As we enter the holiday season and approach year end we reflect on our purpose and measure our progress toward our goals. As a professional enterprise our mission is to provide professional quality services to our clients while providing our staff with rewarding employment and our shareholders with return on their investment. As individuals it is our duty and our privilege to be of service to our fellow man, to our enterprise, and to our world.

As the end of the year approaches, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued partnership. It has been an exciting 2011 here at AeroMetric, we were involved in a wide variety of challenging projects, providing on-Target geospatial solutions to clients like you. In addition, our hard work was recognized; earlier this year, we were included in the Inc. 5000 list as one of America’s fastest growing companies. More recently, we were honored as the MAPPS Grand Award winner for our geospatial cloud solution. However, all this was only possible due to the daily efforts of our staff and business associates like you who make our jobs a pleasure and keep our firm successful.

Alaska and AeroMetric

Mining is important to Alaska. The state has been associated with gold mining since the famous gold rush began in the 1890’s. However, Alaska mines also produce silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum and coal, as well as aggregates. As the largest state in the US, Alaska has the most area yet to be explored and developed in the search for natural resources. Extraction of these resources accounts for a significant portion of Alaska’s economy.

Similarly, Alaska is very important to AeroMetric. Tools such as aerial Imagery, satellite imagery and geospatial technologies are vital to developing the state’s natural resources. AeroMetric has been supporting exploration companies, miners, and oil and gas companies with geospatial services since opening our Anchorage office in 1960.

In the fall of 2010, AeroMetric was selected by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide current and accurate 2.5 meter resolution orthoimage coverage of the entire State. Alaska’s Statewide Digital Mapping Initiative (SDMI) will provide up-to-date and complete coverage and will strengthen the alignment between state and federal mapping interests. The SDMI imagery will supersede Alaska’s last statewide imagery collection –the Alaska High Altitude Photography (AHAP) program, acquired 30 years ago. The new imagery will show current conditions and trends over the Alaska landscape, and will become an essential tool for Alaska’s economic development, livability, and public safety.

We enjoyed meeting with our customers and partners at two conferences in Alaska this month. The Alaska Miners Association Convention and Trade Show (November 7-13, 2011 - Sheraton Anchorage Hotel) was a great venue for sharing knowledge between miners and vendors.

The Alaska Resource Development Council’s 32nd Annual Conference (November 16-17, 2011 - Dena'ina Civic & Convention Center) featured the latest forecasts and updates on Alaska’s main industries, as well as information on how companies are navigating the current economic environment. On Thursday, Governor Parnell spoke to the conference regarding state initiatives to spur economic growth.

Welcome! And thank you for visiting AeroMetric’s Insight, our new blog. In this space we will be presenting our collective points of view in the realms of mapping, photogrammetry and other areas of imagery and geospatial technology.

Insight will provide a venue for imagery and geospatial science experts from AeroMetric, our partners, clients and colleagues to discuss and comment on interesting projects and technical issues as well as current events and emerging technologies.

This blog marks a new milestone of AeroMetric’s web outreach, a transformation which began a year ago with the introduction of our new brand and website. Our blog is the foundation of our social media infrastructure. With AeroMetric Insight and our associated social media properties on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and Slideshare we are formally joining the global conversation on the web.

Why another geospatial blog?

It is sobering to think that it was more than a decade ago that “The Cluetrain Manifesto” went live. I read it in book form back in 2000. When the authors said the “powerful global conversation” had just begun, I wondered what that really meant and whether it could truly breach corporate firewalls. Today, this conversation has moved from the insider realm of geeks into the mainstream and is transforming the way companies work inside and outside their firewalls. Marc Benioff, the founder and visionary CEO of Salesforce.com calls this new corporate model the “social enterprise” and describes it in compelling terms.

Personally, I believe that by extending our conversations online, our blog will help us advance our profession and add value for the people and organizations we do business with by allowing us to engage more effectively with our clients, colleagues and competitors in a constructive exchange of ideas.
