The End of an Era

The time has come to say goodbye.

I had thought about posting this last year. However, 2020 was a tough enough year without me announcing that The Adventures in Odyssey Blog was being put out to pasture.

I am getting ready to graduate from college soon. I am looking to do things like this blog, but as a career. My life has gotten busier and busier. As I branch out doing new thing, the AIO Blog has been neglected.

I ended the AIO Blogcast at a time I felt that I would soon have little to no time for it. I really don't like to see blogs, podcasts, and stuff like that just fade away. I would much rather have a proper send-off. That's what I'm doing with this blog post.

Today is the 13th anniversary of this blog being started. The first post was about The Truth Chronicles album. This final post is the 679th post on this website.

There are many other things I wanted to do on this site (Sibling Spies 2 being one of them) but never got around to completing. Even though I will no longer be posting new content here, this website will continue to stay online, along with all of the social media pages. I will still work on some other AIO projects through my previously mentioned project.

I have had so many good things happen because of this place. I have made many friends with fellow fans and the people that make Odyssey. Those are relationships that probably would have never happened without the AIO Blog. I have been able to hone my God-given abilities in so many ways. I also had a wonderful time with my sister Tasha recording our podcast.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has made this dream a reality. I treasure the time that I have had writing and sharing my love of AIO with the best fanbase of any series out there. Thank you to all that commented, subscribed, shared, and interacted with this site in any way! Your involvement made this site not just another AIO blog.

To those that are still blogging about Odyssey or about to, enjoy it! Do your best with it. People will recognize when you are passionate about what you write.

I hope everyone that's reading this will understand that the reason why this site has flourished is because of Who made Adventures in Odyssey itself happen. God has made AIO not just a good source of clean entertainment, but a source of teaching and encouragement. He has been the Unseen One that has used this site to encourage me and teach me so many things. For that, I am grateful.

Thank you, dear readers, for joining me on this long and eventful journey…this odyssey.

Top 10 Best Episodes from the 2010s

The decade of the 2010s was quite a memorable one. It also brought with it over 220 episodes of our favorite audio drama, Adventures in Odyssey. There were some bad, good, and great episodes throughout those years. Of course, that is the case of all three decades of AIO.

As 2020 is drawing to a close, I would like to look back at what I consider to be the 10 best episodes to come out during 2010-2019. This list covers episodes from the mainstream albums and the Adventures in Odyssey Club albums.

10.

The Lone Lawman

This fun little episode from the AIO Club’s first season is one that is usually overlooked but deserves more attention. It is yet another Western on Kids Radio with a little different twist. The episode goes back and forth from the script being performed by the characters to them talking to each other in between takes.

This stands out as one of the funniest episodes of Odyssey since the hiatus. It is somewhat of a spoof on the Old Time Radio show The Lone Ranger. That humor ranges from characters breaking the fourth wall and calling out tropes in audio drama. It definitely harkens back to the classic episodes of The Big Broadcast and Over the Airwaves.

A Thankstaking Story

This was also AIO’s first Thanksgiving special in over a decade. It also showed how Odyssey could take a well-known Christmas story and turn it into a Thanksgiving one. The team did this back in 1991 with A Thanksgiving Carol. The AIO team had done Christmas musicals in the past, but this was a first for Thanksgiving.

It showcased the talent of veteran voices like Katie Leigh and Will Ryan, but also let newer talent like Andre Stojka and Jim Ward show off their skills. And don’t forget the songs! After hearing this episode, you would more than likely have one or two of the catchy tunes stuck in your head.

Green Ring Conspiracy, Parts 1-12

This 12 parter has been compared (and contrasted) to the Novacom Saga several times. The aforementioned saga brought back old fans to the show during the split episode era. The Green Ring Conspiracy did much the same to draw back some disillusioned fans who had not felt too good about the new episodes after the hiatus. To this day, many fans pick this album as one of their favorites.

This story arc introduced new characters like Buck Oliver and Penny Wise. It also brought back fan favorite Jason Whittaker and Whit’s grandson Monty. When people talk about Paul McCusker’s best work, you’re likely to hear the GRC among the titles.

The Jubilee Singers, Parts 1-3

Adventures in Odyssey returned to the airwaves after its 2 year hiatus in 2010. The majority of the first new album after that was filled with introductions of new characters. In the middle of the growing pains, this 3 parter is one that many fans agree was the best of Album 51.

Listeners were made aware of a piece of history that is relatively unknown to most and hear some incredible singing. The Jubilee Singers were Dave Arnold’s first scripts to write by himself for AIO and stands out as some of his best work.

Charlotte

This episode answered the age-old question “Where is Whit’s sister?” She was only briefly mentioned in My Brother’s Keeper. That episode was originally a Family Portraits episode that was later labeled as an AIO one.

This episode gave us more info about Whit’s past and his relationship with his stepsister and brother-in-law. It allowed Andre Stojka to have a story to show off his acting abilities in a serious role that previous actors for Whit had (i.e. Recollections and Clara). This episode also did much to make newcomer Wilson Knox more endearing to listeners.

Have a Heart

Although Buddy Norman has been a polarizing character for some people, this may be considered his best episode. The daydreaming and fantasy scenes are humorous as he tries to comprehend how a person would be with a new, physical heart. What really stands out is the latter half of the episode.

This episode was written by Marshal Younger and fans may have some flashbacks to another one of his scripts, A Lesson From Mike. The last scene of the episode may be one of the most emotional scenes in the history of the show. The acting, music, and writing all come together to make a moment that listeners will never forget.

The Ties That Bind, Parts 1-14

After the success of the first 12 part episode, AIO followed it five albums later with the show’s first 14 parter. It dealt with several contemporary issues in a way that was accessible to kids.

Although a few new characters were introduced, this story arc involved several well-established characters and focused on developing them more. It brought Buck and Jules back to the show and saw longtime character Wooton Bassett propose to Penny Wise.

One More Name, Parts 1-3

AIO has had several World War II stories in the past with most of them being historical fiction ones. This amazing 3 parter told the story of an amazing woman, Irena Sendler, who saved over 1,000 Jewish children. Kathy Buchanan weaves Sendler’s story together in a way that will leave you with appreciation in your heart and tears in your eyes.

The episodes got pretty intense at times. Not surprisingly, they came with a parental warning on them. As most fans agree, if an episode has one, it’s going to be great!

Life Expectancy, Parts 1-3

These episodes stand out as a significant point in the history of Odyssey. After a long time of not being heard on the show, Connie Kendall’s mom, June Kendall, died. It also introduced Connie’s half-sister Jules. This story also harkened back to past emotional episodes like Where is Thy Sting?.

This 3 parter shines because of Paul McCusker’s writing and Katie Leigh’s acting. Episodes like these are the ones that are long remembered and cherished when us fans have to deal with similar situations in real life.

The Toy

The story sounds like it will be a typical mystery when it begins. As time progresses, it is shown to be much more than that. It’s a mystery that invokes similar emotions to that of Buried Sin and Karen. The introduction of the character of Luella (played by Della Saba) was a sweet and memorable part of the show.

The Toy ends with a great plot twist and a great message. It also helps humanize the mostly comedic character of Detective Don Polehaus. This may be one of the best, if not the best, episode Phil Lollar has written since his return to the show.

These are just a handful of episodes that I think will be considered classics someday. Even though I love to look back at past episodes, I’m excited to see what new episodes we’ll get to hear in the next decade!

The AIO Wiki Podcast Ends Over 3 Year Run

After over 3 years, the AIO Wiki Podcast is saying farewell. Podcast hosts Lee and Arista released their final episode on November 22nd of this year. Their 30th and last episode contains reflections on past experiences, the origins of the show, and a goodbye message to their listeners. You can listen to this episode and their entire backlog on the AIO Wiki.

The two hosts, along with several guests, have conducted several reviews, interviews, and news recaps over the years. Their commitment to quality and the podcast's long-time presence will be missed in the AIO fan community.

AIO Wins at ATC Seneca Awards

On Friday, July 24th, 2020, Audio Theatre Central hosted the 3rd annual Seneca Awards. It's an awards show that recognizes the best aspects of family-friendly audio drama. Adventures in Odyssey was nominated in several categories. That night, AIO won two awards, including:

A Sacrificial Escape

AIO Gets Seneca Award Nominations

It's been around 12 years since the official Adventures in Odyssey website has had a new look. Times are changing as the team at Focus on the Family has finally redesigned the online home for AIO. The design launched last week. It not only has a new look, it has a new URL. WhitsEnd.org now redirects to AdventuresInOdyssey.com.

The new site is now mobile friendly and gives listeners new to the show an easy way to find out more about Odyssey and it's characters, history, and merchandise.

What We Know About Album 69

Summary:

Two New AIO Fan Podcasts

With many people stuck inside and needing something to keep them occupied, two new Adventures in Odyssey fan podcasts have launched which could help alleviate the boredom.

Odyssey Moments is a Facebook/Instagram page that share memes, fan artwork, and other fun content for AIO fans. Recently, the creator of Odyssey Moments, Rose, started a podcast for her brand. It's called the Odyssey Moments Podcast.

An "Adventures in Odyssey" fan podcast hosted and created by Rose with the intent to feature interviews from other creative AIO fans! Along with a variety of other Odyssey shenanigans!

The first episode has Rose answering questions she received about her AIO fandom and history with the show. She also talks about what some of the future episodes of the podcast will be like. The podcast is available on Anchor and other podcast platforms.

You may remember a YouTube channel that yours truly started a few years ago called Odyssey Geek. That project was eventually put away, but now it has been redeveloped into an audio podcast, also called Odyssey Geek.

Join a veteran Adventures in Odyssey fan as he discusses all aspects of the popular audio drama series. Listen in to hear reviews, live commentaries, lists, and more covering all aspects of the show in a unique way.

The first episode is a review of the first two episodes of Season 7 of the AIO Club, Unsinkable, Parts 1 & 2. The podcast is also on Anchor and other podcast platforms.

New Compilation Album - Jones and Parker Detective Agency

Emily Jones and Matthew Parker are characters that have been around on the show since 2010. Since then, the two of them have been featured in mystery stories as part of The Jones and Parker Detective Agency

They are compilations of clips from different forms of media stitched together to try to get the viewer to laugh. We decided AIO deserved some attention so we created our own compilation of quirky quotes and silly scenes from the show.

Official Podcast 345: FREE Episode "The Sounds of Life"

The Official AIO Podcast has released their annual free episode for its listeners. This time it is a rare audio drama production that was made for the daily Focus on the Family broadcast in 1992.

It's called The Sounds of Life. It is a story based around sounds that follows the life of a boy named David as he grows from a baby to a father.

The podcast also includes an interview with writer Paul McCusker about the making of this show.

He has been working on the show since 1998 and 150+ episodes. In the interview, we ask him questions about how he got started on AIO, his most used sound effect on the show, a memorable experience recording Odyssey, and more!

Farewell, Jim Custer

Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share. Adventures in Odyssey actor Jim Custer has passed away. He died on May 5, 2019. Jim was best known for playing the role of young John Avery Whittaker.

According to AIO Wiki, he has played 17 characters on the show. He also played Pop Fowler in the audio series of the Last Chance Detectives.

Jim Custer first appeared on AIO in the episode Family Vacation, Part 2 as the eccentric Sunday School teacher, Mr. Bostich. His first time to play Whit was in Rescue from Manatugo Point. His last performance on the show was young Whit in Charlotte.

The Official AIO Podcast recently did a tribute episode for Jim Custer. In it, some of the cast and crew (Chuck Bolte, Bob Hoose, and Gary Reed.) reminisce about their working with Jim and share some of the many ways he touched people's lives. Make sure to give it a listen.

The last episode of Album 66: Trial by Fire aired on the radio this weekend. What does that mean? It means that it's time to look ahead at what's coming up next on Adventures in Odyssey!

We already have a wealth of information on Album 67 entitled More Than Meets the Eye. Read on if you want to know even more! Keep in mind that some of the details may change between now and its release.

Summary:
Mystery and intrigue abound as Emily and Matthew are trapped inside an unfinished escape room in the basement of Whit’s End. Meanwhile, the Odyssey High School Football team heads toward the state championship and deals with unexpected challenges.

Emily and Matthew are trapped inside an unfinished escape room in the basement of Whit’s End. A mysterious voice insists that the two of them must play a game called “Search for Your Life” to get out.

Let's Play Odyssey: Sword of the Spirit

It's time for more AIO gaming fun! We have finished up recording the gameplay for the first 2 Adventures in Odyssey computer games: 3D AIO CD-ROM and Treasure of the Incas. Now, we're moving onto the next game called Sword of the Spirit.

In 1881, Peter McAlister discovered an ancient battle sword in a European castle and brought it back to his home town of Odyssey. When his children were older, he created a "Gauntlet of Virtues" to test their character and lead them to the secret treasure. But the night before Peter presented his gift, he died. The McAlister children were never told about the gauntlet so the secret location of the Sword of the Spirit remained an unsolved mystery, until now.

Embark on a mysterious adventure playing the role of Whit, Connie and Eugene in a chase through abandoned mine-shafts and secret passageways in search of the Sword of the Spirit. However, before you uncover the secret hiding place of the sword you must first pass the Gauntlet of Virtues - nine tests of character such as honesty, kindness and love. It's a fast paced flight through dark tunnels, where every passage holds another key to the Sword's real power, and where virtue itself is in the balance.
