IN THIS ISSUE: JULY ROUNDTABLE | AFF ON THE ROAD MINNESOTA | INSIDE WASHINGTON WEEKLY | YOUR DREAM JOB

AFF July Roundtable: Conservatives and the Academy
The dysfunctional state of the Academy has been well known to conservatives since William F. Buckley published God and Man at Yale 50 years ago. Once the Baby Boomer generation started getting tenure, the situation only got worse. The Right has largely ceded control of higher education to the Left, with a few exceptions. Some conservatives attend an openly conservative college to ensure a proper education. Is this a sound strategy, or is a more systematic approach needed? Can we afford to abandon the Academy?

This month's roundtable will be held Thursday, July 17th in the Heldref Publications Building, 1319 Eighteenth Street NW, in the Reid Ballroom. As usual it entry is free for members and $5 for non-members, so become a member today! Please RSVP to Cindy@americasfuture.org.

"AFF on the Road" next stop: Minneapolis, Minnesota! On Thursday, July 24th America's Future Foundation will host "The Pre-convention Debate: Has the GOP gotten the message?" just a few short months before the Republican convention.

Coming off special election losses and into its convention, has the GOP gotten the message? Conservatives and libertarians have demanded that Republicans live up to their limited government principles. And yet, many Republicans in Congress voted for further increases in spending in the recent 2008 Farm Bill. At the convention, does McCain and the GOP leadership have what it takes to pull the party together around a program of limited government? Or, are the concerns of the conservative and libertarian "base" irrelevant as Obama and McCain vie for independent-minded swing voters? Join America's Future Foundation to find out.

Joining us for this conversation is Jeff Larson, CEO of the Minneapolis St. Paul 2008 Host Committee for the 2008 Republican convention and founding partner of Feather, Larson & Synhorst and Ryan Sager, author of "Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians and the Battle to Control the Republican Party". Check out Room 101 next week for location and other panelist.

Please sent this out to your friends/colleagues in St.Paul/Minneapolis and RSVP to Kathleen@americasfuture.org.

And as an incentive, one lucky survey respondent will win a brand new 3G iPhone, courtesy of our friends at AT&T! Yes, one of those harder, better, faster, stronger iPhones that hasn't been released yet. Why stand in line at the Apple store, when you can snag one through AFF?

Here's the deal: you will receive an e-mail from AFF survey director Kristen Soltis this afternoon with a special link to the survey. Follow the link, fill out the survey, and win a chance at the 3G iPhone! But do it right away, because the survey closes in a week.

IN THIS ISSUE: MAY ROUNDTABLE | DOUBLETHINK LAUNCH PARTY | BECOME A TFAS MENTOR | YOUR DREAM JOB

DC May Roundtable: “Why Don’t You Get a Real Job?"
We’ve all heard the dreaded question at some point in our liberty-advancing careers: Why don’t you get a real job? Usually it comes from a well-intentioned family member-maybe even your mom. Perhaps they are concerned about your ability to make a living working at a non-profit organization. “All that Ramen can’t be healthy,” they say. “The private sector pays much better.” What is the best way to respond? Is it possible to make a long-term, successful career out of fighting for liberty, or are we better off putting in our time in the movement then departing to find “real” (i.e. private sector) employment? Are people who go for-profit “sell-outs” and, if so, is selling out inevitable?

Join AFF on May 14th to find out! Joining us in this discussion will be Claire Kittle, program officer for talent development at the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation; Dan Butler, director of development at the Institute for Humane Studies/The Mercatus Center; Kent Lassman, Vice President DCI Group; and Brandie Davis of Phillip Morris International. Chaz Cirame will moderate.

The event will take place on May 14th at the Fund for American Studies, 1706 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, near Dupont Circle. Drinks at 6:30; Roundtable begins at 7:00. Roundtables are free for members, $5 for non-members. So join today! Please RSVP to Cindy Cerquitella at cindy@americasfuture.org.

AFF DC March Roundtable: The Economy in Crisis?
AFF will hold its monthly roundtable "The Economy in Crisis?" on March 18. While national security issues may seem to dominate the national debate, the state of the economy might be the determining issue for this year's elections. The widespread view that we are in a recession led to an economic stimulus bill few free-market advocates supported. Is extra stimulus needed to avoid the potentially imminent recession? When it comes to promoting economic growth, the primary conservative solution is to cut taxes. What other free-market policy solutions are there to bring prosperity to the country?

The event will take place at the Fund for American Studies, 1706 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, near Dupont Circle. Drinks at 6:30; Roundtable begins at 7:00. Roundtables are free for members, $5 for non-members. So join today! Please RSVP to Cindy Cerquitella at cindy@americasfuture.org.

AFF DC Happy Hour: Party on the Patio!
AFF's next monthly happy hour will take place on Wednesday, March 26th, at the Local 16 on U Street. To celebrate spring we will be out on the patio! The address is 1602 U Street NW, Washington DC and the nearest Metro stop is U Street on the Green Line. Please note: we'll be out on the outdoor deck. Just look for AFF members wearing little orange AFF lapel pins. As always, there is no cover and there are beer, wine, and rail drink specials from 6 to 9 pm.

AFF Denver: How the West will Be Lost
On Wednesday, March 26, 2008, AFF goes to Denver for its next installment of AFF on the Road! It's no mistake that Democrats will be hosting their national convention in Denver. Liberal funders have invested heavily in Colorado as part of a multi-cycle strategy to turn traditionally red states in the mountain west blue. But have Republicans and the Religious Right put more libertarian-leaning mountain states up for grabs? Looking at the primaries, does Huckabee's success indicate the growing or waning influence of evangelicals in the Republican Party? Does Ron Paul's fundraising success indicating a growing influence of libertarians? And what to make of McCain? Join our panelists as we discuss the future of libertarians, conservatives, and evangelicals in the West.

Featuring Jon Caldara, president, Independence Institute; Jim Pfaff, president, Colorado Family Council Ryan Sager, author, Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians and the Battle to Control the Republican Party; Gene Healy, senior editor at the Cato Institute and author, Cult of the Presidency: America's Dangerous Devotion to Executive Power

Coming Soon: Doublethink Online
A note from Peter Suderman, Editor, Doublethink Online:
Many of you have asked, "What's the deal with Brainwash?" There hasn't been much activity these last few months. Well, we're pleased to announce that in a few short weeks, Brainwash will be relaunched as Doublethink Online.

As with Brainwash, you'll find regular articles from the best and brightest young writers on the right. But in the new Doublethink Online, you'll find more content, a small but sharp stable of bloggers and columnists, greater integration with AFF's other web features, Washington Planner and Inside Washington Weekly, as well as with our quarterly parent print publication, Doublethink, and lots more.

It all starts soon, so keep checking back, as more announcements are on their way. We think you'll agree that it will be worth the wait. Thanks for your patience!

Leadership dinner SOLD OUT!
On Wednesday, March 12, AFF will present the next installment of its Leadership Dinner Series, featuring journalist Robert Novak, author of Prince of Darkness, a memoir of his life as a political journalist and pundit in Washington, D.C. Mr. Novak will share valuable advice on how to make a career out of writing, imparts his ideals, and discloses inestimable guidance on how to make the greatest impact as a public speaker.

NOTE: Registration for this event is now closed, if you have any questions please e-mail cindy@americasfuture.org.

NOTE: The Roundtable previously seen in Room 101 for March "Energy Policy, What Should Our Carbon Footprint Be?" will be held April 15.

NOTE: The Roundtable previously seen in Room 101 for March "Energy Policy, What Should Our Carbon Footprint Be?" will be held April 15.

Doublethink Launch Party
