Hay momentos en la vida en que la emoción por haber conseguido algo es rápidamente eclipsada por la realización de las implicaciones que tiene ese acontecimiento.

En el mundo académico y de la investigación se sufre mucho por tener ideas originales que luego se traduzcan en experimentos con resultados favorables,¹ para luego redactar y poder divulgar en una conferencia o revista científica. Aunque todo parece bastante sencillo y directo, desde la idea hasta la publicación hay suficientes tropiezos para que cualquiera se dé por vencido.

Uno de tales tropiezos es la revisión por pares. La forma en cómo funciona la ciencia es que entre todos nos revisamos el trabajo para evitar llegar a conclusiones erradas por problemas metodológicos, sesgos, e incluso evitar el fraude – es más común de lo que se cree. Sin embargo, frecuentemente esta revisión a ciegas (es a ciegas porque no sabemos quien la hace) le da un poder al revisor para exigir cosas imposibles, para hundir el trabajo o exigir que le citen sus respectivos articulos. Como todo ocurre de manera anónima, no hay temor por ser descubierto.

El otro problema es el dinero – como suele ser. Parece mentira, pero en todo el proceso que describí brevemente al principio de esta entrada, se requiere de ciertos recursos para poder llevar a cabo satisfactoriamente. Si el trabajo es experimental se requieren más recursos. Si es teórico o computacional, se requieren menos, pero evidentemente algo se necesita.

El caso de estos últimos días es el siguiente. La alegría por la aceptación de un paper en una conferencia internacional eclipsado por el estrés por conseguir recursos para asistir al evento. El paper representa un trabajo arduo con estudiantes de pregrado (que no son investigadores), de ahí el valor especial por el proceso formativo en introducirlos en la investigación.

El evento es el SIPAIM 2015 que tendrá lugar en noviembre en Cuenca, Ecuador. Estamos intentado conseguir apoyo por medio de la universidad² pero no es fácil justificar un gasto de estos, sobre todo si no se cuenta con un proyecto activo con financiación externa.

Ya les contaré si termino yendo a Ecuador a presentar el trabajo.

Por resultados favorables se suele entender que se demuestra la hipótesis o se prueba algo que empíricamente sabíamos. Esto no siempre es así y aunque sería bueno, casi nadie acepta la publicación de resultados negativos. ↩

El mundo de Alo y Nico

Hace unas semanas mi esposa revivió un blog que había creado en el 2011 y al que no le había dedicado más que una entrada. El blog, que lleva por título El mundo de Alo y Nico, tiene la intención de documentar un poco nuestras vivencias en lo que respecta a criar a nuestros hijos. Nuestras decisiones y reflexiones.

Se me olvidaba comentar que yo también soy autor del blog. Aquí puedes encontrar mi primera entrada. Quise hablar sobre desvelar algunas cosas que a primera vista parecen inalcanzables para nuestros hijos, y que con un poco de empeño y buena instrucción se pueden alcanzar.

Plantilla LaTeX en Overleaf para informes de laboratorio

Una de las grandes barreras de entrada a LaTeX era lo relacionado con la instalación y compilación de documentos. LaTeX técnicamente no es un lenguaje de programación, pero para efectos prácticos es indistinguible de uno. Y esto complica un poco su utilización al principio, muchos abandonan y regresan a seguir peleando con MS Word. (Para quien esté perdido, “LaTeX es un es un sistema de composición de textos, orientado a la creación de documentos escritos que presenten una alta calidad tipográfica”. Hace no mucho escribí una entrada sobre cómo creo mi cv en LaTeX – la calidad es sin igual.)

Para solventar el problema de la instalación, y abrir nuevas oportunidades en la creación y edición de documentos se creó el servicio overleaf (antiguamente WriteLatex). Esencialmente es un editor de LaTeX en la web que compila el documento en la medida en que se va escribiendo. A continuación un ejemplo:

Una de las ventajas que ofrece es la disponibilidad de plantillas, listas para usar para preparar todo tipo de documentos. Desde artículos hasta tesis de doctorado y presentaciones. De hecho ya la mayoría de universidades del mundo han subido sus plantillas a la plataforma. Cualquier estudiante sólo tiene que iniciar un proyecto con la plantilla que desee y después sólo tiene que preocuparse por el contenido del documento, no la apariencia. Ese es el atractivo de LaTeX.

Este semestre cree una plantilla en Overleaf para que mis estudiantes del curso de visión artificial prepararan sus informes de laboratorio. Pueden ver la plantilla en siguiente enlace.

In Praise of Slow

I have a recurrent discussion with my wife.

She likes to do most things as fast as possible.

I like to pause and think about things, and do them often slowly. At my pace.

I think that if you do things too quickly you might not be fully aware of what you’re doing.

You might feel that you are not really in charge of your life.

You might feel that you can’t really remember things truly.

Like nothing becomes a memorable experience.

You have no time for metacognition and self-awareness.

I wrote these lines before finding out about this book In Praise of Slow by Carl Honoré. It seems this has inspired the slow-movement which tries to raise awareness of how we need to take it easy and enjoy life. Like the saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing slowly.

It seems I have a new book to read.

De cero a uno

Hace unas semanas estuve conversando con un amigo del departamento donde hice mi doctorado en España. Le estuve comentando sobre mi trabajo acá en la universidad en Colombia y cómo estaba todavía intentando arrancar con proyectos y la investigación.

Él me dijo algo que me hizo reflexionar y es el mensaje que quiero compartir en este entrada. Pasar de cero a uno es infinito, de uno a dos es sólo uno. Arrancar, comenzar, escribir la primera línea con la hoja en blanco, crear de la nada, cuesta mucho y efectivamente a veces parece un esfuerzo infinito. Cuando ya se ha comenzado con algo, seguir haciéndolo cuesta menos.

He estado buscando financiamiento, sin éxito, para algunos proyectos de investigación que hemos planteado entre varios profesores. Buscar financiación no es cosa fácil y es el gran dilema de los investigadores. A veces siento que no debo enfocarme sólo en la financiación. He decidido centrarme en algunas cosas más elementales, trabajar con las uñas si es necesario, pero sobre todo, hacer limonada con los limones que he recibido.

Ya he comenzado con algo. No es mucho, pero el infinito se está haciendo más pequeño.

Como parte de mi trabajo en la universidad, antes de iniciar un semestre entrevistamos a los aspirantes a estudiar ingeniería. Hay una pregunta concreta que se les hace sobre sus cualidades y qué los hace ser quienes son. La verdad es que la mayoría no saben qué responder, se quedan sin palabras – y sin adjetivos – para describirse a si mismos.

¿Pero, por qué no somos capaces de describirnos adecuadamente? En mi humilde opinión, porque por ser uno mismo, rara vez se detiene uno a pensar sobre quien es y lo que uno hace. Ni qué decir de actividades propias de auto-reflexión o meta-cognición. A veces les pregunto, ¿tienes un hobby? ¿Practicas algún deporte? ¿Haces algo, además de ir al colegio, dormir, comer y ver televisión? Todos deberíamos tener un hobby,¹ pues ayuda a definirnos y a conocernos mejor. Muchos reconocen que no tienen ninguno.

Cuando hablo con un aspirante que reconoce tener un hobby noto claramente una persona con una actitud diferente para con la vida. Por lo general, resulta ser una persona más interesante y agradable para conversar – digamos que tiene algo de qué conversar.

Tener un Hobby significa dedicarle un tiempo importante a algo sin remuneración alguna, tan sólo por el interés y la pasión que lo motiva a uno. Es algo que uno hace por amor al arte, como se suele decir, y eso sí que lo define a uno, sin lugar a duda.

El efecto limpiador

La ilusión de lo que podría ser, siempre es más grande y poderosa que la realidad de lo que realmente termina ocurriendo.

La sensación sublime de la simplicidad. La elegancia de lo sencillo. Compartir un café en el ultimo par de tazas que no empacas porque están medio rotas. Deshacerte de todo aquello que es superfluo es liberador.

Cada dos o tres años deberíamos mudarnos de lugar, no por el estrés del viaje sino por el efecto limpiador. Simular el viaje puede ser más práctico, limpiamos nuestra casa y el espíritu también – sin el estrés por supuesto.

Los diseñadores modernos (y los japoneses de toda la vida) son conscientes de la importancia del espacio vacío. Llenar de nada un espacio es resaltar lo verdaderamente importante.

A veces llenamos nuestras vidas de tantas cosas cuando en realidad para vivir bien sólo necesitamos unas pocas. También llenamos nuestras vidas de todo lo que nos llega porque pudiera ser importante, porque lo podría necesitar después, muy dentro de nosotros sabemos qué vale la pena guardar y qué no.

I’ve always thought that education is about learning, as much as parenting is about maturing and growing up. On the parenting side, you can’t really teach your kids how to live – you can’t even imagine the kind of world they will have to live from the time they’re born – but you can expose them to the best things you know. In doing so, they can at least have the chance to form an opinion on the many matters of life, they’ll surely make mistakes, but I bet they won’t regret much.

Education is a difficult topic. Everyone has something to say about it, yet no one seems to have true answers. I do think that education is much more about being exposed to something, rather than being taught that something. There’s an incredible difference between the two things.

El Marciano: supervivencia al máximo.

El Marciano por Andy Weir.

Comencemos el 2015 con una excelente recomendación. Hace unos días comencé a leer¹ una de las historias más fascinantes que he leído en los últimos tiempos. Una historia de ciencia ficción, pero que resulta ser tan “real” que podría pasar fácilmente por una crónica de un programa espacial actual – o de un futuro cercano. El Marciano por Andy Weir es la historia de un astronauta accidentalmente abandonado en Marte durante una de las primeras misiones tripuladas al gran planeta rojo. La ciencia en la novela es increíblemente precisa, al punto que el autor tuvo que escribir su propio software para el cálculo de trayectorias, entre otras cosas.

Hace seis dias, el astronauta Mark Watney se convirtio en una de las primeras personas en caminar en Marte. Ahora, él esta seguro de que va a ser la primera persona en morir allí.

– La sinópsis del libro.

Su historia es aquella de superación ante la adversidad y la verdadera muestra de lo que es capaz un ser humano con suficiente entrenamiento y creatividad. Mi intención no es revelar la trama de la novela, sino más bien motivar a todo el que pueda a que la lea. Es una historia de lo que significa ser humano, pero por encima de todo lo que significa pertenecer a la sociedad humana. La narrativa es muy parecida a la de una película, escena tras escena, el autor te mantiene ante la incertidumbre en todo momento.

El libro ha causado furor en muchos círculos, pero en particular lo mas interesante es que la edición original fue auto-publicada por el autor, algo que las editoriales profesionales miran con desdén. Pero la gran acogida que tuvo (en tres meses vendió 35 mil copias en Amazon) hizo que las grandes casas editoriales no pudieran hacerse de la vista gorda. Vivimos en tiempos emocionantes y la democratización de la información es nuestro mayor aporte a las generaciones venideras. Me siento complacido por vivir en el “futuro”.

La editorial Crown se hizo con los derechos de la novela y a principios del año pasado lanzaron la nueva edición editada profesionalmente. Ya se encuentra disponible la versión en español² con prólogo del artista Miquel Barceló. Como era de esperarse, ya está en producción la película que dirige Ridley Scott y protagoniza Matt Damon. Los invito a leerla, seguro que una vez comiencen no podrán parar.

Date Commands

Dr. Drang recently shared two date commands he uses for: i) calculating how many days have passed since a given date, and ii) another that returns the day of the year of the current date.

I was mainly interested in the first one because I often have to do that calculation.¹ Because the script can also compute the days remaining until a future date, you can imagine how handy it can be. For instance, if I’d like to know how many days until the day I start my vacations, I just run the script with a future date and it’ll return a negative result in days. Or if I’d like to know how old I am in days.

This is how old I am in days.

I thought it would be something useful to have on my iPhone so I turned it into a Pythonista script that I run from Drafts. If you want to know exactly what the script does go to Dr. Drang’s post, I just modified it a bit so that it runs from Drafts when you enter a date in the following format DD MM YY where YY is optional, it assumes current year.

My solution is typically to google for a date calculator. Then I have to go through the links, and find the one I need. A bit cumbersome, but since I don’t do this everyday I don’t complain much. It just seems simpler to have it as a Drafts action.↩

A CV for my Thesis

A Ph.D. thesis is one of those things that has a life of its own. Last January, I had the opportunity to write a two-page abstract of my thesis for publication in Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis. It has been published and is now available on the web along with the PhD thesis.

The paper is only a glimpse of all the hard work that went into the making of the thesis, but anyone who reads it may get a decent idea of what it is about, and where to find the results I’ve published in different journals. I don’t think anyone wants to go through the process of writing a thesis twice, but most will agree that it is a life changing experience. Many of the best moments of my life so far, happened while working towards the PhD, especially the birth of my two boys.

Un mundo extraño

Vivir en un mundo que gira a la derecha debe ser incómodo y en ocasiones extraño. Aproximadamente el 10 por ciento de la población del mundo es zurda versus un aplastante 90 por ciento de diestros. Evidentemente, ser zurdo es poco común, pero además todavía no se entiende bien el por qué de la dominancia de un lado del cuerpo o la destreza¹ de una de las dos manos.

Mi hijo mayor resultó ser zurdo (los dos padres somos diestros). A sus casi tres años de edad ya le comienza a costar un poco algunas cosas de la vida cotidiana. Todo gira a la derecha y lo natural para él es girar las cosas hacia la izquierda. Desde el sacapuntas, una cerradura, una tapa o darle cuerda a los juguetes (todavía no puede) le cuesta todo y se nota su frustración. Apenas comienza a familiarizarse con la escritura, pero supongo que eso será otro reto, especialmente porque esta lengua se escribe de izquierda a derecha, mejor adaptada a – oh, sorpresa – los diestros. El día de mañana cuando comience a hacer otras actividades² de la vida cotidiana se irá dando cuenta de lo incómodo que es ser zurdo en este mundo, pero eso mismo le permitirá adaptarse mucho mejor a ese tipo de situaciones que la mayoría de las personas. A lo que me refiero es que esas mismas incomodidades seguro le servirán de entrenamiento para adaptarse mucho mejor al mundo. El mundo no esta pensado para él y él tendrá que aprender a vivir en un mundo así.

Todo esto no serían más que simples observaciones mías, escritas en mi diario, sino fuera por un episodio de radiolab que escuché esta semana. En él exploran una de las hipótesis sobre la existencia de los zurdos – la tal llamada Hipótesis Faurie-Raymond o hipótesis de la pelea. Es una de las explicaciones más radicales que he escuchado, pero que tiene cierto sentido. Los autores explican que históricamente las peleas han sido mano a mano o con armas de corto alcance. Al ser los diestros mayoría, es poco probable que un diestro se haya enfrentado muchas veces a un zurdo. En el combate esto le da una ventaja al zurdo porque el diestro está en una situación incómoda.

El argumento se extiende a día de hoy con situaciones como los deportes en que la dominancia de un extremo del cuerpo diferente al de la mayoría de personas puede llegar a ser una ventaja significativa. Por ejemplo, el tenis³, la esgrima, o incluso el fútbol. Los investigadores encuentran que existe una correlación en esto y por ejemplo, a pesar de ser un 10 por ciento los zurdos en el mundo, en los deportes de nivel internacional superan el 30 por ciento de los jugadores. No es secreto que los zurdos son claramente apreciados en muchos deportes.

Esta es una de esas experiencias que si no las vives difícilmente se te ocurrirán. Con mi esposa hemos estado enumerando actividades cotidianas en donde se asume que la persona es diestra y cogerá/girará/jalará el objeto con la mano derecha. Tras esta vivencia y reflexión esa minoría ya no es invisible para mí y simpatizo con sus dificultades. Sólo cuando se conoce o se vive la historia de primera mano es cuando nuestro mundo y nuestra percepción cambian. Es como nos advierte la escritora nigeriana Chimamanda Adichie sobre el riesgo de conocer una sola historia de una persona o un pueblo, esto nos conlleva a tener un pobre entendimiento de su situación o incluso a desconocerla del todo.

Un cv moderno

Hace ya mucho tiempo que preparo mi curriculum vitæ en LaTeX. Durante gran parte de ese tiempo lo he hecho con el paquete CV que ayuda a producir un cv sobrio, bien estructurado y elegante. La gran ventaja de LaTeX es que no tienes que preocuparte por el formato, sólo tienes que introducir la información y LaTeX hace su magia al compilar. A continuación muestro un ejemplo

Indudablemente esto es mucho mejor que cualquier cv producido en MS Word o procesadores similares. Sin embargo, hace poco más de un año al estar culminando el doctorado, comencé a buscar trabajo y me parecía que era hora de cambiar un poco el estilo del cv. Entre los distintos paquetes disponibles para LaTeX hubo uno que me pareció muy bueno. Era capaz de producir un cv académico, elegante, pero a la vez mucho más estético y divertido. El paquete se llama moderncv, he aquí un ejemplo de mi cv (ahora actualizado)

Personalización del cv

Por supuesto que el paquete permite personalizar muchos aspectos del cv. He aquí algunas opciones o configuraciones que he escogido.

En mi caso me gusta el estilo azul clásico \moderncvtheme[blue]{classic}.
La versión en español tiene que ir precedida del paquete \usepackage[spanish]{babel}.

Para separar las distintas publicaciones de artículos en revistas, proceedings de congresos, etc. Utilizo

  \usepackage{multibib}
  \newcites{jour,proc,jourdiv}{{Art\'iculos en Revistas},{Actas en Congresos Revisadas por Pares},{Art\'iculos t\'ecnicos por Invitaci\'on}}

Esto significa que después de compilar el archivo .tex, debo ejecutar el commando bibtex independientemente para cada bibliografía (jour.bbl, proc.bbl, jourdiv.bbl).
N.B.1 Sólo hay un archivo .bib, el paquete multibib me permite producir varias bibliografías o referencias al final de un documento.
N.B.2 A veces edito manualmente los archivos .bbl si una referencia no sale exactamente como quiero. Esto es util para cuando un artículo que ha sido aceptado, pero todavía no tiene número o año (bibtex no maneja bien referencias sin año).

El repositorio de mi cv está disponible en github con todos los archivos necesarios para compilar y producir el cv. Espero que les resulte útil.

Not Collapsing the Wave Function

Today in “This American Life” I was listening to an episode about hidden truths. It was really interesting to find out about a secret letter that the prime minister of Britain writes to every commander of a nuclear submarine. It supposedly contains instructions on what to do if the nation has been wiped out and if the commander should retaliate or not. It poses a mystery on what the contents are, even more so because every time there’s a new prime minister in office the letters are destroyed unread.

There are many questions that come about in knowing what the contents of the letter are. But to my understanding it is a way of reassuring your people that both possibilities exist. To retaliate or not. It is like delaying the final call on a difficult decision. Something akin to a Schrödinger cat situation.

I’ve thought of this for while and I’ve come to understand that many people actually like to live their lives this way. Not wanting to know certain things, or more precisely clinging to the hope that a certain aspect in one’s life does not turn out to be what we fear so much. Keeping both options open (not collapsing the wave function) is probably a reassuring situation, relieving anxiety and allowing one to continue living unmoved by the cold hard reality.

The Perils of Talking Too Much

All too often I see people who simply talk too much.¹ Wether what they speak is nonsense or even meaningful things, there’s a limit to how much one can tolerate.

By talking too much – and too often – we miss out on many things. We don’t let others speak (which to my understanding is common courtesy), and worse of all we lose our capacity to empathize with others. We can’t read faces well while uttering words out of our mouths continuously. Loosing that feedback is what prompts us to speak without pause and with no care for what the people around us may feel. It’s what turns you into a prick. We’re just too focused on ourselves to care about others.

Having no feedback at all is dangerous, it really is. You tend to get the feeling that you’re always right. Usually, people are too polite to interrupt you and bring you down a notch and say, it takes two to converse! This is no lecture. A conversation is about sharing and paying attention to your conversation partner’s needs.

It is no surprise that by talking too much we may alienate our loved ones and friends from our lives. They’ll avoid us and our utterances at all times. It is this kind of behavior that we have to be careful about.

Acceso privilegiado al futuro

La idea de la enseñanza y la investigación como dos actividades complementarias no es nueva y en realidad es algo que tengo muy asumido desde hace tiempo. Desde que comencé a tener más contacto con la academia empecé a entender el gran valor agregado que le aporta un profesor investigador al proceso educativo que lidera.

Un profesor que no investiga difícilmente encuentra razones para mantenerse al día con su área del conocimiento. Incluso la metodología y las herramientas cambian, así el contenido sea aparentemente inmutable como puede ser un curso de matemáticas. Sin embargo, yo iría un poco más allá e insistiría en que no tiene sentido impartir cursos de, por ejemplo matemáticas, sin tener la certeza para qué utilizarán eso los estudiantes en el futuro.

Hacer investigación es, en ocasiones, como tener un acceso privilegiado al futuro, en el sentido en que se tiene idea de hacia adonde se dirige un campo del conocimiento. Cuando se tiene ese poder, resulta más fácil trazar el rumbo de la educación y organizar mejor las herramientas que se necesitan. Por ello lo de los cursos básicos y aparentemente inmutables, son sólo eso inmutables en apariencia.

New Secularism

Before Darwin it certainly was very difficult to be an atheist or a nonbeliever – that is, an intellectually fulfilled one.¹ At least that’s how Richard Dawkins usually puts it and I quite agree with him. It was not that the scientific method² didn’t exist at the time, it was that the mystery of life was too big a mystery to even consider tackling through the ways of science. Yet that was what Darwin did.

The topic of this post does not have to do with Darwin, at least in a direct sense. The other day I was listening to Point of Inquiry, a podcast from the center of inquiry.³ They had Frans de Waal on and he talked about his latest book The Bonobo and the Atheist. There was a moment during the interview that the host, Chris Mooney, referred to him as being an atheist to which he replied saying

I am not necessarily an [atheist], because atheism has now come to stand for being very strongly opposed to religion which is really not what I am, I prefer to call my self either a nonbeliever or an apathetic meaning that, the agnostic doesn’t know if god exists, the atheist denies the existence of god, and I basically don’t care. I don’t think it is an important or interesting problem to discuss god. And as a scientist, I don’t know what to do with the god question. It will never be resolved, certainly not by science.

I can truly relate to his words. As much as I identify with people like Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris, being an atheist does not have to mean being opposed to religion. I can do that without being one. As a matter of fact religion and the institutions that promote it have done so much wrong to mankind that the logic behind them falls apart rather quickly.

What I can’t seem to get around my head is that despite that, religion is still a creation of humans and if I want to take the scientist’s approach I should accept it for what it is. That doesn’t mean, like de Wall suggests, that it cannot be replaced with something else. In his book, he argues that morality is something that is older than our species. Research suggests that many primates, and other animals, have a sense of morality. Meaning that they have impulses and self control mechanisms to resolve conflicts, to determine rules, etc.

In fact Massimo Pigliucci’s book Answers for Aristotle attempts to solve that problem by saying that we should lead a life that is both philosophically and scientifically pertinent. Going back to the whole being opposed to religion issue, I say, denying god gets us nowhere. The existentialist questions still remain and it says nothing about what’s the best way to lead a life. Our society is too big and complex to pretend that we shouldn’t pursue such questions. However, we should use the best tools we’ve got for the job, and in the twenty-first century these are not religion or theology.

To conclude I would like to say that we shouldn’t really attack religion for what it is or for being wrong, we should instead try to show the way with the best tools we have. Resolving conflict without invoking god. Discussing real life issues with the best evidence we can find. Addressing our questions knowing wholeheartedly our limits.

A Book for my Son

In the latest Generational podcast episode Aaron Hillegass told Gabe that he wrote his Objective-C book with his ten-year-old in mind.

I found this to be quite interesting and truly inspiring. By writing the book “for his son,” he made sure anyone could actually read and understand it, but also he was deeply motivated to get it right. I wouldn’t want my son to read a crappy book.

If I ever had to write a guide about how to be (stay) motivated on a project this would definitely be there.

A Brave New World: The joy of discovery

This post is in fact a Day One entry. I treat my Day One journal as a sort of personal blog. A blog with a readership of one – at least in the present. What I mean to say is that, for the most part, I write about my life and for my kids, which are too young to read. I hope they read this in some distant future. I think that the things I might forget are probably the things they’ll want to know about. That is why I write.

Occasionally I like to share and entry with my wife, which now Day One makes it so easy by offering the export to PDF option (click here to see what the pdf looks like). Day One is an awesome app which inevitably has made me write more, reflect upon my thoughts and experiences both personal and with the people close to me. It has enabled something which I had lost, having conversations with myself, past and present, which I believe is part of being and feeling alive.

I’ve been trying to teach Alejandro how to go down the stairs for several months now. For the most part it’s been an unfruitful endeavor, and not because he doesn’t want to go down the stairs; quite the contrary. He loves going down (or trying to go down) but walking right up on his two feet, like he sees everyone else doing it.

Just about every time I tried to show him how to slide his little butt, step by step, to go down safely, he would hurry down the stairs unafraid of falling. After a couple of months of no progress whatsoever I gave up, he can crawl up the stairs, but to go down I have to grab him while he pretends to go down like a grown-up.

Today that was different. I took him out to a nearby park so he could play outside in the sun. After riding his tricycle for about ten minutes he started to wander about in the park. Most of the times he wanders erratically, like going with the flow; chasing whatever is in his sight: a pigeon, a rock, a ball or another kid.

After a while he began to play going up and – with my help – down some stairs in the park. For him it was quite fun, for me a bit stressing because he can’t quite sense the danger in playing around stairs.

After several tries he – out of pure accident – stumbled upon a solution to go down the stairs in a fairly safe way. Sliding on his buttocks. He doesn’t speak yet, however I could sense in his eyes the satisfaction for having made a significant discovery, another way of doing things not known to him before.

I’m not making an argument for implying that he has a deep thought process like an adult, I know he doesn’t. Yet that feeling of true discovery was as vivid in his eyes as I see it in adults. I would say it is even more powerful, because he doesn’t feel shame in expressing his feelings. He has no reason whatsoever to hide his ignorance. His discovery is genuine, as are his feelings.

El problema de lo gratis

De pequeño me enseñaron a no recibir cosas que me ofrezca una persona extraña. De paso también me enseñaron que de lo bueno no dan mucho, y que no hay nada que sea realmente gratis – siempre hay alguna pega. Entonces por qué somos tan dados a darlo todo¹ y tan fácilmente por ahí en el internet.

Facebook, Google, Twitter, y demás empresas parecidas de la era de la web 2.0, ofrecen innumerables servicios de manera gratuita. ¿O no?

La verdad, en esto de lo gratis nos hemos acostumbrado todos, y nos parecería muy extraño pagar por un servicio de mensajería instantánea, chat, red social, etc. Pero si en la época de mis padres cualquier servicio que te ofreciera una empresa tenía un coste, ¿qué pasa, ahora no? Ahora también, lo que pasa es que el modelo de negocio es distinto. Para todas estas empresas nosotros no somos el cliente, somos el producto.

Hasta hace no mucho, una empresa que cualquiera debía hacer estudios de mercado, encuestas, perfiles de sus potenciales clientes, y quien sabe qué más. Es probable que a día de hoy aún lo hagan, pero no tienen muchos motivos para seguir haciéndolo. Toda esta información la hemos “regalado” a cambio de un aparente servicio gratuito. No hay empresa que pueda superar el arduo trabajo que ponen los millones de usuarios de Facebook rellenando perfiles y haciendo click en me gusta este enlace, me gusta este libro, me gusta esta foto (que además tiene información GPS de donde la tomamos), etc. Para que luego Facebook le venda está información a sus verdaderos clientes los anunciantes de publicidad y quien sabe que más tipo de organizaciones que también estén interesadas.

Yo te digo hoy, tu información personal es valiosa, piensa primero a quien y por qué se la das. La gente no suele pensar en ello, pero es cierto. Mi privacidad no es algo que me tome a la ligera. Así cómo el tiempo es oro, la información también.

Si le invertiré mucho tiempo a algo (que es como si invirtiera dinero) quiero que sea en un producto del que me pueda sentir orgulloso. Además, siempre que pueda, quiero ser dueño y responsable de mi información. No quiero pasar horas y horas rellenando formularios, subiendo fotos, o lo que sea, para que luego de la noche a la mañana la empresa (dueña de estos datos) decida borrarlos o que se vaya a la banca rota y desaparezcan mis datos con ella.² Una forma rápida de saber si se puede invertir tiempo y atención en uno de estos servicios gratuitos es si ofrece la posibilidad de exportar toda esa información que les hemos dado de una manera relativamente fácil.

Por paranoico que parezca no es sólo una cuestión de seguridad y confianza, es una cuestión de principios. Así como no dejo entrar a cualquiera a mi casa y que se entere de mi vida, tampoco quiero dejarle mi vida (digital) a gente que no conozco bien o que no sé bien que hará con ella. Y tu, ¿a quien le estas dejando tu vida digital?

This type of blog post is inspired by Brett Terpstra’s “Web Excursions” system. As he explains, he prefers a single post with multiple links rather than a ton of individual “link list” posts. I do too.

Si hay un podcast que no me puedo perder es el de RadioLab. Es un programa de la radio pública de Nueva York que se centra en temas científicos y filosóficos. Pero lo mejor de RadioLab es la forma en como presentan las historias, en particular la forma en como editan el programa. Ambientan con efectos de sonido y música que te transportan directamente al lugar donde ocurrió el evento. Es increíblemente conmovedor.

Uno de los temas recurrentes en sus programas es el lenguaje como parte esencial de lo que somos y en cuanto determina nuestra percepción del mundo. A veces creemos que el lenguaje no es más que una herramienta que nos permite describir lo que vemos y pensamos, pero en realidad es mucho mas.

En ocasiones el hecho de no tener una palabra (o un concepto) para un objeto nos impide percibirlo. Parece mentira, pero no lo es. Por ejemplo, recientes estudios han mostrado que no todas las culturas describen los colores, que físicamente vemos, de la misma manera. Algunas culturas tienen el mismo nombre para el azul y el verde, lo cual afecta la manera en que su cerebro percibe el mundo. Al presentarle los dos colores en una pantalla, los individuos dicen que no ven diferencia alguna – que es el mismo color. Vale la pena recalcar que los sujetos del estudio no tienen ningún problema de visión, la cuestión está ligada a como el lenguaje afecta la habilidad del cerebro para percibir la distinción. En efecto, nosotros no vemos con los ojos, sino con el cerebro.¹

Descifrando el mundo con las manos

Otro ejemplo claro del lenguaje ligado al poder cognitivo o de la percepción es el de los niños sordos de Nicaragua y su lengua de señas. La peculiaridad de dicha lengua es que se desarrolló de manera aislada de otras lenguas de señas en los años ochenta cuando el gobierno Sandinista creó la primera escuela pública para niños sordos en la historia del país. El lenguaje evolucionó naturalmente a partir de la comunicación entre los propios estudiantes – sin la intervención de los adultos.

De hecho, los profesores sí que intentaron la utilización de dactilología con signos elementales para representar los fonemas, pero resultó en un completo fracaso, ya que la mayoría de los alumnos no tenían la menor noción de lo que era una palabra, al no haber estado nunca expuestos a la lengua oral ni a la escrita. Por consiguiente, los niños y los docentes estaban desconectados lingüísticamente.

Inicialmente, los alumnos solo podían usar gestos rudimentarios, utilizados dentro de sus propias familias, pero una vez que se los reunió, comenzaron a crear entre ellos de forma independiente un lenguaje propio. Mientras que a los profesores les resultaba difícil entender a sus alumnos, éstos se comunicaban entre sí sin ningún problema. En unas pocas décadas había nacido un lenguaje maduro con su propias reglas y gramática. En las palabras de Steven Pinker

(…) es un caso absolutamente único en la historia. Hemos podido ver cómo los niños (y no adultos) generan el lenguaje, y hemos podido registrar lo sucedido con un gran detalle científico. Y es la primera, y la única, vez que hemos realmente visto la creación de un lenguaje a partir de la nada.

Es realmente un caso extraordinario y por ello el gran interés de los lingüistas y psicólogos por estudiar lo acontecido.

Con el paso de los años más niños se incorporaron a la escuela y aprendieron rápidamente el lenguaje de señas. Lo que conllevó a que en unas pocas generaciones la lengua se volviera cada vez más sofisticada y compleja.

A los investigadores (los que lograron descifrar el lenguaje) les llamó la atención la (aparente) diferencia cognitiva entre las primeras generaciones y las subsiguientes. En uno de los estudios se les enseñaban unos dibujos animados tanto a los niños como a los adultos sordos de Nicaragua. Luego se les pedía que contaran lo que habían visto. Los adultos (los creadores del lenguaje) intentaban replicar lo acontecido, casi con los mismos movimientos que los personajes de la animación. Por otra parte, los niños (las nuevas generaciones) podían relatar lo que habían visto prácticamente sólo con movimientos de las manos. El nivel de sofisticación era tal que no necesitaban del énfasis corporal para transmitir el mensaje. Además los niños no sólo se limitaban a comunicar lo que habían visto, sino también su interpretación de los eventos. Lo que debía estar pensando un personaje. Lo que era valioso o importante para él – cosas que claramente implicaban un nivel cognitivo mucho mayor. Mientras que los adultos, al no tener palabras para expresar conceptos más complejos relativos al pensamiento no parecían percatarse de las cosas subyacentes en la escena.²

Una de las posibles explicaciones para lo que encontraron los investigadores tiene que ver con el lenguaje. Mientras que los adultos – la generación fundadora – sólo tenían una palabra para referirse a “pensar” (señalando con un dedo en la frente), los niños tenían muchísimas más. Los niños tienen palabras para decir cosas como “yo sé algo que tu no sabes”, o “yo sé algo que a ti te gustaría saber”, etc. No entraré en más detalles,³ pero parece evidente que entre más sofisticado sea el lenguaje también lo serán nuestras capacidades cognitivas para descifrar el mundo que nos rodea.

Simplemente se ciñen a señalarlos. Para ellos cada árbol es distinto el uno del otro, el concepto genérico de “árbol” no existe. ↩

Writing my thoughts down

As is often the case, ideas come about in the most unexpected moments. Lately, I’ve found myself taking notes while walking to work, while waiting for a coffee in front of a bending machine, or like now while getting dressed for work.

It’s become a habit of mine to write what I think, when I think it. My iPod touch has enabled that. I could well have pen and paper with me at all times, but I’m not used to that and nothing beats the digital format.

I journal much more now than ever before, and that’s thanks to apps like Day One or Drafts. Writing my thoughts down has never been easier. And, to tell you the truth, it’s liberating. It’s like Merlin Mann says, “your brain has permission to think at all times.” And, as Melissa Donovan says in her book 101 Creative Writing Exercises, “Journaling…promotes observation, self-awareness, and reflection, all skills that great writers must possess”, (by way of Christi Craig). My journaling has come a long way since I started using Day One last year. Some blog posts start there, or even certain personal emails too. Journaling helps me to reflect upon my thoughts and to make important decisions.

I’ve always been fond of writing, yet I’ve never had such an intimate relationship with my thoughts and my inner self. I believe that writing brings about the best in me. Through writing I can look at my human face and recognize my afflictions and ghosts.

Even as I sit here on my bed, tying my shoelaces, I feel an urge to get my thoughts out. I had never experienced this strong desire before. I, however, am totally aware that the more I write, the more I feel this urge. It’s quite fascinating and at times I just can’t help myself.

Happy new year to all my readers. Hope you had a nice time during the holidays and that you soon start your 2013 projects motivated and committed to getting things done – at least that’s my main purpose for this year.

Careless email writing

I read the other day an email that desperately needed some editing. Writing without editing is pretty much the same as speaking with little attention to what we are saying. The great advantage of the written form over the spoken one is that you can go back an edit. Not editing what you write is both a poor use of the written form and a sign that you don’t care much for the person that will read your message.

It’s not that a typo is not allowed, no one is perfect. But to write something without punctuation is just insane. All too often I hear people say that, because they are not writers or journalists they are somehow excused of writing poorly. I think it is just plain laziness. It’s a laziness that reads as our lack of interest for a craft so important to us by which we express what we feel and think.

How is it, that common sense doesn’t rouse in these situations? Why is it so difficult to realize that a 500+ word email written in a single paragraph without punctuation is just illegible. It costs so much to get the ideas out of that mess. The laziness to which I refer does service to no one, and buries even the meaning of your well-intended message.

So do yourself a favor and go back and edit the message a bit before hitting the send button.

No, no tienes derecho a opinar

Hace algunos días leí un artículo interesante en el que el autor exploraba la idea de permitirle a los estudiantes la oportunidad de opinar siempre y cuando pudieran argumentar su opinión.

En este mundo de la información resulta fácil confundir – de acuerdo a Platón – una opinión o creencia con conocimiento certero. Una de las cosas que más me llamó la atención del artículo fue lo siguiente

The problem with “I’m entitled to my opinion” is that, all too often, it’s used to shelter beliefs that should have been abandoned. It becomes shorthand for “I can say or think whatever I like” – and by extension, continuing to argue is somehow disrespectful. And this attitude feeds, I suggest, into the false equivalence between experts and non-experts that is an increasingly pernicious feature of our public discourse.

Como dice P. Stokes, el problema está en creer que opinar significa “yo puedo decir lo que me de la gana” – así sea un disparate – y los demás deben aceptarlo porque es mi opinión.

Si te están preguntando por tu sabor de helado favorito no tiene que existir discusión alguna, pero si te preguntan sobre el calentamiento global resulta que hay gente sin la más mínima formación científica – que por diversas circunstancias, muchas veces políticas – se creen en capacidad de opinar. Pero lo peor es que quieren que su opinión se tenga en cuenta. Y la verdad es que no hay motivos razonables o lógicos para prestarle atención. Sin embargo, a veces nos parece mal el no permitirle a un personaje de estos su derecho a opinar. Yo diría que, ¡No! No tienes derecho a opinar.

'Cooking' Ideas

I love to cook – or one of the reasons I enjoy it so much is – because it’s a manual activity that, quite often, lets my mind wonder about. While cooking I can think about my problems,¹ about the future, about a world different from this one. I can hear my thoughts in a undisturbed way. It is like a moment of pristine inspiration. Me and myself. Nobody else.

I seldom write those thoughts down, because – well, it’s quite obvious – I’m cooking at the moment and if I did that, dinner would take forever to be ready.

So, as beautiful and inspiring the whole while-cooking thought process may be, it is ephemeral. As soon as dinner is ready I get back to the current issue and most of what was in my mind, just moments ago, vanishes – or so it seems. I think that on a subconscious level those thoughts do stick around.

What I certainly don’t like about cooking is the planning itself. If I want to cook chicken in the evening, and it’s in the fridge I have to remind myself to take it out in the morning – which quite often means I have to plan it the day before. And let’s be honest, having to think about getting chicken out of the fridge is not exactly the most intellectual thing one could be doing – yet, it’s got to happen and someone’s got to do it.

Except for that, cooking (to me) is quite a satisfactory experience which enables me to enjoy myself and have an encounter with my thoughts and imagination. It’s (almost) like day dreaming, but it’s not. It’s much more.

My reflection in a mirror of prose

I like to write, for writing reminds me of who I am, who I want to be, and where I come from. It is no mistery that I enjoy it, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

I often get compliments on my writing, but still, I think there’s a long way to go before I feel more comfortable with it – I still struggle over single words or sentences.

Lately, I’ve been rediscovering myself in many different ways. I find myself more aware of everything – and that is probably not the most interesting thing – if not by chance, by fate, but I do feel different. I certainly am not the same person I was a while ago. I write more, which means I exit my body more often.

I write about my writing, for it serves as confession and a means to see my reflection in a mirror of prose. A reflection of what I think, and of who I am. It is no coincidence that by writing I often find answers to my problems or get a glance of the next step I should take.

Writing is almost certainly not for everyone, at least in the sense of writing for the fun of it. I hardly know people – in person that is¹ – that write out of pure pleasure, let alone people that truly make a living out of writing.

Writing is an art, but is also a skill. A skill that – despite natural talent – requires time and effort in developing. Like Colin Nissan says in the “Ultimate guide to writing better than you normally do”

Writing is a muscle. Smaller than a hamstring and slightly bigger than a bicep, and it needs to be exercised to get stronger. Think of your words as reps, your paragraphs as sets, your pages as daily workouts. Think of your laptop as a machine like the one at the gym where you open and close your inner thighs in front of everyone, exposing both your insecurities and your genitals. Because that is what writing is all about.

Yes, it’s about exposing yourself and becoming stronger in the process.

In the virtual world, I do know a number of people that write for the fun of it and are lucky enough to make a living from it. ↩

Paper Tips

Pronto comenzaré a escribir una serie de artículos cortos con sugerencias para mejorar la escritura de un artículo científico en inglés. Como primera medida hago esto con la finalidad de tener mejor organizado el material de referencia del que dispongo, al hacerlo público me condiciono a mi mismo a hacerlo mejor. Lo comparto porque también sé que le puede ser útil a otros.

Antes que todo quiero decir que no soy un experto en el tema. Estos—pequeños—artículos no son más que anotaciones sobre dudas o inconvenientes que he superado durante mi trayectoria académica en lo que respecta a la escritura de artículos científicos en inglés.

Aunque el objetivo principal es abarcar la escritura de artículos, también puede ser útil para las tesis, reportes científicos o informes de laboratorio.

¿Felicitar o no felicitar?

Felicitar a alguien por su cumpleaños es un acto de generosidad. El que felicita te desea que seas feliz por un acontecimiento, en este caso conmemorar el día de tu nacimiento.

En diversas ocasiones le he escuchado a distintas personas ¿por qué celebrar el cumpleaños? ¿Acaso hay algo que celebrar? El haber nacido no es un logro en sí. Durante mucho tiempo el argumento había estado resonando en mi mente, aunque nunca le dediqué mayor tiempo – hasta ahora, por lo visto.

Ahora que soy padre, el cumpleaños de mi hijo es una fecha importante para mí, porque efectivamente ha sido un punto decisivo en mi vida. Claramente hay un antes y después. No así en la vida de mi hijo, pues para él nunca ha habido un “antes”, y por el momento tampoco tiene conciencia de ello. Por lo tanto, como primera aproximación el celebrar el cumpleaños de mi hijo sí tiene un gran significado para mí, ¿y para él?

¿A quien se debe felicitar, a los padres o al que cumple años? Esta pregunta es – en mi humilde opinión – más acertada que simplemente decir ¿por qué celebrar? Pero todavía me deja algo insatisfecho. ¿Tu qué crees?

Four Paragraphs Long

I don’t really know what this post is about or even why I decided it should be blog post in the first place. All I can think is that I really liked it. I thought it would be interesting to share it with others. Not that it would be useful or anything, simply a pleasant read.

It’s not meant to mean anything in particular – at least in any philosophical way. It’s just something I conjured up the other day before going to bed. After I read it a couple of times, I knew it was a true gem. Only four paragraphs long, yet so deep with frustration and love. The love of a father towards his son, and of those little – apparently insignificant – moments that stick with you for the rest of your life. Here it is.

A very short midnight story

It’s almost midnight and I can’t really prevent my eyes from closing. I’m tired as hell, yet I can’t seem to convince myself into the idea that I should get some sleep.

I don’t have a big day tomorrow or anything, it’s just that my kid wakes up so goddamn early. Well, that’s what he’s supposed to do, and I can’t find an argument against that – at least a plausible one.

Sometimes he just stays awake, lying there in my regular-sized bed, staring at me directly into my eyes, even though I have them closed, like waiting for the slightest hint of evidence that I too, am awake.

At the first sight of a blink, he launches himself toward me. “Papa, papa,” he shouts with excitement. I open my eyes wide, he sticks his finger in one of them – it hurts.

Sobre el formato electrónico y los dispositivos móviles

El otro día me gané un libro que se sorteó en un blog al que sigo. Me hizo mucha ilusión ya que tenía muchas ganas de leerlo. ~~De no habérmelo ganado, probablemente lo hubiese comprado,~~ (incluso teniéndolo en físico he decidido comprarlo también en formato digital) pues el autor es una de esas personas peculiares del internet¹ con una historia fascinante por contar y me siento orgulloso al apoyar a alguien así. El libro se llama “A Brilliant Novel in the Works” por Yuvi Zalkow.

El libro me llegó hace unas semanas por correo y así tal cual sigue estando en una repisa de la sala de mi casa. Por mas ganas que tengo de leerlo, no he encontrado el momento ni el espacio para comenzar. Es cierto que últimamente casi no tengo tiempo, pero también es cierto que el libro en su forma – como libro físico que es – no me invita a aprovechar los ratos libres que tengo disponible. Sea porque se me olvide meterlo en el bolso, o sacarlo para tenerlo en la mesa de noche, siempre hay algún motivo o excusa para tenerlo demasiado lejos de donde estoy y no poder ir por él.

Últimamente leo (casi) todo en formato electrónico, sea en el computador o en mi iPod touch. Lo encuentro muy conveniente. El iPod lo tengo siempre conmigo en el bolsillo del pantalón y no me estorba en lo más mínimo. Con la gestión de datos en la nube² tengo siempre mi información sincronizada y no tengo que estar pensando en qué cosas incluir o no. Pero lo verdaderamente útil para mí, es el tenerlo siempre a la mano y poder leer antes de dormir, mientras pongo a dormir a mi hijo, haciendo cola en un banco, en el tren, etc. O incluso, como estoy haciendo ahora, escribiendo esta entrada desde la comodidad de mi cama y con las luces de la habitación apagadas³.

Hay algo a lo que yo le llamo el “tiempo muerto”. Es aquel tiempo en que independientemente de nuestras decisiones tenemos que dejar pasar. Últimamente siento que aprovecho mejor el tiempo muerto y que también lo paso mejor. Leo más, escribo más, vivo más.

Como ya corregí al principio de esta entrada⁴, evidentemente me compré también la edición digital del libro de Yuvi Zalkow y lo llevo ya casi por la mitad. No escribo con la intención de recomendarlo, pero para el que le interese hay risas aseguradas. Y ya que estoy con la pseudo-recomendación hace unas semanas me leí un muy buen libro: “The Writer” por Cristian Mihai, un joven escritor rumano. Es un gran blogger y se ha publicado su libro él mismo. Una persona sin lugar a dudas para seguir en el internet.

No seguiré más, ni entraré en más detalles de lo versátiles que son estos dispositivos móviles, pero si haré hincapié en que utilizándolos de una manera adecuada se les puede sacar un provecho impresionante. No soy quien para decir qué hacer o no hacer con ellos, pero para mí son mucho más que simples dispositivos para el consumo de contenidos.

Un pequeño apartado sobre el papel

Ocasionalmente, si tengo que revisar o editar algún trabajo la última revisión la hago en papel, pero sólo como estrategia para cambiar de formato y poder captar pequeños detalles y errores que se le pueden escapar a uno. No sé qué tiene el cambio de formato, pero sí creo que influye en como percibimos un texto.⁵

Always Late to The Party

It always seems I’m late to the party. For several years I pondered on the idea of joining Twitter, but it never really made much sense to me – at least at the time – to join a social network where there were hardly any friends of mine¹. Big mistake, that actually is one of the cool things about twitter. Unlike Facebook, it does provides an open space suitable for engaging in discussions, albeit short, of all sorts with interesting people who don’t really have to be your “friend.”

It turns out that shortly after joining twitter most people² were already considering abandoning it in favor of App.net. For the time being App.net seems like a niche thing, and most people seem to continue on twitter. Whether that stays that way for the next year or so depends on twitter and their recent policy changes that could well endanger the platform as we know it today.

It’s All About The Editor

For quite a while it seemed that everywhere I looked, geeks where rejoicing and feeling proud of their text editor of choice: Textmate. I did look into it a couple of times, but I always thought it ways a bit too expensive for me.

For the most part it seemed I had always managed to get by with the tools at my disposal, I really didn’t feel like I needed something else. I would use the builtin Matlab editor for writing Matlab code. As regards LaTeX – for writing papers – I would use the open source and free (as in beer) Texmaker. I really wasn’t aware of the exciting and cool features of advanced text editors like Textmate or Vim.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a computer enthusiast, but a lone one. I never did have close friends that were into the sort of things I liked. I was never really ostracized, but I was the “nerd” nevertheless.

This brief digression is not without a purpose, which is to bring forth the fact that despite being a geek, I’ve never been part of a geek community of any sort. And this influenced my way of life and how I – before social networks – ended up finding out about the latest and coolest thing. More often than not, late and when it wasn’t really a new thing. The text editor dilemma is proof to my lack of geeky-social interaction.

Before I bought Textmate, I did do a little background check to see what was happening to its development. Apparently it was being not-so-actively developed, but version 2.0 was on the way. I had managed to somehow convince myself that it was totally worth it and that I would write my thesis with it.

Shortly after I bought it, it went open source, and to the impression of some: abandoned. It seems that for quite some time, everyone had been moving to Sublime text or BBEdit. Late to the party once again. I just can’t stop thinking that if somehow I had looked into it a bit more, if I had participated more on forums and different communities all of this would have ended differently. I can however say, that I am still using Textmate 1, and I’m enjoying my self quite a bit.

A Static or Dynamic Blog

Technically speaking I’ve been bloggin since 2010. However, I must be honest and admit that for about the first year of my (former) blog I hardly posted a thing or two. It was a wordpress.com blog and for nearly the last year or so, I began posting more regularly and I was really enjoying myself. I rapidly got accustomed to wordpress; so much, that I felt trapped in the platform, and I needed more customization to set things my way. Well, for the looks of it, I had to leave wordpress.com and move my blog somewhere else in order to do just that.

I kept blogging there, while I looked around to explore my options. It was interesting that this time I was also late, but not so much in the sense that I was able to catch a lot of people during their migration from a dynamic blog to a static one. I’m not going to go through the details of why I chose a static blog, but it does have its advantages with respect to a dynamic one, like wordpress.

Getting Stuff Done

As a final section for this already long post, I’d like to mention how I’ve also been late to the whole GTD movement (if there is such a thing). It’s amusing how shortly after I started to actually read David Allen’s book on “Getting Things Done”, some people were already arguing

“whether GTD [was] valid after more than 10 years without any real “update”.”

I can’t really say for my self, if it is still valid. I can, however, say that it still seems to make sense in the philosophy behind it, probably not so much in the methodology. But hey, what can I say, I haven’t even finished the goddamn book.

I’ve been late, as always, to many fascinating events of recent years – at least the geeky ones it seems. But I’ve come to accept that as a reality of mine. These days I can say that I try to keep myself more in the loop by following several interesting people on the web, whether it be via their blogs, twitter, or podcasts. This seems a bit of a remedy to my bad timing, but hey everyone’s entitled to do things their way. I’m still struggling to actually find what is “my way”, but I’m in no hurry. There probably isn’t any real answer, I reckon the search is more valuable than the goal itself.

I still have few close friends on twitter; most of them are rarely active. As regards Facebook, I cannot say the same. ↩

Convert Image to PDF with Automator and Imagemagick

I often use Imagemagick for image manipulation¹. However, for simple conversion of an image to another format or similar things I have to go to the terminal and type something like the following

convert somefile.png somefile.pdf

Which is quite simple, and much better than opening preview -> export²->select pdf-> and hit save. But typing that for more than one image is also tedious. So, I decided I’d better create a service that would essentially do the following.

It would take the selected finder items, mainly images in png, jpeg, or whatever, and convert all of them to pdf. Simple. The automator service is shown in the following image. It does exactly what I’ve described.

The shell script is quite simple. Because the convert command from Imagemagick is not a command in bash, I have to call it with the whole path. The rest of that one-liner is a sed call to substitute whatever extension the input file has (with the regex \..*) to .pdf, and that’s it. Here’s the script.

As a matter of fact, now that I’ve finally upgraded to Mountain Lion, Imagemagick stopped working. Had to reinstall with macports.↩

My blog post writing workflow with Dropbox and Hazel

It may seem that, for the most part, I’ve been blogging about blogging. No matter how pointless it seems, I do think that this could prove useful to someone, in the same way I have benefited from others while setting up this site¹.

One of the things I like about having an Octopress driven txt-only blog is that I have the liberty to set things my way. The topic I am addressing here is that of writing blog posts on different devices² with the help of Dropbox³ and Hazel. I’m still working out the whole remote blogging thing, this is but the first stage of a soon-to-be remote blogging workflow with Octopress.

My blog post writing workflow

Ideally any blog post starts with an idea that I write down in a text file named runx-blog_ideas-qqq.txt⁴. This is done either on any of the two Macs using nvAlt or on my iOS device using any text editor⁵. I always write in Markdown (technically I mostly write in Multimarkdown, but that’s another thing).

After I decide that this idea is ready to become a draft, I create a text file that follows the same name convention for Octopress (2012-10-14-Post-title.text) on a folder named _drafts that resides in the source. You might have noticed that the extension is not .markdown and that is because I was having issues making Hazel read the contents of markdown files. So I opted for .text which is technically the same as .txt, but I would differentiate them as drafts and most importantly Hazel will be able to do its magic.

The underscore (_) on the name of the drafts folder is so that it won’t be deployed, just as the posts folder

With the help of Typinator on my mac or Textexpander on my iPod I create the yaml header like this

Notice that published: false, which means it is a draft. When I’m finished with the post I’ll change it to true.

The Syncing

The Syncing is done via Dropbox, because any iOS text editor comes with Dropbox support. iCloud has still a long way to go. Because my octopress folder does not reside in the Dropbox folder I made symlinks on my Mac to the _posts, _drafts, and images folders so they get synced

Automating with Hazel

Ideally I would like to change the published: false to true and have it posted to my site, but it still requires some workarounds and this is why for the time being my hazel magic script only moves the file to the _posts folder when the published option changes to true. I then generate the site and deploy it manually, but this will soon be automated as well.

There are actually two Hazel rules for this. It first monitors the _drafts folder for files whose content contains the phrase published: true. When this happens the file gets moved to the folder _posts.

Then the second rule is for the _posts folder. If the extension is text (which means it was a draft that recently got moved) it will run a shell script.

Modify latest post.

The shell script is the following. What it does is to replace the date with the current date – you see, several days could’ve passed since I created the draft – in both the yaml header and the file name. And the other thing it does is to change the extension to .markdown.

It may look like there’s not much automation, but if you think that this runs on my Mac while I’m writing it in my iPod Touch, then it gets really interesting, and the possibilities are almost infinite. Besides, updating the post date, moving files and changing extensions are quite tedious tasks by themselves. To make it automatically generate and deploy the site I’d have to add several more lines to the script, but I’m ok with how it is for now.

Sobre los Americanos

En el último episodio de Grammar Girl se habló sobre la problemática que rodea al hecho de llamar a los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos como “americanos”.

Los que somos nacidos en el continente americano, pero que no somos de Estados Unidos, nos suele molestar que se utilice el gentilicio “americano” para referirse a los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos, cuando legítimamente todos somos americanos.

Resulta que este problema no es reciente. En el diccionario Merriam-Webster aparece que la primera objeción ocurrió en 1791 [1], y en 1963 en su libro, “The American Language”, H. L. Mencken escribió

“As everyone knows, the right of Americans to be so called is frequently challenged, especially in Latin America, but so far, no plausible substitute has been devised, though many have been proposed, e.g., Unisians, United-statesians, Columbards [2].”

En el episodio reconocen que aunque formalmente no es correcto decir americanos para referirse a los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos, desafortunadamente (como se ha visto), no existe una alternativa apropiada – por lo menos en inglés. Unisians o United-statesians suenan muy extraño en inglés.

Por lo tanto, la regla (no escrita) es que en los países angloparlantes e incluso en Europa, se utiliza “americano” para referirse a alguien de Estados Unidos porque así es como se usa cotidianamente y los lectores lo entienden así. De hecho Las guías británicas y, sorprendentemente, las canadienses apoyan el término “americano” para referirse al ciudadano de los E.E.U.U.¹

En Latinoamérica solemos utilizar el gentilicio estadounidense y aunque está reconocido por la real academia, no parece ser muy utilizado acá en España fuera de los medios impresos. De hecho sobre el uso internacional del gentilicio “americano”, en la wikipedia sugiere que los que principalmente hacemos la distinción somos los hablantes de la lengua castellana y portuguesa. En el resto del mundo, incluyendo al francés, italiano, chino, hebreo, árabe e incluso el ruso utilizan el término americano o su traducción. Curiosamente los alemanes distinguen entre Amerikaner y US-Amerikaner.

Sobre la suscripción

Suscribirte a este blog es muy fácil, puedes hacerlo vía RSS o por email. Estas opciones están dispuestas en la parte inferior de la barra lateral.

La suscripción por RSS implica que debes tener un lector de RSS, por ejemplo Google reader. RSS significa Really Simple Syndication y se utiliza para difundir información actualizada frecuentemente a usuarios que se han suscrito a la fuente de contenidos. De esta manera no tendrás que visitar directamente la página, sino que el contenido te llegará a través del lector de RSS. Por otra parte, si no deseas hacerlo vía RSS, también puedes suscribirte por email. Cuando publique una nueva entrada te llegará un correo electrónico con el articulo incluido en él.

Si te interesa seguir varios blogs, lo mejor es que te suscribas a ellos vía RSS. De esta manera sólo tendrás que visitar la página de Google reader o tu lector de RSS preferido.

Hay algo que quiero aclarar respecto de este blog. En realidad son dos blogs y por lo tanto también hay dos RSS feeds, uno en inglés y otro en español. Si ya te has suscrito a esta página, es probable que sólo estés suscrito a la versión en español o a la versión en inglés.

A partir de ahora también estará disponible la opción de suscribirse al blog combinado (por así decirlo), el contenido en inglés más el contenido en español. El procedimiento es el mismo que el anterior y el enlace también está ubicado en la parte inferior de la barra lateral.

Spanish keyboard and Aperture

My new keyboard.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve grown accustomed to switching back and forth between an english keyboard at home and a spanish keyboard at work. Like anything, at first it takes a while to get fully accustomed, but all in all it isn’t too bad. This week my English keyboard at home died, so I bought a new one this time in Spanish, because that was what they had at the store.

One of the things I don’t like of the spanish keyboard ¹ is that most (if not all) applications design the shortcuts assuming an English keyboard. Therefore, what could be single key shortcut in the English keyboard becomes a double key shortcut in the Spanish keyboard. And that’s not all.

It just so happens that in some applications, in my case Apple Aperture there are some really nice single key shortcuts like left square bracket ([) for rotating an image counterclockwise, but in the spanish keyboard the bracket, while being in the same place has to be typed with the option (⌥) key.

For some unknown reason Aperture doesn’t recognize this double key shortcut as the single key shortcut I’m trying to reproduce. As a matter of fact it assumes I’m pressing (⌥ `), where the back-tick is the other character sharing the same key as the left square bracket.²

I have googled a bit about this topic and in an apple discussion this was somewhat discussed, but to no great length. And the only solution for the time being is to go to 'Aperture' > 'Commands' > 'Customize...'. But I’m still not comfortable changing the default commands in Aperture. I really liked the single key shortcuts for rotating an image and stuff like that. Let’s see how this ends up.

a service for writing day one footnotes inline

I recently wrote about inserting footnotes in Day One and how it could be achieved with the new markdown support. I realize that ideally Day One should support multimarkdown footnotes, but this has not arrived yet. It could well be planned for a future release, but I’ll stick to my solution for the mean time.

One of the tedious things about my solution to footnotes in Day One is that you have to do everything manually. The insertion of the footnotes plus the formatting, not to mention keeping count of the number of footnotes. For one or two footnotes this doesn’t seem like a big issue. But for several more it gets complicated.¹ You have to put the superscript (^), the number of the footnote, the horizontal line (which I think necessary) and the footnote itself. Therefore, I thought I could automate this–somewhat.

Here comes the magic script

So I though I’d ask Brett Terpstra² for advice, to see if this could be automated somehow. At the moment he’s probably quite busy with the premiere of his book 60 Mountain Lion Tips, which promises “to turn you into a Mac ninja”.

Despite that, I remembered he had released a service for writing multimarkdown footnotes inline. The idea is that you write your text like this

This is the regular text(*This is the footnote*), and you can drop the footnote in at any point.

You run the service and you get something like this

According to Brett “one nice thing about this syntax is that–if you’re previewing as you write–it italicizes the output to differentiate it until you’ve used the service to move it out of the main text.” So it’s a win-win situation.

I decided I would modify the script, even though I am a neophyte in ruby. The modification is practically nothing, so all the credit goes to Brett. Here’s the modified script

Update on Oct 2, 2012 – Brett took a look at the code and gave it the thumbs up.

I will definitely not go into the details of the script, but I’ve tried it and it works. The only thing I didn’t bother to make work was the part of the code that made sure that footnote reference titles aren’t duplicated if you have existing formatted footnotes in the document. It’s commented out, but feel free to further modify it or make any suggestions.

El camino más común después de un doctorado suele ser continuar con un postdoc y permanecer en la academia. De tal manera que se intenta sobrevivir con proyectos y contratos de investigación hasta que se pueda obtener alguna plaza de investigación o docencia. Sin embargo, una de los caminos menos recorridos y que parece más arriesgado es el de los negocios. En un artículo reciente en Soapbox Science Jerry Nguyen, Doctor en neurociencia, escribe

Su ansiedad partía del hecho en considerar que se había especializado tanto en un área en particular, que creía que nadie lo contrataría por ese hecho. La verdad es que el doctorado no se trata solo de especializarse en un área del conocimiento, sino también de obtener un entrenamiento que moldea tu forma de trabajar y pensar. El Dr. Nguyen continua resaltando cosas que aprendió durante su doctorado que a priori no hubiese considerado, como gestión de projectos, la capacidad de hacer buenas preguntas, y ser un autodidacta profesional. Es ésta última habilidad la que en mi opinión se ejercita más durante el doctorado. Gran parte del doctorado se trata de estar solo y sacar los resultados adelante con esfuerzo, dedicación y una gran dosis de auto-confianza. El artículo es corto pero resume bien alguna de las ventajas de la formación doctoral y las falencias también a la hora de embarcarse en la aventura del doctor/business man.

La tortura de esperar

Hace unos días leí un articulo en el New York Times acerca de la tortura de esperar, en particular cómo se nos hace eterno el tiempo si no estamos haciendo algo en concreto. De manera contraria, cuando estamos entretenidos la sensación es que el tiempo transcurre mucho más rápido.¹

El ejemplo que pusieron en el artículo me llamó mucho la atención en cuanto revela cosas propias del comportamiento humano. En el aeropuerto de Houston solían recibir demasiadas quejas por la larga espera al recoger el equipaje. Como respuesta, los directivos contrataron a más personas y el tiempo promedio de espera se redujo a 8 minutos, un tiempo excelente de acuerdo a los estándares internacionales. Pero las quejas continuaron.

En definitiva, resolvieron el problema trasladando las puertas de llegada al terminal de tal manera que los pasajeros debían caminar mucho más (de hecho, seis veces más) y tardaban unos 15 minutos hasta llegar a las cintas para recoger su equipaje. Por supuesto, al llegar a las cintas las maletas ya estaban esperándoles y como dato curioso cesaron las quejas.

El articulo continua al incluir resultados de investigaciones en este área del comportamiento humano y revela cuestiones interesantes como la percepción que tenemos del tiempo cuando estamos en una cola. Si la cola es larguísima, y muy a pesar de estar avanzando rápido, nos haremos a la idea que tardaremos mucho. Por eso en los parques de atracciones esconden las colas en forma de espirales, para darnos la sensación que es más corta de lo que parece. La verdad recomiendo que lean el articulo, pues revela cuestiones curiosas del comportamiento humano. Cuestiones que aunque sabiéndolas a ciencia cierta seguiremos repitiendo porque hacen parte de nuestra percepción y de lo que somos. Para nosotros el mundo es lo que parece y nunca al contrario.

Algunos hasta asegurarían que de esto se trata la relatividad. Pero no, esto es un puro efecto psicológico que parece estar incrustado en nosotros. ↩
