NIH Scientists Discover How HIV Kills Immune Cells

New research by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, reveals how HIV triggers a signal telling an infected immune cell to die. This finding has implications for preserving the immune systems of HIV-infected individuals.

HIV Testing in HRSA-Funded Health Center Sites

Since 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended routine HIV testing-i.e., that patients be tested as a routine part of care and be told they will be tested unless they decline. This approach aims to expand testing to a wider patient population and increase testing rates.

Statement from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on World AIDS Day

On December 1, World AIDS Day, we remember those we have lost, but also celebrate the remarkable progress made in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. When the first World AIDS Day was observed in 1988, we could not imagine the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. For those diagnosed with HIV infection, the future was bleak.

Statement by the President on National HIV Testing Day

National HIV Testing Day highlights the importance of HIV testing and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Of the over 1.1 million Americans living with HIV, more than 200,000 are unaware of their infection, and may unknowingly be transmitting the virus to others. Knowing your HIV status is a vital step toward accessing life-extending treatment for HIV, and thanks to ongoing research, that treatment is more effective than ever.

CDC Letter on Hepatitis Testing Day & Hepatitis Awareness Month

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, and May 19th will be recognized as the first ever Hepatitis Testing Day in the United States. During May, CDC and its public health partners will work to raise awareness of viral hepatitis and encourage testing for those who may be chronically infected. Viral hepatitis is a silent epidemic in the United States because more than 4 million Americans are living with chronic hepatitis B or chronic hepatitis C, and up to 75% don't know they are infected.

2012 HVAD press statement from Dr. Fauci, M.D., Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH

There is a growing consensus that we can significantly curtail the HIV/AIDS pandemic by implementing scientifically proven HIV prevention strategies, such as voluntary medically supervised adult male circumcision, prevention of mother-to-child transmission and treatment as prevention. With 2.7 million new HIV infections in 2010 alone, however, it is likely that controlling and ultimately ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic will require an effective vaccine as well. This past year, there have been a number of encouraging findings on this front.

NIH Statement on World AIDS Day 2011

This year, we commemorate World AIDS Day during the 30th year since the first reported cases of AIDS, a milestone that has led many to reflect on how far we have come since those dark days when HIV infection was almost always fatal. Remarkably, three decades of scientific progress in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment have brought us to a time when we can begin to imagine an AIDS-free generation.

NIH modifies 'VOICE' HIV prevention study in women

An independent data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) recommended that the Vaginal and Oral Interventions to Control the Epidemic (VOICE) study discontinue evaluating tenofovir tablets because the study will be unable to show a difference in effect between tenofovir tablets and placebo tablets. The DSMB found no safety concerns with oral tenofovir, which is currently used to treat HIV, or with the other products that will continue to be investigated as the VOICE study proceeds.
