I was approached by the Department of Justice some years ago to provide testimony regarding the potential Microhoo deal between Microsoft and Yahoo, along with the ad syndication deal between Google and Yahoo!.

Then, later I was approached by attorneys representing a few pension funds who were suing personnel from the yellow pages company, RH Donnelley, for misleading investors about the viability of the company.

Good point about Gawker being a muckraking site in of itself.

But there are a number of others who've done a profile on the guy that also point out that his quality is extremely poor. How about "Is Charles Johnson a Digital Darth Vader" by Politico:

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/12/charles-johnson-a-digital-darth-vader-113522_full.html

You also express a feeling that I think quite a number of people have with this story -- that "this isn't right, but the guy sorta deserves it because he did some bad things in the past."

Again, my issue with this is that if he used Ashley Madison along with the other 36 million users who were outed in the hacking scandal, that has zero connection to his service as an elector. Likewise, going through bankruptcy proceedings (which are legal, and over 800,000 people filed in 2015 alone), and operating a website business are also not connected in any way with being an elector. These sorts of background details apparently are not considerations in the selection of Republican electors in Texas, so all of this is immaterial and merely part of an effort to shame, bully, silence, and threaten this guy.

Putting up with these sorts of online abuses merely empowers further asocial behavior on the internet which are extremely damaging to individuals, and to our society. It's quite likely that Chris Suprun has grounds to sue Got News for invasion of privacy.

Referencing Gawker for character assassination isn't so helpful since they were sued into oblivion by the Hulkster. If one does not have clean hands, maybe one should not go waving them in the air to get noticed. I don't think it is right, an eye for an eye, but as a teacher told me many times growing up, "You are who you are when you think nobody is looking."

Don - it might be more motivating, sure, but my argument remains the same: someone shouldn't be vilified for things that involve their private relationship with their spouse, nor for going through a legally-allowed bankruptcy, nor for operating a website/business. None of these things are apparently dependencies/prohibitions for becoming a Republican elector.

How would you like it if someone pulled info from your private life to try to bully you into voting one way or another? Or, to retaliate because you voted one way or another?

The character assassination piece was inappropriate, period. There seems to be some feeling among Republican voters that "he has it coming to him" for defying their will. That's simply not true, although seeing him beaten up is apparently satisfying to some.

[…] Naturally, you could include all sorts of things — your street address, city, state, ZIP and phone number — but, you could also include a biographic description of yourself, links to Facebook, Twitter and other social media, photos and more! .TEL automatically displays your domain’s information on the domain URL, marked up in HTML and Card Microformat.
