Wow.

Your notes about your flight over the Rockies in your AA-1 brought back many memories. Your Grumman is a beauty and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did mine. Fly safe.

Mountain flying, density altitude, and the AA-1 Yankee

Hi
could you explain to me how you figure your density altitude for your trip with an example. Also I have always been confused with presurre altitude. I understand the definition, but when you are in your plane flying and you read the indicated altitude would that be the pressure alt or is it the true alt. OR do you subtract the pressure reading in your Kollsman widow at the alt you are flying with your Bari metric pressure reading which you got on the ground from takeoff. Really confused can you help me out with an example .
Regards
Chris

Improvements

Thanks, Steven.

Ive seen one of those cars on Top Gear Hammond managed to obtuse park into a fence and the system seemed pretty complex. Weve already got airliners that can land themselves, yet hand flying still gets done a majority of the time.

Of course, that Lufthansa Airbus crew from this weeks incident seems like they could use some more practice hand-flying crosswind landings

Improvements

Well, you’re right about the design changes to the blog – it looks good to me (on the aeronaut site) but I don’t remember what it looked like before since I only read the feed!

As for the autopilot updates – sweet. Nowadays you can even get cars that help you to parallel park. Will hand flying become a lost art? :-)

The future, wouldn't that be nice

Yeah, the KAP leaves a lot to be desired. I haven’t gotten any time in Diamonds yet, so you’re lucky as well! There aren’t many places around here that train in them, and there don’t even seem to be very many flying in the area.

The S-Tecs we had in the Seminoles at UND drove an FD but a lot of people had issues with wobbling on and off of altitudes with that setup.

The future, wouldn't that be nice

Lucky you ! I flew some DA40 with G1000, but as for the time being the GFC700 is not certified on this plane, I had to cope with the KAP140.

Lack of flight director is certainly a bad thing. I’ve learned IFR on planes with a KFC150, so I expected some similarities, but they are none.

The KAP 140 is more simillar to the STEC familly than other King autopilots… so I had to think twice pefore pressing any button…

King Schools syllabus oddities (and other thoughts on teaching at a Cessna Pilot Center)

David, I agree completely. However, that’s why it’s so important for the rules of thumb to be right – they need to work properly when you’re under pressure, or else that makes everything else worse.

If you’re expecting a hold to turn out one way and it doesn’t work at all, then your stress level increases despite the use of a quick and dirty rule of thumb.
