Arabian Oud secures Stratford Westfield, but not Harrods?

Arabian Oud recently secured their position in west field stratford, a good move to for them, due to the demographic nature. stratford is in the east side of London and is a diverse and metropolitan part of London which may encourage brand awareness and exposure of their product line to an audience that may be key customers for them.

As of last year Arabian Oud packed up shop from Edgeware Road in a bid for a position in Harrods. This was discussed with me and the plans were set as the al Thani's took over Harrods, unfortunately due to the bureaucratic nature of the process they still are not trading in Harrods, according to Arabian Oud. A move towards adaptation to the UK market has been observed, the Dehn al oud and the Bakhoor have now been exported to be sold else where on the basis that custom was down in 2010. the market is dramatically changing Arabian Ouds model, and we may see a shift towards moving away from oils and traditional smells and a step towards commercial high street fragrances.

The question is, will Arabian Oud secure their position in Harrods, or is there a conflict of interest of what Arabian Oud stands for and the Harrods customer.

'Agarwood smells like poo!'

My mother went to Dubai earlier this year and while she was there she happened to be in a perfume retailers having a browse around. Whilst browsing through the designer selections she saw 3 Emirati women make a bee-line for the Agarwood behind the counter.

Now my mother knows I have a passion for Agarwood, so she went up to the women, who bought 3 boxes of the fragrance.

My mother asked them what is so special about this smell, they told her it goes well with french perfume and makes it last longer.

When they left the shop, my curious mother asked the shop assistant to show her what the women bought, she smelt it and shreiked that 'smells like poo'.

When I heard this story it was one of those moments when I knew she was going to ask me why I like the smell of Agarwood as if I'm some mutant with a fetish to smell tree poo. The inevitable came to pass and I had to explain to my mother a few things.

1. Agarwood is a refined smell that settles on the skin and takes time to really smell good 2. It is a calming smell that relaxes you and improves your mood 3. It is a rare smell with depth 4. It is pure luxury.

The trouble is my mum smelt the top of the lid and made a decision based on the initial smell, just as I did once upon a time and I was dramatically wrong.

Oriscent - Now Ensar Oud 2011

I recently came across Oriscent's fresh new look on their website. The brand is moving away from being just another online shop to purchase Agarwood and moving towards being a brand that is represented by a real person. Perhaps they realized the fact that customers were not buying Oriscent's oils but they were buying Ensars knowledge, passion and devout nature towards Agarwood.

The new website compromises pictures taken on journey's that Ensar has taken to the far east in search of Agarwood. Oriscent has been around over seven years and has grown throughout the years. Here is a screenshot of the Oriscent website in 2004.

One thing is for certain the brand has really grown from its preliminary stage. the shift from making Oriscent into Ensar Oud in our opinion is a positive step for him.

the Oriscent website had not really changed for over three years. 'it was long-awaited' says Chris one of their current customers and followers.

Arabian Oud plan to unveil the largest oud shop in the world. The shop will be located in the Saudi Arabian capital city Riyadh. The shop will also have a museum to mark celebrated classics in their collection. The shop has a very 'Apple' theme with huge glass walls and clear open space.

Arabian Oud opened a concession in Harrods last year when the Qatari Royal family acquired it off Mohammed Alfayad. Once they acquired the position in Harrods they moved out of their shop in Edgware road.

The Arabian Oud franchise has spread over the Saudi kingdom, and is sweeping across western Europe. This shop/museum in the capital of Saudi marks an occasion of triumph for the company.

Agarwood used in Prince Williams wedding fragrance

Perfumist Kim Weisswange was assigned by the British Royal family to create a perfume for William and Kates marriage.

Weisswange was assigned initially by Prince Charles, after he smelt one of her fragrances at another royal banquet. She was assigned to create a masterpiece to mark a great day for William and Kate.

Weisswange operates in hamburg for capital cosmetics where she had worked on the fragrance for Prince William for seven weeks mixing over 90 ingredients.

Two of the main notes that stand out in this ensemble are Norfolk lavender and Agarwood.

" it is dynamic and clear, a sporty and direct fragrance" Weisswange explained about the creation. Weisswange refused to disclose how much the Royal family is paying for the fragrance of the royal wedding.

She has been known to sell her perfumes for over €50,000 ($72,000), however she also sells affordable perfumes like her eau de toilette that retails for €145 a bottle.

What do Agarwood, Parots, Tigers and Monkeys all have in common? They all live in the Jungle? They all starred in The Jungle Book? Or perhaps they all escaped Michael Jackson's ranch unscathed. An Emiriati newspaper called 'The national' released that,

"Lions and tigers are among the rare species that have been imported legally into the country this year, the organisation that regulates wildlife trade has revealed.

Falcons and parrots were the most commonly traded animals, according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites). Another common import was agarwood, which is used to make oud, and some monkeys and snakes were also brought in."

The article then goes on to say,

"Agarwood is a Cites-listed species so it requires the same papers as any of the animals listed in the convention. Most agarwood comes from trees in the wild, though some are grown in plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia.

"Countries that export agarwood have to get an annual quota for the amount they export around the world, so they have to issue an export permit from their side and we have to issue an import permit from our side before they can move the shipment."

How to deal with agarwood Farmers/Hunters

There are a lot of cheaters out there, so finding a farmer with a good reputation is paramount. That means building up rapoir and building up a portfolio of trust you find in your investigations. A usual way of investigating is finding out how the farmer markets himself. Does he work with 'affiliate marketing', i.e his neighbor started a blog because he's internet savvy and then earns a commission from the money you send over, or, you get in a cab when you get off at the airport and say to the cabby im looking for Gaharu. You also want to see who he sells to, know, he may not tell you exactly who he sells to due to loyalty to the people he works with, but you need to know he has a catalog of happy customers, who trust him and keep coming back. Communication is key in this game, and keep track of numbers, because from what I have learnt numbers are thrown in the air randomly. Try and join a community of people who have been burnt before and will share with you their trials and tribulations. You can join basenotes and participate in this thread . You can also ask them for their facebook and add them as a friend, I tend to find people can be dishonest in private but seldom can in public, so if the seller sent you pictures, of oud they are selling, if they are proud of it they will most likely display it on facebook for their peers too look in glee. If they have skype you can do a video call to make sure what you are buying is being packaged and sent to you as you see it. After all you dont want to buy something that looked resinous and when it came to you looked like dry washed up drift wood.

Buying through the Internet

First things first - Agarwood farmers want to sell in KG's, now perhaps you are just interested in a sample, maybe 10-100 grams. This is generally a big waste of time for them. They want to sell in bulk and get the big bundles of cash. You have to make it clear to them first and foremost, that you want to buy at least 1kg, and you can discuss the cost. On the basis of what you negotiated you can then request a sample, 10 grams to 100 grams. They will usually want payments in the form of Western Union or Paypal.

Buying in the country of Origin

It goes without saying that reputation among the villagers is what sets the crooks apart from the specialists. You came to the village for 1 week or 2, but the village Dog knows that farmer/hunter better than you. Where Middle Eastern customers go is not the bench mark of quality, as many Middle Eastern customers will buy scraps, have them painted and distributed back in their countries. Not to mention the cutting with boya paste.
