“So, in terms of what we’re doing in Crysis 3, this is the closure to this sort of story bubble. But if you look at the past five years, and what we’ve done with the franchise, you could probably come up and say that we have basically built a Crysis Universe. And we could go in so many different ways in this franchise at this point, and weave in alternate storylines from different tech, to different realities and things like that. So moving past Crysis 3, we have a lot of opportunities moving forward outside of this,” he revealed.

Battle.net had hinted at plans for a name-changing service — for a fee — in StarCraft II some time ago but it never materialised. With the paid name-change option deprioritized and unlikely to happen anytime soon, Battle.net is saying sorry by giving everyone a free name-change.

“The fact that we didn’t keep you updated when we deprioritised the feature was a mistake, and we aim to do a much better job of keeping you informed in the future,” The StarCraft II team said in an official blog post yesterday.

Originally they’d intended to offer a paid name-changing service. But few used a free name change that was initially offered and that, coupled with the introduction of Battle Tags and the need to integrate them with character names, “and our increasing focus on completing StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm,” led the paid name change service to be placed on the back-back burner.

While Xbox 360 players have been slaying zombies in Black Ops 2′s Nuketown, PS3 and PC users have been left in the lurch to wait fot their turn. This isn’t all that surprising given Activision and Microsoft’s timed-exclusivity agreement when it comes to Call of Duty content.

In the official Call of Duty Facebook page, Activision has revealed that Nuketown Zombies for the PS3 and PC will be out on January 17 and it will even come with an exclusive in-game calling card, too. Keep in mind, though, it will still only be available for Season Pass holders. For now, we have no clue if Activision will release it as a separate paid content sometime in the future.

Before the game begins, players build a player character in accordance with the character creation rules of Dungeons & Dragons, which includes selecting a race and class, then assigning skill points.There are 12 classes available, including the rogue and the wizard. Neverwinter Nights 2 makes use of the d20 system seen in Dungeons & Dragons,where a “die roll” or random number is used to determine the probability and effectiveness of every action, including attacks and saving throws. The player character may gain the assistance of up to four or more party members, who can be controlled directly by the player or given orders dictating how to behave in combat.

New Zealand based independent developer Grinding Gear Games announced back in December that the Path of Exile Open Beta was being targeted for a January 23rd release, and it looks like all systems are go as the time draws near for the game to begin the final steps towards launch. The much anticipated action-rpg has been in closed beta testing since August of 2011, and most reviews of the closed beta version of the game have been positive. The open beta event will be preceded by a final character wipe for players who have participated in the closed beta.  Along with the launch of the Path of Exile open beta will be the unveiling of Act 3, which is a new area that even closed beta testers have yet to see.

Players interested in getting into the game now can still do so by purchasing one of the starter packs for as little as $10.  These packs directly support the development of the game, and I haven’t heard a single person who purchased one of the starter packs say that it wasn’t worth it.  Once Path of Exile is in open beta it will be free to download and play, and Grinding Gear does not intend to charge for access to content.  The starter packs are just a way for those who wish to support the game to do so, and none of the rewards from the packs can be considered “pay-to-win”.

We love games like Dota 2, League of Legends, and Smite, but the myriad skills needed to master their complex gameplay can scare new players away. That’s why we occasionally pick a key skill and teach you how to master it, using a character that particularly excels at or relies on that skill in-game.

We’ve activated League of Legends expert and former Senior Editor Josh Augustine to tackle the science (and art) of wards—the consumable items that you drop to illuminate LoL’s ever-present fog of war. No one is better at warding the map than the little scout Teemo, who can toss down his own sight-granting mushrooms in addition to ordinary wards.

The skill — Warding

The scariest thing in games like League of Legends and Dota 2 is not knowing where your opponents are. If you can’t see them, they have the huge advantage of being able to choose the time and place that they engage your team. Wards are the solution: placing them in key locations throughout the map can give your entire team the ability to not only predict incoming ganks and escape them, but also to monitor enemy movement and pick out the best times to be aggressive.

In LoL, warding the map is usually considered the job of the the support player or jungler, who already spend their time and gold helping their teammates. But anyone can do it and you probably should if your teammates aren’t.

Funcom axed the subscription requirement for its supernatural survival-horror MMO The Secret World back in December, adopting a buy-to-play model that opened the game’s content for all after a soul sacrifice to The Old Ones buying a download. It seems like it worked: in an investor notice published yesterday, Funcom noted The Secret World’s “activity levels” rose 400 percent as a result of the model change.

The developer claimed “original players have returned to join thousands of new players” and that The Secret World sold more than 70,000 units since going subscription-free. I’m not exactly sure what “activity levels” translates to, but assuming Funcom isn’t referring to recording how many times someone jumps in Kingsmouth, it’s probably a measurement of player counts across each server.

EVE and Dust 514 players can now push for galactic conquest together. CCP has finished the merging of DUST 514 players and EVE players onto one single server called Tranquility.  This is a major stepping stone in the DUST 514 development cycle and may indicate that release is not too far off. While this merge moves development ahead though, it is not quite fully implemented.

At this time, DUST 514 players are able to call out to EVE players and have them rain down a fiery destruction through orbital bombardments, but infantry on the ground still do not have the ability to fire back on orbiting ships. The current build also requires EVE players to have been called upon to act by DUST 514 players. This keeps EVE players from randomly firing death down on any planet they feel needs to have a little chaos dropped onto it.

It has been an interesting development cycle for DUST 514 as gamers have been waiting to see exactly the “hows” (and even the “whys”) of the single server for two games would work. CCP has posted an extensive FAQ here detailing just what both sets of gamers stand to gain from faction cooperation. From their answers it seems that DUST 514 player actions could have quite the impact on some of the EVE player benefits. CCP even included details on this very topic as an answer to the FAQ “Why should I care?”:

The developer announced in December that 100 per cent of the cash raised through sales of the Cinder Kitten pet until December 31 would be donated to the American Red Cross in support of its Sandy relief efforts following the disaster in October.

Sales of the kitten, which costs $10, totaled $2.3 million before the cutoff point. Blizzard has thanked those who offered their support.
