But I’ve decided that just because I’m not barrel racing, it doesn’t mean I can’t wear cowboy boots (or cowgirl boots, depending on who you ask). If anything, it’s a nod to how I was raised, which I’m quite proud of. So the trick has been finding outfits with cowboy boots that feel like me: polished, a little unexpected, and flattering.

I feel like summer is the perfect time to try cowboy boots. If you’re headed to a rodeo, demolition derby, or country concert, you need a outfit with cowboy boots that doesn’t feel like a costume. The obvious outfit ideas with cowboy boots (or cowgirl boots) are pairing them with flare, bootcut, or wide-leg jeans. But we can do better! Here are the ways I wear cowboy boots that don’t feel overly western, but instead, feel modern and more my style.

1. With a Maxi or Midi Dress

Of all the options, this one is the most expected with cowboy boots, so to me it’s the least intimidating place to start. It can lean into western with a cowboy hat if you’re headed to a rodeo, or it can feel totally unique with a midi dress and no hat at all. The Everett Linen Dress is a good example of the latter. It’s so clearly not a western dress so the boots feel like a surprise rather than a theme. You can take nearly any midi dress you love and just add boots.

2. With Denim Shorts

This could easily feel cheesy or a little too young. (I’m 41, so I’m not pairing with short shorts.) For me to pull off this style, I had to find a way to balance the exposed leg with a little more coverage up top. These Abercrombie Dad shorts are my very favorite for denim shorts. I think the white with the brown leather cowboy boots feel even more unexpected than your traditional blue denim. I especially like this look paired with a button-up, but anything that gives more coverage up top would achieve the same effect. Think an oversized sweater, blazer, or even a jacket or cropped trench.

3. With Satin Shorts

This might be the most unexpected pairing and perhaps my favorite lately. Satin shorts are a trend I couldn’t get behind for a while because they just looked like lingerie. But now that I’ve seen them styled in a way that feels more like me — with a blazer, an oversized sweater, or an oversized shirt — and less feminine and lingerie-ish, I like them a lot. And pairing them with cowboy boots makes them feel even more unexpected and lends a slightly masculine feel that I really like.

4. With a Mini Dress

This can easily lean cliched cowboy if you pair boots with a denim dress, so I prefer it with a white mini dress or a blue dress that’s not denim and has a little bit of intentional detail, like buttons. A blazer or trench coat is probably the last thing you’d think to pair with cowboy boots, but it’s a surprisingly fun combo. The oversized fit does the same thing as the sweater or white tee. It balances the boot without competing with it, and there’s something about the blazer specifically that makes the whole look feel more city than country, which is what I’m going for. And if you want to be even more casual, a baseball hat with this combination adds to the vibe.

6. With Linen Shorts and a Sweater

This is another option that’s simple to style, especially since it uses pieces you likely already have in your closet. I like this best with a monochrome pairing that lets the boots shine. It’s relaxed without being sloppy, and the boots turn what would otherwise be a pretty basic summer outfit into something that feels put together. Tan linen shorts with a cream or camel sweater is the version I want to try next.

Accessories for Cowboy Boot Outfits

When you’re finishing off your cowgirl boot outfits, accessories are really fun to think about. You can go all in on western accessories (think brown tones, turquoise, anything that compliments the boot) or you can go totally classic with the gold or silver pieces you already wear with everything else. Both work, and the classic route is what I find myself doing most.

FAQ

What jeans look good with cowboy boots, and do you tuck them in?

I don’t tuck. It tends to look bulky and reads more western than I want. What works best is a fitted or straight-leg jean that sits just over the top of the boot. It elongates the leg and keeps things looking clean. I’d skip the bootcut and wide-leg for this specifically; the whole point is to let the boot show just enough without making it the whole outfit.

Should you avoid double denim with cowboy boots?

I’d be careful. Denim on denim with boots can get very country very fast. If you love denim, stick to one piece: a denim jacket or jeans, not both.

What about a western belt — yes or no?

For me, no. A western belt with cowboy boots is a lot of western in one outfit. I skip it and let the boots be the nod to that aesthetic.

What tops look good with cowboy boots?

Anything that feels a little elevated or put-together: a blazer, an oversized button-down, a fitted knit. I’d avoid anything too frilly or puff-sleeved. It tips the whole look in a direction that’s hard to come back from.

Can you wear cowboy boots on a date or night out?

Yes, and I think this is one of the best uses for them. A midi dress or a mini dress with a little detail (buttons, a collar, something that gives it shape) with tall boots is a great date night outfit. It’s unexpected enough to feel intentional but not so trendy that it looks like…a costume. Skip the cowboy hat for a night out and let the boots do the talking.

Can you wear cowboy boots to work?

Yes, if your office allows it. A fitted trouser, a blazer, and a clean leather cowboy boot is a great combination. Stick to a boot without heavy embroidery for work and it’s an easy yes.

Then I built one. And I kind of loved it.

Taking the mirror selfies for this post was so much easier than my usual shoots. When you’re working with a limited, curated set of pieces, you’re not standing in front of your closet for 20 minutes trying to make something work. All the pieces go together. Everything felt like me.

I’ll also say this: I chose these pieces specifically for where I am right now, which is 40+. I am not interested in wearing things that don’t drape well or sit right. There’s a difference between a linen pant that gets baggy in the behind after you sit for 20 minutes and one that keeps its shape, and I would know because I’ve bought both. Every item in this capsule was chosen with that in mind. These are investment pieces. Not all of them are expensive, but they’re all things I expect to be pulling out summer after summer.

Here’s what’s in it.

The Tops

The chambray shirt

I really wanted a long-sleeve chambray for this capsule. I tried four of them. None of them worked. Either the fabric was off, the fit was wrong, or it just didn’t look right. So I landed on the Z Supply Everyday Denim Button Up in Coastal Water, which is short-sleeve. It’s not quite as versatile for layering in the way a long-sleeve would be, but it’s cute for styling and the fabric is soft but not floppy. The striped tee

I am such a sucker for anything striped, so I obviously had to include a striped shirt for the capsule. The fit is relaxed, but not too boxy, which I think is really flattering on any body type. The white tee

Non-negotiable, you must have a white tee for a summer capsule (and any capsule for that matter). The Sold Out NYC Iconically Soft Perfect Tee is the perfect fit. This was my top pick in my roundup for best white tees. The Bombas Slim Crew Neck is a great option if you want something with a little more structure.

The black and white tank

A tank is one of those things that goes with everything. Any black or white one that fits you well will do. Wear it under the chambray, the blazer, or on its own with the trouser shorts. It’s basically the cooler sibling of the white tee. That said, I’m partial to Splendid for basics like this. The quality holds up in a way that a cheap Amazon tank just doesn’t. The Classic Tank in black and white are both staples in my closet.

The oversized shirt

The Outro Oversized Poplin Shirt is the piece I throw over dresses or wear with shorts. A great, slightly oversized white shirt that looks polished is my favorite kind of top.

The Bottoms

Jean shorts

The Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean Short is mid-length, mid-rise, with a worn-in blue wash. I could live in these all summer long. You can’t have a summer capsule without a jean short as your staple.

Trouser shorts

I feel like trouser shorts are THE mom shorts, and I mean that in the best way possible. They’re cool and lightweight, comfortable, but more classy than jean shorts. Dress them up or down depending on what you’re going for. The Aritzia Effortless Short is one of my favorites. Linen pants

This is where I feel the 40+ thing most. A good pair of linen pants that fits through the hips and drapes well is worth finding. The Aritzia Sontag Linen Pant in navy is the one I landed on. It’s not stiff or boxy like some linen pants can be. It drapes well and doesn’t get saggy in the bum area. I wear linen pants with anything from a white tee to an oversized shirt or a tank, if I want casual and cool.

Skirts

Two skirts and they do very different things. The white linen maxi is the relaxed option. It’s great for beach days or just when you want something easy. I have a whole post on how to style a maxi skirt if you want to see it in action. Then there’s the Caara Vashti Skirt in cream and brown stripe. I love this one because it’s still neutral, but the brown and white stripe gives the outfit a little more personality than a solid would.

The Dresses

Three dresses, three different occasions. Dresses are the most underrated capsule item for summer. One piece, complete outfit. Plus in the heat, the less fabric touching your body the better.

The Natalee Dress is a polished midi with a fitted bodice that is so flattering with a structured waist. At first glance this dress might not seem as versatile, but I dressed it up with sandals, a clutch and an oversized shirt with Sambas and thought it looked great dressed down. I love a dress that can go both ways!

The Hill House Cosima Nap Midi Dress is perfect for a summer capsule. I resisted Hill House for years. I figured it couldn’t be that different from the dupes I saw everywhere. I was wrong. The quality and fit are on another level, and the smocking holds you in vs. sagging like cheaper versions do. I did a full Hill House Nap Dress review if you want the details before you buy.

The Hill House Angie Dress is the perfect short option. White is a neutral that works in any season, and the mini length is perfect for a hot summer outing. Since it’s short, I always recommend wearing shorts underneath so you’re not worried about an accidental flashing moment. This would also make a flawless 4th of July outfit. The Blazer

The Generation Blazer from Aritzia is a great layering option for the places blasting the AC in the summer. The PowerLinen keeps it light, and it instantly elevates a tee and shorts. Plus, it’s a piece that makes the whole capsule work for occasions that need a little extra, including those days you’re working from home but need to look presentable on a call. The Shoes

I have six shoe options across four categories to help you find the look you’re going for. You don’t need all of these, but I wanted to cover the full range of what you may want for different summer outings.

Flat sandals: The everyday shoe. You’re going to live in these — errands, lunch, the farmers market, whatever your summer looks like. The Lara Dune Leather Sandal and the Nina Sandal (which has a memory foam insole, and yes you’ll appreciate that when you’re on your feet all day) are both in my capsule. Heeled sandal: For when the occasion calls for a little more. The Mafalda Alta goes on when I’m heading somewhere that a flat sandal just won’t cut it.

The Accessories

Belts

Two belts are included, in case you want options. The Josie European Leather Braided Belt is a rich cognac brown, slightly more casual, great with jean shorts and linen pants. The TWP Narrow Belt in Cognac is a bit sleeker but still goes with anything. Both are nice pieces worth buying once and wearing for years.

Bag

This Handknotted Raffia Clutch is THE summer bag. It’s perfect for any occasion all season long. Then there’s the A. Soliani Sera Bag for evenings out or if you just want something super classy. It’s the bag that takes linen pants and a tee from daytime to dinner.

What is a summer capsule wardrobe?

A curated set of pieces that work together so you’re not standing in front of a full closet every morning wondering what to wear. It’s not about owning fewer things overall. It’s about having a core set of summer items that you can mix and layer. I resisted the whole concept for years, and I swear it’s so much simpler than I made it out to be.

How many pieces do you need in a summer capsule wardrobe?

More than the internet suggests, fewer than you think. The “10-piece capsule” articles make for a good headline, but that number doesn’t account for shoes, accessories, or the fact that you need options for different occasions. So I know a thing or two about showing up to a golf tournament and looking like you belong there.

Most people headed to a golf tournament aren’t going to Augusta. They’re going to the PGA Championship, a local charity scramble, or an outing at a nice course. The dress code for those is more relaxed, more accessible, but still a step up from your average weekend outfit.

Here’s what works, and what you can skip.

What to Wear to a Golf Tournament

Dresses

One of the things I appreciate about golf is that it’s a dressy sport. Even as a spectator, looking polished is part of the culture. A nice sundress or true golf dress is one of the easiest golf tournament outfits for ladies to put together, because it’s one piece and you’re done.

A couple of things to keep in mind: watch the length, since you’ll probably sit on the grass at some point. I always wear shorts underneath my dresses, and it makes the day so much more comfortable. Also, since most tournaments are in the heat of summer, look for cotton or linen blends that breathe well.

Everett Linen Dress

If you’re unsure, get this linen dress. Linen is one of the best fabrics for a hot summer day, and this dress is light and breathable. Pair it with white sneakers for a really clean, simple look. The one thing I’d note is you’ll probably want to take a much smaller woven bag like this, unless you want to take lots of snacks or are bringing your kiddos.

Sleeveless Cotton Polo Dress

A polo dress is one of the most golf-appropriate pieces you can put on. It’s a style that is appropriate whether you’re at a major PGA event or a local charity tournament. This one is sleeveless so you stay cool, and the polo collar makes it look intentional. Pair it with white sneakers and simple sunglasses, and you’re completely done. You can throw a light cardigan over the waist if the temperature is cooler.

If you like the look of the polo dress above, but want something a little more structured, the Tuckernuck Pique Margaret Polo Dress is it. The pique fabric gives it a really classic look, and the polo detail keeps it completely course-appropriate. Not to mention, the ruffle detail on the placket is darling. A solid pick if you want to look a little more dressed up without going overboard.

Hill House Nap Dress

If you’ve seen my blog post on the Hill House Nap Dress, you already know this had to be included for a golf tournament. You can wear the Ellie Nap Dress everywhere, and it’s ideal for a golf tournament since it’s lightweight and breezy. The maxi length is nice too, so you can sit, stand, and move around without feeling exposed. I love this one.

Note: Swap the sandals for sneakers… you’ll be MUCH more comfortable.

Atlas Dress

I included this dress as a Master’s outfit because it’s an investment, but it’s too cute not to include here, too. This is for when you want something with more personality. It’s a floral midi, so it’s more feminine and a little bolder than the polo options. Still completely appropriate for a golf tournament, just more of a statement.

This Asbury Mini Dress has the same idea, just a different length. Another great option if you want something with more personality. It’s a printed option that’s fun and flirty. Pair it with simple accessories and white sneakers, and you’re set.

Malena Striped Dress

From the same brand as the dress above, this blue stripe midi is crisp and clean. The belted feature of this dress is super classy, and the seersucker adds a fun, new texture that’s still breathable. The stripe keeps it from feeling too plain, and the silhouette is really flattering.

Sleeveless Charlie Dress

Navy, sleeveless, comfortable, and really clean. The Tuckernuck Charlie Dress is easy to style and goes with literally everything, which is why it’s one of my most-worn Tuckernuck dresses. A no-fuss option if you want something that works with almost any shoe.

Pink Peach Maxi Dress

The Pink Peach Charlotte Maxi from Tuckernuck is a good pick if you want more coverage or something in a softer color palette. The maxi length is comfortable for a long day on the course, and the pink peach color is pretty without being too bright.

Navy Chino Rhoda Mini Dress

I’m really into chino pieces this year, so once I saw this chino mini dress, I immediately bought it. This is a fun mini that’s still long enough and completely appropriate for golf events. The chino fabric keeps it from feeling too casual, and like the dress above, it pairs well with white sneakers.

Maxi Shirtdress

Another favorite of mine. No matter if you’re going to a casual golf tournament or a major PGA Tour event, this maxi shirtdress is a winner. The one-size fit is SO easy. Frank & Eileen’s pieces are worth the investment.

This dress also comes in a shorter length that’s just as classic and easy. If you already love Frank & Eileen, you know the quality. If you don’t, this is a good introduction.

Natalee Midi Dress

A pretty white and blue striped midi that would be stunning at an outdoor summer tournament. The silhouette is softer than the shirtdress options, so it has a more romantic feel, especially with its A-line cut. You could just as easily pair this with white sneakers and sandals as you could a block or kitten heel (off the course, obviously).

Striped Pleated Midi Shirtdress

I got this pleated striped dress in green last year and have seen it pop up in lots of different colors. I found it in a blue stripe color, which is beautiful, and I can’t recommend it enough for a dress you’ll feel good in all day at a golf tournament. The pleated detail makes the dress in my opinion, and it’s so flattering. Throw on with a cute straw hat, and you’ll be best dressed for sure!

Sets and Rompers

If a dress doesn’t feel like you, a matching set or romper is a great alternative golf tournament outfit. These are a couple I’m excited to wear this summer:

Stroll Skirt Set

I just got this Stroll Skirt Set from LAKE and LOVE it. It’s not only a really cute option, but extremely comfortable. The stripes keep it interesting and elevate the look so it’s not too casual.

Gingham Romper

A romper is a hack in my opinion. One piece, zero fuss, inherently polished, and one of the most comfortable things you can wear for a full day of walking the course. The green and white gingham version is both flattering and practical. Pair with white sneakers and even throw on a wide-brimmed straw hat like this.

Separates

If you want to mix and match, the Crochet Sleeveless Top with the C’est Tout Skort is such a good combo. The skort is the move for a golf tournament and I feel pretty confident saying that. It looks like a skirt, functions like shorts, and you never have to think twice about sitting down or a gust of wind.

For shorts, the Navy Ruth Shorts, Quince Stretch Crepe Pleated Shorts, and Heritage Chino Shorts are all appropriate options. Pair any of them with a collared or structured top and you’ve got a clean, golf-ready look.

White Jeans and a Blouse

If you’re going to a tournament on a cooler day, white jeans are a completely appropriate golf tournament outfit. Blue jeans are generally not golf-appropriate, but white jeans are an exception that works really well.

The white jeans I love most are Levi’s, and fit true to size, but I have to give an honorable mention to these white Paige jeans since they’re the perfect white and so flattering. (I have a full white jeans review if you want more details.) Pair with something lightweight and collared on top, and you’ve got a really polished look.

True Golf Attire

Some women go full golf attire as a spectator, and it looks great. A skort with a collared top tucked in is completely appropriate and honestly one of the most comfortable options for a long day on the course. If this is more your style, I have a whole post on cute women’s golf clothes.

Sneakers

The first thing my father-in-law said when he saw my outfit for my first Master’s was: “Sandals are a rookie mistake.” He was right. You will walk and stand for hours, and you need shoes that can handle that.

My VEJA sneakers are my go-to since they’re already broken in. If you’re buying new sneakers specifically for the tournament, break them in before you go. Or, if you want to opt for something a little sportier, go with Adidas Sambas. Both sneakers are some of my favorites to wear with dresses.

Sneakers. Always.

Hats

You’ll be outside all day, so bring a hat even if you don’t think you’ll wear it the whole time. Some women go for a dressier sun hat like this crochet option from Tuckernuck or this wide-brim hat. I usually prefer a more traditional golf hat. This non-branded hat from Chord is a really clean option that doesn’t feel too sporty or too fussy.

Sunglasses

Practical and a good accessory. I wore my Le Specs Bandwagon sunglasses and loved them for a full day on the course. Any sunglasses you love will work since you’ll have them on most of the day anyway.

Bag

Most golf tournaments have a small bag policy, so check the size requirements before you arrive. At Augusta, bags must be 10″ x 10″ x 12″ or smaller. A small crossbody is the safest and most practical choice. You really only need sunscreen, your phone, a card, and maybe a lip gloss.

For spring and summer, a straw bag is perfectly appropriate. I put together a full round-up of my favorite straw and raffia bags here. If the event requires a clear bag, here are my favorite stadium-approved clear crossbody options.

Sunscreen

Throw a small bottle in your bag. I didn’t bring any to my first Master’s and ended up with a terrible sunburn. I swear it ruined the second half of the day.

The OS-01 FACE SPF 30+ is my favorite face SPF. It applies perfectly under makeup, blends in without leaving any white cast, and feels great on my skin all day. I’ve tried a lot of sunscreen and this is the one I keep coming back to.

What to Skip for a Golf Tournament

Sandals or heels. I watched a woman fall in wedges and another walking barefoot at the end of the day carrying her sandals. You don’t want to be either of those people. Wear sneakers.

Anything too short or too casual. Golf tournaments are dressy sporting events. Think more football game energy, but elevated. Athletic shorts, crop tops, and flip flops are all no.

Your own food and drinks. The food at most golf tournaments is really good, so you won’t need them anyway.

A stroller, if you’re attending the Masters or PGA Championship. Both prohibit them. Good excuse for an adults-only trip.

A camera, depending on the event. Cameras are only allowed on certain days at some tournaments, including the Masters and the PGA Championship, so check before you go.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you’re headed to a major PGA Tour event or a local charity tournament, the formula for a golf tournament outfit for females is the same every time. Polish and comfort in equal parts, sneakers always, a hat you’ll actually wear, and sunscreen in your bag.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is competitive—things sell out fast, and popular sizes go quickly. These tips will help you shop strategically so you don’t miss out on the pieces you really want:

1. Join The Nordy Club (It’s Free!)

If you haven’t already, join the Nordy Club—it’s totally free, earns you Nordstrom Notes (aka store credit), and gets you free shipping. This is separate from the Nordstrom Credit Card.

2. Become a Nordstrom Cardholder (If It Makes Sense for You)

Cardholders get early access, and how much you spend each year determines just how early. Even the basic card level lets you shop before the general public, which can make a huge difference. I only recommend the credit card if you’re a regular Nordstrom shopper and it’s a good fit for your budget.

3. Bookmark the Sale Preview + Build Your Wishlist Early

As soon as the preview drops on July 6, start saving your favorites in your wishlist—by size and color. This lets you check out quickly when your access window opens and also increases your chances of snagging restocks.

What will sell out first?

When the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale opens, the best items always go fast—so it’s smart to start with the staples that always sell out early. These are typically what go first:

• designer jeans
• everyday boots
• closet basics (simple tees, sweaters, etc.)
• sneakers
• Doona

I would also prioritize investment items you’ve been eyeing and thinking about buying, like the Nuna Car Seat, Doona, UppaBaby Stroller or Zwilling Knives. Then loop back for fun seasonal finds.

Should I Become a Nordstrom Cardholder?

Great question. It’s not a deal breaker not to be a Nordstrom cardholder, especially since the sale does become public, but I’ve been a cardholder for years, and I love it. I will say that there are a lot of cardholders and there are lots of pieces that sell out during the Early Access Sale.

If you have your eyes on specific pieces AND you shop with Nordstrom regularly, it’s definitely something to consider (with my background in finance, I’m not one to casually recommend that you open a bunch of credit cards; in fact, this is the only brand-specific credit card I have). But, if you’ve never shopped the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale before, maybe see what it’s like this year before opening a card.

Whether you get a card or not, be sure to create an account to join the Nordy Club, so you can earn points. Then, you can do a double point day whenever you place your biggest order to maximize the Nordy Cash you’ll earn. The Nordy Club is free and not a credit card – just a rewards program.

Why is Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale Such a Big Deal?

The Anniversary Sale happens once a year, and it’s different than most sales that stores promote. When a store has a sale, it’s typically to get rid of last season’s clothes as the new ones come in, and generally after the sale, things will go on final sale to make sure they get out the door. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale discounts brand new styles for the fall season. And once the sale is over, the prices go right back up to the normal retail value. It’s essentially a pre-season sale. So, you’ll notice a lot of my picks are fall styles.

I typically shop for designer denim, shoes, fall booties, high quality coats and jackets. I also shop for my husband during this sale because (a) he hates shopping and (b) the men’s stuff in the sale is typically pretty good. This sale is the best for brands he loves like Peter Millar, On, Barbour and more.

They also discount baby and kids items that are usually impossible to find on sale, like the Doona, the UppaBaby Vista Stroller, and the Nuna Rava Convertible carseat (I own and love all of those).

Do I need a promo code?

Nope—Nordstrom Anniversary Sale prices are already marked down, so there’s no need (or way) to enter a promo code at checkout. The discounts are built right into the price of the items, online and in-store—just add to cart and go!

Will there be restocks?

Yes—but don’t count on restocks on everything. What tends to restock most are basic or widely stocked Nordstrom-brand pieces. Popular and limited-release items (like designer goods) sometimes stay sold out. Still, returns from shoppers—especially on size-specific purchases—can show up throughout the sale. Two smart tips:

• Make sure your wishlist is created before the sale starts. You’ll only get restock alerts if something is on your wishlist and you can’t add it to your wishlist once it’s out of stock.
• Use the Nordstrom app notifications for automatic alerts on restocks.
• Use the LTK app for restock alerts and price drops. Even after the sale ends, if something you’ve hearted in the LTK app goes on sale, you’ll get an alert. Here are more tips specific to the LTK app.

What is the Return Policy?

One of the reasons that I’m so loyal to Nordstrom is their return policy. They send a free shipping return label in every one of their packages so that you can repack your items and pop them back into the mail easily. No questions asked. It’s almost better than shopping in person because there’s no pressure and you can try your items on in your own home (although I DO really want a Nordstrom location in Winston-Salem)!!

So, the return policy alone is enough of a reason to shop at Nordstrom.  This sale is on new pieces, and nothing is final sale, so you can return anything you don’t love.

What was included in the Nordstrom Sale last year

There were over 5,000 items included in Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, so it can be a bit overwhelming to shop. Below are my top picks from shopping in person, along with other things I plan to buy that they didn’t have in the store.

I put the categories that have the best selection first – tops & sweaters, dresses, shoes and kids. It tapers off from there, but there are still gems in every category.

Tops & Sweaters

The tops section of the Nordstrom Sale was surprisingly good this year! Here’s what I bought today.

• Frank & Eileen Rleaxed Button Up – the most perfect button-up ever. You can’t go wrong with anything F&E – it’s one of my favorite brands ever (read my Frank & Eileen review here). Runs large. I got an XS. See it on me here.
• Frank & Eileen roll-neck sweater – I own this in cream and love this striped version. Runs large. I got an XS. Wearing this sweater here.
• Frame The Pointelle Wool & Cashmere Cardigan – I love when a top has special detailing that makes it better than basic. This fit beautifully and felt special vs. a simple cardigan. See the XS on me here.
• Norah Contrast Cardigan – I absolutely loved the detailing down the front, which makes it super slimming too. I’m wearing it here.
• Veronica Beard Stripe Rib Polo – I tried on a lot of polo tops and this one was my favorite since the others were cut a little too deep. Here’s how I styled it.
• Frame Striped T-Shirt – Perfect fit, classic shirt, a great investment for my closet. Runs very small. I went up to a medium. See it on me here.
• Shaker Short Cardigan – This affordable cardigan will get a lot of wear, layered over a white tee, over my shoulders or just buttoned up and worn on its own. Wearing this cardigan here.
• Open Edit Luxe Sculpt Rib Sweater Tank – Every year they have a tank that I love so much that I buy it in every color. This is this year’s! I bought all three colors. The neckline is so flattering and it’ll be cute with jeans, skirts, under blazers, worn casually or to work. Runs small – size up. See it on here.

Dresses

Last year’s dress selection was rough—nothing really stood out—but this year is a different story. There are so many good options, and I came home with a few I love and was very torn on a few others. Here’s what I bought:

• Veronica Beard Puff sleeve-belted denim shirtdress – Gorgeous. TTS, but I sized up to a small because the XS was a little tight in the chest. See my try-on for this dress here.
• Frame Banded Jersey Dress – This was so much better in person. I wasn’t even going to try it on considering the price and because it just looked meh, but I loved it as soon as I put it on. TTS – I got an XS. See how I styled this dress here.
• Steve Madden Lace Maxi Dress – If you have a fall wedding or trips to the mountains with a date night in the mix, this is the dress to get. So flattering and comfortable. TTS – I got an XS. Wearing this dress here.
• Polo Sweater Midi Dress – This was the very first thing I tried on because I was so excited about it. I wanted to try an XS but they didn’t have it, so I got the small and I actually think it’s perfect since too tight in this style would be less flattering. See it on me here.

They didn’t have these in store so I plan to order them.

• Mini polo sweater dress – so cute for business casual or mom life.
• Poplin belted shirtdress – splurge but that style is timeless and that brand typically fits like a dream

Women’s Shoes

This year’s shoe selection is so much better than last year!!! There are lots of great boots but the flats are just so so. Be sure to save the ones you want in your size to your wishlist so you can check out right away since shoes sell out FAST. I’m typically a 6.5 or 7 and noted the sizes I got in everything.

Here’s what I bought:

• Sam Edelman tall boots – I got a size 7, in the wide calf. Shockingly comfortable and a timeless boot. See these on me here.
• Veronica Beard sneaker mules – I got a size 6.5. Shockingly SO comfortable. I’m wearing these here!
• Steve Madden Pointed Mule – So beautiful in person! A perfect work shoe. I got a 7 in brown suede. See them on here.
• New Balance 530s – I got a 7 and they were a little loose but the 6.5 was a tiny bit too tight so I erred on the size of bigger. Wearing here.
• Veronica Beard Black Booties – I got a size 7.
• Margaux Downtown Boot – EEEK! Seriously amazing these are on sale! I got these last year and they’re pure perfection. See them on me here.

What I already own and love:

• On Cloudmonster – I own these in two colorways, as well. They’re my most comfortable walking shoes (see them on here) and they’re cute enough for athleisure. You can find cute athleisure outfit ideas here.
• Dolce Vita Slim Pointed Toe Ankle Bootie – One of my most-worn booties for years. I have the pecan suede in a 7.
• Dolce Vita Knee High Boots – These were gifted to me by Dolce Vita and I love the tie detail. So elegant. I have a size 7. See them on me here.
• New Balance 327 – I love these shoes and own them in 2 colorways already (in a size 7). I’m wearing these here.

Purses

The purses this year are actually really good. I bought this:

• Madewell Suede Shopper Tote – I missed this in the preview but loved it in person. I was torn on the brown or navy and went with navy since I have lots of brown person! A great fall mom-life purse or work tote without the designer price tag. See how I styled this purse here.

I’m ordering this:

• JW Pei Suede Clutch – I didn’t see this in the preview but love it!!! So fun for date night or quick errands. Love the longer strap too.

I already own these:

• Longchamp Large Le Pliage City Tote – I own the size down from this one, but if you need a larger-than-average bag, this is a great brand. See mine here.
• Madewell Mini Shopper Tote – I own this in leather and use it almost every single day. I’m already regretting not buying the suede too. I didn’t see it in person but my friend got it, and I was immediately jealous. It’s the perfect size bag for day-to-day. You can see this purse on me here!
• Madewell Medium Essential Leather Bucket Tote – They’ve sold this bag for multiple years in a row because it’s a classic shape and style. If you don’t have a simple leather tote, start with this one! Madewell leather is beautiful at a friendly price point. The Madewell Bucket Tote comes in a few other colors too.
• Olga Berg Woven Clutch – I own this in cream and may buy the black too if it restocks. I’m so picky about clutches, but this one is perfect. Not too dressy, not too casual, not too weird. See mine here.

I didn’t buy these after seeing them in person.

• Dolce Vita Leather Shoulder Bag – this was smaller than I was expecting so I didn’t buy it but if you want a date night bag, it’s fun.
• J.W. Pei Shoulder Tote – I own this in the mini size, and I love the shape and quality for the price. I didn’t get it because it wasn’t big enough for my laptop but it’s a great size if you don’t need to tote your computer around.

Baby & Kids

There are always great baby and toddler finds in the sale so if you’re expecting or have young kids, pay attention. The Nordstrom sale is one of the best times of year to get a pricey stroller and/or car seat on sale.

I already own all of these:

• Nuna Convertible Car Seat – we have 4 of these — Two in my car and two in Tommy’s since it transitions from the infant to toddler to forward-facing little kid phase.
• Doona Convertible Car Seat Stroller– worth every penny. If you’re on the fence – get it. I wish I’d bought mine sooner – read my Doona review here.
• UppaBaby stroller — read my review of the UppaBaby Vista stroller here.
• Thule Jogging Stroller – if you want to run with your kids, snag this while it’s on sale. I like it better than the BOB Jogging Stroller – read my Thule stroller review here.
• Nanit Bundle – We’ve used this baby monitor ever since we had Thomas and have one in each boy’s room+ one in Boone. I love being able to check on them from anywhere and the nightlight feature is great for middle-of-the-night feeds. However we don’t use all the bells and whistles with that bundle so if you want just the monitor, it’s cheaper to buy the Nanit from Amazon.
• Solly Wrap – my favorite carrier for the itty-bitty baby phase. Ahhh I miss my tiny newborns! I’m wearing the Solly Wrap here.
• BabyBjorn Mini – I got this with Charles after a friend recommended it. The Solly became difficult once he got a little bigger but the regular Bjorn carrier felt intense. I liked this from like 3-9 months and then I used the bigger Bjorn after that. See Charles in the Babybjorn here.
• WAYB Pico Forward Facing Car Seat – this was gifted to me by the brand, and I haven’t tried it, but I feel like it’ll be super helpful for visiting Boone and putting in my in-law’s car rather than moving our car seat back and forth! It’ll also be great for trips to Utah.
• Slumberpod – a must if you travel with little ones and have to share a space. It blacks out their crib so you can have the lights on and don’t need to stumble around them in the dark.
• SkipHop Activity Center – we used the older version with both boys – it was a must in our house! I like the new version better – it’s a little more aesthetically pleasing.
• Cybex Libelle Lightweight Stroller – I have this, but I do NOT like it, despite the 5-star reviews. It feels so cheap and it doesn’t sit the boys up enough. Thomas always looked so uncomfortable in it. This looks like a newer version but I still wouldn’t risk it.
• Baby Bjorn Bouncer – so much better than the giant baby swings — it’s easy to move around, collapses flat and both boys liked it better than the electric swings.

I’m just bought the DOONA Convertible Stroller Trike since they didn’t have it in the store. I regretted not buying it last year, so I’m getting it! And I bought these kids New Balance sneakers for my 4.5 year old.

Jackets & Coats

I loved the jacket and coat selection, but they didn’t have many at the store in my size. So, I’m ordering some of these… I need to narrow it down because even on sale, they’re SO pricey. But my coats definitely need a refresh since so many of mine don’t fit since having kids and, uh, it’s kind of important to be able to button or zip a coat.

Jeans

The Nordstrom denim selection didn’t blow me away this year, and in person it was even more disappointing. The colorways were mostly what I didn’t like – many leaned acid or stone wash with a brown tinge, which I don’t like. I liked the fit of a lot of things but not the colorways so I definitely plan to order jeans online since they have more options.

I only bought the Paige High Waist Wide Leg Jeans – they are absolutely gorgeous, and worth the price tag considering they’re a timeless style in a classic wash (see them on me here). They do have stretch, so I was torn between a 25 and a 26, but they only had a 26. I’m really hoping they don’t stretch out but maybe order both sizes to try if possible. (I’m going to order the 25 online to compare.)

I already own these and love them:

• FRAME trouser jeans – size up (my 26 is too tight). See these on me here.
• MOTHER Hustler Roller jeans – TTS. Size up if you’re on the fence.
• Pistola Lennon Bootcut Jeans – TTS. I have these in pink (see here), blue, and black. They are SO good. I wear a size 25 – size down if you’re on the fence.
• Madewell Perfect Wide-Leg jeans – TTS – wearing these here.
• Frame Le Slim Palazzo – TTS, maybe size up if you’re on the fence.

And I’m going to order these:

• Kut from the Kloth cuffed jeans – this brand was my favorite last year (especially since I’m postpartum) and it’s the most affordable.
• BP Low Rise Baggy Jeans – I’m pretty anti-low rise since I already lived through that in middle school, but I saw these on a friend and they were very cute. Since they’re under $50, I’m going to try them. I’ll report back.

Activewear

The activewear section was disappointing. I didn’t buy anything, mostly because the sizing didn’t quite work on me. But below is what I tried on that I think is worth buying if you’re taller than me or have a smaller chest (I’m 5’1″ with a 32D cup and things just didn’t fit quite right).

• Varley half zip – I loved this and the quality was amazing but the sleeves were too long on me.
• Navy Zella Luxe leggings – Loved the material, but they were too long in the rise on me. See here.
• Zella Tennis Dress – I absolutely LOVED this but it was too tight in the chest, even when sizing up. If you’re smaller chested, it’s SO CUTE. See my try-on here.
• Zella sweatshirt + wide-leg lounge pants – I loved the sweatshirt but the bottoms were too long in the rise. These are just as soft as my Spanx AirEssentials but a lot more affordable. If you’re on the fence in sizing, go up, especially in the pants. The waistband was pretty snug in the XS. See this set on me here.
• Zella Pleated Skort – the waistband was a little too wide on my short torso, but the skirt itself was so cute. I liked that it’s longer in the back. TTS.

I’m going to order these items they didn’t have in store to try:

• Zella high-waist shorts

I attempted to try on these Spanx leggings and couldn’t get the XS even halfway up my legs lol. They didn’t have a small for me to try, but definitely size up 1-2 sizes.

This is always one of the best categories to stock up on during the sale. I’m super picky about undergarments, and I really like the Natori bras and Chantelle underwear. They are comfortable and hold up well!

Beauty 

A couple great finds! I LOVE my T3 hair dryer and blow-out brush, and they’re both included in the sale.

Men’s Clothing

Tommy never shops, and if he does, 99.9% of what he buys is from Duckhead. But Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is a great way to refresh his closet with a few items that Duckhead doesn’t carry or to add a little variety. This year’s men’s selection looks really good. There are tons of full suits on sale, shoes, and also great dress shirts. (It’s never a bad idea to stock up on boxer briefs while they’re on sale.)

Alright, let’s jump in. I know it can be hard to find cute nursing clothes, so I hope you find something below that fits your needs and style. To be honest, every single thing I wear these days is breastfeeding friendly. And while we’re on the topic, I shared the rest of my postpartum essentials in this post.

The Best Nursing Dresses

Here’s a secret: aside from nursing tanks and bras, I never buy nursing-specific clothing. Breastfeeding-specific clothes are almost always unflattering (way too boxy), and the nursing panels aren’t particularly convenient, or they just add more bulk. Some nursing dresses have a built-in double layer over your breasts to help with leaks and modesty (i.e., bulk!), so I just make sure my nursing bras provide enough coverage. Instead, I look for button-front dresses, smocking (stretch is key!), or straps that can untie.

In the newborn days, when I’m nursing constantly, I go for dresses that are extremely easy for breastfeeding – ideally just smocking, so I can pull it down (I have other great outfit ideas for newborn photos in this post). But now that my son is older, I don’t mind a few buttons. And honestly, sometimes I’ll wear a dress that isn’t easily accessible for breastfeeding, but if it’s short, I can pull it up. I only do this if I’m not going to be out and about, but it works fine when I’m at home. And since I always wear shorts under my dresses, I’m not totally exposed.

I shared a handful of easy-to-recreate “cool mom” outfits here, but today I’m diving specifically into my most-worn nursing-friendly dresses! If none of these options suit your fancy, I have a few more dresses that I wear for everyday mom life rounded up here.

1. Hill House Ellie Nap Dress

My very favorite dress for postpartum life in general is the Ellie Nap Dress by Hill House Home. Not only does it work seamlessly while nursing since you can pull the straps and bodice smocking down, but it’s comfortable and flattering in all the right places (read my detailed review of the Nap Dress here).

Like I said, being able to wear clothes that aren’t specific to breastfeeding makes me feel more human, so I now own multiple styles from Hill House. The smocking is very sturdy with great compression, but it’s not restrictive at all. I wore this around the house, to church, on errands, and everywhere else in those early postpartum days (even home from the hospital). And the best part is that I can still wear it today!

I wear this dress with sandals, white sneakers, or go barefoot around my house (here are a few tips for wearing sneakers with dresses). The sizing is forgiving, but if you’re between sizes, opt for the smaller one. While they make this dress in a ton of colors and patterns, skip the solid colors and go with something a little busier so milk spots aren’t as noticeable.

The pattern I’m wearing below is no longer available, but the Navy Tonal Seersucker is a new favorite I’d love to get my hands on. I also like this affordable alternative from Quince – just size up one!

2. Charlie Sleeveless Dress

Next on my must-haves list is the navy sleeveless Charlie dress from Tuckernuck. I wore this at least once a week last summer when Charles was a newborn. It’s both casual and polished, making it a great option for anywhere you might go. I dressed it up with heeled sandals for church, wore it with flat sandals for errands, and threw on white sneakers when I wanted to dress it down more casually.

The front placket has functional buttons, so while it doesn’t look like a shirt dress, it actually is (which makes it ideal for nursing in public). Since I was sweating all the time in the early postpartum months (thanks to hormones, I guess!), the sleeveless fit was fantastic. I own this dress in navy and a flax color.

Wear a comfortable nursing bra underneath, and then throw on a pair of biker shorts (these biker shorts from Amazon are my favorites) so you’re not worried about bending over, sitting down, or chasing your other child. I especially appreciate the relaxed fit since I didn’t want to wear anything too fitted in those first few months. I wear a size XS in this dress, for reference.

3. Chino Rhoda Mini Dress

I recently got the Navy Chino Mini Dress, and my first thought was how cute it is that you almost forget it’s breastfeeding-friendly. The button front is what makes it work for nursing. You just unbutton from the top, no awkward pulling or stretching out the neckline, and button it right back up when you’re done.

I like that it doesn’t look like a nursing dress. It just looks like a cute dress. The chino fabric has enough structure to hold up through a long day, and navy goes with everything. Sneakers in the daytime, sandals for dinner. I ordered this in an XS and it fits perfectly, but I may have gone with a small if I were fresh into breastfeeding.

4. Chambray Callahan Shirt Dress

This Chambray Callahan Shirt Dress is another nursing-friendly winner that I still wear today. It’s a thin, lightweight material that easily unbuttons for nursing. The fit is relaxed and fun, which pairs perfectly with flat or heeled sandals (and white sneakers, of course).

I hang it to dry after washing, so keep that in mind when purchasing, since it’s not quite as “easy” as other dresses. I wear Amazon biker shorts underneath this dress since it does blow up a bit on windy days. While it requires one extra step for laundering, the dress itself is very easy to dress up or down with shoes and accessories. I wore this weekly with Charles last summer. Size down if you’re on the fence – this is an XS.

5. Frank and Eileen Rory Maxi Shirtdress

I didn’t own the Rory Maxi Shirtdress when I was newly postpartum, but now that I have it, I’ve been recommending it to all of my pregnant friends. The relaxed fit works well with nursing bras, and the material is lightweight but not sheer. The most surprising part is that it’s flattering on my petite frame.

While Frank and Eileen pieces are pricey, the quality is worth every penny (and since the brand is actually founded by moms, they made sure everything is easily washable and functional to wear around kids). If you love this look but need something more affordable, this Everlane Midi Shirtdress looks very similar.

6. Chloe Dress or Harper Dress

There will be a few times throughout your breastfeeding journey where you need to dress up a bit (maybe for a graduation ceremony, a wedding, a friend’s baby shower, etc.), and the Chloe Dress from Tuckernuck or this Harper dress from Abbey Glass will be your best friend.

Both are similar in shape and style, and are two of the most timeless dresses I own. Every time I wear them, I feel like Jackie O. The front plackets have buttons that are functional for breastfeeding, but you’d never know by the look of them. (Note that Amazon has a similar look for less.)

I style these most often with heeled sandals or nude pumps.

I’ve attempted to curl my hair with a flat iron, and it’s just a total disaster. But I find it super easy to use a curling iron, so I usually stick with that method (or I use my Dyson AirWrap). Plus, it gives a more polished look vs. beachy waves, which I generally prefer. After all, we all want Victoria Secret Angel curls, right? How to Make Your Curls Last 3 Days

The biggest reason my curls hold for multiple days isn’t the curling iron (although that certainly makes a difference, especially with how easy it is to curl my hair), but everything I do before I even pick up my curling iron. 

Don’t Curl Your Hair the Day You Wash it

I washed my hair on Saturday, and I’m curling it on Tuesday, and that’s not an accident. Freshly washed hair is too slick to hold a curl; you need a little grip. I like to do a smooth blowout on day 1, which often lasts to day 2. Then, by day 3, when things are getting iffy, that’s when I curl to “save” my blowout, and the curls will last another 2 days. And then I’ll wash.

Put Dry Shampoo in BEFORE Your Hair Gets Oily

Don’t wait until your hair is greasy — put dry shampoo in on wash day. If you wait until your hair is greasy to put in dry shampoo, you’re playing catch-up. I put dry shampoo on the day I wash my hair then add a little more each day. It absorbs better, gives my hair grip, and the curls hold longer.

I brush it on top, clip my hair up, and get underneath too since that’s where I notice sweat the most, which will quickly ruin my blowout…then I brush it through.

Always Use a Heat Protectant

Since I’m using a heat tool almost every single day, this isn’t optional. I use the In Common Magic Mist on wet hair the day I wash. If you skip a heat protectant, your curls won’t hold as well over time. Fried hair frizzes, and unfortunately, it doesn’t curl.

Let Your Curls Cool Before You Touch Them

This is the tip nobody talks about. After I curl a section, I leave it alone. I don’t run my fingers through it, I don’t shake it out. I do my makeup while it cools. By the time I’m done with my eyebrows, the curls have set. The longer they cool untouched, the longer they hold.

Refresh on Day 2 and 3

By day 2 and 3, I’m not curling everything from scratch. I add more dry shampoo, hit it with the Chris McMillan Dry Texture Spray and only touch up the few pieces that have totally fallen. Less heat, more product, longer-lasting curls.

Shine has always been a challenge since having kids, and this oil has made me feel more confident about my hair. I use it after my hair is curled to loosen everything up and smooth it out. Don’t go heavy with your hands, just brush your fingers through. If a piece is extra frizzy, apply a little more pressure and pull it down.

Chris McMillan Dry Texture Spray

I never use hairspray since I don’t like how it feels or looks. This gives my hair texture and works as a second layer of dry shampoo. I use it after curling to set everything and add a little grit.

Alligator Clips

I don’t need these as much when my hair is shorter, but depending on my hair length, clipping it up is super helpful! With long hair, these are SO necessary.

T3 Curling iron

I’ve had it for 8 years. It’s the best, and I also like the heat settings, plus I feel like I’m protecting my hair better. I do not use a curling wand because I like the clamp! If you use a wand, wrap your hair but not at the ends. If you want tighter curls, wrap small sections of hair in each section. I typically do larger sections for looser curls.

Why I’m Still Using the Same T3 Curling Iron After 8 Years

I’ve had cheaper curling irons before, and I always had to replace them every couple of years because I curl my hair so often (the springs always broke). I’ve had this T3 iron for over eight years now. Yes, it costs more than a drugstore curling iron. But if you don’t have to replace it every two years, you’re saving money long-term.

It gets hotter, heat is distributed more evenly, and the clamp matters more than people think. A loose clamp or one that’s too stiff makes it harder to control the barrel, and that’s what causes crimps. If you’ve struggled with curling, upgrading your iron will make a bigger difference than you think.

I have the 1.25″ barrel and have used it on short, long, and collar bone length hair. Bigger barrel = looser curl; smaller barrel = tighter curl. The 1.25″ works for almost anyone.

Easy Hair Curling Tips

Tip #1

I prefer curled hair with loose ends and curls not too close to the root, which is why I clasp it with the curling iron barrel near the root and never curl from the bottom. There are lots of methods for curling hair, but this is my tried and trusted method.

You’ll notice how the ends of my hair stick out just a little after I wrap my hair around the barrel. That gives it a little more natural look by not tucking the ends into the iron.

Tip #2

Always twist your wrist to turn the barrel away from your face so it curls away, which helps open up the hair for a fresher look. When you’re curling the back, curl a few pieces in the alternate direction so they don’t all clump together.

Tip #3

I grab somewhat large sections of hair to make it go quickly and so it’s not overly curled (the more hair you use, the closer you’ll get to loose beach waves, and if you use smaller section, you’ll get more defined curls). Then, I go back and get pieces that are too straight and curl them separately. That also helps keep it natural-looking so all the curls aren’t exactly the same size and/or perfectly curled. I prefer looser curls, so that’s why I use large sections of hair.

Tip #4

After I curl, I let the curls sit for a few minutes to cool (usually I do my makeup at this point). Leave your hair alone while the curls are still warm – letting them cool while more tightly curled helps them hold longer. This helps make them bouncy curls.

Tip #5

I don’t brush it out. When I apply texturizer, I use my fingers at that point to break up the curls a bit. If you’re left with tight curls and want to loosen them, use a wide tooth comb to run through your hair. Over time, you should also see the curls fall a tad. I don’t add anything usually (no bobby pins or clips), I just let it fall naturally.

I feel like straight-leg jeans are just one of those rare things in fashion that never needs a comeback — because they never left. Picture Princess Diana in the ’90s. She’s a timeless icon. That basically sums up how I feel about a great pair of straight-leg jeans: a timeless icon. They work with everything in your wardrobe. I dress mine up with a structured blazer and ankle boots, or keep it simple with sandals or clogs. And they’ll look just as good ten years from now as they do today.

You won’t find a round-up of 30 jeans here (though I did test 10 different pairs to get here, including everything from Gap to Agolde to Frame to Favorite Daughter, plus budget pairs from Target and Amazon). I’ve narrowed it down to three options that are genuinely worth adding to your closet.

The Best Straight-Leg Jeans Overall

I first fell for AYR denim when they gifted me a pair of their Secret Sauce jeans, which might be the most flattering pair to ever grace my booty. So when my hairstylist was wearing the most perfect straight-leg jeans I’d ever seen and told me they were AYR, I was not surprised and placed an order before I even got home.

I ordered two styles: the Legend and the Bud. The Legend is a cleaner, more fitted straight-leg fit through the leg. The Bud runs a little looser, and because I have muscular thighs, it ended up being the better fit for me. If you’re slimmer through the leg, you’ll probably love the Legend. If you’ve got more going on through the hips and thighs, I think the Bud is a better fit.

Sizing note: I ordered a 25 and a 26. The 25 was too snug in the bum, and the 26 stretches out just slightly with wear, but I prefer how it fits throughout the leg. I use these little waistband button pins to adjust the waist when needed. They also come in three inseam lengths, which is rare and worth noting if you’re petite or tall.

These are a splurge, but they earn it. And if you love AYR’s dark wash options, they’re just as good in a blue jean or medium-wash as they are in the styles I tested.

Abercrombie — Best Affordable Straight-Leg Jeans

If you want a more affordable straight-leg jean with a rigid, structured feel, these Abercrombie mid rise 90s are the ones to get. I’ve had mine for over three years and still wear them regularly. These have a ’90s straight silhouette and come in four lengths options. I don’t love the washes as much as AYR, but the light wash is my favorite of what they currently carry. I typically wear a 25 or 26 in Abercrombie denim, but I’d size up in this style. They sell out fast, but they restock often, so check back if your size is gone.

Levi’s Ribcage Straight — Best High-Rise Option

If high-rise is your thing, the Levi’s Ribcage Straight is incredibly flattering. The only reason it’s not my top pick is the button fly. I just don’t find it as flattering, and it’s kind of annoying to deal with. That’s a personal preference, not a flaw in the jean itself.

This exact pair in white was my favorite out of the 15 pairs I tried for my best white jeans roundup. The fit speaks for itself. The full-length inseam is my preference, but they also sell an ankle length if you want something that sits above the shoe. Size up — always. I have a 26 and would have been happier in a 27.

These go on sale regularly, but they go fast. Worth keeping on your radar if the button fly doesn’t bother you like it does me!

Pairs That Didn’t Make the Cut

I tested a lot of jeans to get here. Everyone’s body type is so different it might be worth looking at these options that came close, but were just a miss for me: Favorite Daughter (just a weird fit overall), Pistola Cassie (too tight in the front of the leg), Frame Le Sleek (too tight through the leg on me), and Madewell Dean, which doesn’t come in petite. Why I wear shorts under a dress

The right pair should feel like a second skin. Snug but stretchy, breathable, and totally invisible under clothes. Whatever brand or pair you go for, look for shorts with these features: 

• Comfortable Fit: No pinching, squeezing, or constant adjusting. Look for a secure fit that hugs your body without cutting into your skin or feeling like shapewear.
• Discreet Under Clothes: Choose a neutral shade that won’t show through sheer fabrics and a silhouette that stays smooth and line-free.
• Breathable Fabric: Moisture-wicking blends like polyester/spandex, nylon/spandex, or bamboo/modal are great for hot days. Cotton feels soft but holds moisture, so skip it for all-day wear.
• Inseam Length: A 5–7 inch inseam typically offers the best balance. It’s long enough to prevent thigh rub, short enough to stay hidden.
• Stay-Put Waistband: A high-rise, wide waistband won’t roll down or dig in like tight elastic ones do.
• Color Options: Black is a classic, but nude tones work better under light fabrics. Some brands now offer a wider range of skin-tone shades.

Thigh Society makes a handful of different shorts to wear underneath dresses. The Original shorts are the most similar to the Amazon Biker shorts. They’re opaque, come in multiple colors, and they’re velvety-soft. But what’s worth calling out is the Cooling Short that’s sheer. They’re made with silky, performance fabric that pulls heat and moisture away from the body. The Cooling Short would be best for someone who wants chafing prevention and moisture-wicking. However, I wouldn’t wear them under mini dresses that you’re afraid may blow up since they’re sheer.

SPANX is known for its shapewear, so their shorts will have more compression than the other two brands in this post. But if you want something that holds you in, it’s hard to beat the classic SPANXsculpt Mid-Thigh Shorts. These are lightweight, breathable, and seam-free at the center. This pair of shorts is sheer as well, so keep that in mind when you’re wearing loose mini dresses. These is probably best to wear under more fitted dresses when you want to highlight your figure.

Both are great brands, but if you want something affordable, comfortable, and available in multiple colors and lengths, Amazon biker shorts are still my go-to.

Tips for Wearing Shorts Under Dresses

Amazon Callahan Dress Dupe – I’m so impressed with this Tuckernuck lookalike! The fabric is better than the real thing, and I prefer the shoulder detailing, too! If you’ve been nervous about the length or worried it’ll look like too much fabric or shapeless, I get it. Length can feel tricky, especially if you’re on the shorter side like me. I’m 5’1″ and one of my favorite tricks is to shop midi skirts instead, because a lot of maxis don’t come in petite. On me, a midi hits right at the ankle and reads as a full maxi.

But whether you’re petite or not, a good maxi skirt works in just about every season. It can feel polished without being too fussy. I’ve figured out a few things that make all the difference, and I’m sharing all of it below. How to style a maxi skirt–the grown-up edition.

My Favorite Maxi Skirts

Linen Maxi Skirt – This skirt is the one I referenced above that I’ve been wearing nonstop. First, it’s linen and flows beautifully. Second, it’s white and goes.with.everything. If you only have one maxi skirt in your wardrobe, this should be the one (a linen maxi is ideal for your summer capsule wardrobe).

Quince Organic Poplin Tiered Maxi Skirt – This Quince skirt is a great dupe for my favorite Prado Maxi skirt from Tuckernuck, which is unfortunately sold out. I love how instantly polished this one feels, even paired with a white tee. It’s lightweight and flowy, which is basically the whole job of a maxi skirt. How to Style a Maxi Skirt

The biggest thing I’ve learned (especially being on the shorter side) is that proportion is everything. You don’t want to drown in fabric, but you also don’t want to feel constricted. A few things that consistently work for me:

• Define your waist. Whether it’s a tuck, a belt, or a fitted top, you need something to break up the length and give your silhouette shape. Skipping this step is usually what makes a maxi look frumpy instead of intentional.
• Balance the volume. If your skirt is flowy and full, keep your top fitted or structured. If your skirt is more streamlined, you have room to play with a looser top or a cropped layer.
• Think about your shoes. Even a small heel or a simple slide sandal adds just enough length to keep the proportions balanced. Flat sneakers work too, but if you’re petite, a little height goes a long way.

I wore this exact outfit to run errands and ended up at an impromptu lunch and felt completely appropriate for both. The key is the tuck. Pull the front in loosely at the waistband and let the rest fall.

I feel like a cardigan over a fitted tank is the easiest maxi skirt outfit to pull off because you likely already have a lot of these options in your closet. I like this style with a fitted tank, because you can throw the cardigan on or drape it over your shoulders. 4. Chunky Knit Sweater + Maxi

This combo is a great seasonal transition outfit. Try a chunky knit sweater half-tucked into the waistband of your skirt. The texture plays well against a flowy maxi and it ends up looking a lot more put-together than it sounds. If your sweater has a pattern or fun detail, choose a solid more simple maxi skirt. If you have a basic sweater, dressing up the outfit with a floral skirt would be a fun option. Just don’t go bold with the top and bottom.

This is the easiest, most obvious way to style a maxi skirt. A fitted sleeveless top tucked into a high-waisted maxi takes about three minutes to put together and it’s simple and chic. 7. Graphic Tee + Maxi Skirt

I feel like people underestimate how good a graphic tee looks with a maxi skirt. Abercrombie has really good vintage-inspired graphic tees right now. Knot the tee or tuck it in. There isn’t a better look out there made for a skirt with sneakers. This look is the most casual and will win you points in the “cool mom” department.

A mom bag becomes a catch-all fast. Snacks, diapers, tiny toys, tissues, a rogue crayon…it all ends up in there. And while I will always love a cute bag (I’m only human), function has definitely become the priority for me as a mom to two boys. The good news is you don’t have to sacrifice style to get a bag that works. I’ve tried everything over the years from diaper bags, crossbodies, backpacks, oversized totes, and I’ve landed on some real favorites. I’m sharing all of them today.

The Best Mom Purses for the Functional Mom

The very best mom purse I own is a simple tote bag. While most people say backpacks are a must for moms, I’m not really a backpack person and rarely carry one. I love the look and feel of a good tote, so that’s usually my top pick. But to be fair, there are definitely days when a backpack makes the most sense. When I know I need to be hands-free, like at the zoo, I have a couple of backpacks I trust to get the job done (so I shared those below). A good crossbody is also one of my most-used bags since that also allows me go hands-free. Alright, let’s get into my picks!

A Classic Tote

What I love most about a tote bag is they look good with nearly any outfit. Plus, they’re roomy without being too mom-ish…just throw over your shoulder and go.

My personal favorite is the Classic Easy Tote from Cuyana. I’ve shown up to school as the “mystery reader” with this bag. I’ve run every errands with it, and it goes to and from work with me. It hits that sweet spot of being big enough to fit everything you need for yourself and the kids…laptop, snacks, a small makeup bag, wallet, and keys. But I love it because it still looks polished enough for work, and makes me feel like a classy adult. Basically, it holds all the things, but doesn’t feel heavier than both my children.

If the Cuyana is out of your budget, the Madewell Handwoven Leather Tote (pictured above) is a great alternative. It’s more affordable and a little more casual. I used mine nonstop for two years before switching to the Cuyana, so I can vouch for it. It has a soft but structured shape and is a bit smaller than the Cuyana, but has held up beautifully for as often as I use it to tote things to and from the office.

It gives you a little more room without being too bulky or heavy, and a leather bag still looks really polished. There are so many small leather backpack options out there now, but the Cuyana Leather Backpack is at the top of my list! It’s sleek with great leather quality and just looks beautiful. Frankly, Cuyana just knows how to make a beautiful leather bag.

If you’re chasing toddlers or need both hands free, a backpack is a lifesaver (even coming from a non-backpack gal). My top pick in this category is the Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack. It has durable fabric that can be cleaned, (yes, please), exterior water bottle pockets, a main compartment with great organization, and a hidden zip pocket for valuables. It comes in a few sizes so you can choose which one will work best for you.

The straps are padded, which I didn’t think I cared about until I didn’t have it. An it’s a sleek enough design to wear with jeans and a blazer or leggings and your favorite sneakers.
