I logged in to SWTOR to work on a couple of quests with my Jedi Sentinel in Alderaan and within only about 10 minutes, I was reminded of just how much more pleasant “questing” is in Guild Wars 2. In SWTOR, I was tasked to retrieve something from a Killick, and when I attacked it, a few more weaker versions erupted from the ground. My usual tactic is to kill off the weaker mobs and then put all my focus on the strong one once they are down. Doing so tends to mitigate the overall damage more than letting them all beat on me while killing the strong one.

Well I started working on the weaker mobs and started having targeting issues. Why couldn’t I target some of them? There was some delay while I tried to sort it out in my mind, and then while I was taking more damage than if I hadn’t had an issue, I suddenly realized that these weren’t Killiks I was trying to target, they were another player and companion rudely interfering with my quest. Once this unwelcome other player had ungraciously “helped” me with my mobs and started running around the area again, I felt obligated to wait until this annoying person had left the area before continuing with my quests, lest he or she interfere once again and just make me mad rather than simply annoyed.

It already irks me that I feel I have to wait for them to leave in the first place before I can continue to enjoy my own game, but the fact is that I don’t enjoy my game when other players interfere and rob me of my time and kill credit. (If I’m the one who spawns a group of mobs for my quest, it’s mine. I shouldn’t have to risk failing my quest and/or taking other damage by spending time tagging every mob in my group so some rude person doesn’t come up and steal half of it from me, and thus make my quest take longer.)

It is SO SO SO SO SO SO WONDERFUL to not have to worry about this sort of interference in Guild Wars 2. It doesn’t matter what other players do or don’t do in Guild Wars 2 because they can’t negatively interfere with anything, and because of this lack of negative interference, other players in the area are truly helpful and nice to have around rather than being another potential annoyance to be avoided at all costs as they often are in SWTOR and other similar MMOs.

Well I think this miserable other person in SWTOR has finally left my quest area while I was writing this post, so I should be able to complete my quests in peace, at least until another person shows up and somehow believes focusing on my mobs instead of the zillions of others in the area is a good thing.

Guild Wars 2 is so much less stressful when it comes to other players.

Let me finally talk about Guild Wars 2 since it’s been out for a few days. I’ve often thought (and sometimes directly stated) that I would love to be able to play an MMO that did not have raiding as an ultimate end-game objective. In fact, I wanted to play an MMO that did not include organized raiding at ALL in any form. I’m just not a real fan of raiding, so my interest in an MMO typically declines after I get near or at the point where my characters will need to begin regularly raiding in order to make more progress. If a game has other stuff to do besides raiding, then that other stuff will hold my interest for a while, but in the back of my mind, I know that it’s still going to end up being all about raiding and the raid grind unless I purposely hold back my characters from reaching max level, as I’ve done in Everquest 2. I focus more on crafting and quests there, and attempt to ignore the raid game as much as possible.

I’m mostly a solo player. I don’t mind big raid group events on a once-in-a-while basis when the rare mood hits me, but raiding in general requires regular commitment to particular times and to bunches of other people. I don’t want to have to obligate myself to regularly playing with a large group of people that often. I get too burned out when there are so many days when I am extremely sick and exhausted of being around people and just want to play by myself or with a small group of friends during my free time. MMO’s that include raiding ultimately do not allow this type of relaxation after a certain point. Although one may argue that we are not forced to raid in MMOs, and that we can choose to do other things in the game besides raiding, the raid game still ends up being the major focus and requires a large chunk of game dev attention.

So my long-time desire has been for a large-scale MMO that just didn’t have any raids at all. No raids. No raiding guilds. No dev focus on raids. No equipment or benefits that only raiders can get. None. Nothing. Nil. Much to my delight, Guild Wars 2 has so far fulfilled this wish for me. My greatest fear now is that players will whine so much about no end-game content (specifically raids), that the devs will cave and put them in, kind of like Mythic did with Dark Age of Camelot back when Trials of Atlantis was released and raiding was then made a requirement for Realm vs. Realm. The fact that the devs didn’t include raiding in Guild Wars 1 continues to give me hope it won’t happen in the long-term.

In fact, the only things that I find to be lacking in Guild Wars 2 are more of the sandbox features such as player housing. Supposedly, it’s on the dev list for later though. If housing and other similar sandbox features get implemented, Guild Wars 2 may very well end up being the perfect MMO for me. NO organized raiding! NO holy trinity! YAY! I can play any character and not be held back because I leveled up a gimp class.

I do think I will revise some of my current gaming goals though since there is only time for so much. In SWTOR, I’m going to drop my PvP goals for now and just focus on PvE storylines. I haven’t been playing Sacred since I started focusing more on Fallout 3, so I’ll put that game on the temporary back burner. Because of the MMO’s, I’m having some difficulty keeping up with more than one single player game. I plan to continue focusing on Fallout 3 until I’ve explored everything and gotten every achievement, and then I’ll likely focus back on Morrowind again. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

The best thing in the entire game so far has happened. After finally getting off of the alien spaceship, I took a bit of a detour through the Scrapyard and found Dogmeat! Yay! He is so cute and oh so very helpful too, fetching food and ammo, and especially taking down super mutants, raiders, feral ghouls, and anything else that gets in our way. Dogmeat is probably my favorite character in the entire Fallout series. He was a loyal companion back in Fallout (can’t remember whether it was 1 or 2), and I think I literally cried when he had an accident with a force field that I couldn’t get him through. I had to choose to leave him and move on. There were lots of forum posts that I saw later where people were coming up with all sorts of convoluted solutions to get Dogmeat through that force field, and I do know there was at least one solution that actually worked. By the time I’d read about it though, I’d already finished the game.

And now in Fallout 3, a descendant of the original Dogmeat lives on. I am so happy to have him! And also happy that, unlike the earlier Fallouts, my companions don’t bite, scratch, hit, and shoot me in the back when we get put into a combat situation. There may be a few things about the original Fallout games that I miss, but the super-slow, turn-based, friendly-fire combat is not one of them.

After getting Dogmeat as a companion, I decided it was time to get back to the main quest for a while. I hadn’t gotten very far into it before I deviated into a few side quests as well as doing some of the downloaded content packs that came with my Game of the Year version of the game. I’m not quite sure why I did them first. I think maybe because I was tired of seeing all those undone entries clogging up my quest journal and just needed to complete them.

I suppose I should say something about the character I’m currently playing in Fallout 3. His name is Daen and he specializes in small guns and energy weapons, and is learning a good deal about explosives. He’s also very good at the stealthy skills of sneak, lockpick, and hacking into computer terminals. He’s not bad at fixing up a few wounds either. I have an extremely difficult time playing mean characters, so he’s a paragon of virtue in power armor, always willing to help anyone in need that he meets. I’ll have to play a meaner character in my second game in order to get the Paradise Falls achievement (as Daen ended up just killing all of the raiders), but I have a feeling I won’t play that character for very long past that point unless there’s another achievement later on that I end up missing. I’ll be with Daen for the long haul, and I know that he’ll take very good care of Dogmeat.

Now Dogmeat and Daen are in the process of helping some people through a tunnel, and have already run into some nasty things. Dogmeat being there makes being in the tunnel a whole lot nicer though! Good doggie!

Today has been a good day so far in Fallout 3, at least as good as a day can be in a post-apocalyptic world where hostile and mutated creatures and raiders roam the desolate wastelands. I’ve been working my way through The Pitt add-on, taking extra breaks along the way due to the extra bleakness and creepiness of the locale. I completed it today and have to admit that as scary as it was, I liked it. It actually reminded me of a dream I had a few months ago where I was being taken to a prison for a crime I didn’t commit. The prison area was deep underground and very dark. The prisoners there were very grimy and those who had been there longer-term had lots of skin abrasions all over their faces from the skin just going away. Outside of appearance, the prisoners seemed very nice and helpful. I suppose I should have been terrified and considered the dream to be a nightmare, but I was far too fascinated by it all, and the whole feeling of gloominess and resignation, and was kind of annoyed when I woke up. The Pitt had much similarity, but was entirely coincidence as I knew nothing about it at the time of my dream.

After completing The Pitt, I decided to take a trip back to Point Lookout and finish up the quests there. When I started them, I had no idea how much more difficult the mobs are in that location, so was getting really damaged and running out of supplies. The very moment I was able to get back to the mainland, I did and went back to my Megaton house and went about doing other things for a while. So today I went back and tied up some loose ends. I’ve since left Point Lookout again, but I will need to go back to discover all the remaining locations and see what is there. I found a hint to a possible side quest or side activity too that I will need to investigate. Plus, I now have an extremely helpful item that I received elsewhere (that I didn’t have the first time I visited) that will make exploring much less dangerous and damaging.

Now I have to make the decision to go investigate an alien signal (one of the other add-on options) or continue with the next step of the main quest. Because I have been sidetracked by many things, and I tend to try to explore everything, I really haven’t gotten very far with the main quest. I guess that’s a good thing anyway since unlike The Elder Scrolls games, Fallout 3 actually ends at the end rather than allowing us to keep playing after the main quest is done.

I’m in the midst of creating a monster. A monster made up of a whole bunch of games and a limited amount of time to play them all. Or at least to focus on them all, since theoretically, I *can* play them all…just not all at once. For example, I started playing Morrowind a few days ago since I bought it off of a Steam sale and I no longer had the excuse to procrastinate reinstalling it because of all the discs. I’d also started playing Sacred. Because of these games, I’ve had no opportunity to go into SWTOR and complete some of my objectives there.

On top of it all, I got a new TV yesterday, so to try it out, I put my Fallout 3 disc back into my Xbox 360 after hooking it up to the TV, and spent a bunch of time trying to remember how to play that game and what I was doing when I stopped playing a few months ago (having gotten distracted by other things of course), and so now that I’ve gotten that all (mostly) figured out again, I’m wanting to get back into *that* game too. It looks fantastic on the new TV by the way.

Then there’s Guild Wars 2. Yes, I’ve finally pre-ordered it. I had meant to pre-order it from the time I first heard of Guild Wars 2 many months ago, and my intent was to get a bunch of stuff done in Guild Wars 1 for the Hall of Monuments. You know how many points out of 50 I’ve so far gotten towards the Hall of Monuments? Three to be exact. I may have a couple or more points floating out there for once I actually find the HoM in the game as I haven’t yet set foot in the Eye of the North expansion, but my plan for gaining HoM points turned out to be a dire one. Well Guild Wars 1 is supposed to hang around for a while and I can still get HoM points even after Guild Wars 2 begins, but we’ll see if that ever happens.

Why can’t I be the type of person to pick something and stick with it until there is nothing left to do and I am obligated to move on? On a good note, I absolutely never get bored, so I think I’d rather have my problem.

Even though I’ve played Morrowind on and off since it came out about ten years ago, I still managed to get lost on my way back from Hla Oad to Balmora. After completing a task in Hla Oad, I decided to find this “track” that followed along the river to Balmora. When I arrived in Hla Oad from Balmora, I just went over the hills and cut across the plateau at approximately the location where Hlaalu stronghold would be built for characters who decide to join that faction. I never saw a “track” anywhere that various townsfolk kept talking about when giving me directions.

In Hla Oad, I found a road that was near the river, and a sign that pointed down it that said Balmora and set off alternating between walking and running, depending on fatigue level. After a short stop at an ancestral tomb where I felt extremely thankful that I’d had the foresight to make custom spells that restored various atributes for the total cost of 1 mana point, I began to think that I had been walking for far, far longer than it should take to reach Balmora. I’d already been on the road twice as long as my earlier cut through the hills, but when I came across another signpost, the sign there insisted I was heading towards Balmora. I pressed on.

I couldn’t find any more signposts, but when I look at the world map, it says I’m now heading to Caldera and am somewhere northwest of Balmora. So much for that “track” that goes directly to Balmora from Hla Oad! Well, since I had a fighter’s guild quest for Caldera in my journal, I thought that I’d keep going that way since it would have been my next quest choice anyway. It wasn’t long afterwards that I stumbled into the Caldera Mine encampment. Nimleth’s fatigue bar was down to zero because I had run in that direction thinking that it was the actual town of Caldera, and his health and mana were down quite a bit too from fights along the way. Even though my quest was near the mines, I really wanted to get to town to restock and refresh before beginning something new.

Then I somehow couldn’t figure out how to get to the right road from the mine encampment. I circled around and around the place trying to see if there was some small path somewhere that I missed. It’s not like it was a hidden encampment, so why the heck was it so difficult to find the way out. The most obvious way was back the way I came, but that was in the opposite direction of where I wanted to go. So then I thought, “heck with it all,” and used the very last bit of Nimleth’s mana on a levitate spell. I’d made a custom spell that gave 5 levitate for 11 seconds and only cost 1 mana. His spellcasting isn’t very high, so the 1 mana is great for all the fizzles.

After levitating over the top of the mountain, I finally found the real town of Caldera. Yay! Once I reached the town, I decided to backtrack down the road to see just how it connected to the mine encampment and found out that the road connected to the road that had been back the way I came when inside the encampment, so that’s why I couldn’t find any other way out of there.

Along this route, I discovered a *very* naked Nord standing next to the road, and I mean VERY naked. See, I’d previously installed a mod called Better Bodies with the purpose of smoothing out the rough edges in the character models, but the fact that the mod also removes the really ugly undergarments didn’t really phase me as I hadn’t noticed them anyway in the course of the game so far. Well I really noticed it this time when passing this Nord because not only was he naked, he was also anatomically correct! I’d completely forgotten that quest was there, so it definitely took me by surprise. It also took me a while to stop laughing.

Finally, I headed back to Caldera to allow Nimleth a well-deserved rest at last. He didn’t even get attacked by assassins this time after renting a bed at the inn. The last time he’d slept, he got attacked three times before he could sleep without interruption. Perhaps tomorrow Nimleth will go back to the mining encampment now that he knows how to get there and back. However, I think I’ll have him use the mage transporter to get back to Balmora once he’s done. I definitely do not want to end up in Hla Oad once again!

It’s so neat to be able to get lost in a game without having everything pointed out to me at all times. Sure, I could have used a Divine Intervention scroll to instantly port to the nearest Imperial Outpost, but I was having too much fun bumbling around in the wilderness and dodging those pesky cliffracers and nix-hounds. As lost as I got, one might think I was playing a ranger instead of an assassin!

Morrowind remains one of my most favorite games of all times. I’ve played through the main quest a couple of times, and started over bunches more times, and played around in the expansions a bit, but after everything, I still haven’t gotten through both expansions. So I’ve started this game up yet again with the intention of finally playing through everything. Being that it’s an Elder Scrolls game, there really is no ending, so “everything” is something of a misnomer, but I’m going to give it my best attempt.

The very first thing I did though was download a few mods to make my character look unique from the rest of the Morrowind population. I typically don’t use a huge amount of mods in my games during an initial playthrough (and I’m counting this time as a playthrough since I’ll be playing much of the expansions for the first time), so the mods I use are primarily cosmetic and not game-changing. Book rotate and armor mannequin mods are also must haves. The ring fix made it in too, since it fixes a texture problem that makes rings look black instead of having their original bright and shiny textures that the game developers intended. Morrowind to this very day has a fantastic mod community.

So this time around, I recreated my Dunmer Assassin, Nimleth. I always seem to make Nimleth for every Elder Scrolls game even if I later make other types of characters too. He’s always an Assassin and always a dark elf, and when I say “assassin”, I mean the standard template and not a custom class. My reason for him is that he was the character I made in Daggerfall, my first Elder Scrolls game, and so when Morrowind first came out, I made him there too. He was also my character in Oblivion as well, and I suspect when I get back to that game again (I recently bought it for the Xbox 360 too), he’ll have yet another go round in Tamriel.

I don’t really have much of a backstory for Nimleth like I do with most of my other characters in other games. He’s always an assassin class, but he also ends up kind of “paladin-y” and knight-like and joins every guild available to him in the game. In Morrowind, he always joins House Redoran instead of House Hlaalu or House Telvanni since without mods, characters can only join one of the three. He’s also been a vampire a time or two. But even without the backstory, I have gotten pretty attached to him and it just doesn’t seem right to have an episode of the Elder Scrolls without some form of him there. He’ll be moving along to Skyrim eventually! Maybe one day, more of a backstory for him will reveal itself to me, but for now he’ll continue to be a wandering stranger.

So of course when Nimleth first sets foot into the swamp village of Seyda Neen, one of the first villagers he greets is that good old, oftentimes annoying, wood elf, Fargoth. Fargoth (and all the male wood elves for that matter) is still to this day trying to get very close to Nimleth. Nimleth tends to not get too involved in close relationships of any sort though, so Fargoth will continue to be disappointed, alas!

Everything’s about wrapped up in Seyda Neen now though. The few quests are completed and the local bandit cave cleared out. Getting through that cave was actually pretty difficult since Nimleth was just wearing regular clothes and using that iron dagger that he picked up during the brief tutorial. I had hoped to find more armor and maybe a better weapon for him in that cave, but there wasn’t much of value inside other than a pair of boots and a bracer. Before I resigned myself to buying him armor at the trading post, an assassin kindly attacked him overnight and provided him with some better stuff. Even though there might be honor among thieves where they don’t steal from each other, there seems to be no such honor among assassins. Oh well! It worked out for Nimleth in the end.

Next will be a silt strider ride to Balmora! (Not to be confused with Balmorra in SWTOR)

Or is that really the sound of Imperials being crushed by the Republic forces? Today was one of those days where Sabine went into the game to do her PvP daily, and then her teams went on to lose all six warzones in a row. All six! She didn’t even get any medals in the first one. What happened was about two minutes into the warzone, we started losing, and then five out of the eight people just gave up and went to stand over at our single turret to get defender medals, leaving three of us to try to complete objectives against a very well organized team of eight. One of the people at the turret said they weren’t going to fight to because there was no point in doing so against two of the people on the other team. They didn’t even try because they apparently believed these two people were invincible or something! Grrr, how frustrating!

Even with only three of us fighting…that soon turned into only two of us as the third decided there was no point without the rest of the team, Sabine managed to get credit for four kills amidst her many gang bang deaths. She even almost stealth-stole one of their turrets. Considering there were only two to three of us *at max* fighting this other team, we still managed to do a little bit of something. I can’t help but think if our entire team actually decided to help go after the objectives instead of standing huddled together at a turret without even trying when the game wasn’t even half over, we might have had a good game even if we still lost. Unfortunately, nothing Sabine managed to do was enough to gain even one medal, so that game was kind of a waste from the beginning outside of learning that some people just give up way too easily.

Well it certainly couldn’t have gotten any worse, so the other games fared a bit better. At least people were trying to do stuff in those even if we still ended up losing. Most of those losses were due to disorganization more than anything else, though there were a couple games where we had people who had never done any warzones before, so that disadvantage only added to the disorganization. It still wasn’t as bad as that first game BY FAR. Everyone has to start somewhere, so even if the team is a bit weaker for it, I don’t mind it a bit compared to people who just give up when the game has barely started, or when there is still opportunity to turn the tide.

On a much better note, Sabine got her first piece of war hero equipment last night! She is now the proud owner of a war hero stalker’s saberstaff!

I still had fun in most of the warzones (except that first one), but once Sabine’s daily was completed, I decided I’d had enough of the Imperial side for today and decided to work on a few more quests with Jai’zhi, my Jedi Knight Sentinel (pictured above) who is currently level 32 and recently landed on Alderaan. Jai’zhi is actually a version of my character Zhiquiang (or Zhi), my Monk in Everquest 2. You can read the bio I made for him here. The Jedi seemed to be the most monk-like classes in SWTOR, and so far the class seems very fitting for him.

I didn’t actually intend to create Jai’zhi at first. I had been playing through some quests with Sabine and about to quit the game for the night when I decided to play with the character creator to get an idea of what I wanted my Trooper to look like. See, I’d intended to make a Trooper after getting Sabine to level 50, so my plan was to see if I could get the look right for him/her. At that point, I hadn’t decided on gender. Well somehow my Trooper ended up to not be a trooper, but be a Jedi Knight instead, and somehow that Jedi Knight turned out to be a representation of my Monk character, Zhi.

I did eventually make the Trooper. She is currently level 1 and still at the very beginning after the first cut scene. Eventually, I’ll be able to play her, but I decided when I started this game that I wasn’t going to let my tendency toward alt-itis get the best of me too soon, and so I’m not planning to play her until Zhi gets to 50 at the earliest. Once that happens, I’ll have a level 50 on both the Imperial and Republic sides and should be able to qualify to get the upcoming HK-51 droid companion.

So the first thing I do after logging onto SWTOR this evening is grab Sabine’s PvP daily and jump into the warzone queue. Naturally, my first game ends up being huttball. Apparently, I am being punished by the gods for having avoided huttball yesterday only to have it not only be my first warzone for today, but also having to play it twice. Twice!

The first game was a disaster. I couldn’t seem to maneuver very well with my mouse, and ended up passing the ball over to an enemy player. Granted, I was stunned and couldn’t figure out my directions, but that’s pretty much how the entire game went for me. Novarre Coast being my second game wasn’t much better. I couldn’t scratch the healer I was targeting and kept getting stunned and killed. Somehow I managed to get a few medals and not come in last place though.

Then I was in huttball again. (Alas!) This game went much, much better. I passed the ball across the channel to the person on my team who then scored, and not too much longer, I managed to score myself! Yay! Though that game still kind of traumatizes me, being on a team that was working together the way we were doing was really pretty nice.

Navarre Coast was next once again and *that* game also went very well for me! So my daily ended on a good note from an unpleasant beginning.

Once Sabine’s daily was done, I logged on with Jai’zhi to work on some quests on Tatooine, and completed a couple before getting distracted by the Torchlight game I have running on my 360. It’s a pretty nifty game that I’ll write about in another post. I’ve been taking my time on Tatooine because I really, really like that planet and the jawas are sooo cute! They remind me so much of ratongas in EQ2 that it seems that I sometimes see furry little noses with whiskers rather than big glowing eyes under their hoods.

On a different note, I’ve decided to list my primary gaming goals and progress for my current games at the bottom of each of my posts. At first, I was just going to list those things for whatever game I posted about that day, but I think doing it that way could get more confusing since I’m not always posting about the same game. Note that I do have other goals as well as some other games, but I’m limiting my list to my top few goals at any given time.
