I don't expect it to make me a million bucks, but this is an original invention. Make a small boat by folding an empty raisin box. It really floats! (And if you scrape a bit of soap into one end, it will move across the water.)

BONUS: "Pushing Pixels" photo series

"Pushing pixels" with a digital camera in low-light conditions.

The slide show above was exported from Google Picasa. I shot this series of 40 images earlier this year while visiting family in Massachusetts. It was taken in less than 30 minutes in low-light conditions very early one morning.

The scene consists of a silhouetted barn and orange street lamp to the left. The full moon was setting. I was thinking of 'spinning the moonlight' by moving the camera as the shutter clicked. I tried several techniques including swinging with straight arms and spinning with my wrist around the axis of the lens. For most shots the camera was set to 3.2 sec exposure and f/5.6 aperture.

Commentary: Brown, Chapter 8 : Re-education

Brown points to three pressures felt by educational institutions: 1) a changing student body, 2) greater competition, and 3) new technologies. Again in this chapter Brown presses the distinction between information and knowledge; this time on the systemic level:

"...envisioned change will not happen or will not be fruitful until people look beyond the simplicities of information and individuals to the complexities of learning, knowledge, judgment, communities, organizations, and institutions. That way, it seems more likely that change will reorganize the higher education system, rather than simply disorganize it" (p. 213).

Review: Librarything v. Shelfari

These two book cataloging services are both in the early "beta" phase of development. The first, LibraryThing seems to put more emphasis on collective cataloging, the second on sharing reader opinions.

I thought Shelfari had a more pleasing user interface.

Brown Reading

Quotes from Brown's chapter entitled, "Learning--in Theory and in Practice."

"The shift toward knowledge may (or should) represent a shift toward people" (p. 120).
"Learning to be requires more than just information. It requires the ability to engage in the practice in question" (p. 128).
Regarding 'stolen knowledge', knowledge that is picked up by watching the practice of another person..."A demand-side view of this sort of knowledge theft suggests how important it is not to force-feed learning, but to encourage it, both provoking the need and making the resources available for people to 'steal'" (p. 136).

LIBRARY BLOG: Bradford County Florida

Our future parking lot. The concrete posts are the beginnings of the columns at the meeting room doors. The yellow piles are truckloads of limerock, which will be the underlayment for the asphalt paving. Limerock (lime rock, no connection with "limerick") starts out this color, but if it's exposed to the sun, it bleaches out really white.

The construction blog caught my interest and drove me to this site. It was touted by the SirsiDynix Institute for its effectiveness in presenting construction updates and generating public comment.

I think it was clever to feature the other Bradford County Library blogs on the construction page. Curious onlookers are presented with a full range of library services. So the kid (or big kid in us all) who has a penchant for peeking through the fence at a construction site can also discover lots of good things that the library has to offer.

Brown makes the point that "the ends of information, after all, are human ends" (p. 18). That is my philosophy. The value of tools and techniques is lost if we lose site of real people and their day to day experience.
