Takers Takes the Number 1 Spot

Idris Elba, TI, Chris Breezy and the rest of the crew have much to celebrate – despite opening in less theaters, the cast of Takers edged out their competition to take the #1 spot in the Box Office Opening Weekend. Big things indeed.

As MTV reports: While early estimates had “The Last Exorcism” edging out “Takers” at the box office this weekend, T.I. says not so fast. According to a recalculated tally on BoxOfficeMojo.com, his heist film, also starring Idris Elba and Chris Brown, came out on top, grossing $20.5 million vs. the horror movie’s $20.3 million.

“It was so tight, they kinda misinformed people prematurely and gave out the wrong information,” Tip said about the initial numbers. “But officially, as it stands right now, ‘Takers’ is the #1 movie in the country, contrary to popular belief. In my heart, I felt it would be.

Big congratulations to the guys and all those who worked on set to make the movie happen. Looking forward to the pre-qual TI says is already in the works. Check out the Trailer below:

So today is a special day. Yours truly is another year older!! Woot for birthdays!

I won’t tell you how old I am, (although my mom has already put me ON BLAST via facebook), but I will say, I’m so grateful, thankful and blessed to see today. There are too many others who weren’t so fortunate. It’s only right thanks be given. So – THANK YOU GOD!! What kind of blogger takes so long in between posts? As they say in Yoruba – “ko serious” (you’re not serious).

I’ll spare you all the bs excuses and just say my b. Last couple of months have been a bit bananas. Graduated (!), hung out in the greatest state ever (New Jersey), moved, etc. Settled now though. So afiivē commences.

Before going back to regularly scheduled business – I should let you in on some fab news. The afiivē team has just doubled – Toushi Itoka Murray aka the dondatta of dondattas has come on board. She’s amazing and will be doing loads, both behind the scenes and on the site. She’s on vacay currently but as soon as she returns, she’ll introduce herself to you personally.

Got a new Good Stuff piece for afiiveland today. Came across the site for the fab magazine Pop’Africana. Loving what it is and represents: A magazine dedicated to delivering a rejuvenated image of Africa and Africans in the Diaspora and a robust and educative guide documenting the endeavors and achievements of Africans, home and abroad.”

The site is edited by Oroma Elewa, a photographer, and from the looks of the blog, an avid traveler with distinctive style. Enjoying Pop’Africana’s posts and pics so far. President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the Super Eagles from playing soccer for two years due to their poor play in the 2010 World Cup. The Eagles left the first match with their heads high but had it not been for the GK, that Argentina game could have been disastrous. Maradonna might have run on the field and kicked one in himself.

Even though folks are citing, “global embarrassment,” as the reason, there are legit charges behind the suspension. Apparently, there has been mismanagement of team funds and allegations of corruption. Although its not funny, it sort of is comical…the President basically said: “Go sit down. Don’t even think about soccer for two years, my friends…nonesensseee (with the hiss).” smh

In all seriousness though – the suspension means no Cup of Africa in 2012, which could hurt World Cup 2014 prospects. So what do you think? Was the suspension a right move? Unnecessary? Speak on it in the comments section below.

It’s been a whole year since his passing so of course we had to commemorate MJ with something special, afriStyle. Started looking around and found a fab vignette of the man himself on his 1992 trip to Africa. His first stop was Gabon, where he was met by 100,000 people! And while in the Ivory Coast, he was made a king. Love it..some continents give people pens for coming to visit, Africa gives you a crown. Click to check the footage:

Ebony magazine did an interview with MJ after his trip back. Here’s a snippet -

EBONY/JET: Do you have any special feeling about this return to the continent of Africa?

MICHAEL JACKSON: For me, it’s like the “dawn of civilization.” It’s the first place where society existed. It’s seen a lot of love. I guess there’s that connection because it is the root of all rhythm. Everything. It’s home.

EBONY/JET: You visited Africa in 1974. Can you compare and contrast the two visits?

MICHAEL JACKSON: I’m more aware of things this time: the people and how they live and their government. But for me, I’m more aware of the rhythms and the music and the people. That’s what I’m really noticing more than any thing. The rhythms are incredible. You can tell especially the way the children move. Even the little babies, when they hear the drums, they start to move. The rhythm, the way it affects their soul and they start to move. The same thing that Blacks have in America. . .

:: Loudly playing Shakira’s Waka Waka World Cup Song in the background :: The World cup has been everything from amazing and historic, disappointing and near-stroke inducing. Africa started off strong with South Africa’s draw with Mexico but the last nation standing isn’t the Cup’s host. It’s West Africa’s Golden Child, Ghana. Despite the loss to Germany today, the team is heading into the round of 16, to play USA on June 26th.

Below is a quick summary of how the six african nations – South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Algeria and Ghana – have done so far in the games:

South Africa; Group A

1 W (vs. France)
1 L (vs. Uruguay)
1 D (vs. Mexico)

Had 4 points to tie with Mexico, but had 3 more goals against, compared to Mexico so ousted from a top 2 spot. Uruguay and Mexico are going to the Round of 16.

Nigeria, Group B
0 W
2 L (vs. Argentina, Greece)
1 D (vs. Korea)

Only 1 point. Thankfully Naija’s GK saved the Eagles from what could have been a very embarrassing blowout against Argentina. Naija’s out on account of too much pounded yam. Argentina and Korea moving forward.

Algeria; Group C

2 L (vs. Slovenia, USA)
1 D (vs. England)

Another 1 pointer. US & England moving forward.

Ghana; Group D

1 W (vs. Serbia)
1 D (vs. Australia)
