook is consolidating identity by making us more simple than we truly are.

Facebook and Google do identity wrong, Twitter does it better, and I want to think about what the world would be if we did it right.

The iPhone 4 appears to do less depth of field during filming than the iPhone 4S.

Both the iPhone 4 and 4S require manual focus adjustments by the person taking the video as the subject moves closer or further away. No adjustments were made during the shooting of this video.

A thin superconductor layer (~1µm thick) is coated on a sapphire wafer. Quantum physics tells us that the magnetic field penetrates into the superconductor in the form of discrete flux tubes. The superconductor strongly pins these tubes, causing it to float in midair. This effect is called quantum levitation.

The 22-year-old British actor Jamie Waylett, who played as Vincent Crabbe in Harry Potter, part of the Slytherin house and one of Malfoy’s friends, has been arrested for looting and packing a homemade bomb during the London riots in August. Police picked up Waylett after security camera footage caught him stealing from a drugstore while carrying a Molotov cocktail, which they say he intended to detonate (but apparently never got the chance to). Waylett is charged with violent disorder, possessing explosives, intent to destroy or damage property, and receiving stolen goods—and as if all that weren’t enough, in the investigation that followed, police also discovered the crop of 15 marijuana plants Waylett was cultivating back home.

Recently he published in his Google Plus account the following statement comparing his work at Amazon versus Google:

I was at Amazon for about six and a half years, and now I’ve been at Google for that long. One thing that struck me immediately about the two companies — an impression that has been reinforced almost daily — is that Amazon does everything wrong, and Google does everything right. Sure, it’s a sweeping generalization, but a surprisingly accurate one. It’s pretty crazy. There are probably a hundred or even two hundred different ways you can compare the two companies, and Google is superior in all but three of them, if I recall correctly. I actually did a spreadsheet at one point but Legal wouldn’t let me show it to anyone, even though recruiting loved it.

I mean, just to give you a very brief taste: Amazon’s recruiting process is fundamentally flawed by having teams hire for themselves, so their hiring bar is incredibly inconsistent across teams, despite various efforts they’ve made to level it out. And their operations are a mess; they don’t really have SREs (Site Reliability Engineers) and they make engineers pretty much do everything, which leaves almost no time for coding – though again this varies by group, so it’s luck of the draw. They don’t give a single shit about charity or helping the needy or community contributions or anything like that. Never comes up there, except maybe to laugh about it. Their facilities are dirt-smeared cube farms without a dime spent on decor or common meeting areas. Their pay and benefits suck, although much less so lately due to local competition from Google and Facebook. But they don’t have any of our perks or extras — they just try to match the offer-letter numbers, and that’s the end of it. Their code base is a disaster, with no engineering standards whatsoever except what individual teams choose to put in place.

To be fair, they do have a nice versioned-library system that we really ought to emulate, and a nice publish-subscribe system that we also have no equivalent for. But for the most part they just have a bunch of crappy tools that read and write state machine information into relational databases. We wouldn’t take most of it even if it were free.

Personal Setup – iTunes is no longer required to activate and set up your device for the first time. Your device can also be restored from an iCloud backup or iTunes backup during the set up process.

Over The Air Updates – Download new software updates right on your device over wi-fi or 3g. These are delta updates meaning only download the changes.

iCloud Backups – Backup your device without the use of iTunes with iCloud. iCloud backups will automatically be made when ever your device is plugged in, the screen is locked, and connected to a wi-fi network. Manual backups can also be made under iCloud in settings.

Wi-Fi Sync – For those still interested in using iTunes, cut the cord and sync over wi-fi.

Mac Os Lion: For the first time Apple has offered Mac OS as a digital download. The results are staggering, Lion has been downloaded 6 million times. It took Windows 7 20 weeks to reach what it took Lion 2 weeks to get to in terms of install base.

MacBook Air: The customers love it, and the competitors are trying to copy it. The MacBook Air is just a portion of Apple’s entire lineup of Macs.
MacBook Pro and iMac: Both are the #1 best selling notebook and desktop in the US. This momentum is not just limited to a mode. The Mac outgrew the PC market by almost 6x. Every single quarter for 5 years the Mac has outgrown the PC market. Apple is now approaching 60 million users. In US retail Macs are now selling in about 1/4 PCs in the store.

iPod: Across the last ten years the iPod became the number one music player in the world. And in the US the market share has been above 70% for a very long time. Over that period of time Apple has cumulatively sold 300,000,000 of iPods around the world. To put that in context, it took Sony 30 years to sell 230,000 of Walkman cassette players. The MP3 market is a mature market, and the iPod is still a large and important market for Apple. 45 million iPods have been sold in the last year ending in June. Almost half of those are going to people buying their first iPod.

iTunes: It started 8 years ago, Apple had 200,000 songs in our music library. It now has 100x that many: 20,000,000 songs. iTunes is the #1 music store in the world, with over 16 billions song downloads.

iPhone: The iPhone 4 has sold over half of their total iPhones sold in the entire time they’ve been selling iPhones. It’s the number one smartphone in the world. Apple has a great customer satisfaction according to the following Bar Chart:

iPad: iPads passed a quarter billion unit sales mark. Apple believes iPads can change the way teachers teach and kids learn. Pilots are replacing 40 pound flight bags with iPads, making pilots more efficient, and planes more fuel efficient. iPad in medicine: 80% of the top hospitals in the US are now testing or piloting the iPad. Companies: 92% of Fortune 500 are testing or deploying iPad. This is in less than 18 months.

App Store: There are more than 500,000 apps in the App Store. More than 140,000 of these are made specifically for the iPad.

All of these together makes the App Store the number one store for downloading apps. Customers have downloaded more than 18 Billion apps. And it’s accelerating. They’re downloading them at a clip of more than 1 billion per month.

Apple has paid developers more than $3 Billions.

iPhone 4S: A5, new antenna system, new optics, HD video, and now Siri.

The iPhone 4S has the same Retina Display than the iPhone 4. It also looks the same. But inside it is all new.

Screen: 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi. 800:1 contrast ratio (typical). 500 cd/m2 max brightness (typical). Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on front and back.

The A5 chip is now making its way into the iPhone: Dual-core CPU, 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics. Up to 7x faster in the previous iPhone. One area you really see it scream is in games.

Battery life: Increased to 8 hours talk time. (iPhone 4′s Talk time was up to 7 hours on 3G, so we gain one more hour)

Wireless system: iPhone 4S can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality. Data can now be downloaded up to 2x as fast. Theoretical max performance used to be 5.8 up and 7.2 down — now doubles to almost 14.4 Mbps down.

Today Mozilla is releasing Firefox 7. This update contains work that has been stabilizing over the last 3 months and there are quite a few interesting things to talk about.

Firefox now supports text-overflow: ellipsis

Firefox now supports the ellipsis mode for the text-overflow property. This property is supported in other browsers which means developers should be able to start using it in the wild. Here is an example of how text-overflow ellipsis works:

Browser Compatibility with the Ellipsis Property

Less Memory

Firefox 7 uses 20 to 50 percent less memory and also now cuts back on memory leaks and waste from Javascript.

Closing tabs now directly removes those tabs from memory and leads to more resources free as time goes on.

New Design

The address bar now eliminates the URI from the current page and highlights the primary domain to simplify spotting fake sites. Bookmark and password syncing occurs more frequently. Windows users now get hardware acceleration of HTML5 Canvas pages.

Another major Firefox revision is expected within about six weeks. Mozilla has entertained the prospects of a partial return to slower, major milestone releases but hasn’t signaled any such change coming before Firefox 8.

WebSockets: Updated protocol and available on mobile

WebSockets is now enabled by default for Firefox for Mobile. For mobile networks that are high-latency and have high connection setup-up costs, WebSockets offers an opportunity to create a much better experience than is available with polling HTTP.

Firefox has updated to the most recent draft version of the WebSockets protocol from the IETF. This is version 8 of the protocol, but is draft version 10. This will be mostly of interest to people who are building applications on top of WebSockets and tool vendors, but is worth calling out since it affects backwards compatibility.

An even faster Canvas element

The canvas element in Firefox 7 is even faster. Based on that you are likely to see much snappier performance on many demos when drawing to canvas elements. For an example, see their Runfield demo.

Web sites can no longer resize your main browser window

It is no longer possible for a web site to change the default size of a window in a browser, according to the following rules:

• You can’t resize a window or tab that wasn’t created by window.open.
• You can’t resize a window or tab when it’s in a window with more than one tab.

Support for the new Navigation Web Timing Spec

Firefox Update 7 now supports the Navigation Timing spec. This allows a web page author to monitor parts of web page performance in the page itself. For people who are interested in page load and navigation performance, they can send that back to the server which can give them a better view into real-world performance.

The first themed “land” will be built at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with construction expected to start by 2013.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide has sealed a deal with filmmaker James Cameron and producer Jon Landau, Fox and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment to create themed attractions at Disney parks based on the 2009 movie.

The first Avatar attraction will be inside the Animal Kingdom park. Disney said this was chosen because “with its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the Avatar stories, which share the same philosophy.”

The deal is exclusive to Disney, which plans to roll out other Avatar attractions over time.

The parks will not only play off the huge hit movie which dominated the box office for months in 2010, but also benefit from the release to two more movies now in pre-production. Cameron has announced plans to release those movies at Christmas 2014 followed by the second at Christmas 2015.

Four newcomers weren’t quite strong enough to unseat The Lion King (in 3D), which held the top spot for the second weekend in a row.

The Lion King in 3D achieved $21.9 million this weekend, bringing the re-release’s 10-day total to $61.5 million. When added to previous Lion King grosses, the movie has now made $390 million, which is good for 12th place on the all-time domestic chart. Many theaters are opting to continue to play the movie past the initial two-week engagement, and therefore it’s now guaranteed to top $400 million and enter the all-time Top 10.
