The outspoken blogger and ophthalmologist has been detained a number of times in the past two years for writing critically about Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and the regime's policies.

<p>LONDON (AlertNet) - Climate change impacts - from worsening droughts to new pots of climate-related cash for fragile states - may turn out to be a catalyst for worsening conflict. If so, keeping an eye on local politics and the quality of governance could be as important in heading off climate crises as breeding drought-resistant crops or protecting forests, climate security experts said at a recent meeting in London.</p>

Stanley wouldnt have made it out from the rubble if a family friend hadnt seen him stuck, pulled him out, and carried him to his mother.  Stanleys mother was relieved to find her son, but his leg was fractured and his hand totally crushed, and they couldnt find a hospital that wasnt overflowing with people to get the medical care he needed.  Finally they decided to board a bus for Jiman&iacute;, a Dominican town on the Haitian border, where they had heard medical care was available. (...)</p>

<p>This report from the UN Joint Inspection United describes the Secretary-General's procedure for hiring senior managers, and it touches on the non-transparent hiring process in which gender and geography is 'considered'. The report recommends a better way for Member States to obtain clear information about the Secretary-General's selection process. But UN reports use vague and conflated language, making change slow. While the JIU recommendations are important, it remains to be seen whether the General Assembly will act upon them, and whether formal rules can improve a highly political selection process dominated by the most powerful countries.           <div class="field-item even"><p>Matadi, 31 January 2012 - The work plan midterm review of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) Civil Affairs Office was conducted from 29 to 31 January 2012 at the Ledya hotel in Matadi, capital of Bas-Congo Province. According to the Chief Civil Affairs Richard Snellen, the objective of this three-day workshop was 'to build the capacity of our teams to better work with our partners, including the local Government and the civil society, and also promote discussion among these two partners'.</p>

          <div class="field-item even"><p>Mbuji-Mayi, 29 January 2012 - The Office of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in Mbuji-Mayi inaugurated a new building for the Prosecutor's Office and the High Court of Tshilenge on Friday, 27 January 2012. The ceremony took place in the presence of Kasai Oriental provincial authorities, who were the recipients of the new facility.</p>

<p>This courthouse comes as a solution to the lack of infrastructure in this province, resulting in prejudice to the administration of justice in the Prosecutor's Office. In the past, the Prosecutor's Office and the High Court of Tshilenge were working in rented facilities for a monthly cost of 500 US dollars. (...)</p></div></div></div>

<p>"Twelve people have died from the cold in the last three days, 55 people have been evacuated and 172 accidents have been reported," the OKW emergencies authority said in a statement.</p>

<p>Wreikat told the state-run Petra news agency that the patients were being treated in hospitals in northern, central and southern Jordan, as well as in the capital Amman.</p>

<p>The census, which began last week with funding from the United States administration, will provide more accurate data on the number of refugees in the Caribbean nation and will record basic information such as age, gender, nationality, place of current residence, and family details.</p>

<p>Above his tattered, second-hand sofa, the flag of an ethnic Karen separatist movement hung as a potent reminder of the long journey that brought him to the United States after years stuck in the Umpium Mai refugee camp on Thailand's border with Myanmar.</p>

<p>"We are lucky to be here, but it's not easy," said the 42-year-old Karen, who was a university student when he fled a crackdown on pro-democracy protests by the Myanmar authorities in 1988, living in jungle settlements before making his way to Thailand. (...)</p></div></div></div>

Le nombre des malades ne fait qu'augmenter, selon les sources medicales a Moanda.</p>

<p>Depuis que le premier cas de diarrhee colerique a ete confirme a Moanda, le 24 janvier 2012, jusqu'a ce dimanche 5 fevrier, l'hopital general de Moanda a enregistre cinquante cas, qui ont ete pris en charge. A l'hopital militaire de Kitona, deux cas ont ete signales, dont un deces. (...)</p></div></div></div>
