“THICK OUD”

Being vacuum for a while because we are planning something heehehe. Very glad that with the new smart phone, I can update this website especially this blog at anytime and almost any places.

Well let’s start the discussion, this time is about oud oil thickness related to its quality.

I know there are several stance here.

• The people who are really emphasize and insisting that oud oil thickness is quality parameter.
• The people who are really disregard  oud oil thickness as  a quality marker.
• The people that  stance in between these two opinions.

So let’s get scientific, what cause oud to be thick?

The answer is

Polimerization

You will notice that essential oil have their life cycle, when freshly distilled it has strong and light odor, especially oud. But when it  started to age, gradually the strong and light odour dimished then “aged” notes will started to surface. The aroma would goes “deeper” meaning it instead of strong puncturing your nostril, it would be take you to go down below.

But thickening ? That not always be happening, we have an oil that we distill in 2014, quite old. But thickening never happened. Polymerization happened when 2 factors met. Oxidation and high temperature. If oil was kept properly polymerization will never happened.

So if you found an ultra thick ” oud” it may not be the oldest aged oud at all.

A trader can simply  add additive to it and or intentionally oxidize and heated the oil up to crank up the price.

As for us in agarwoodindonesia, we do not believe that thickness is the one of quality marker, rather we believe in aroma and purity are the key feature for quality.

Well after a long slumber and dormant, I am thinking of write again in this blog. The story began few months ago, when a friend from Saudi Arabia gave a a small bottle of what to be presumed as most popular oud oil in Saudi the “Cambodi Oud.” From the first sniff I understand this what the general Arab market will name it as ” Cambodi Oud” doing a simple physical test by mixing it with 96% alcohol, I had great suspicion that it is oud mixed with other things. Out of my curiousity, I brought it to the lab on February 27 for GC-MS test here are the results.

Now let us discuss about these result.Many times I argue that nose alone cannot the tools to asses the purity or genuine state of an oil, GC MS can be the jugde because it is a machine and machine doesn’t lie.

At the first of the peak we can see Dipropylene  glycol. What is this ? This is synthetic solvent. The usage of this solvent is to make the oil much sticky and long lasted. Next peak are Phenethyl methyl ketone &
Methoxycitronellal, both are synthetic aroma chemical, the second one is not found in the nature rather constructed material.

From the  next peak to ISOLONGIFOLAN-8-OL these are the agarwood oil itself, after that there is Ambrox and so on that are aroma chemical such as musk ambrette etc.  The  more frustrating part is the present of lsopropvl  myristate at 5% this is alo anothe type of solvent.

So if you count the peak from peak 6 which is Alpha Gurjunene to ISOLONGIFOLAN-8-OL, we can crudely estimate that this what so called ” Cambodi Oud” is only 26% is oud or even less. The present of esthers and acids is the sign of hardcore soaking the woods prior distillation.

The moral hazard is if this oil mostly claimed as pure and cambodi. The question is how big Cambodia forest is? And how could it withstand demand from the whole Saudi for decades?

Well this is one of your answer. Forgery and watering down.

Be a smart consumer especially when you are in the gulf countries. Because very few real things are there. The mentality getting the largest profit with victimized the consumer in oud world is a decades old, now it is the time. To you dear readers to change it.

The making of Candan Evo oud oil,  is getting out of norms. We go mostly hydro. With only 1 pot that goes water and steam. Total 11 pots. The water and steam was soak in bio reactant for 12 days, as for the 9 soaked in bio reactant for 3 days. As the last is using latest new tech which also go to hydro, which never done before.

And the result of this project  is Candan Oud Oil that project so great it is not typical close to your skin type.
You can feel the whole aura of the oil around you, and wait, it doesn’t go Papua but goes to Hindi and Indochina minus the barn! Just leathery, tobacco, chocolate and top notch jasmine. That goes together inside the oil. ” 

Now the process is still going and we will be releasing this oil on next beginning of March. So we will cure this oil and to see his potential.

In short the projection is above average also the silage. We will be making his sibling in the future but with different tweaks and way of making.  So stay tune with agarwoodindonesia.
