AFF July Roundtable: Conservatives and the Academy
The dysfunctional state of the Academy has been well known to conservatives since William F. Buckley published God and Man at Yale 50 years ago. Once the Baby Boomer generation started getting tenure, the situation only got worse. The Right has largely ceded control of higher education to the Left, with a few exceptions. Some conservatives attend an openly conservative college to ensure a proper education. Is this a sound strategy, or is a more systematic approach needed? Can we afford to abandon the Academy?

This month's roundtable will be held Thursday, July 17th in the Heldref Publications Building, 1319 Eighteenth Street NW, in the Reid Ballroom. As usual it entry is free for members and $5 for non-members, so become a member today! Please RSVP to Cindy@americasfuture.org.

AFF on the Road Minnesota
"AFF on the Road" next stop: Minneapolis, Minnesota! On Thursday, July 24th America's Future Foundation will host "The Pre-convention Debate: Has the GOP gotten the message?" just a few short months before the Republican convention.

Coming off special election losses and into its convention, has the GOP gotten the message? Conservatives and libertarians have demanded that Republicans live up to their limited government principles. And yet, many Republicans in Congress voted for further increases in spending in the recent 2008 Farm Bill. At the convention, does McCain and the GOP leadership have what it takes to pull the party together around a program of limited government? Or, are the concerns of the conservative and libertarian "base" irrelevant as Obama and McCain vie for independent-minded swing voters? Join America's Future Foundation to find out.

Joining us for this conversation is Jeff Larson, CEO of the Minneapolis St. Paul 2008 Host Committee for the 2008 Republican convention and founding partner of Feather, Larson & Synhorst and Ryan Sager, author of "Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians and the Battle to Control the Republican Party". We’ve all heard the dreaded question at some point in our liberty-advancing careers: Why don’t you get a real job? Usually it comes from a well-intentioned family member-maybe even your mom. Perhaps they are concerned about your ability to make a living working at a non-profit organization. “All that Ramen can’t be healthy,” they say. “The private sector pays much better.” What is the best way to respond? Is it possible to make a long-term, successful career out of fighting for liberty, or are we better off putting in our time in the movement then departing to find “real” (i.e. private sector) employment? Are people who go for-profit “sell-outs” and, if so, is selling out inevitable?

AFF DC March Roundtable: The Economy in Crisis?
AFF will hold its monthly roundtable "The Economy in Crisis?" on March 18. While national security issues may seem to dominate the national debate, the state of the economy might be the determining issue for this year's elections. The widespread view that we are in a recession led to an economic stimulus bill few free-market advocates supported. Is extra stimulus needed to avoid the potentially imminent recession? When it comes to promoting economic growth, the primary conservative solution is to cut taxes. What other free-market policy solutions are there to bring prosperity to the country?

AFF DC Happy Hour: Party on the Patio!
AFF's next monthly happy hour will take place on Wednesday, March 26th, at the Local 16 on U Street. To celebrate spring we will be out on the patio! On Thursday, February 28^th AFF will host its monthly happy hour in Arlington, VA from 6:00-8:00 pm. AFF will be celebrating the release of CEI scholar Eli Lehrer's paper on product bans which draws attention to five product bans including Sangria in Virginia. Also joining the toast to theses bans are Valerie Bayham of the Institute for Justice and Sam Kazman of the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

AFF DC March Roundtable: Energy Policy, What Should Our Carbon Footprint Be?
AFF will hold its monthly roundtable "Energy Policy, What Should Our Carbon Footprint Be?" on March 18. All across the United States technology is lowering the carbon footprint of the energy consuming products we use every day, such as cars, phones, and computers. Despite the savings, the Department of Energy predicts that fossil fuels will remain a prime source of energy consumption well into the future. Certain critics complain that fossil fuel consumption is a leading causes of climate change, and each person has a duty to limit their carbon footprint for the environment. Should we take an active role in limiting our personal carbon footprint? Will technological improvements eventually reduce our carbon footrprint for us? As the rest of the developing world consumes more oil, gas, and coal, does the U.S. have any moral obligation to risk falling behind economically in order to have a smaller carbon footprint?

AFF DC February Roundtable: Is Marriage Outdated?
AFF will hold its monthly roundtable on Tuesday, February 12th. In the spirit of Valentines Day, we will consider the question of marriage. Is it outdated? Or, should we care about preserving the institution now more than ever?

Joining us will be James Poulos, Eve Tushnet, and Jonathan Rauch, author of Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America. Also joining us will be Jamie Alan Aycock, a lawyer in Washington, D.C. and recent author of "Contracting out of the Culture Wars: How the Law Should Enforce and Communities of Faith Should Encourage More Enduring Marital Commitments" in the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy.
