Washington, DC - The study shows that as the U.S. enters a period of low growth in gasoline consumption, the combination of new global refining centers and the rising costs imposed by the legislation will distort the competitive position of domestic refiners and could idle and bring permanent closure to as much as 8 million barrels per day (mb/d) of the nation’s 17.5 mb/d of domestic refining capacity. Direct and indirect job losses could rise to 400,000 across the 2015-2030 forecast period.

Shippers are lengthening their payment schedules as carriers struggle with depressed rates and fluctuating fuel surcharges. Consequently, brokers and 3PLs find themselves extended on both sides of the logistics equation.

“Brokers as Bankers” features a presentation by Winston Aston, CEO of TransCredit, a recognized expert on credit and payment issues in the transportation industry. Aston has spent the last 23 years as CEO of TransCredit reporting on transportation industry credit. Previously, he operated a trucking company with an in-house brokerage for 14 years.

“The best brokers are playing the role of bankers, as they are forced to pick up the days between shipper remittance and carrier payment,” Aston explained. “Even when the shipper pays late, these brokers still meet their commitments to pay carriers within 30 days.”

Aston’s remarks will be followed by an online question-and-answer session as well as a panel discussion with John Miller, vice president, Hybrid Transit Systems; Greg Roush, president of Smart Lines; and Steve Blair, general manager for TransCore’s Broker Transportation Management Systems.

Washington D.C. - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced that the Federal Transit Administration last week achieved a crucial milestone: it beat the September 1st deadline to provide all states and local communities 50 percent of their Recovery Act transit formula dollars.

In fact, FTA provided nearly 90 percent of its $7.5 billion transit stimulus money to states and local communities. FTA is managing an additional $900 million in discretionary funds for New Starts projects, the Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction and Tribal Transit programs and oversight for a total of $8.4 billion.

“This money will not only create jobs, it will also allow people to get to and from those jobs safely, reliably, and comfortably,” LaHood said. “As we put America back to work, we will also be creating a cleaner environment and reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.”

Since President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) into law on Feb. 17, grants totaling more than $6.7 billion have been made available for transit improvements throughout the country. The majority of these grants will be used to purchase new vehicles, increase safety and security initiatives and construct, rehabilitate, and maintain the various transit systems.
