Princess Tutu’s paint sells for African record N508million

Ben Enwonwu’s paint of Ile-Ife princess, Adetutu Ademiluyi, known as Tutu, has fetched in a London auction £1, 205,000, four times more than expected.

In naira terms, it was sold for N508, 358, 301, an African record.

The Nigerian masterpiece, initially declared missing was found in a “modest north London flat” recently.

The painting, ranked by arts collectors with Mona Lisa, was done by Nigeria’s renowned artist late Ben Enwonwu in 1974.

Bonhams, the auction company announced the record price for the paint, which measures 97 x 66.5cm and was signed by Enwonwu and dated 1974.

The identity of the buyer of the Lot 47 has not been disclosed yet.There were other Enwonwu’s paints sold today, but none fetched anything near Tutu.

Enwonwu’s Fulani Girl fetched £13,125. Children of Onitsha got £11,250.A Driveway Ibadan fetched £12,150, while Dancers got £11,250.

Itachafo Muo, another Enwonwu’s paint was sold for £18,750. A Tree Lined Village got £40,000, Negritude £100,000 and Female Form, £110,000

The other Nigerian artist whose work was also of great reckoning during the auction was Yusuf Adebayo Cameron Grillo. His ‘Evangelists: Cymbal, Triangle and Tambourine’ done in 1964, was sold for £56,250.

Bonhams says on its website that Ben Enwonwu’s portraits of Tutu have achieved a high level of celebrity because the paintings were some of the most enigmatic works produced by a Nigerian artist in the 20th century.

In 1971, Enwonwu, who died in1994, at the age of 77, was appointed the first professor of Fine Art at the University of Ife.

A Nigerian cleric identified as Bishop Sam Zuga of the House of Joy Ministry in Benue state, is currently being bashed and heavily criticized online by some internet users after making a controversial statement on Facebook. The pastor said Muslims are better than Christians as he gave his reasons.

This did not go down well with some Christians who feel that a pastor/bishop is not meant to make such controversial statement most especially publicly due to his status.

I have been accepted to offer free medical treatment exercise in many mosques and preached in many, many Muslims do attend my church programmes all over the world, some even come to our church headquarters in Gboko, Christians can’t do that to a Muslim. The moment you mention God, a Muslim will believe you and give you attention, he will go ahead and introduce you to other Muslims and whatever he says about you they will believe him.

When you mention God to a Christian, you become a suspect, they will call council of elders to interview you to know the type of God you are talking about, whether is a Catholic Church God, Anglican, Living Faith or Deeper life. Muslims have factions like Christians, but if you don’t go deep into them, you will not know, but Christians condemned each other publicly. You can’t hear about fake imams so rampant as you hear about fake pastors. When Muslims are fasting, the whole world will know, irrespective of the factions, it used to affect so many things, there is nothing in common among Christians all over the world, even in a small village.

When a miracle is done in the name of Jesus, Muslims believe is God, some Christians will say is by the power of devil. I was going to Keffi in Nassarawa state as a Christian preacher, Muslims sat under the sun from 10 am till I arrived by 5pm, nobody left even to go and urinate, because if you do, someone will occupy your space. I turned the city of Minna Niger state upside down, Muslims were at the forefront to welcome me. Chief Imam came to trade fair complex to welcome me, CAN chairman and his cabinet were not at the venue. Muslims knee down to worship, in many churches kneeling down is embarrassment.

Muslims respect Christian clergy men, but Christians don’t even respect their pastors. Muslims obey their leaders, whatever the Imam says, it is obeyed but Christians do argue with their pastors and even engage in fights sometimes. A 21-year-old Christian YouTube starlet has shared her advice on how to become a “born again virgin”. Vlogger Milena Ciciotti, from Michigan in the US, shared tips on abstinence after getting married to her teenage sweetheart last summer.

Milena, who says she didn’t have sex until marriage, says abstaining is “worth it” – but adds that chastity can be undertaken at any age, and it doesn’t matter if you’ve had sex before.

She says in a video: “It is never too late to become a born again virgin.

“It doesn’t matter if you had sex once or 100 times and then you suddenly realise this is not what I want for myself, this is not what God wants for me and I want to make a change.

“There is nothing wrong with that. You are no more or no less of a Christian for previously having sex.

“If you decide to have a change of mind then your sins are forgiven and you can move past that.”

Milena met her husband Jordan when they were both aged 15. She says they both remained virgins until their wedding night.

The blogger, who has nearly 20,000 followers on Instagram, says her video talking about staying a virgin until marriage proved hugely popular and she was inundated with messages from followers asking her how to do the same.

Milena decided then to explain how to become a ‘born again virgin’, and how to avoid temptation and stay true.

To those who have already had sex, she says: “That is totally fine. We all make mistakes.

“It will not be easy and you two will have to work at it a little bit harder because that person has already had sex and already knows the feeling, so it is a little bit harder to put the boundary up.

“As long as that person is willing to wait for you specifically than I think that alone should tell you that ok, he or she has already forgiven themselves, I should forgive them too, God has already forgiven them.”

She advises stopping at kissing, and suggests that even lying on the sofa with a partner can bring problems. Steering clear of oral sex is also a must.

“I personally think you should stop at kissing.” Milena says. “Don’t start touching and don’t start licking. Don’t do that because once you do it is so easy to keep going and then boom.”

Whether you think Valentine’s Day is a fun way to show your partner you love them, or a pointless drain on your wallet (Scrooge), at least you have a choice as to whether or not you celebrate it.

Not so in many places, where the idea of a holiday celebrating romantic relationships – particularly those outside of marriage – is still highly controversial. Some states have gone as far as to enforce an outright ban on Valentine’s Day, whereas others discourage people from celebrating it by using force or intimidation.

As a result, celebrating Valentine’s Day – a holiday synonymous with twee sentimentality and commercialism in the UK – becomes a form of rebellion and political activism. For example, this is the second year in a row that Pakistan has banned Valentine’s – as well as any media coverage of the day – since an Islamabad court ruled that the holiday was un-Islamic.

More than 60% of the Pakistani population is under the age of 30, and generally in recent years people have embraced the showier side of the day with hearts, flowers and chocolates.

But the country has also been subjected to an onslaught of ultra-religious political activism from a relatively small, yet very vocal minority, which has branded such celebrations immoral and irreligious.

As Valentines’ popularity grew, parties such as the Taliban-linked Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam held rallies denouncing the day. In 2016, President Mamnoon Hussain urged Pakistanis to ignore Valentine’s, declaring: ‘Valentine’s Day has no connection with our culture and it should be avoided.’

Eventually, Islamabad High Court introduced the ban last year after a citizen, Abdul Waheed, filed a petition arguing that the holiday was a western cultural import, and went ‘against Islamic teachings and should be banned immediately’. In his petition, Waheed had added: ‘In cover of spreading love, in fact, immorality, nudity and indecency is being promoted –which is against our rich culture.’

As a result Pemra (the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) sent out an advisory last week warning TV and radio stations not to broadcast anything that could be seen as a celebration of Valentine’s Day.

‘No event shall be held at the official level or at any public place,’ Pemra said, including special deals offered by shops on gifts or tickets for things.

Some citizens agree, arguing that Valentine’s is ultimately a western holiday that goes against their strong religious beliefs. ‘We’re Muslims,’ Taufeeq Leghari, from Rawalpindi, told Reuters recently. ‘Our religion forbids things like Valentine’s Day.’

But Salman Mahmod, a flower seller, disagreed: ‘I don’t know what danger these Islamists would face if I earn a little more from selling flowers and someone can have a chance to celebrate something.’

And Abid Ansari, a 21-year-old university student in Islamabad, added: ‘I will celebrate. This is my choice.’ In other countries, Valentine’s Day bans aren’t necessarily enshrined in law – but unofficial restrictions are enforced by local and federal agencies, through intimidation tactics or raids.

In Iran, celebrating Valentine’s itself isn’t officially banned – but a lot of the activity associated with it is. Iranian shop owners aren’t allowed to manufacture or sell Valentine’s paraphernalia, such as boxes and cards adorned with hearts, special heart-shaped balloons, or red roses.

Plus, under the country’s strict religious laws, unmarried couples are forbidden from mingling with each other. But even for many hardliners, it’s not the idea of romantic love that is off-putting – this is the country that gave the world Rumi, after all. Instead, it’s primarily because Valentine’s specifically is seen as a western import.

‘Honouring foreign celebrations is the spread of western culture,’ Ali Nikou Sokhan, head of the printing works owners’ union, said in 2011 of the ban on special heart-printed cards and boxes.

‘Our country has an ancient civilisation and various days to honour kindness, love and affection.’

Because of this, nationalists have previously suggested replacing Valentine’s Day with a festival called ‘Mehregan’, an Iranian holiday that has been celebrated since before the introduction of Islam to the country.

Mehr can mean friendship, affection or love. Despite all of this, Valentine’s continues to be popular among young people in Iran, where 70% of the population is under the age of 30 and therefore grew up with no recollection of the 1979 Islamic revolution. Many, particularly younger citizens, have defied officials to mark the day with their significant others.

It’s a similar story in Indonesia. There is no official law against the holiday, but some pockets of the country, ruled by hardliners, enforce small-scale bans and employ intimidation tactics.

Last year for example, police in the city of Makassar raided minimarts and seized all of the condoms, claiming that they were being sold ‘in an unregulated way’ on February 14th to encourage people – particularly teenagers – to be sexually promiscuous on Valentine’s. Officials in Indonesia’s second-largest city, Surabaya, also ordered schools to enforce institutional bans on pupils celebrating the holiday. And in Banda Aceh, one of Indonesia’s most religiously radical cities, an outright Valentine’s ban was put in place in 2016.

The country’s contentious relationship with the holiday stems from a ruling by the country’s highest Islamic clerical council in 2012, declaring that Valentine’s was contradictory to Muslim culture and teachings.

However, although it is a Muslim-majority country, Indonesia is a secular nation in which religious diversity is enshrined within its state ideology. There are more than 220 million Muslims in Indonesia, but the vast majority follow a moderate form of the religion – and the country has sizeable Hindu and Christian minority communities too. So, despite intimidation in some cities, Valentine’s does continue to be popular in the rest of the country – particularly in the capital Jakarta.

In Malaysia, the country’s Islamic authorities seem to hit out at Valentine’s Day every February – to the point where it has become an annual tradition. In the past the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) blamed the holiday for everything from abortion to alcoholism – and have even suggested that celebrating Valentine’s can lead people to commit fraud, or abandon their newborn babies.

The holiday, it has said, is linked to ‘negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youths’. This stems from a fatwa issued in 2005, which ruled that Valentine’s encourages promiscuity and other immoral activity.

Although the annual anti-Valentine’s campaign is now seen as par for the course, religious conservatives are becoming increasingly outspoken in the traditionally moderate country. In 2011, officials arrested almost 100 Muslims in a major crackdown on Valentine’s Day.

They were detained for ‘khalwat’ – or ‘close proximity’ – which is the crime of being alone with a member of the opposite sex, who isn’t one’s close relative or spouse. Then, in 2014, 80 Muslims were arrested by Islamic morality police for the same reason after raids on budget hotels in Kuala Lumpur and the central state of Selangor. Any unmarried Muslim couples who were sharing rooms were detained. Muslims make up just under two-thirds of Malaysia’s total population of 28 million.

Saudi Arabia’s religious police don’t look too favourably upon Valentine’s Day either. Many public places in the kingdom still segregate people by gender (although this is slowly changing), and public displays of affection remain a huge taboo.

However, that doesn’t mean that people don’t celebrate.

Valentine’s gifts and flowers are still sold in droves, albeit under-the-counter. As with most things sold on the black market, prices are sky-high, and people wanting to place orders are encouraged to do so over the phone in order to avoid detection. But it doesn’t always work, sadly. In 2014 five Saudi men were sentenced to a total of 39 years in prison, as well as 4,500 lashes collectively, after they were found dancing with six women they weren’t related to on February 14th. Officers also seized alcohol and red roses.

But it’s not just Muslim-majority countries that have anti-Valentine’s laws or restrictions. In 2010, the Russian region of Belgorod enforced a ban on Valentine’s Day after the local governor, Yevgeny Savchenko, claimed it went against Russian cultural traditions.

‘The society has to think about the consequences’ of celebrating the holiday, the governor’s spokesman Grigory Bolotnov told Ioann news agency. He didn’t specify what these consequences were, but he did rather confusingly add: ‘We could just as well have introduced a Vodka Day.’ As a result of the ban the local zoo had to cancel promotional couples’ discounts. And a small number of far-right political parties in India have tried to enforce state-specific Valentine’s bans over the years.

In 2015, the Hindu nationalist group Mahasabha warned that any unmarried couples found celebrating the ‘foreign festival’ in public in western Uttar Pradesh would face a range of punishments – including being married on the spot.

Chandra Prakash Kaushik told the Times of India at the time: ‘We are not against love, but if a couple is in love then they must get married. In case if the couples claim that they need time to think about marriage, we will tell them that if they are not certain, they should belittle love by openly going around together. We will also inform their parents.’

And in 2009, the far-right group Shiv Sena employed moral police to intimidate women in the southern state of Karnataka into dressing modestly and avoiding pubs and bars.

The group’s leader, Pramod Muthalik, promised to marry any unmarried couples seen out together on Valentine’s Day – and even threatened violence for those seen celebrating what he argued was a western import into the country.

In response, women’s rights activists sent Muthalik a Valentine’s Day present of more than 2,000 pairs of pink underpants – known as ‘chaddis’ in India, which is also slang for a right-wing hardliner. It was known as the Pink Chaddi Campaign.

Lolu, who is said to be one of the smartest mates in the house, after the Saturday night party burst into tears until he was consoled by other housemates.

However, when asked why he cried, Lolu said he cried because the DJ that played during the house party, DJ Xclusive, mentioned his name and appreciated his effort even without his name tag.

According to him, he helped promote DJ Xclusive work back then when he was an OAP by playing his songs on air and tonight the DJ appreciated him.

Recall that Bitto, the ‘drama king’ of the house had after last Saturday night party burst into tears, blaming himself for K-Brule’s swollen knee.

COntroversial actress and musician Gloria Doyle who suddenly went MIA is back in the game.

The single mother, in an interview with Sunnewsonline, opens up on career, domestic violence and her dreams.

For so long you have been off the radar. Where were you and what is new about Gloria Doyle?
I was doing a lot of travelling and concentrating on my kids. The new thing about Gloria Doyle is that I am coming out bigger and stronger. I am dropping new singles, a full album and starting a TV Program christened, Unbroken Wings.

You were a victim of domestic violence in your previous marriage. How did you overcome?
I walked out of it with my children alive and faced the challenges, stigma and relegation of being a single mother. I took the bull by the horns for my children’s sake and never got remarried for my children’s sake as well and I am all good about it. I experienced excessive beatings for no just reason. It was very painful. I really don’t know how to explain in. I told my ex that after three years of marriage, I wanted to return to my music career and he got so mad he just couldn’t stop battering me accusing me, that I only wanted to be let loose. It was a very sad experience for me.

What is your advice to women going through domestic violence and at what point should one leave an abusive relationship?
When a relationship gets to the point of verbal abuse, which leads to physical abuse, if care is not taken, anything could happen so I strongly advice, walk out in peace and not in pieces. I have seen many young women lose their lives because they were unable to let go their abusive husband especially when they depend on their husbands for everything. Women feel very uncomfortable walking out of such relationship because of the stigma attached to being a single mother. I am talking about things like ‘oh, she is a single mother, she separated from her husband, she is a divorcee.’ Please, if you are going through an abusive relationship, separate yourself from it for a while. If it is reconcilable, all good and if it is not reconcilable, each party should move on.

Tell us about your music. You have released a new single, Baba Na You. What is happening?
I am actually in the studio working towards the release of my new album after a long break of about 12 years. I have dropped the first single and video entitled Baba Na You, which is currently enjoying airplay. The second single will be dropping by January 2018 and it is entitled Pray, while the full album will be dropping middle of next year and it is entitled New Level, and then there is the TV Talk show, U with Gloria Doyle, which will kick off next year as well and I might likely go back into acting.

What has been your happiest moment as a mother and how do you balance the home front with your career?
That was watching my children graduating from schhool without falling by the way side despite the odds. For now, my kids are all independently on their own. So, I have all the time for my music career.

Tell us about the challenges of single motherhood?
It could be quite tough and rough. The opposite sex will see you as a sex thing and people won’t take you serious and then you become both mother and father to your children, which is a very tedious task to play. In fact, It will take God’s mercy to have a good relationship because everybody wants to see you as mistress material or side chick.

There were reports a couple of years ago that you were going to marry a younger lover. What really happened?
It didn’t work out. I am not mentally settled for marriage.

Will you give marriage another chance?
Yes, I will if I come across a guy that has peace within himself

What are your dreams?
Hmmm… the dreams plenty ooo… to be a renowned minister of the gospel and generally, to be a positive contributor to my generation. I just want to see people smile.
