How to sell on Amazon

… Or how I traded wits with the Nigerian Mafia.

Unused, Unsold and Unwanted

In the past, I have disposed of my used equipment on eBay. Writing the perfect sales copy, creating images and positioning myself against other sellers in the hope to fetch a fair price took too much of my valuable time, hence I didn’t bother going through the motions and left much of my equipment unused, unsold and unwanted.

Amazon.com to the rescue

Most semi-professional photographers obsess about future equipment. I usually spend a bit of time on Amazon, hopping around, looking for new toys. One day, I discovered that my old camera was still for sale, although only from the “Amazon Marketplace”, or in other words from people selling their used cameras.

I had found a perfectly written sales page, linked on a high traffic website that probably ranked well for all the right keywords. All I had to do was to list my camera and wait.

I did not have to take any photographs, set up the the seller account up in a matter of minutes, and I had posted my camera in about two minutes.

Suddenly I realized how easy and fast the setup process was, especially when compared to eBay. An important factor is also the trust people place in Amazon, which should help with the sale.

I was thrilled and searched Amazon for a lens I also want to sell, but came up short. So I guess this one needs to go on eBay after all.

The Nigerians enter the scene

Imagine my excitement when I received a message that I had sold my camera in just a few hours time. After answering some inquiries from an overseas customer regarding the camera’s condition, they snagged it and I had an order confirmation from Amazon in my mailbox. Everything looked good; the email came with a whole bunch of security certificates, was well written and bore the Amazon logo. The buyer’s address was in Nigeria.

Wait a minute! Nigeria? Aren’t those people that scam everyone over the internet from Nigeria and didn’t the Nigerians play a crucial role in the exploitation of the aliens in District 9? Reason enough to investigate further.

The email seems to come from Amazon:

Let’s see if it really does, by looking at the header:

Clicking on “show details” in Gmail revealed this:

It is interesting to find out that Amazon ran out of email addresses and now uses the domain accountant.com. They didn’t even have enough money to register the domain and left this to “World Media Group, LLC”, a company that seems to own a lot of domains but has no further affiliation with Amazon.

Well then I thought, let’s check my Amazon Seller Account. Not surprisingly, Amazon still lists the camera and I didn’t see any orders.

Looking at the header is not sufficient to avoid trouble as this example of another Nigerian shows:

A skillful emailer can fake the sender’s address, something my other “Nigerian friend”, Jennifer, doesn’t seem to know (yet).

Jennifer inquired about the order status of her shipment. She faked some urgency, claiming that the camera was a birthday present, and that she was hoping to receive it in time. Normally, I would have no reason to doubt her urgency. And my own desire to get positive feedback should keep me from thorough investigation and asking too many questions.

Trying to get back at the Nigerian Mafia

After I convinced myself that this was not a legitimate transaction, I sent a reply back to Jennifer:

“Hello Jennifer,

I will send it out as fast as I can. I checked the shipping rates and it seems I am $10 short. Can you just buy an Amazon gift voucher and email it to me?”

With this email, a short dance began. Jennifer responded by telling me that she checked shipping rates at USPS and that she was not short and I learned that the Nigerian Mafia is not only clever but knows their way around the USPS internet presence. Probably something they learned on a previous scheme gone bad.

I mentioned to Jennifer that the package is heavier than she assumed, she replied that she would pay me after I confirm shipment. She even knew that the post offices would close on Veterans Day, urging me to ship the package now.

We traded a few more emails but came to a stalemate. No gift voucher for me, no camera for Jennifer. She gave up.

Matt, the front man for Gang Number 2, the one with the spoofed amazon.com email, is still emailing me, phishing for a free camera. I suspect that he will give up too and that I again will not be rewarded with an Amazon gift voucher from the Nigerians.

Hurray, my first sale as an Amazon Marketplace Seller

Just two days after I put my camera on Amazon, a real sale came through. I almost missed it in the noise of emails generated by spammers with similar headlines. This time however, there was no shipping address and no link in the email.

After I logged in to my seller account, I found clear instructions on what to do and how to contact the buyer to inform her/him of the progress.

Amazonian Rules

You cannot sell electronic items overseas via Amazon. “Buyers” asking for overseas shipment are a dead giveaway.

Amazon does not reveal the customer address via email.

Amazon emails do not contain a bunch of links to initiate action.

Safety Precautions

Always go to your Amazon seller account and verify the status.

If you have any doubts, you can call Amazon via the web interface. They usually connect you within minutes to a real person who is very professional.

Do not follow a login link in an email. Always go directly to Amazon.com and click through to your seller account from there.

Overall, I found the entire process very easy and the intervention of the Nigerians amusing. I was surprised by the level of sophistication they showed trying to steal from me.

If you handle all transactions via the web interface on Amazon, you should be fine.

Computer problems and free pictures

After I suffered yet another computer crash I finally decided to head over to Fry's and walk home with a Quad Processor Computer, 8GB of RAM and Windows 7. Seems like the motherboard on my old computer was finally fried after it refused to recognize any of my hard drives. I added two monitors to the computer and can now enjoy the editing process again.

I have not even installed Photoshop on my new computer yet, but I am already editing photos like a champ. I downloaded the new Lightroom 3.0 Beta version from Adobe. It took some time to get used to the interface, but I am coming around to like it very much. I think I am going to write a review of Lightroom, maybe pitching it against another one of my favorite RAW editors, Silkypix PRO.

I am completely fed up by the licensing policies of Adobe, which may ultimately keep me from buying Lightroom. I am not sure yet. As my raid array disintegreated, I had to reinstall Photoshop. Then later I decided to build a raid again and install Photoshop again. Apparently the software kept recognizing a new computer each time, possibly because of the raid. Now I have to call Adobe and explain the situation every time I wish to re-install Photoshop again. My requests to erase all licenses from their Servers and let me re-install was simply denied, leaving me frustrated with a useless $600 software.

The most recent photographs I uploaded to my Golden Gate Park Gallery are done with Lightroom only. Those images also do not have any watermarks anymore. For the last few years I have included watermarks that were barely visible, but now they are gone altogether. I am working on an idea to make all images on this website publicly available for free, but I do require attribution (hyperlink on websites and url on prints). Stay tuned for more information on free pictures.

Fall has befallen the Eastern Sierra Nevada. The countless aspen trees light up the landscape in bright orange hues. I visited the area last weekend and took enough photographs to generate my new gallery on Fall in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. I hope as always that you enjoy the pictures and come back for more soon.

How to find great places to photograph

Learn about the tools that I use to navigate to great locations!

I spent the past months hunting for places to photograph in California and then writing about it. California is famous for its photographic icons such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Yosemite or Death Valley but it has so much more to offer to photographers. Not many of you may know about the alien Tifoni formations of Salt Point State Park, the Sea Otters of Moss Landing or the gushing Whiskeytown Falls.

Read about the free or inexpensive tools I use to plot my way to these photo spots.

Topographic Maps

Topographic maps are indispensable to find places and to pre-visualize photo locations. Topographic maps are two-dimensional representations of the three dimensional landscapes. Contour lines connect points of equal elevation. With a bit of training, you can learn to distinguish canyons, valleys, mountains, ridges or gentle slopes. When you plot your trek, you can find out how steep it will be and where to go to photograph great scenery.

How to read Topographic Maps

Elevation Lines, and Landscape features

On this map, you can see a bold elevation line marked 6200 feet. If a trail would follow this exact line, it would be completely level.

You can also see a bold line marked 6600 feet. This means the bold line between 6200ft and 6600ft marks 6400ft of elevation (I have added the red markers for your convenience) and that each of the thinner lines adds another 40 feet. Keep following the 6400ft line to the round peak and you can see that the brown line around the top also must be 6600. Ergo this map shows a peak on its lower right. The trail zigzags uphill from the bottom right to the top right, as the elevation rises from below 6200ft to above 6400ft.

Steepness and direction of landscape features

The density of the lines correlates to the steepness of the terrain. This is easy to imagine, as the elevation gain per distance is much larger.

This map of Yosemite Valley and El Capitan illustrates this point. The steep cliff forces the lines of equal elevation to cluster very densely. We can see the elevation at the valley floor is 4000 feet and at the top of El Capitan is 7569 feet. Now you know which direction the cliff drops.

Here is how this looks in real life. Compare the picture to the map! Imagine standing to the bottom right of the cliff, just outside of the map.

Using topographic maps, you can pre-visualize how places look. With some practice, you will see the canyons or mountains. You can even find out which angle the sun or moon need to shine to light the subject just the way you want. Combined with the software Heavenly Opportunity, you can find out when the stars will align for you.

Outdoor mapping with your GPS

I use a Garmin Venture HC handheld GPS for mapping while I am outside. It is inexpensive, has a color display and sufficient memory to hold topographic maps covering a large area. Its GPS receiver is accurate even underneath a dense forest canopy.

Topographic maps are wonderful for planning but they are even more important for navigating while you are out hiking or while you are on an off-road drive. Imagine heading for a cliff and not knowing about it or without finding a way around it. The maps will tell you where you can safely go. I always pre-load my GPS receiver with topographic maps just for these cases; especially since things never fully go according to plan.

Free topographic maps for Garmin GPS

Garmin topographic maps are expensive, but I found a place that has free maps for your Mapsource software. Mapsource is the mapping software that comes with your Garmin GPS. Mapsource is your control center. You use it to communicate with your GPS device, upload maps and waypoints and to download your track logs. The base map that comes with Mapsource is worthless for outdoor explorers.

You can download free maps here:

GPS File Depot

This website has many free topographic maps for the United States and even some other countries. The website also contains tutorials, showing you how to create your own maps from publicly available USGS (US Geological Survey) data.

Free Global Mapper and Terraserver

If you do not have a GPS receiver or if you are looking for a viewer for the USGS maps directly, I recommend the Global Mapper Software (dlgv32). The software directly interfaces with Terraserver, where it can download topographic maps of the entire United States for free.

The feature-rich software is not very intuitive. I have used it to generate waypoint plots of my travels for documentation and to generate most of the pictures on this page. You can also use it to plan your trips.

Since the USGS maps are available everywhere in the United States at 24k resolution, you should check out this software.

My iPhone and Terraserver

As a backup to my GPS and for on-the go planning I use Topo Maps on my iPhone. Although the iPhone GPS is subpar when compared to my Garmin, its large bright display, the free maps and the cheap software that can download maps on demand make it a good solution, too. The software is very intuitive and downloads are fast (on WiFi). The maps are small enough to download via 3G without AT&T restrictions.

You can measure distances and find your position on the map, but you cannot search for Points of Interest and you cannot route, since the maps are just raster graphics (Garmin maps are vector based).

I recommend that you get an extended battery shoe or auxiliary charger for your iPhone, since the GPS receiver is very power hungry. I have an iGo charger that I can operate with AA batteries to juice up the phone while I am in the field. It is a bit flimsy but it gets the job done.

Google Earth and Panoramio

I also like picture peeping from home with Google Maps. I wrote an article about Google Maps for Photographers a while back. Turning on the Panoramio (under Geographic Web) puts little blue markers on the maps. Click a marker and a photograph appears. You can get a sense of a place and maybe estimate its photographic potential from these photos.

Also nice is the sun feature that lets you see which areas are lit when, which is useful when you hike in a canyon where it gets dark sooner.

Books

I own most travel guides by DK and Lonely Planet, but I also own a large number of specialist guides that help me pick the right place for photography. Here are some of the books I use to find my way around.

My website

Recently I spent a lot of time writing about photo locations in California on my website: California Photo Scout. Read details about photo locations to well known and little known places on this site. The database is growing every week.

I did not find all the places through extensive research. I discovered some of them by luck, too. Take a detour and stray from the predictable path to discover new places!

This is exactly how we discovered the Town of Locke by coincidence.

Timing often plays a critical role too as our recent visit to McGee Canyon proofed. While trees at most places in the area were either still green or already lost most leafs, McGee Canyon was just perfect.

In the end, everything will depend on your tenacity. By researching properly, you can improve your odds, but you still need to do a lot of legwork.

Photograph Comic-Con

Every year a huge crowd of people gathers at the San Diego Convention Center to celebrate pop culture and movies in an exceptional spectacle called Comic-Con. Many attendees dress up in beautiful costumes, handcrafted in countless hours with an astonishing devotion and attention to detail.

For us photographers the colorful figures exert a strong pull to visit and photograph the event. Two years ago, I decided to fly to San Diego to see what the fuzz was all about and of course to take photographs.

How to photograph People at Comic-Con

I find that many photographers are troubled about taking the photograph of a stranger without asking for permission. Street photography is very different from landscape photography. We feel restricted through norms of society and our own inhibition.

A large gathering like Comic-Con with many like-minded photographers makes it very easy to overcome those fears. If you cannot pull the trigger here, street photography clearly is not your game. That is perfectly ok.

How to overcome your inhibition and get your subjects to relax

Look non-threatening and friendly. Smile and behave normally

People usually mirror your behavior right back to you. If you look grumpy, grouchy and tense, others will assume that your intend is not honorable and will automatically take a negative attitude toward you. Smile at a baby and it will smile back, make a sad face and it will cry. Although higher brain functions prevail in adults, our mind still works on this level. People will not like you but won’t know why.

Respect your subjects

If you respect people, they will not mind you taking their photograph. If you laugh about a person and then try to take their photograph, they will automatically assume you want to take a funny picture. If you respect a person, they usually do not mind at all and may actually strike a pose. Do not just pretend to respect people. True emotions usually shine through. There is no reason to disrespect another human being.

Loosen up

Relax and enjoy yourself. Your photography is a beautiful thing. See yourself like a news or press photographer. You are here to create wonderful pieces of art. With the right attitude, your inhibitions will disappear.

Composition

Contrast or Complement

In this picture on the left, the visitor strikes a pose that is very fitting to the movie poster right behind him. They complement each other.

In the picture on the right, we have an example for contrast.

Here are two more examples:

Girl framed between two trash cans (contrast)

Guy who looks like guy on poster (complement)

Color

Look for color contrast (complementary colors) or color uniformity.

The colors at Comic-Con are simply amazing.

Venture

Once you have successfully shot strangers at Comic-Con, it is time to graduate and move into the nearby Gaslamp Quarter for some city street shootings.

The same rules apply in the city. Smile and look non-threatening. Use a short focal length and leave your paparazzi telephoto lens at home. I have yet to encounter somebody who got seriously mad for being shot with a small lens.

If you had enough of the Gaslamp Quarter, you could walk to nearby Seaport Village. Take a break from the nerve wrecking people shots and enjoy some unique skyline views.

Oregon Pictures

Oregon is California's rainy neighbor in the north. I like traveling to Oregon. The state is very diverse and full of color, even in summer when California is mostly brownish.

But Oregon has much more to offer than wet coastal regions. Eastern Oregon is also very dry, but the colorful John Day Fossil Beds and the very different landscape invite travelers seeking for the path less traveled.

The incredibly scenic views and deep rich colors Crater Lake National Park offfer a fascinating introduction into the seismic volcanic history of Oregon. Once you have aroused your curiousity for everything volcanic, check out Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

After a tour through the wonderful landscapes of southern and eastern Oregon, relax in Portland, Oregon most populous and lively cities. From here you can explore the Columbia River Gorge with its many waterfalls on a casual day trip.

I finally found the time to upload new pictures that were on my computer far too long. Enjoy!

Los Angeles Photography

Since I am in the process of uploading more images, I decided to add more content to my Los Angeles Galleries as well. L.A. is a giant narcissistic city ecosystem that didn't hold much of a lure for me, but it has it's beautiful sides too.

I usually visit L.A. on trips to the far south or on return trips from the far south. I took this photograph from Mulholland Drive on the way back from Anza Borrego. I usually prefer the serenity of the desert over the stress of big cities, but since stress only happens in our heads, we can chose to ignore it entirely, let it pass right through us. The less other people affect my well-being, the more attractive cities like L.A. become and the more I see, the more I want to see.

I think Los Angeles is a city that grows on you. It took me almost a decade, but slowly I am starting to appreciate what the city has to offer and simply ignore the shady neighborhoods, traffic jams and hectic and narcissistic population. Behind the shallow star cult, the boasting and the huge social differences that make up this city, there is beauty waiting. I will be back, but not during the heat of summer when everyone is just a bit nuttier than usual.

New Pictures of the San Francisco Bay Area

Today I have uploaded a lot new photographs and created new galleries to hold my new Bay Area pictures. Please take some time and browse through the galleries to enjoy everything the bay area has to offer.

Even I get surprised after many years of living in the Bay Area. I discovered the overview above on a hike through the Marin Headlands.

Other great views include Lands End and the views from Mt. Tamalpais. I also included some pictures of the surrounding communties of Sausalito and Tiburon.

Check out my San Francisco Bay Area Gallery and come back soon for new pictures. I have spent the entire spring photographing and have much to show in the coming weeks.

Predict the moon for better photos

You do not have to be a magician to put the moon where you want it in your pictures.

In this article, I am going to reveal how you can use software to predict the exact moonrise time, direction, angles and phases. You can use this information, in combination with a simple Google Earth trick, to enhance your composition with a celestial display de extraordinaire.

Selecting a viable subject

Step1: Find the angular range of Moon Rise or Moon Set

Software: Heavenly Opportunity (Shareware)

When I decided to photograph the moonrise over the Golden Gate Bridge some time ago, I already knew that it must be possible to have the full moon rise over the bridge. Skip to the next step if you are as confident about your location as I was.

Heavenly Opportunity

Heavenly Opportunity is a software package to predict sunrise, sunset, twilight, moonrise, moonset and the azimuth, directions and phases. You can download a trial version from their website.

Open the software and pick a location from the drop down menu. You need to enter GPS coordinates for locations outside the US.

Easily finding GPS coordinates of any location

A simple way to find the coordinates is through Google maps. Simply browse to your desired location in Google maps, click the link button in the upper right corner and copy the address. It should look something like this:

Copy the link and paste it in a text editor.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=machu+picchu,+peru&
sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=50.51141,76.464844&ie=UTF8&ll=-13.163496,-72.545911
&spn=0.003824,0.004667&t=h&z=18

The latitude and longitude are the two numbers behind ll (not sll). I have marked them with bold characters. The first number is the latitude of your location. The second number is your longitude. In my example the two numbers are -13.163496 and -72.545911. Verify the numbers by entering them in the Google Maps search field.

Find the Azimuth range:

Now you need to go to the date setting in Heavenly Opportunity and use the right arrow to skip through the next couple of months. Jot down the minimum Azimuth and the maximum Azimuth for the moonrise and for the moonset.

Step2: Decide what angle you need

Next you need to determine the exact angle you require for your shot.

I highly recommend Google Earth to every photographer. I often use it to research a photo location, determine shadows, calculate distances, best times to photograph and other things. This time we will use it to determine the Azimuth of the moon.

Zoom to your location (or use the GPS coordinates from Step 1). Now click on the ruler icon in the toolbar and set your ruler start point to the exact location you will be standing during the shot. Drag the ruler across your subject. The heading indicated in the ruler window is your Azimuth. If the Azimuth falls between the min/max angles previously determined for either moonrise or moon set, you should be able to get the photograph.

Finding a date and time for your adventure

Now you need to determine a time where the moon aligns for you. Go back to Heavenly Opportunity and start skipping days until you find a day that closest matches your angle, has a nearly full moon and has the moonrise time after the sunset so that it is dark enough.

In the example above, I determined that May 8th, 2009 would be a good time to photograph the moon from the Marin Headlands viewpoint. HO predicted the moonrise to occur 5 minutes after sunset and the angle is the exact angle I indicated in the screen capture of Google Earth.

You can also print out the exact altitude angle vs. time for the sun and the moon. This can be very useful if you need the moon in a certain position, like above a skyscraper or underneath a natural arch.

<strike>Un</strike>explained Deviations

I shot the first picture from a different location further down the hill. The viewpoint area closes down after dark and I had to leave.

When I stood at the exact spot, I chose on Google Earth, I expected the moon to rise somewhere close to the left pillar of the Golden Gate Bridge. Compare the screen shot of Google Earth above for reference with the angle predicted by HO.

The second picture in this article shows the view I had from the same spot. The moon rose much closer to the right pillar. Currently I have no explanation for the discrepancy. I know that the images in Google Earth are just stitched Bitmap files and since the Earth is round need to be warped. This can cause some distortions, but I have no indication that this is what threw off my calculation.

As John, the author of HO, kindly pointed out, this deviation was basically just user error (see comments below). Unchecking "Adjust for magnetic declination" will make the result correspond better with Google Earth. This option is really useful if you have the luxury to be able to scout your location far ahead of time with a compass in your hand. Travel Photographers often have to rely on intelligence gathering sessions with Google instead. Thanks John and good luck to all of you moon photographers.

Zen photographer - Part 3

Learn how to have more fun taking better pictures.

This article is part three of my series on the Zen photographer.

In part 1 I introduced some concepts of mindfulness and how they apply to photography and in part 2 I talked about Silence and Trust. Reading the articles in order may yield a better understanding of the subject.

The article series is part of a larger series on better photography. I hope to answer some questions on inspiration and stimulation of the brain with this series.

Letting go - non attachment

The thought of a place is not the place.

Our minds are like magnets that catch every thought passing by. We ponder what was and what will be, what we have said, what we should have said or what we will say.

Thoughts create new thoughts, which feed other thoughts. Our mind spins endlessly faster and faster until we get distracted with new thoughts.

There is no way out of this maze, but our mind will not recognize this. We often cannot solve our problems by thinking about them, but we keep thinking.

We are always preoccupied. Many thoughts do not even make sense, but we think them anyways. Can you focus completely on this article or are other thoughts going through your head RIGHT NOW?

We need to break this endless cycle and learn how to let go, how to recognize our thoughts for what they are and let them pass without clinging to them.

We cling

We cling to our thoughts and ideas. We paint a picture in our minds about an upcoming event, a trip or a meeting. We envision how things are going to be and we cling to this idea, even when things start turning out differently. We only get frustrated if things do not go our way.

People who are involved with us, maybe fellow travelers, have preconceptions too. Theirs often clash with ours.

Things rarely turn out how we imagine. We need to approach every moment fresh, without judgment and we need to let go.

Let go

For my photography, this means that I take every situation with a clear mind. I am getting better at improvising and making the best of each situation. You can do the same.

Simply look at each moment and each location as if you were just born into this world. Identify what you like and forget about everything else.

Benefits

You will not be disappointed if the weather is not the way you envisioned it, if tourists have overrun a place or if the landscape looks different from what you thought and you will learn to maximize the potential each situation awards you.

Behind every lost opportunity is a new unique opportunity waiting for you. If you can let go, you will be able to see it and capitalize on it.

The universe is neither for you nor against you. If you can take the way things fall into place and just roll with it, you will be a winner, I guarantee it!

Non striving

Photography is very competitive. It is easy to underestimate our capabilities. Discussions in internet forums revolve around technicalities, but many of them completely fail in most other regards.

We often forget to focus on the most important aspect of photography, having fun. If you try too hard, your pictures will show it. Accept your strength and recognize that you are already perfect in many ways. Not everyone will like your work and not everyone will see the world you do.

We are constantly striving for a better future or for some elusive goal that we hope to accomplish later.

You already are in the future. Your current place is the result of all the previous thoughts and actions. Why wait and postpone everything just to find us looking into the future when we get there.

Slow down, take time and be yourself. Enjoy this moment as the culmination of everything that was and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. You are standing at a wonderful place, with a camera and you can enjoy the beauty of the world. You were born with two eyes that see wondrous things.

Acceptance

Learn to accept things for what they are and do not burden yourself with problems all the time. We constantly wish for something we think need to be happy, but we never accomplish true happiness. Learn to be happy regardless of your circumstances.

Enjoy every moment and learn to accept yourself and your feelings, positive or negative. Let the feelings wash over your, but do not cling to them. Take things for what they are, not what you want them to be.

Accept the world and the people in it, nature and the weather.

Act out of mindfulness and not out of fear or other short fused reactions.

Subscribe to my feed to be among the first to read the next articles. I promise to keep it interesting.
