Ubuntu 12.10 will be supported for two years and includes cutting-edge new features that make your music, videos, documents and apps much easier to access.

There is no longer a traditional CD-sized image, DVD or alternate image, but rather a single 800MB Ubuntu image that can be used from USB or DVD. Users who previously installed using LVM or full-disk encryption via the alternate CD will find that these installation targets are supported by the consolidated image in 12.10.

With the Ubuntu 12.10, ARM desktop images are now standard Ubuntu live images as known from other architectures. To install these images you should have a USB disk as target device.

The Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal release includes the 3.5.0-17.28 Ubuntu Linux kernel which was based on the v3.5.5 upstream Linux kernel. This is an update from the 3.2.0-23.36 Ubuntu Linux kernel which shipped in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin and was based on the v3.2 upstream Linux kernel. Other notable changes with the Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal kernel include:

Transitioning of the i386 generic-pae flavor to become the generic flavor offering
Collapsing of the virtual flavor back into the generic flavor
Homogenizing the entire linux-meta package

And when you preview an app in the Ubuntu Software Centre, you can install it with just one more click.

System Requirements

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 12.10 is 768 MB of memory and 5 GB of disk space for Ubuntu Desktop. Note that some of your system's memory may be unavailable due to being used by the graphics card. If your computer has only the minimum amount of memory, the installation process will take longer than normal; however, it will complete successfully, and the system will perform adequately once installed.

China Tindak Kejahatan Dunia Maya

Beijing - Lebih dari 3.500 jejaring di China dihukum dalam satu kegiatan terhadap kejahatan di dunia maya yang diluncurkan sejak Agustus 2012, demikian pernyataan Kementerian Keamanan Masyarakat China.

Polisi China sejak Agustus memeriksa lebih dari 4.400 kasus, menangkap lebih dari 8.900 tersangka, menggerebek 700an gerombolan penjahat, dan menghapus 1,88 juta posting berbahaya di Internet.

Kejahatan di dunia maya itu meliputi penjualan senjata, penipuan, pencurian, serangan peretas (hackers), dan penjualan produk palsu, kata kementerian tersebut sebagaimana dilaporkan Xinhua, yang dipantau ANTARA News di Jakarta, Senin.

Kasus besar yang digambarkan oleh kementerian itu meliputi jaringan besar penjualan senjata di Kota Pingxiang di Provinsi Jiangxi, China timur, dan gerombolan penjahat lintas-provinsi yang terlibat dalam pencurian lebih dari 10 juta yuan (1,58 juta dolar Amerika Serikat/AS) dan bank dalam jaringan (daring) alias Internet online.

Kementerian tersebut berjanji akan meningkatkan upaya guna menciptakan keamanan dan lingkungan daring yang sehat bagi rakyat China.

The Debian project is pleased to announce the sixth update of its stable distribution Debian 6.0 (codename squeeze). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories were already published separately and are referenced where available.

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian 6.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no need to throw away 6.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update via an up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date packages to be updated.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are included in this update.

Jakarta - Perusahaan penyedia program keamanan komputer Kaspersky Lab mengembangkan layanan Kaspersky Small Office Security (KSOS) 2 yang menyasar segmen Usaha Kecil Menengah (UKM).

"Kami menambahkan perlindungan untuk server, enkripsi, kebijakan penggunaan internet bagi komputer 'user' dan manajemen kata kunci," kata Manajer Pengembangan Bisnis Kaspersky Lab untuk Indonesia, Dony Koesmandarin, tentang pembaruan KSOS 2 dari seri KSOS pertama di Jakarta, Kamis.

Kaspersky Lab, lanjut Dony, memang belum pernah meriset jumlah kerugian yang dialami segmen UKM dengan lima hingga sepuluh komputer ketika jaringan keamanan mereka diserang.

"Karena pengguna sendiri yang menentukan apakah akan menggunakan produk segmen UKM atau di atasnya yang disesuaikan dengan jumlah biaya mereka," kata Dony tanpa menyebut klasifikasi UKM yang akan disasar produk KSOS 2.

Serangan terhadap jaringan komputer UKM, menurut Dony, dapat berupa cracking, intrusion detection system (IDS), flooding attack (denial of service) atau penolakan layanan, dan yang paling utama program berbahaya (malicious software/malware).

Dony mengatakan jenis-jenis serangan itu juga sering dijumpai pada pengguna komputer personal, selain terhadap komputer dan jaringan komputer UKM.

Meskipun tidak menyebut persentase pangsa pasar, Dony mengatakan produk Kaspersky Lab yang menyasar segmen pengguna personal mempunyai pangsa pasar lebih besar dibanding produk Kaspersky yang menyasar segmen UKM.

Facebook Dituduh Sengaja Turunkan Harga Saham

Jakarta - Puluhan tuntutan hukum, terkait penawaran saham perdana (IPO) Facebook akan dikonsolidasikan menjadi satu kasus yang akan diadili di pengadilan New York.

Seorang hakim federal memerintahkan kasus yang diajukan dari seluruh Amerika Serikat tersebut bisa dialihkan ke Hakim Distrik, Robert Sweet di Manhattan, New York. Menurut Reuters, Facebook mengaku senang oleh keputusan itu dan berencana melakukan pembelaan.

Setidaknya sekitar 33 kasus tuntutan sedang menyerang Facebook menyusul IPO-nya Mei lalu.

Saham perusahaan tersebut dibuka di NASDAQ pada 38 dolar AS per lembar dan terus merosot. Kemarin, saham itu ditutup pada 21,95 dolar AS.

Para investor dan pemegang saham menuduh merosotnya saham Facebook disengaja. Apabila benar terbukti, maka Facebook bisa terkena denda jutaan dolar AS.

Hanya saja, perusahaan yang didirikan Mark Zuckerberg itu bersikeras tidak melakukan kesalahan apapun terkait turunnya harga sahamnya. Facebook justru menyalahkan NASDAQ atas kerugian tersebut.

Autodesk Klaim Punya Aplikasi Solusi Kemacetan

Jakarta - Direktur Pelaksana Autodesk Wilayah Asia Tenggara, V. R. Srivatsan mengklaim peranti lunaknya yang bernama Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler bisa menjadi salah satu solusi kemacetan di Jakarta.

"Memang tidak secara langsung jadi solusi, tapi setidaknya bisa memprediksi dampak sebuah gedung baru terhadap kondisi lalu lintas sekitar," kata Srivatsan.

Menurut dia, aplikasi tersebut bisa menjadi sebuah alat perencanaan tata kota yang baik. Terutama karena bisa memperagakan kondisi masa depan secara tiga dimensi, meski sebuah gedung belum benar-benar dibuat.

"Seperti berapa banyak mobil yang akan keluar pada jam sibuk dari dalam gedung, dan apakah akan menghambat lalu lintas, semua itu bisa disimulasikan," kata Srivatsan.

Selain kondisi kemacetan lalu lintas, dampak lain seperti ancaman banjir dan kekeringan air tanah juga bisa diprediksi lewat peranti lunak itu. Srivatsan mengharapkan Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler bisa menjadi solusi berbagai masalah di Jakarta khususnya yang terkait pembangunan gedung.

Intel Luncurkan Mobil Internet Keliling Di Medan

Medan - Intel dan Telkom meluncurkan "Zona Seru Cerdaskan Bangsa" di Medan, sebuah pusat pembelajaran berteknologi tinggi di dukung koneksi broadband yang hadir dalam bentuk minibus dengan nama mobile Broadband Learning Centre (mBLC) atau Mobil Internet Keliling (moling).

"Minibus ini dipersenjatai lengkap dengan PC dan berbagai perangkat keras lain dari merek-merek OEM pendukung seperti Acer, Axioo, Lenovo, Asus dan Toshiba. MBLC-Moling akan mengunjungi beberapa tempat yang menjadipusat keramaian di Medan," kata Public Relation Manager Intel Indonesia, Dhyoti R Basuki, di Medan, Sabtu.

Ia mengatakan program tersebut merupakan kelanjutan dari proyek serupa yang diadakan di Jawa Tengah awal tahun ini. Didukung oleh intel dan koneksi Telkom Speedy True Broadband, program itu juga melibatkan dukungan FIF spektra untuk alternativ pembelian komputer secara kredit.

Menurut dia pendidikan selalu menjadi fokus utama intel di Indonesia dan pihaknya berkomitmen untuk membantu meningkatkan kompetisi di negara ini. Dengan program ini, pihaknya berharap tidak hanya menjembatani kesenjangan digital, namun juga berkontribusi dalam peningkatan penggunaan teknologi komputer di seluruh negeri.

"Kami ingin menunjukkan bahwa belajar menggunakan komputer dan internet merupakan kegiatan yang menyenangkan bagi murid, guru, orang tua serta kalangan umum," katanya.

Mobil Internet keliling tersebut akan memiliki memiliki tujuh kru , termasuk tiga staf penjualan, seorang kapten dan seorang pengemudi. Ditiap kota, mobil tersebut akan mengunjungi tempat-tempat umum, seperti sekolah, pemukiman dan pusat kota atau alun-alun.

Tim yang terlibat dalam mobil internet keliling tersebut akan mengadakan aktivitas spontan yang melibatkan pengunjung dan warga sekitar, serta mengadakan pelatihan di sekolah bagi guru dan murid di bidang pendidikan dan teknologi.

Kepala Kantor Telkom Medan Imanuddin dalam kesempatan yang sama mengatakan menggunakan teknologi di darah terpencil di Indonesia sebagai salah satu upaya pihaknya untuk meningkatkan pengalaman belajar bagi masyarakat.

"kami berharap melalui program ini masyarakat akan menjadi lebih tertarik untuk menemukan cara baru untuk belajar, serta mendapatkan alternatif kesempatan untuk bisa terhubung," katanya.

Sebagai tambahan, lanjut dia, disetiap perberhentian di sepanjang rute perjalanan, mobil internet tersebut akan mengundang masyarakat untuk turut berpartisipasi dalam fun singing dan photo contest.

"Sementara itu mereka yang tertarik pada bidang jurnalistik juga mengikuti audisi untuk menjadi penyiar berita," katanya.
