The mission of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is to improve the lives of people, businesses, and communities across Texas and beyond through high quality, relevant education. We hope that you will find our services beneficial if you want to learn more about agriculture and natural resources, family and community health, and/or 4-H and youth development. County Extension Agents are available in Washington County with expertise in these program areas to assist you.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service utilizes local program area committees to gain knowledge of issues or challenges facing residents of Washington County. Volunteer members of these committees help county agents identify, plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs for the residents of Washington County. Master volunteers are also being trained by Extension as Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners offering the opportunity for these volunteers to receive more intense training. Once certified, these master volunteers are able to offer their expertise to clientele. Many different volunteer opportunities are always available through Extension. Program area committees, Extension Education Clubs, Master Volunteer Programs, and 4-H Clubs are always in need of new volunteers.

Discover the ancient art of fermentation and unlock its unique flavors and health benefits by joining the Washington County Extension’s From Scratch Series: Fermentation. This hands-on workshop will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Washington County Expo VIP Building in Brenham (1305 East Blue Bell Road).Fermentation has been practiced for centuries and is known to offer numerous health benefits, including improved digestive health, boosted immunity, heart health support, weight management, and enhanced mental well-being. Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience while learning the science and traditions behind fermentation.
The workshop will be offered at two class times:
- 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The registration fee is $35 per participant, which includes hands-on instruction, take-home recipes and supplies, and educational materials. Space is limited to 12 participants per class, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
The PVAMU Extension Program and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Program, in partnership with Citizens State Bank, are excited to offer a free Credit 101 course on June 8, 2026, at the Washington County Expo Event Center, located at 1305 East Blue Bell Road in Brenham, Texas.
Participants will learn simple steps to raise their credit score and gain practical tools to take charge of their credit, turning confusion into control.
Registration and a light meal will be held from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., followed by the program from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The program includes educational materials, an opportunity to speak with a loan officer, door prizes, and more. In addition, a PVAMU Extension Specialist will be present to discuss USDA loans and grant opportunities.
While the program is free, registration is required by May 22, 2026.

Kids in the Kitchen: Baking Master Class invites youth ages 8–14 to a fun, hands-on baking experience at the Washington County Expo Event Center, 1305 East Blue Bell Road, Brenham. The same program is offered June 9, 2026 (1–5 PM) or June 10, 2026 (8 AM–12 PM) and includes making cinnamon rolls from scratch, decorating sugar cookies, preparing brownie mix to take home, and creating freezer cookie dough. Families are invited to roll up their sleeves and head to the kitchen for a fun and educational experience at Cooking Together: Building Skills, Meals, and Memories. This hands-on program is designed for one adult and one child (ages 8–13) to learn, cook, and connect side by side.
The event will take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Washington County Expo – Event Center, located at 1305 East Blue Bell Road in Brenham.
Participants will work together to prepare a delicious menu, including:
- Homemade pizza and garlic knots
- Fresh garden salad with dressing
- Chocolate chip cookie dough to take home and bake
This interactive class encourages teamwork while teaching valuable cooking skills that families can continue using at home.
Registration Details:
- $30 per pair with pre-registration by June 5, 2026
- $40 per pair with registration by June 10, 2026
- Fee includes both the adult and child; both are required to attend and participate

The “Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER)” was revised and updated and will be effective October 11, 2015. A major change in the revision now requires all food employees to complete an accredited food handlers training program within 60 days of employment, effective September 16, 2016.
A food handlers course accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services is being offered by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Washington County. Food Safety: It’s In Your Hands is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, 2026, starting at 2:45pm at the Washington County Extension Office at 1305 East Blue Bell Road, Brenham, Texas 77833.
This 2-hour course will now be required for all food service employees to help promote the service of safe food. The certificate is good for 2 years and is valid anywhere in the State of Texas. The course is a basic overview of food safety practices that are necessary to ensure that safe food is served at your establishment. Practices discussed include good personal hygiene, cross contamination, and time and temperature abuse.
To register for the course, call the Extension Office at 979-277-6212 or register online. Registration can also be done in-person the day of the course. The cost is $20.00 per person and must be paid in full before the course begins. The class is taught in English but Spanish handouts are available if requested in advance.

About 1,000 donations are needed daily to help save lives in the Texas Gulf Coast region. That is why we encourage individuals to Commit for Life to help ensure a strong blood supply is always available.
The Washington County Extension Office is working with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center to host a Blood Drive at the Washington County Expo Event Center on July 21, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM. We invite community members to roll up their sleeves and help save lives by donating blood.

Discover the magic of sourdough baking at an upcoming hands-on Sourdough Making Class hosted at the Washington County Expo. The class will take place on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Participants will learn the full sourdough process — from starter to bake — in an engaging, instructional setting. Each attendee will leave with their own sourdough starter and dough ready for the oven, making it easy to continue baking at home.

Each child will design their own apron to wear during class and take home as a keepsake, prepare a fresh and colorful fruit parfait, create a personal tortilla pizza with a variety of fun toppings, and decorate cupcakes to enjoy and share.
This interactive event encourages creativity, builds basic kitchen skills, and promotes healthy eating habits—all in a safe, supportive environment.
