Latest show is up! here & here

Tompkins Projects is pleased to announce its third exhibition, REFASHION , which examines contemporary fashion’s influence on two emerging artists. Refashion changes and evolves over the course of the exhibition. At the show’s onset, Korakrit Arunanondchai and Pamela Lee take over the gallery with their collaborative fashion label Korakrit*Pamelalee, featuring a new line: THRS (fashion for Thursday night art openings). When the show opens, there will only be a trace of artist and fashion designer Ari Fish’s work. Each week, Fish’s sculpture, drawings and design will be added and pieces of Arunanondchai’s removed, ending with a closing reception in a space that barely resembles the show’s opening night.

Korakrit*Pamelalee are a collaborative from Brooklyn, NY. Korakrit Arunanondchai and Pamela Lee met while students at the Rhode Island School of Design. Arunanondchai is a printmaker and designer originally from Bangkok, Thailand. His prints and paintings are complex and multilayered, as can be seen in his aesthetically similar laptop designs for Dell Computers. Pamela Lee has an emerging career in the fashion industry and has interned for the avant-garde fashion label threeASFOUR.

Ari Fish is an artist and fashion designer from Kansas City, Missouri. She holds a degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and works in a wide variety of media-from fibers to ceramics and drawing. This spring she was awarded a prestigious Charlotte Street Award by Kansas City’s Charlotte Street Foundation. Prior to seeing her work at Tompkins Projects, you may have seen her on season 6 of Project Runway.

Tompkins Projects is an exhibition space in Brooklyn, New York. Founded by two Rhode Island School of Design graduates, Milton Stevenson and Jeanne Jo, Tompkins Projects is dedicated to showing compelling contemporary artwork from emerging and mid-career artists.

Tompkins Projects is located at 127 Tompkins Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, near the G and JMZ trains and the B54 bus line. It is street level and handicap-accessible. Tompkins Projects is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 6 pm and by appointment.

From A Star, a Soap and the Meaning of Art by James Franco

I have been obsessed with performance art for over a decade—ever since the Mexican performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña came to visit my class at Cal Arts summer school. I finally took the plunge and experimented with the form myself when I signed on to appear on 20 episodes of “General Hospital” as the bad-boy artist “Franco, just Franco.” I disrupted the audience’s suspension of disbelief, because no matter how far I got into the character, I was going to be perceived as something that doesn’t belong to the incredibly stylized world of soap operas. Everyone watching would see an actor they recognized, a real person in a made-up world. In performance art, the outcome is uncertain—and this was no exception. My hope was for people to ask themselves if soap operas are really that far from entertainment that is considered critically legitimate. Whether they did was out of my hands.
