Recognized for advancing the standards of architectural education, training and practice, Dr. William W. Braham, FAIA, Edward B. Jakmauh, FAIA, Gilbert Rosenthal, FAIA, and Harris M. Steinberg, FAIA, have been named fellows of the American Institute of Architects.

Nationally, the AIA elevated 82 architects to its College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance; there are fewer than 2500 distinguished with this honor. The elevation to fellowship is selective and conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership.

Braham is associate professor and asscociate chair of the University of Pennsylvania's department of architecture. Through his teaching and writing, he has established a powerful approach to environmental technologies in architecture, combining technical analysis with historical and theoretical accounts. He received his PhD in Architecture and M. Arch. from University of Pennsylvania, as well as a B.S. in Engineering from Princeton.

Jakmauh is vice president and principal at Ballinger, where he is responsible for oversight of all of the firm's health facilities programming, planning and design work. In his 30 years with the firm, he has completed large-scale projects that have acted as catalysts for urban rejuvenation. He received a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University School of Design and Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute.

Rosenthal is principal at Wallace Roberts & Todd (WRT) in Philadelphia. He has been instrumental in forging the firm's practice in community planning and design. Specializing in the revitalization of distressed public housing and the creation of new affordable and mixed-income communities, Rosenthal has had a broad impact on dozens of our nation's cities. Rosenthal received a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and Master of Architecture from Harvard University School of Design.

Steinberg is founding director of Penn Praxis, established by the University of Pennsylvania as a vehicle to carry out practical and applied projects for external clients under the direction of Penn Design faculty, providing opportunities for student and faculty development in service to the greater community. Co-facilitator of the National Summit on School Design, he is also chair of the national AIA Committee for Leadership Education. Steinberg received a B.A. in History and M.Arch. from University of Pennsylvania.

Schuylkill Neighbors Receive Landmark Building Award

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects honors two significant eighteenth-century country houses along the banks of the Schuylkill river with the 2006 AIA Philadelphia Landmark Building Award: John Bartram's garden and house, and The Woodlands (home of William Hamilton). The Award recognizes the intrinsic value of an existing building, rather than a current preservation or restoration project, it is unique among existing award programs and annually draws attention to an overlooked, under-appreciated, or endangered building.

Bartram's House and Garden
Built in 1731 by John Bartram (1699-1777), who is frequently acknowledged to be America's first great botanist, naturalist, and plant explorer. His son John Jr. and granddaughter Ann are credited with creating the garden, then a flourishing commercial nursery at the family property along the Schuylkill River in West Philadelphia. The property became part of Philadelphia's public park system in 1891, and is now operated as a museum and public garden, in cooperation with the Fairmount Park Commission.

In recent years, Bartram's Garden has undertaken significant restoration projects in both buildings and grounds. An adjacent industrial tract as been reclaimed and turned into a wildflower meadow; Bartram's original "fish pond" has been carefully excavated and reconstructed, and an interpretive wetland along the Schuylkill River has been created. Bartram's garden and house has retained its original relationship to the river - no railroad tracks or oil tanks bar the view, or path, from house to river. A walk through the gardens leads one past a restored "kitchen garden" and ancient Gingko trees to the old stone cider press on the riverbank. Today, the Garden sponsors a variety of public events, including its well-known holiday greens sale in December, and the native plant sale in May.

The Woodlands
William Hamilton's grand country house on the Schuylkill River, clearly fits the Landmark Building Award's criteria of "overlooked/ underappreciated." This National Historic Landmark has been in private ownership for many years, and only recently has begun to be more publicly accessible, so this lack is somewhat understandable. Yet the house and grounds surpass the historical significance of many better-known properties.

William Hamilton (son of Philadelphia lawyer Andrew Hamilton) is credited with creating the current form of the house. Although there were earlier structures on the property, Hamilton greatly enlarged the house in 1788, after returning from England, where he saw and absorbed a new style of "Adamesque" Federal architecture. After passing through several Hamilton descendents, the Woodlands house and property were purchased in the 1830's and turned into a country cemetery, patterned after Laurel Hill. The property remains a cemetery today; the house, which served as the cemetery caretaker's residence for many years, has received a Save America's Treasures grant for what one hopes will be the first of many restoration projects.

Actions by Friends of the Trenton Bath House and the recent diligent reporting in the media have forced a happy ending to the saga of the Trenton Bath House.

Mercer County will use Green Acres funds to buy the property and put historic preservation and conservation easements in place. Ewing Township, which will own the main JCC building, will operate the Bath House and pool as a community recreation site. Four acres at the far back of the JCC property will be sold independently by the current owners.

This is an ideal solution that reflects well on the efforts of many people. The architecture and preservation communities actively voiced their concerns. County officials deserve praise for diligently pursuing a complicated transaction and for having the vision to see that the Bath House will add to the historic and cultural resources of the county. The press played a critical role in making the public aware that the Bath House might have closed permanently on September 5 if there had not been a quick sale.

AIA Philadelphia's Associate Committee is seeking volunteers and contributors from Philadelphia's design community to participate in the Third Annual Halloween Spooktacular, an event in service of the Children's Crisis Treatment Center (CcTC). The two-part event was created to provide the children of CcTC and their families an opportunity to safely celebrate Halloween in an imaginative environment.

Part 1 - Design Charrette, October 14
The first component of the event challenges designers with the task of building theatrical façades that will create an imaginary streetscape for trick-or-treating called Spooky Hallow. This year, participants will partner with CHAD students for the charrette. Materials will be provided. Register your team of 4 to 6 or as an individual. Meals and give-aways will be provided.

Part 2 - Spooktacular III, October 28
During Part Boo!, volunteers give away candy as the Children of CcTC and their families trick-or-treat through Spooky Hallow. Other fun Halloween activities such as mask making will provide the children a positive and memorable experience. Children will vote for favorite façade and the winning team receives a special prize.

Volunteers will earn IDP credits for Category D-16: Professional and Community Service. AIA CE LUs are also available. To register for either day, contact Pat (e-mail preferred) at pat@aiaphila.org or call 215-569-3186, ext. 105.
Window on Architects: Hooper Shiles

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

Hooper Shiles Architects (HSA) takes an innovative approach to all our projects – commercial, educational, interiors and residential - and believes in the importance of balancing professionalism and fun in the design process. Whether practicing sustainable design for sound land use, incorporating a hidden staircase into a residential addition, adapting a turn-of-the-century power station for commercial occupancy, or creatively utilizing materials from a site for interior finishes, passion and process go hand-in-hand.

Mitch Shiles, AIA, along with the late Philip Hooper, AIA, founded the firm over 18 years ago amid the rebuilding of St. Croix after the devastation of Hurricane Hugo. Shiles has seen his firm’s evolution into a highly diversified and award winning studio with services in architecture, planning, interior design and programming. However, regardless of this growth, HSA still provides principal involvement in all stages of the process and a team approach for a unique solution to even the toughest design challenge. Careful collaboration between HSA’s studio and the client not only yields a successful project, but is enjoyable for all involved, from start to finish. Today, Shiles and senior associates Janet Colesberry, AIA, and Matt Heckendorn, AIA make sure they are having as much fun as the client when it comes to architecture.

Our commitments to client-first service and responsible community development have been first and foremost since our founding in 1989. With awards for adaptive re-use, commercial and institutional/educational projects, HSA enjoys building both client relationships and projects that reflect our philosophy of socially and environmentally appropriate architecture. Most recently, the studio received 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Design Bronze Award and McGraw Hill Mid-Atlantic Construction’s Best of 2005 Adaptive Re-Use Merit Award for the transformation of the old Inquirer printing facility at 440 North Broad Street for the School District of Philadelphia’s administration headquarters. HSA’s environmentally sustainable designs, such as the green-design techniques used in both Easttown and New Garden Townships’ municipal facilities and the rehabilitation of the Ambler Boiler House as part of a TOD development, exemplify our standards for active participation in our evolving surrounding communities.

Contributions to the community do not only extend to our projects. The firm also has a long history of personal and professional commitments to community service and higher education. Shiles, Colesberry and Heckendorn all have served on their local township’s planning commissions and have been actively involved in not-for-profit organizations. Hooper’s legacy of service to his township and school district is still highly regarded. HSA’s partnership with higher education institutions has not only provided hands-on education and the promotion of architecture’s next generation, but has inspired the firm’s design practices. Four of the thirteen studio members are currently students of Drexel University’s architecture program, receiving practical experience and leadership on a wide variety of project types, sizes and budgets. Our horizontal hierarchy allows for all individuals to reach their fullest potential within the structure of the firm. Heckendorn is an example of HSA’s successful partnership with Drexel, beginning his career at the firm as a student and rising to become senior associate. In addition, Shiles, Heckendorn, and Colesberry also volunteer their time and experience to their alma maters through jury participation and mentorship.

During the 18 years that HSA has created architectural solutions, the landscape of the profession, its programs and contextual environments have developed into more complex, more challenging possibilities. Our design solutions have evolved to create spirited architecture that reflects the defining circumstances of the time. We understand that appropriate architecture is responsive to the enjoyment of place, either man-made or natural, the sensitive qualities of materials, and the ability to give pleasure and comfort. At Hooper Shiles Architects, no project under our design is too small or too large for the same thoughtful, inventive process that has become synonymous with our firm. We strive to create value for the institutions and individuals that trust us with their projects, ensuring that it is never a dull day at the office.

Anthony Bracali AIA Honored Named 2006 Young Architect

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

Choosing the 2 + 4 Option at Drexel University, Bracali knew that he wanted to work right away and not just sit in lecture halls. The program allows students to partake in an intense two years of study and then start full-time employment. Paul M. Hirshorn, AIA, Head of the Department of Architecture at Drexel University says, "It has been a pleasure indeed to watch Tony Bracali’s development closely since he came to Drexel just 13 years ago as a very talented student in Drexel’s selective accelerated 2 + 4 Option in Architecture. His career as a student, practitioner, teacher, and community activist has been meteoric, making him not only a poster child for Drexel’s accelerated approach to architecture education, but also one of the youngest architects to be nominated for this award. Bracali’s combination of skill, energy, and positive attitude is unbeatable, and his growth as a professional has been quick and impressive as a result." While at Drexel Bracali worked at The Architectural Studio, and Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates before graduating Cum Laude in 1999. From there he worked at Nalls Architecture and Ewing Cole Cherry Brott before finally deciding to open his own firm, Anthony Bracali Architecture or AB Arch.

Bracali always felt a strong interest in the business aspect of architecture and he felt that his varied firm experience helped him understand how to sell the architecture he was designing. When asked about the future of AB Arch, Bracali says he hopes the firm will grow to around 40 people. He feels this is a manageable range and wants to keep a practice that has a "design focus and clients who want more than just a design solution."

Since the beginning of AB Arch in 2002, Bracali has been working hard on many projects. Most notably is the Schuylkill River Skatepark (SRSP), which, when built, will be situated near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. "The design explores the relationship of skateboarding to public space and integrates it with the larger recreational fabric," says Bracali. Not only has this project has been recognized in Dwell magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The City Paper and the Philadelphia Business Journal, but also the skatepark received a Citation of Merit from AIA Pennsylvania. The jury of architects who chose the 2006 Design Award winners remarked that the Skatepark "accommodates many users and many activities and acknowledges skateboarding as a positive contributor and involved an exemplary process to create a new paradigm."

Aside from the SRSP, Bracali is working on a pro-bono basis for the Tioga United Community group to help initiate redevelopment in their neighborhood by preparing a conceptual design for a four-acre urban park. AB Arch has also been involved with renovations and additions to the Philadelphia Montessori Charter School. Board Secretary for the Philadelphia Montessori Charter School Colleen L. Mele says, "Tony had proven to be a creative problem solver, sensitive to the needs of the client and is inspired to provide for us a special place for learning."

Apart from juggling several other projects, Bracali has also done a lot to give back to the architecture community. He has served on the Board of Directors for AIA Philadelphia, The Charter High School for Architecture + Design (CHAD), the DOO-WOP Preservation League, and the Allen High Engineering Academy. Bracali has also taught as a adjunct professor at Drexel University, Community College of Philadelphia and Philadelphia University.

It seems with the momentum Bracali has behind him, AB Arch will have much success in the near future and will certainly be able to reach their goal of "providing innovative design solutions which address client needs and respond to specific design opportunities developed for each project."

Architects, engineers and urban planners participated in a dynamic environmentally-oriented site visit and design charette organized by Wallace Roberts & Todd and the Delaware Valley Green Building Council at this year's conference. Participants learned how an inter-disciplinary design team can create preliminary ideas towards the realization of sustainable communities.

"Optimizing Green Design through an Interdisciplinary Approach to Site Planning" explored an urban riverside community, Forgotten Bottom, located along the southeast bank of the Schuylkill River. Teams explored a myriad of issues, including environmental preservation, neighborhood integration, economics, transportation, and various ideas for creating a destination. In a future, issue, The Philadelphia Architect will report on results considered by the client, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation.

Sublime Aura: Jury Selects Winner of Artemide Design Competition

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

Jurors of the window design competition met November 30 to name the designer of a new display to be constructed in the Artemide showroom in Philadelphia. For the competition, designers were required to use at least one fixture from those offered by Artemide and were given the concept "sublime auras" as a starting point.

Organized by AIA Philadelphia’s Associate Commttee as a part of its ongoing initiative to support the emerging professional, this is the second year the event will be held. The success of last year’s Artemide competition inspired not only another run this year, but the intention to move the event to a national level.

The jury was presented with a wide array of ideas. Designs varied from quiet forms gently capturing the curiosity of a passer-by to interactive lightscapes inviting observers to become part of the display. Deliberation also included construction and budget, which were factors that entrants were required to consider.

Ryan Drummond was declared the winner, chosen because it carries a strong underlying concept with relevant precedents, a creative use of light fixture, and an exceptional effect for the window of the showroom. Logistically, the project is highly constructible and involves a minimal budget. The jury was especially impressed with the varied use of light and the projects proportional and functional relationship to the window and the site. "The aperture of the window mediates between the passer-by at street level and the experience of display within, by manifesting light as sublime material and material as intangible light."

AThe very close runner-up was a project by Mario Gentile and Joshua Otto. The project was admired for its aesthetics; a vision of filtered light spilling over the soft forms surrounding the light sources. "The veiled readings of the dimensional qualities of lighting set fourth by this design exude a sublimely dynamic perception of differing forms of light seen from varying distances.”
An honorable mention goes out to Brian Leahy and Seth Trance, whom submitted a project intriguing for its adaptability and interactivity. The proposed display functioned to define spaces to view fixture and experience lighting effects while inside the showroom and the exhibit. The same pieces function as stage objects to create a display to be seen from the street.

Ryan Drummond’s project will be constructed by Moore Construction and featured in the Artemide open house on February 7.

February: Meet student(s) at Penn’s Landing to identify problems and solutions.

Early March: Meet student(s) at their school to help them solidify ideas. They must submit a 30 by 30-inch foam core board by March 30.

Halloween was so Spooktacular

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

The third annual Halloween Spooktacular proved to be a wonderful and rewarding occasion for local architects and designers, Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD) students, and the children and staff of the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CcTC).

Design Charrette
The two-part event began with a design charrette hosted by CHAD. Professionals and students teamed up to design and build facades which would later be used in "Spooky Hallow" at CcTC. With a turnout of almost 90 volunteers, creative facades were built with materials donated from P. Agnes and J&F Commercial Products. Facades ranging from a "Spooky Zoo" to a "Ghost Train" ensured that Spooky Hallow would be eventful at every turn. Manna and Mediterranean Catering supplied delicious treats that kept stomachs full and the DJ from Magical Sight and Sound made certain everyone stayed upbeat.

Part Boo! – Spooktacular
Children and their families from the Therapeutic Nursery School participated in face painting, t-shirt coloring, and of course, trick-or-treating through Spooky Hallow. The children enjoyed goodie bags filled with toys (and decorated by the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society). A home cooked breakfast sponsored by Global Furniture, a fun lunch, water ice donated by Rita’s, and a magic show complete with bunny rabbits and doves rounded out the fun-filled afternoon. This event provided a positive experience for the CcTC kids and their families, and a memory to treasure for the children, families, staff and volunteers.

The children voted for their favorite façade and chose "Mexican Day of the Dead" created by a team from KieranTimberlake Associates: Seth Trance, Alex Gauzza, Shawn Protz, Ruth Benjamin and Casey Boss; and assisted by the Keyla Rosado, a talented CHAD student. Congratulations to the team.

Robert Keppel, AIA, AICP became Chapter President at the Board Induction Ceremony January 18. To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the AIA, the Chapter celebrated the contributions of Thomas U. Walter, a founder of the national Institute and the local Chapter. Attendees received a complimentary copy of "Thomas U. Walter: The Lectures on Architecture, 1843-1851". The Athenaeum of Philadelphia provided an ideal location for the event, as attendees enjoyed a lecture about Walter and the founding of the AIA, and Bruce Laverty, architectural curator at the Athenaeum, led a tour through the gallery exhibit, "Thomas U. Walter and the Design of the United States Captiol." The exhibition, which runs through March 16, includes 50 original drawings and contemporary photographs depicting the monumental project that would define his career and become a symbol of the nation. Susan Maxman, FAIA received the inaugural Thomas U. Walter Award for service to the profession.

Chapter Leaders Bring AIA Agenda to Capitol Hill

AIA Philadelphia and AIA PA leadership took to the Hill last week as part of AIA's Grassroots Leadership Conference. Our representatives met with Members of Congress, advocating for the AIA’s legislative agenda, including: government building energy efficiency, sustainable design and water quality, and the energy efficient commercial buildings tax deduction.

The local contingent met with Rep. Allyson Schwartz (pictured), who has introduced H.R. 539, Buildings for the 21st Century Act, which both extends and enlarges the deduction. The AIA believes Congress should increase the size of the deduction as this will provide greater incentives to construct energy efficient buildings and install energy efficient systems. Current law allows for a deduction of $1.80 per square foot for meeting certain energy savings requirements. The AIA strongly urges Congress to increase the size of the deduction to at least $2.25 per square foot.

AIA Educates Public on How Design Works

Architects are among the most respected professionals in the country, according to surveys, yet what exactly they do is less understood. To help educate both the public and current and future clients, the AIA launched "How Design Works for You" last month, two interactive case histories on the Web.

Thes stories take users through a residential and a school project, both with sustainability at their cores, via conversations between the clients and the architects. In a five step process, the user goes from origination to occupancy, hearing the thinking, seeing models and plans, and touring the outcomes.

Members are encouraged to incorporate links to the sites on their own Web sites to help jumpstart conversations with prospective clients.
DesignPhiladelphia Returns April 12-22

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

Inaugurated in Spring 2005, DesignPhiladelphia returns on April 12 through April 22, 2007 to celebrate its third year. This citywide cultural initiative recognizes this region’s distinguished design history and celebrates its contemporary significance as a center for the advancement in the design disciplines. For ten days, the city of Philadelphia will become an arena of design with over 50 events, including: exhibitions, lectures, gallery tours, book signings, studio tours, parties and workshops all taking place under the DesignPhiladelphia banner.

This year, an unprecedented number of architecture firms are offering hard-hat and open studio tours. Visit open studios of Voith & MacTavish Architects, Qb3, Agoos/Lovera Architects, Brett Webber Architects, MA&D, and Hillier Architecture. Jon Wagner will lead a restaurant tour of Mexican Post and KieranTimberlake Associates will provide a hard hat tour of the Suzanne Roberts (Plays & Players) Theatre at Symphony House.

On April 12, DesignPhiladelphia kicks-off with a symposium, "The Grid", inspired by Philadelphia’s iconic city grid. Whether it’s the rectilinear geometry of architecture and landscape architecture, the modernist page layout of graphic design, or the warp and weft of the loom in fashion, the grid is a dominant and controversial structuring principle across multiple design disciplines. In what ways does the grid constrict creativity, limit the imagination or allow it to flourish? Chris Satullo, Philadelphia Inquirer’s Editorial Page Editor will pose myriad questions to a multi-disciplinary panel.

The 2007 Exhibition "Reinvention: circles, squares, and the city grid" unites seven Philadelphia college-level design schools to examine the differing ways these forms create the city, organize our daily life, shape our everyday objects, and enliven our field of vision.

DesignPhiladelphia 2007 features more than 50 additional city wide exhibitions, lectures, lectures, and book signings at cultural and academic institutions, galleries and boutiques.

Lead sponsors are The Design Center at Philadelphia University and the William Penn Foundation. DesignPhiladelphia is directed by AIA Philadelphia board member Hilary Jay (Director, The Design Center at Philadelphia University) and Jamer Hunt (Director, Graduate Program in Industrial Design, The University of the Arts).

See www.designphiladelphia.org for up-to-date event information. Photo: Open Studio at advertising agency Red Tettemer.

Wednesday, March 21, 2007, the Charter High School for Architecture + Design hosted Marshall Purnell, FAIA, the first African-American elected to be president and lead the 80,000 members of AIA (2008). Purnell, design principal of Devrouax + Purnell Architects and Planners in Washington, D.C., was in Philadelphia to participate in the AIA Philadelphia Annual Meeting and speak about the state of the Institute.

Peter Kountz, Head of School, said "Mr. Purnell honors both CHAD and the school's founders from AIA-Philadelphia. The gift of The Charter High School for Architecture + Design and its unique place in the Philadelphia design community comes from the generosity and support of AIA Philadelphia."

Purnell visited with students engaged in a myriad of design-related instruction. "The CHAD community will benefit in un-told ways and we are so fortunate for Mr. Purnell's visit here. He is a demonstrated leader who is about to take on the challenge of leading the AIA's national organization. Mr. Purnell embodies all that we aspire for our students to achieve. He is their example," says Anthony Bracali, president of CHAD’s Board of Trustees and principal of Anthony Bracali Architecture.

The Philadelphia BEC is an interdisciplinary forum, at the local level, with architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, contractors, educators, etc. interest in the enclosure (envelope) of buildings (all buildings) and the related building science.

In order for this forum to be a viable resource for our community the Council is seeking individuals interested in being part of the leadership team (the leadership team is composed of a chair, vice-chair, secretary, and programs director).

In order to initiate and promote cross-disciplinary and cross-responsibility dialogue, laterally among professions, and vertically among designers, consultants, educators, manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, constructors, building operators, developers, etc., the Philadelphia BEC intends to provide the Philadelphia community with monthly programs related to the building enclosure. These programs will tentatively be held directly following the monthly 1/2 hour BEC meeting and last for approximately 1 hour.

In order to provide this valuable resource to our community, we need a committed leadership core.

If you have any suggestions for seminar topics or would like to volunteer with the Building Enclosure Council, please email Mark Magrino, AIA (mmagrino@tbsservices.com) or Frank Russo, AIA (russo@spg3.com) and let us know!

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

Photo: Janice Woodcock AIA, executive director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission, presents the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Street to AIA National President-Elect Marshall Purnell FAIA (left) and AIA Philadelphia President Robert Keppel AIA (right) at AIA Philadelphia’s Annual Meeting.

The City of Philadelphia Procalmation Reads:

Through their work, American architects have expressed the richness of our nation’s heritage and the vitality of its spirit. They have combined advances in building technology with design innovation to enliven our cities and communities and improve our citizen’s quality of life.

The architecture profession in Philadelphia, with the support of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, has been especially vigilant in its stewardship of many of our great architectural and historic treasures.

The 1,400 member architects and 300 member architecture firms in Greater Philadelphia are recognized for their contributions of building healthy, safe and sustainable communities in our city and throughout the world, enriching the lives of people in every walk of life.

As the American Institute of Architects marks its 150th anniversary, our region salutes its 77,000members, as well as the 281,000 Americans who work in architecture firms, for their many solid contributions to our nation.

THEREFORE…
I, John F. Street, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, do hereby proclaim April 9-14, 2007, as ARCHITECTURE WEEK in our city, and I urge all citizens to recognize and herald the valuable contributions of our nation’s architects and the important role of the American Institute of Architects on its 150th anniversary.

John F. Street, Mayor

Given under my hand and the Seal of the Great City of Philadelphia this ninth day of April, two thousand and seven.

New Book Celebrates City Planning in Philadelphia

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

The Planning of Center City Philadelphia: From William Penn to the Present, by John Andrew Gallery, traces three centuries of planning history, from Penn's original concept to the design of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway--one of the significant monuments of the City Beautiful movement in the United States--to the mid-20th century urban renewal efforts that made Philadelphia a national leader in city planning and urban revitalization.

Published by the Center for Architecture as Philadelphia greets 6,000 attendees of the American Planning Conference, the guide includes five walking tours of Center City, where the results of this planning history can be seen and experienced most easily.

Richly illustrated with historic maps and photographs, the book also includes brief biographical sketches of nine Philadelphians who have contributed significantly to the practice of planning, including Paul Philippe Cret, Edmund Bacon, David Wallace and Denise Scott Brown.

The publication is made possible by grants from the William Penn Foundation and the Center City District, with additional support from Citizens Bank. It is available at the AIA Bookstore and Design Center for $17.95 (AIA members receive an additional 20 percent discount).

A Special Request from CHAD

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-news"><legend>News</legend>

Body:

CHAD has begun an effort to build an in-house Lending Library with an emphasis on Literature (fiction, poetry, drama and criticism); physical and biological science (general, biology, chemistry, physics and technology); social science (sociology, anthropology, history, economics and psychology); Mathematics; and Fine Arts.

CHAD would also like to build a collection of children's books with the hope that CHAD students might want to read aloud to their younger siblings. The In-House Lending Library would operate very simply: anyone in the CHAD community could take a book off the shelf, read it, and either keep it or return it to the shelves for others to read. For the near future, we will not include the Bacon Library collection as part of the "Lending Library."
All of us at CHAD would be very grateful if AIA-Philadelphia members would consider contributing books to the In-House Lending Library.

Books could be dropped off at the school; picked up at people's office(s) by someone from CHAD; or, if the number of books to be donated is very large, the books could be picked up at a member's home.

CHAD extends a special thank you to Denise Scott Brown for her encouragement with this important project.
