Isn't that the truth? All we want to do is have a great time while we're on this planet. As my favorite band, Rush, sings in the song "Dreamline" - "Learning that we're only immortal for a limited time".

When we're young we think we can conquer the world. That we know everything, and well, our parents know nothing!

Then, we become parents and learn the hard way that they were right! Boy, do we feel like eating crow when that time comes! As I call and ask for advice, I can hear my mom giggle as she tries to offer her wisdom knowing she just wants to say, I told you so or, It's your turn!

As a mom of an 18 year old girl, I have found I am becoming my mother. Offering sage advice that falls upon deaf ears. Trying to let my daughter know that the choices she makes are probably not going to work the way she thinks they will. I am at the stage where Charlie Brown keeps hitting his head on the ground. He hasn't learned at all that the football he so wants to kick is going to be pulled away from him every time!

But he keeps trying and trying.

I wish I had the answers to give, but I don't. I really think that this is a cycle that only gets broken 1% of the time. Now, I don't have the statistics on it, but using my own calculations and speaking with fellow moms, it seems kids in this age range are all the same. I look back on my own teen years and think, yes, I was like that too. And, I'm sure my mom was, my grandmother was, my great-grandmother was, etc., etc. Is it possible we can break this chain? Is there a way that maybe our kids won't make the same mistakes we did?

Recently, a dear friend told me about this great book called -

The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist's Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents and Young Adults

Wow! Was that a great book! I wish I had found out about it earlier. Basically, the frontal lobe in teens aged 13 - 24 years old is not fully functional. Good judgment, reasoning skills, short term memory.....all gone!! None to be had. If you feel like your loving son or daughter has suddenly become an alien child, I would suggest you read this book.

It wasn't written to make excuses for how our teens act, but as an aid to give me a better understanding as to who I was as a teen and how my kiddo has followed suit.

I was able to learn some ways in which I could show her the missteps of her thought process. Is it helping? We'll see. She will soon be on her own and I can only hope that she will spread her wings and fly and not simply flail out of the nest. That before she takes that step into the volcano, a little mom bell will ring in her head and my voice will shout out "DON'T DO IT!"

Will she make mistakes? Oh, I'm sure of that, but as our parents and theirs before them have done, we will be there to pick her up, dust her off and help to start her over again.

It's great to be young.....ONCE! I'm ecstatic to be where I am today and know that I have survived the road hazards of life. I can only hope that my daughter will not have to go through everything I did to succeed in whatever she wants to be.

I can only hope that all of our daughters take from this to be sure they walk in the sun.

Then, we can all be together to have some fun!

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever?

Recently, I heard of a death of a young man. He was 43 on a skiing trip. He was by himself and had a brain aneurysm. He wasn't identified until 4 days after his death.

My husband knew this man very well years ago. They were really good friends, but as time goes on, you move, you separate and life continues thinking about the other, but things come up in one's life where you can't be the "devil may care" people you once were. You marry, have children. You have the random phone call but may be too busy to take it or talk long. We just don't have time to stop anymore.

Then, something tragic happens. My husband didn't find out about the death of his friend until 3 months after the fact. The friends that all hung out together never called. Never reached out. Maybe they assumed he knew. Maybe they just forgot. Maybe they just didn't think about it. There is no obituary, no mention of his life, social media has been pulled as if he never existed except for the articles in the newspaper about the accident. My husband just happened to hear about it through casual conversation. What a horrible way to find out about a friend's death.

To hear about the death of someone you went to high school with, or worked with years ago through media channels is one thing. You knew them in school or work, but never kept in touch. They were acquaintances. You feel sad for their family and offer condolences. But, to have known someone for years. Someone you were close to, traveled with, worked with, you would think your circle of friends would have notified everyone they knew. Yet, they didn't.

It's sad that life is like this now. Maybe it's that most people assume that someone else will hear about the news over Facebook, Twitter or other social media outlets. I see it as technology has made us lose touch with reaching out in person. Making a phone call. Connecting in person. We rely on the internet too much to get our quick info fix. See if it pertains to us. I hope that isn't the case. I would expect from my circle of friends if something tragic were to happen to any of us or our families that I would find out directly. Not through channels. Not months after the fact.

Life is too short and the unexpected happens. We should make sure we stay connected with our friends. Those we grew up with, had fun with, went on crazy road trips, getaway weekends, those whom we still remain close.

We should also make sure that we tell our loved ones, family and friends constantly how much they mean to us. Regardless of how much time has gone by.

Sure, I'd love to live forever, but if that doesn't happen, I would hope that those who are close to me would not have to find out in casual conversation.

To those friends you haven't spoken to in awhile, but care about, reach out to them. That one phone call will melt the months and years that you haven't spoken and it will be as if it were yesterday. Yes, we're busy, but as the old adage goes - we need to stop and smell the roses.

I Wanna Know What You're Thinking

My husband and I went on a little getaway this weekend in Houston, Texas. Wasn't planned, just packed a bag, checked to see what was going on and headed on down.

What piqued our interest was a concert called Electric Dreams - 80's New Wave EuroDisco Extravanganza. I loved the 80's music especially New Wave. Special guests were going to be - Christopher Anton (formerly of When In Rome) & the Joneses(Former Singer of Information Society). What more could you ask for?

I enjoyed listening to Information Society in the 80's, but had not heard of the other acts such as - Ken Lazslo, Gina T., Lian Ross and Gazebo. Since Information Society was very popular, we figured we would listen to the others until the group we liked came on.

We arrived to the concert about a half hour after it started. Much to our surprise, the Joneses and Christopher Anton were already on stage singing one of the few songs I knew from them. Everyone was still coming in to the venue. Walking around meeting everyone.

We watched as everyone enjoyed the first act, but they went nuts when Ken Lazslo went on stage and it got more so as each act came on to do their songs! Gina T., got a lot of screams as well!

What we didn't realize was that the rest of the singers were very popular in Vietnam in the 80's and that was the makeup of the crowd. They were dancing and singing and having a great time!

It also seemed like they really, really enjoyed Gazebo!

It really was a lot of fun and it's always enjoyable to just do spur of the moment things. You never know what will happen!

We had booked a room at the Lancaster Hotel which was two blocks from the venue. This hotel has been around for 90 years and is a perfect boutique hotel. With fluffy, cloud beds and feather pillows, it was perfect way to end the evening after the concert.

I can't say enough about the staff and the scent of the hotel. When you walk in, it almost smelled like Lagerfeld, or a really nice men's cologne. From the valet, to the front desk and everywhere in between, the staff was courteous and helpful.

What was really great was the complimentary breakfast. It was almost European with meat and cheese, bacon, Muesili, hard boiled eggs, etc. Which lent to our previous night of the Euro Disco!

It was a great way to get away even if it was just for one evening!

Today, I am saddened by the death of a very creative musician. I learned of Prince back in 1981 when I worked at Sound Warehouse. I always remember the cover of the self titled "Prince" album, because it was just him.

"Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" had come out and I was doing an inventory of the albums. A coworker of mine told me that Prince was a really good musician in that he played all the instruments and did all the vocals on his albums, but that his record company told him he wouldn't go far because he needed a band. But he didn't care and continued to put out albums that he recorded playing everything.

After listening to his music, I didn't care that he didn't have a band. I enjoyed it. I liked his style. I liked the beat. When "1999" came out, I was lucky enough to get one of the 7" Picture disc of that song and it is still in my record collection.

It wasn't until "Purple Rain" when he had The Revolution as his full fledged backing band and in my head, I figured he had sold out. But, the album was great!! The movie was great! It made me like him all the more to see him up on screen. To think he might be a little like what I saw in the theatre. I liked his style. Growing up, I marched to the beat of a different drum and here was someone who did the same.

From that album a little song called "Darling Nikki" appeared. It was interesting to say the least. People always think it's fun to have a song with your name in it, Help Me Rhonda - by The Beach Boys,

Oh, Donna - Buddy Holly and Michelle - The Beatles. But, they all had wholesome, nice songs. Mine was "Darling Nikki". Just like most Prince songs, it was about sex and self gratification but man, it had a sexy beat. Since I worked in a record store, my name was on my shirt and I became inundated with the silly questions - "Were you upset when he didn't call?" "Are you really like that?" Yes, childish questions. Once that happened, I changed my name to Shadowfax. No, not because of Gandalf's horse, but because of a new age jazz band with that name. Although, funny thing, they chose their name because of Gandalf's horse.

I've always admired Prince for his music, for being different, for being reclusive and for standing up for what he believed in. I saw him on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest not too long ago.

I was still impressed with him and his music and sorry that I had not kept up with his music.

Like many other musicians and singers, I took him for granted in thinking that he would be there for awhile putting out more music.

For me and for many other fans, he will be dearly missed. I can only imagine the music being made in the ever after with the other greats we have recently lost.

Cheeseburger In Paradise

I love food. Not to be cliche, but I might be one of those "Foodies" OH NO!!!

Not that it's a bad thing. Favorite shows? Top Chef. And I can't remember the name, but the one where they go into someone's house, grab whatever is in the fridge and pantry and cook with it.

That's the best way that I like to cook. Sometimes, when I'm busy and need something quick, I grab some chicken (so quick to thaw) add whatever veggies I can find from the fridge, add some chicken or beef stock and then keep adding to it. Most of the time, these meals are amazing. When asked by my family what I made, I don't have an answer. Some kind of chicken stuff.

This probably started from eating my grandmother's pot roast. Oh my gosh! It had to be the best in the world! So tender and tasty. It just fell apart. I asked her for the recipe one day while she was making it and she said, "Well, you just have to watch!"

She never wrote anything down. She learned the recipes from her mom by watching as well. I watched with rapt attention to detail. Hmmm..she used this and did that. One day while I was trying to recreate her pot roast, I called her. She went over what she normally put in the pot and then she said, "Here's my secret!" I listened carefuly, she whispered, "I use chicken broth instead of beef broth!"
I don't know if it was the broth or that she made everything with love, but to this day, I still cannot make my pot roast like hers.

Because of my grandmother, I emulated the way she cooked.. I might print up a recipe, but more often than not, I don't have a particular ingredient, so I improvise. The next time I make the dish, I try to remember what it had in it and then I just go for it!

I've definitely had some misses, but for the most part, I've had some great hits!

Pressure cooked Low Country Boil - YUM!

Which leads me to what's for dinner this evening! My husband has requested that I make Cheeseburger Pasta. Sounds interesting? I think it does. More than likely, it will have my own twist and I hope my family enjoys it. I will let you, my wonderful readers, know!

(Just Like) Starting Over

I've been creating my wonderful, luxurious soaps since 1998 when my daughter, Rayne, was born. But in 2010, difficulties started in my personal life that I couldn't completely overcome. I realized that the person I married wasn't who I thought he was and I came to my senses. I realized I had become the woman I said I would never be.

The one who doesn't see how bad things are and thinks, well this is my lot in life. This is how it will always be. How untrue those words were. How those thoughts were.

A dear friend said to me one day that I looked so sad and I unloaded everything on her. It was one of the best things I had done.

I decided I wasn't going to live this life anymore. I wasn't going to be "that woman". I gained strength that day and in doing so was empowered to get away from that environment. It also meant that I walked away from what I loved to do and was passionate about, which was creating my products. I had built a name for myself but to regain my sanity, I had to take a step back and find me again. I had to leave it behind.

In 2012, the most wonderful man literally walked into my life and welcomed my daughter and I with open arms. He accepted me for who I was. He showed me that there is true love. He made me feel beautiful and showed me that I am strong and loved and most importantly, he let me be me.

He also encouraged me to being again, to start over what I loved doing which was making my soap. He reignited my passion with 100% support. I couldn't have asked for a bigger cheerleader in my court.

I am so happy to be able to do what I love and with the backing of my loved ones that there is no turning back!

I AM HERE TO STAY!

Just Another Day

Sometimes it seems that we just get into ruts. You know, it's just another day. Nothing special. My life is humdrum.

I like to think that every day is a new adventure. You never know what's going to happen.

Lately, we've been having some gorgeous, clear, blue skies. If I need to run an errand, it's perfect for me to put the top down on my car and go somewhere. I don't care if it's to the grocery store or just needing to get gas! Again, you never know what will happen!

I drove down into the big city the other day, jamming out to some favorite tunes and kept hearing a motorcycle in the far lane. I glanced over and they were looking in my direction. Hmm...When I see motorcycles, I see them do their wave to their fellow bikers. Not this one. Maybe because it was a great day, with the top down and the person on the bike understanding the enjoyment of having the wind in your hair, but I received a motorcycle wave! That put a smile on my face for the rest of the drive in.

Whether it's designing a new soap scent or a new product, I know that my day will be filled with accomplishment and fun!

Instead of listening to the same music, I'll close my eyes and scroll the stations and pick one! You never know what's going to come through those speakers.

Go out and have your adventure. Keep your eyes open and look around! I bet you'll notice something you never have before and it will put a smile on your face!

I Don't Like Mondays

Is that a mantra you have working today? Are you one that dreads Mondays because:

The weekend is over.
After being able to sleep late on Saturday and Saturday, it's back to waking up early again for work or school. (Maybe that's why some people wear funeral clothes to work on Monday. ie:black and blue colors. Next time, look around. See if it's true!

Mondays shouldn't be all that bad. Here are some tips to have a great Monday!

Wake up earlier!
Yes, really! Wake up and be AWESOME! Get up a little earlier so you have more time to be in your comfy pj's. Enjoy your cup of coffee without rushing around to get everything done.
Start it off with a song!
Maybe not necessarily singing yourself, but crank up the music. Jam out! Have a party! Get that blood circulating and have fun first thing! I love to rock out to First Wave! What are your favorites?
Wear something new or that you haven't worn in awhile.
Remember your first day of school and you wanted to be dressed in your best? Start every Monday like that. Match something that's been in your closet awhile with something new! Start a new trend. Feel great about yourself!
Make someone smile!
Random acts of kindness are always cool. Buy the next person in line a cup of coffee or lunch! Pay it forward. You are sure to put a smile on someone's face and yours just by doing something special.
Make Monday Bongo day!
Especially if you have bongos! But, if you don't, make Monday a special day. Do something different each Monday. Not only will your coworkers enjoy being around you, but they may also start making their Mondays even better and then, guess what?

The day will have passed and you had fun! Here's to not having any more bad Mondays!

Making soap is the easiest part for me. I love creating all the delightful scents, mixing the oils and making the different designs. . It's fun to come up with the unique scent blends that only After The Rayne has.

The hardest part? Coming up with the names!

Here's where I would like your help. This is our new soap. But, I can't come up with a name!

It's a lovely blend of Patchouli, Wild Orange, Mandarin, Spearmint and Peppermint Essential Oils. It has an earthy scent with a hint of orange and a finish of mint.

I'm trying yoga for the first time. Well, not actually the first time, but I don't know if I can count the time I did a Mommy and Me yoga when my daughter was 5. The class consisted of all the mommies and ALL of these little children running around screaming and wanting to bang the instructor's gong!

It wasn't the relaxation I was looking for and I never went back. Flash forward 12 years and I've decided to give it a try again.

My cousin is a yoga instructor in Dallas and she looks amazing! When I think of yoga, I think of her. Using her as my inspiration, I decided to check out Healthy Living in Montgomery.

As you enter the yoga studio, the lights are dim, calming music surrounds you, lavender scents the air. Carolyn, the instructor, walked towards me and introduced herself. She is very soft spoken and matches the ambiance of the room.

I was originally going to bring my Wii Fitness yoga mat, but it has seen many years of me trying to work out with the Wii Fit to no avail. I decided to leave it at home. Not to worry, Carolyn had several mats that I could use.

I did not feel intimidated as I didn't know any of the positions from Downward Dog to Transcendental Artist. (Yes, I know, not a position, but I really don't know anything about yoga!)

Carolyn put me at ease with her soothing and relaxing voice and I was able to go through each exercise without a hitch. She teaches the same sequence throughout the month for beginners so that we start to learn each pose and work our bodies to be able to do them easily at months end. I must say, I like that instruction and not having to worry about new poses each class.

I left feeling relaxed and look forward to the next class.

Oh, and I have decided my favorite position so far is the Corpse Pose. That was the easiest one for me.

What a long, strange, trip it's been!

Have you ever felt like you were on a giant roller coaster and didn't know where to get off?

Well, that's how my life has been the past few years! For awhile, I didn't think the ride would ever stop. I knew I never wanted to get on one of those things again.

But, once it stopped and I was able to get my land legs back, I jumped in full force towards a new life!

And with that comes the reopening of my shop, After the Rayne! I'm so excited to be making soaps for my customers, friends and family again.

I look forward to a great 2015!

After the Rayne was named after my daughter when she was just a year old. Now she is college! Can you say time flies? Even at two with her goggles and gloves, she still gives me input on all the delectable creations we make.

Leapin' Leprechauns! It's MARCH!

It's March! Time to start sowing seeds in the garden and get ready for warmer weather. The birds are out singing, the squirrels out scampering and the dreary Winter blues get tossed aside.

We're also elated in the fact that our son who has been in Afghanistan the past 7 months with the Air Force is now back stateside safe and sound as well as his entire unit! We are so proud of all of them and what they do for us.

With Spring nearly here, it's time to try new things. I know I have started a new workout regimen with my Wii Fit Plus. Winter was too long and it caught up! It's funny how your body starts changing as we get older. When we're young and carefree, nothing seems to matter and then all of a sudden; BAM, we don't look like we did back then. But what comes with age is knowledge and it is what's inside you that counts.

Ahhh, it's March. A time for Leprechauns dancing, being wary of the Ides of March, and looking forward to an enjoyable vegetable garden.

Can't wait!

A Road Well Traveled

After the Rayne is celebrating 11 years of making handmade soaps and bath products. It doesn't seem that long ago that I was just piddling around my kitchen creating my soaps for myself because I couldn't use commercial soaps.

Throughout these eleven years, I've learned and grown so much about myself, my industry and the people around me. It has been a long road, but full of adventure and mystery. Of creating new blends and recipes and always finding joy and bliss in sharing that new scent with those around me!

I know it doesn't stop here. I am always learning and absorbing information like a sponge so I can continue to grow. I look forward to having all of you on this journey with me.

I thank my loyal customers who have been with me since the beginning and all of those who have joined along the way. You are what keep me going and I will continue to provide you with the quality and exception that you expect from me.

Here's to many more years and more fun and adventure!

I LOVE birthdays! Well, my birthday! I tell everyone it's my birthday on my day! You figure, it's the one day of the year that is YOUR day! Usually, I embarrass my family by wearing a tiara. They just walk way ahead of me or pretend they don't see me. It's not that I'm trying to embarrass them, but your birthday is a great day to give a shout out and thank your parents for bringing you into this world!

It's also not a day about seeing how many gifts you'll get or what free things you'll receive.

For me, it's just a day to say, I'm Here!

Happy Independence Day everyone! It's a wonderful day to enjoy our family, go swimming, eat barbeque or have a picnic and watch fireworks in the evening. It's also a great day to remember the 56 brave men who stood up in direct defiance of the British Government and signed the Declaration of Independence.

This goes to show that it doesn't take many to make a difference!
