Babes With Blades: Tanith Belbin

If you're asking yourself what's ice dancing (is that what they call it now?) have to do with swords? More importantly, why is Archie even blogging about ice dancing??? First of all, I call "no homo". Second of all, it's not about ice dancing. This BWB just happens to ice dance. Third, the Winter Olympics are here!

So what does ice dancing have to do with swords? Simple, they skate on them! Ok they're not swords, but they're called blades. And if you've seen Blades of Glory then you know what I'm talking about. Iron Lotus anyone?

Today's BWB is Tanith Belbin. Another import from Canada (hmm...that's twice in a row. Maybe a trip to Canada is in order). You know her from the 2006 Winter Olympics where she won a Silver Medal alongside her partner (strictly platonic) Ben Agosto. At 25 years old (FYF), her and Ben will be competing again in this year's Winter Olympics.

New Sade Album This Year - Update

Back in April '09 I heard a rumor that Sade was back in the studio. Well obviously the rumor was true. Sade is back with her new album Soldier of Love. It's been 10 long years since Lovers Rock and she and her band still have it. Listening to her music just brings back a certain nostalgia and a feeling of simplicity that's uncommon nowadays. No T-Pain autotune, no Timbaland beats, no Lil Wayne cameos--just straight r&b Sade style. It's heavy on the emotions, but this time around you feel a sense of a nurturing/motherly tone. I've had the song "In Another Time" on repeat since I bought the cd. It's a great song to slow dance to...I'm just sayin'.

I still say Love Deluxe is her best album, but if you're a Sade fan you can't miss this one. I'd be a soldier in her army. I mean, if you're not fighting for love then what are you fighting for? In the immortal words of Flight of the Conchords, "If every soldier in the world put down his weapon and picked up a woman what a peaceful world this world would be...Redheads not warheads. Blondes not bombs. We're talkin' about brunettes not fighter jets..."

I'm starting a new segment this year that combine two of my favorite things ever: beauties and swords. I'm calling it Babes With Blades. Let's go!

Today's BWB is Saskatchewan's own Julia Voth. She's best known as the face and character model for Jill Valentine on Resident Evil (the video game, not the movie). This year, she stars as one of the main protagonists, Trixie, in Bitch Slap, an action movie that puts a new take on the old "B" movie films of the 70's. Lots of eye candy for the fellas, just don't expect it to win an Academy Award anytime soon. According to her bio, "From a young age Julia has trained in many forms of fight and weaponry; including bow and arrow and guns." My kinda lady! Bonus points for brunette status. New Sade Album This Year???

I was driving home last night and Sade happened to be playing on the radio. When the song ended, the dj said that she heard from India Arie herself that Sade was making a new album and that it was close to being finished. My eyes grew wide and my jaw dropped--HELL YEAH! Today I did a little bit of googling and discovered there's a new Sade website. So I'm guessing something is in the works. It's been 9 years since her last album, Lovers Rock, and I'm dying for a new one. I hope she uses T-Pain voice in her new album--NOT! Although I am curious what she would sound like. Well, I'm hoping that she is coming out with something new and it's not just a rumor. See what happens...

Now this is my kind of vampire movie. Let's see...swords--check, martial arts--check, old-time settings--check, cute asian girls--check (Koyuki--nice), no sparkling vampire skin--bonus!

BLOOD, THE LAST VAMPIRE tells the story of a mysterious girl known as Saya (Gianna Jun), who is employed by a covert US government agency to eradicate a species of vampire-demons that is about to threaten mankind. Half-demon herself, and armed with just a samurai sword and a whole bunch of attitude, Saya kicks vampire ass like nobody you have ever seen before.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's coming stateside any time soon. I'm hoping it does or at least get a dvd release. I guess Underworld: Rise of the Lycans can hold me over until then...

Sidenote: I finally saw Twilight the movie a couple of weeks ago and just like the book (yes, I've read it) it only got interesting at the very end. I'm probably gonna stay away from anymore teenage-vampire-love story themes from now on unless it has the above qualifications.

Google Latitude--Good or Bad?

So Google has launched yet another amazing application called Google Latitude. According to Google with Latitude you can:

See where your friends are and what they are up to
Quickly contact them with SMS, IM, or a phone call
Control what your location is and who gets to see it

all from you phone or PC. So basically, when you open this program it shows you where your friends are--provided they can actually install Latitude on their phone and have added you as their friend. It's pretty neat and would probably come in handy in certain situations.

Let's say for instance you planned a surprise birthday party and everyone was at the house waiting for the celebrant to arrive. You get a few false alarms and whoever is with the celebrant has to sneak away and call or text you and let you know they're coming. With Latitude you probably won't get any false alarms or have to sneak away because you'll know where they are.

Or say you're a parent wondering where your teenage daughter was. She won't be able to lie to you and say she was at her friends house the whole night while she was actually at a concert. And if she decides to "hide" herself, all the more reason you know she's lying to you.

Now I'm guessing whoever made this program up probably didn't want to use it just to know where his/her buddies are--hell no! For arguments sake let's say it was a dude. He was probably thinking, "Gosh, I'm sure spending a lot of time here at Google. I wonder what my girlfriend is up to. She better not be messing around my back. I wish there was a way I could know where she is at all times. Oh, I know!" BOOM--and Google Latitude was born. He was probably friends with the guy that created the "Incognito" window option on Google Chrome. "I wish there was a way I could look at porn so that my girlfriend won't know. Oh, I know." BOOM--and Incognito was born. Uh...back to my point. So now boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives, booty-callers and booty-shakers(?) can all keep tabs on each other. I can totally picture this on a sitcom where one girl is using Latitude to see where her man is only to find that her best friend is at the same place. Oh boy!

As you all know, I'm a fan of beauties. I'm even a bigger fan of beautiful voices. When I heard Juris from MYMP sing back in '05 (I think), it was literally music to my ears. I kept telling my friends, "Guaranteed best voice of the year!" Ever since then I've always been on a look-out for undiscovered and not-yet-a-superstar female singers who just have amazing voices. Kinda like my self American Idol. And if I had my own award to give out, it would be called the "Juris". I stumbled across a few likely candidates while reading some blogs the other day. They get bonus points for playing another instrument while singing and being retarded (funny retarded that is).

It's been over a month since I left the Fox and so far its been cool. It takes 15 minutes to get to work with traffic and going home less than 10. The best part--no more paying toll! And yes, I still do not have FasTrak. As far as food goes, Burger King, McDonald's, & Wendy's are less than 5 minutes away. Unfortunately, Jack in the Box, Carl's Jr., & In n' Out are a bit farther but still worth the sacrifice. I love burgers! There's a bunch of Filipino restaurants nearby too, but I haven't checked them out yet. I've been definitely craving some toscilog so maybe sometime this week. I should really start to learn how to cook.

I think all I need now is a vacuum cleaner, a couple of bar stools, and another floor lamp and maybe I'll start inviting people over. This ain't no Club Caspar, but it'll do. So guys, if you need to get away from your nagging girlfriends or wives, feeling like your manhood is slipping away, or just need a little bit of slack from that ball and chain feel free to come over and we'll head on over to Sporty's, the Kit Kat Club, or the Brass Rail to help you alleviate your issues. Ladies, I have 3 stripper poles if you feel like practicing. I hear its a great workout. I'm just kidding folks! I'm just hoping I get more visits this year than Fred.

On a sad note, Comcast finally stopped giving me free cable. The previous tenant never cancelled his service and I was getting free cable under his name. I'm guessing Comcast finally figured it out. Damn you Comcast! I'm still debating on whether I should get cable or not because 1) having cable makes you less productive and 2) it's not really useful unless you have a Tivo or some sort of DVR and I'm not sure that's in my budget yet. See what happens then...

I've decided that 2009 is all about making new habits, trying to be a better person, and appreciating where I am, who I am, and what I have. It's not going to be an easy year for many people, but if we surround ourselves with our loved ones, friends, and family--as my Dad would say,"It'll always get better!"

I would just like to thank everyone again who helped me move: Ro and Brian--thanks for lifting heavy stuff, Mike--thanks for the couch, Isleen--thanks for the kitchen essentials, Brother--thanks for the microwave and driving back and forth, Dad--thanks for helping me with the Ikea stuff, and a big thank you to Jason and Joy for not complaining when I would walk naked around the house these past 4 years. Just don't post any pictures up on Facebook! Seriously though, I can't thank you guys enough...

Weirdest Dream This Year So Far II

I woke up with a start this morning at around 6:50am. I had another freaky dream which got me a little scared. This is what I could remember...

I was walking down a street which I believed to be somewhere in New Orleans. It was evening and all the streetlights were lit. I've never been to New Orleans in my life so I don't know where I'm getting this. All I remember was that I had a big smile on my face and a accordion-type folder under my left arm. The reason I was so happy was that the folder had hella money in it. All of sudden, an old creole lady comes out of an alley and starts begging me for money. I ignored her and kept walking. I head down the street and noticed something to my left. I turned my head around only to find the old lady quietly trying to rip open the side of the folder. She was so sneaky I didn't realize she was following me the whole time. I screamed at her, "Get the f*#k away from me!" I checked the folder to see if it was ripped and luckily it wasn't. I was hella pissed off. I remember thinking to myself, "I just want to go home." So I kept walking, faster this time, and then the black guy who was on Grey's Anatomy but got fired(?) comes up to me and starts calming me down. He said things like, "I know how you feel man..." or "Yeah, that wasn't right..." etc, etc. Before I knew it he had lead me to the front of a deserted house where the old creole lady was waiting. I was in complete shock. He tricked me! Then I was afraid for my life and everything went black. I woke up again in my dream and found myself in a room with the creole lady and Grey's Anatomy guy standing in front of a seated Bruce Willis with his hands tied behind his back and mouth gaged. Picture the torture scene in the last James Bond movie Casino Royale. "Holy shit..." is the last thing I could remember thinking. Then I woke up and that was that. I could hear Joy or Jason starting up the shower in their bathroom and I got pissed that it was probably hella early still. I turned my head and looked at my alarm clock--yup definitely early...but at least it wasn't an old lady trying to take my money.

Since I'm not 30 anymore, my blog was due for a change. There were a couple of templates out there that I liked, but I decided to just modify it myself. So, after about a week of trying to teach myself HTML/XML, I think I'm pretty much done revamping my blog. It's a good thing I have a few programming classes under my belt, otherwise I wouldn't have attempted any of this (i.e. FAIL). Blogger has some new features that I wanted to try out too. For example, if you look at the bottom of this post you'll see some new buttons. If you don't feel like commenting but still want to give me feedback you just have to click on one of those buttons. Pretty nice feature don't you think?

It's official. I've signed up for the Nike Human Race in LA on 8/31/08. What better way to celebrate being 31! Actually I can think of several, but how many times can you say, "I raced a million people all over the world." A big shout out to Mark B. for this suggestion.

At first I wasn't sure I even wanted to do this. Last year while running around Coyote Hills (training for the San Diego Rock 'n Roll Marathon), an unbelievable pain ran through the left side of my left knee the day after. It hurt like a mother f*cker! I hoped it would disappear in a week. I thought it was probably just old age. So a week later I tried again and the same pain popped up. Not good. After several attempts of trying to run again I figured out that I could only last about 20-30 minutes before my knee would give out. Long story short, I ended up not running the marathon and swore off long distance running.

Fast forward to about a month ago. Here's a snippet of Mark's conversation with me:Mark: you down to RUN?

i'm recruiting right now

me: as in miles?

10:13 AM Mark: YES

are you in the market?

i bet i can get you there faster than you think

me: WOW

how long we talking about? my knees are f'd up

10:16 AM Mark: i think you can do it

we're talking 10K

10:17 AM that's 6.2 miles

me: holy!

Mark: dood...i just ran 5 on saturday morning

i don't know how....but i just did

me: nice

hahahhahaha

Mark: let me get you hype right now

10:18 AM me: are there gonna be naked chicks running along with us? ...Mark: aight. You ready to run?

i can give you 5 good reasons

me: name them

10:44 AM Mark: 1. Running the Nike Human Race is for a good cause. (charitable event)

2. The race is in L.A. so possible beauties

(also a chance to get out of Fewark)

10:45 AM 3. Good exercise for body (training and the race itself)

And I basically made my mind up there. I would only be running about 6 miles, nowhere near a marathon, so I figured why not. But I didn't want to register until I knew I could actually run 10k without my knee failing. It happened on Monday--and my knees feel fine (relatively). What did I do different? I started out slower, ran on flat ground, and did a lot of foam rolling.

If you scroll all the way down you can also see a calendar of the training I've done so far. It beats having to post my workouts all the time. Thanks to Joy for suggesting this. If you need some fitness advice, don't hesitate to ask. I'm no means an expert, but I got a few tips if you're open to new ideas.

Work sucks! Everyone agrees with that. The work to day-off ratio is wrong, its draining, and its probably the biggest deal-with ever created. How does one get through a day of work? For me, I take a lot of drugs. Pills in fact. I suggest you do too--and do it often. The drug of choice--my chill pill. I take my chill pill the first thing at work, before and after lunch, and before I leave to go home. The great thing is its free, available 24/7, and come in all different flavors. You want one don't you? C'mon, take one. I won't tell. Here you go. Doesn't that make you feel better?
