The Hollywood Reporter: What do you think it is about your writing that resonates with Hollywood and attracts the attention of filmmakers?

Stephenie Meyer: You know, I have no idea why it resonates with anyone except for myself. I know it makes me happy. I feel like a lot of the appeal for Hollywood now is the crazy fan base who have made this so successful. Obviously Hollywood is always trying to tap into whatever they think is gonna be lucrative, but with the first one, someone just responded to the story they saw potential there, which was cool. We got lucky where with Catherine Hardwicke, she really wanted to make it like the book. There was an original script before we were with Summit that was so completely bizarrely different.

THR: What was different about it?

SM: FBI, boat chases, night vision goggles, Bella with a gun. Yeah, it was crazy. At the time — once you give away your rights you can’t object to the changes. It was just kind of like, ‘ahh!’ And then they didn’t make it and they let the rights come back, and it was like, ‘OK, I’m taking this home and no one’s ever touching it again.’ Then Erik Feig (former president of worldwide production and acquisitions at Summit, now president of production at Lionsgate) called and said, ‘Please we’ll do anything. We really want to make your story.’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, I’ve heard that before.’ And he’s like, ‘No, no,’ and he let me come up with a rider where I wrote all these things that couldn’t change. They were like, ‘Yes, we’ll do it’ and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, well then I guess you really do want to make it as it is. That’s cool.’

THR: Were you at all scared about how The Host would translate to film?

SM: So many people had a hard time with that. The only three people I think who weren’t ever worried were me, Nick Wechsler, the producer, and Andrew Niccol, the director, because we all are like, ‘No, it’s obvious, totally obvious. You just need to have the most brilliant actress in the world and you don’t have a problem.’ And we got her, so we were really lucky. Saoirse [Ronan] is amazing. When you have an actress of that caliber, especially when not everybody knows who she is yet, I think she’s going to blow people away. And then you give her this concept role, it’s like a gift. She just loves to be able to do it and watching her — oh my gosh. There’s this one scene that has no music, it’s a close-up of her face for five minutes and you cannot look away. I mean, tears streaming down my face the first time I saw it. It was unreal.

THR: How involved have you been in the casting process?

SM: That was such a collaborative group. Nick brought me in from the very beginning. He wanted to do the movie and we got together. We kind of talked about how would you do this, and we both felt comfortable with it. Then he’s like, ‘What are your favorite science-fiction movies?’ My number one favorite science-fiction movie is Gattaca. Andrew Niccol was at the top of the list. I also really likedThe Truman Show because it’s such an odd but cool concept, and Andrew wrote that originally as a thriller and not a comedy. I’d really love to see that script — someday, I’m gonna get to read that. [Nick’s] like, ‘Well, Andrew’s fantastic’ and he’d worked with him before, and Andrew wanted to do it. He’s never done an adaptation before, so that was really cool.

Hi everyone. I hope you’re all coming back from a really fabulous Thanksgiving weekend, full of quality family time, too much delicious food, and restful tryptophan comas.

Two weeks ago, while doing press for Breaking Dawn 2, there were a lot of questions I wasn’t able to answer because I didn’t want to spoil the ending for anyone. I promised in a couple of interviews that I would post the answer to a specific question on my website once everyone had had a chance to see the movie. Now, if there is anyone reading this who hasn’t had a chance to see BD2 yet and really wants to remain unspoiled, please stop reading now.

***spoilers ahead***

The question, which I got frequently, was how I felt about having a big change inserted into the story during the final climax. My answer was that it didn’t feel like such a huge departure. For me, this moment is already in the book. However, we don’t get to see it in all its exciting and gory detail because we are seeing the world only through Bella’s eyes. A few of the reporters I talked to wanted to know where in the book this moment was hidden. The answer is page 738, fourth paragraph down:

“Aro stared into my eyes for a long, tense moment. I had no idea what he was searching for, or what he found, but after he had measured me for that moment, something in his face changed, a faint shift in the set of his mouth and eyes, and I knew that Aro had made his decision.”

In this short analysis, after Bella has revealed the depth of her power, Aro plays out in his head the probable outcome of a battle with the Cullens. Much like what we see in the movie, Aro foresees a more evenly matched fight than he had expected, the loss of too many of his key players, and—most unacceptable—the likelihood of his own death. Though odds are that the Volturi would have come out on top in the end, Aro wouldn’t have lived to see it and the unassailable nature of the Volturi’s authority would have been broken, possibly forever. It is this vision of the future—though imperfect guesswork on his part—that motivates his retreat.

Melissa Rosenberg and I have both mentioned the fateful dinner we had (back during the filming of Eclipse) where we hashed out a way to make the end of Breaking Dawn more cinematic. This was the idea we latched on to—how do we make this vision of Aro’s into something the viewer can experience? The answer was pretty simple once we looked at it that way—we already had a character who could show us visions. So the only real change to the book ending of Breaking Dawn is that Alice enters the scene earlier, and comes in contact with Aro.

(Are there a few little trespasses against the mythology in this vision? Yes, as some of you have pointed out. The consensus was that a minor deviation from what had been established was forgivable in the name of entertainment. I had a few very elaborate solutions, but they were too confusing and not nearly as cinematic as the final product. And obviously, the result was very entertaining.)

A few reporters asked me if I would have done anything different in the battle if I had written it; the answer is yes. Mainly, I would have killed more Cullens. I do think the Volturi would have won the day; as the talented players were taken out, in the end it would be brute strength that would determine the victor, and the Volturi have more soldiers and more experience. Of course, if we had offed Edward or something, it might have been too obvious that it was a vision sequence. In the end, when the vision was revealed, the reaction I heard in the two unsuspecting audiences I viewed it with was nothing but relief and enthusiasm. Kudos to Bill C for creating the perfect emotional response! He plays our heartstrings like a virtuoso.

It was really something to get to spend a little time with the fans at the BD2 events, and to watch the movie at the premiere with so many of them. It was the best experience I’ve ever had at a Twilight movie, and a perfect conclusion to my personal Twilight experience. I hope you also enjoyed the movie, and each other, for this last big bang. You, the readers and viewers, are the ones who have made this whole ten-year experience into something unbelievable and amazing, and I thank you so much for it. I hope I get to see some of you again in March (shameless The Host plug), because it makes me too sad to think that my relationship with my readers is ending, too.

On the flight now from Madrid to Berlin, I wanted to check in one last time, as you’re finally getting a look at what we’ve all been working on so intensely.  It’s hard to believe that after our Berlin premiere tonight, my TWILIGHT journey will finally come to a close.  It’s been almost three years since I first wrote to you.  I’m very proud of what we’ve created together since then, and I hope that PART II fulfills your expectations for the grand finale to Stephenie’s sprawling saga. Fingers crossed that you’ve also managed to stay at least mostly spoiler-free, in order to enjoy the twists and parting gifts we have in store for you…

Thank you again for making me feel like a member of your fandom family online…for sleeping in The Line in San Diego in order to laugh with us in Hall H…for traveling great distances to join us in L.A. for last year’s Tent City and this year’s Fan Camp.  Above all, thank you for trusting me with this universe you care so deeply about – we tried to match your intensity in our attention to every detail.  That said, I don’t think I’ll ever live down the shame of being spied on by Twihard covens around the world on our very first night of shooting in Rio.  Thanks to photos shot and instantly posted online of Bella and Edward on their honeymoon, we were called out in real time for missing a certain engagement ring…  (Sorry — again!)

As with you all, what I’ll take with me from my time in Forks are so many great friendships – our massive cast of talented actors, and new creative partners such as Melissa Rosenberg, Guillermo Navarro and Phil Tippett.  I hope to know them all for years and to work with them again soon, making movies yet to be dreamed up.  At the L.A. premiere Monday night, Phil said we should make a “bloody, giant monster movie.”  But is there room for a musical number?

CM – Being apart of such a huge Box Office Franchise like, The Twilight Saga, how has it changed your life for the good and the bad?
BBS – Well it’s so far been all good–I have been all over the world, met amazing people and there are so many more opportunities for me now.

CM – When did you realize that acting was a craft you wanted to pursue?

AL – The first day I went to acting class. I love the human freedom that art brings. I love the idea of bringing another person alive through humanity parallel pain. It is always an honored to play any character.

CM – Give us the breakdown of your character….

AL – Henri is sort of an innocent french vampire that doesn’t like conflict however in this film his moral standards gets challenged. He definitely isn’t a fan of the Volturies, but given how powerful they are the film will show how he deals with them.

CM – Were there any memorable moments, on the set of Breaking Dawn, that were memorable for you?

AL – I love the Parisian scene that we shot in Baton Rouge. I remember hiding my character clothes under a white sheet because fans and paparazzi were taking pictures and we didn’t want to give anything away from the film. One of my favorite scene was shooting the fighting scene with Kristen Stewart, she such an intense and amazing actress, I definitely learned a lot from her.

When you’re writing, and specifically with Twilight, where does your loyalty and responsibility lie? Does it lie with making the fans happy? Does it lie with being true to the source material? Does it lie with making the characters how you want them to be perceived? Or does it lie with yourself, being true to yourself, even if it means changing the rules?

A little bit of everything but primarily being true to the source material because then you’re being true to the fans and the original author. That is sort of the Bible, the original book. Indistinguishable from Stephanie [Meyer] herself, she’s really my gauge. Is she responding to it? Does it feel like her story? And for me, I put myself in the perspective of an audience member. Is this something I want to see? I’m the audience in my own mind. I don’t write for an audience out there. You can’t possibly sit there and go, “Oh, the audience is going to love this scene? I don’t know. They may hate that scene.” But, do I love it, do I want to actually pay money to go see this, go see this character. So, it’s sort of all those things working in tandem.

With Breaking Dawn Part 2 it’s very visual, perhaps moreso than the others because of the twist and the “scene that shall not be named”. When you were constructing the script, and particularly that scene because this is a story twist not in the book and originates from you, do you visualize the scene and then give strong visual instruction to Bill Condon?

I give him visual “suggestions.” He and I work closely on every aspect of the story. He’s an Academy Award winning screenwriter. It’s tremendous to be working with him and bouncing ideas around him is a dream come true. He really brought me up several levels. Learned a lot from him in that process. I wrote an original draft of that whole sequence, and kind of placing people here and there and try to tell the story of what would happen in that situation, and then he would work with his stunt coordinators, special effects editor and he would come back and he’d say, “What if we put this character there?, etc.”. So, I would map it out per their stating. It was a little bit of my coming to them with, “Here’s sort of a general vicinity” and then him working with that and going back and forth and actually mapping it out on the page. Everything needs to be on the page, whether it’s my original idea or his or the stunt coordinator. It all gets there – somehow. It eventually lands on the page. [laughing]

CM – Can you unveil any of beauty secrets or rituals that you practice on a daily basis?

JS – I take vitamins everyday. My friend Gabi is a nutritionist and got me under her thumb – so fish oils and probiotics are part of my daily regime. Hydrate from the inside and out I hear echoeing in my head everyday.

CM – You have worked on the small screen in England and here in the US, what is the biggest difference for you going from the set of a TV Show to a huge Box Office Franchise like, Twilight?

JS – Twilight is worldwide – so it has a much larger audience, and there is something special about seeing myself on the big screen. Also there are only so many things in the world that people camp out for and Twilight is one of them. The Twilight fans are so dedicated that this is a new experience that nothing else is similar too. Eastenders was wonderful though in it being my first entrance into primetime television and as an actress having time to develop a character and move her through many difference life experiences on the series.

CM – Tell us more about your character, Zafrina, from Breaking Dawn Pt. 2…..

JS – Zafrina is an Amazonian vampire and she has a special power – she can make people see anything she wishes. She is asked by the Cullens to come and help them against the Vulturi and she and her powers are useful to them in their time of need. She is ferral, has a strong family instinct and very red eyes.

CM – Did you get any “battle scars” from stunts on set?

JS – I actually did hurt my little finger whilst practising stunts – but I kind of liked it – it made me feel tough that I was really participating and putting myself on the line for this character and film.

For those of you who spent your weekend in the world of Forks, Wash., you know that the conclusion of the film is far different than the conclusion of the book. Rather than the meeting of the Volturi and the Cullen clan ending in a handshake and a “see ya later,” it concludes with a gory battle where many of your favorite vampires lose their immortal lives. Or does it?

As “Twilight” lore goes, the scene was constructed far before director Bill Condon arrived on the movie. Rather, it was hashed out in a meeting between Meyer and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg long before cameras ever rolled on “Breaking Dawn.” The new, much more active and engaging conclusion was one of the key reasons “Breaking Dawn” was even able to become a movie, considering the book’s filmic challenges.

And though the conclusion comes initially as a shock to fans, specifically when Carlisle Cullen’s head is first shown severed from his body, it’s all in the book, according to Meyer.

“The battle is exactly what Aro saw,” Meyer said during a pre-release interview. “There’s a moment in the novel when he’s staring at Bella and she’s looking back at him and feeling this assessment. And then everything turns. But we can’t see what he’s seeing. But what he’s seeing is, ‘It’s going to be a close fight, a lot of people are going to die and I’m probably going to die. I’m going to die.’ And for him, in my mind, the Volturi win the day. They do. They outnumber you. They would win. But they would be decimated. Their power would be crippled, and he realizes he’s not going to survive it and that’s what changes his mind.”

Meyer adds that the only element they changed was adding Alice. “We had Alice get involved so we could visually show it, but it’s all still there.”

Condon had a different take on how the battle would play out. “I wanted to kill all the major Volturi (which we ultimately did). Stephenie was nervous that if we wiped them out the audience would have been upset that it was merely Alice’s vision,” he said. “She wanted to kill many fewer Volturi, wipe out Emmett and Rosalie and some others on the Cullen side. I didn’t agree.”
