This Earth Day, Reconsider Landfilling Food Waste

How To Safely Seal Your EasyPak VaporShield Containers

At Air Cycle, our products and services are designed to make recycling more convenient, safe, and cost-effective for organizations of all sizes. To ensure the safety of all employees and carriers who handle your EasyPak containers from the moment they hold their first fluorescent bulb, to arriving at a certified recycling facility, it is important to follow all of the instructions included on your EasyPak VaporShield Box. That means not only properly assembling the container, but also making sure that the container is properly sealed before shipment.

Share this short video with your team to learn how to easily assemble and pack an EasyPak VaporShield container to ensure safety in handling and delivery.

Need a helpful reminder? Print out these instructions to keep handy while you’re packing fluorescent bulbs for shipment.

When assembling your box for the first time, press the end cap into one end of the center section.
Remove the white strips from the pressure sensitive tape on the first end cap, and press the folds firmly along the sides of the center section.
Seal end cap to container with 3” wide box tape. Seal all edges and corners for shipping. Make several wraps around the intersection of the end cap and center section of the box to create a tight seal. Tape should cover all of the creases created by the end cap.
Press firmly on the tape to ensure that it adheres.
When you begin to fill the box with spent lamps, be sure to write the accumulation start date in the box on the side of the center section.
If the box is not entirely filled, insert the end cap into the open end of the center section without taping. This will keep the box closed when not in use.
When the box is filled with linear fluorescent lamps, press the end cap down onto the center section until the lamps pierce the first layer of cardboard on the end cap, holding the bulbs in place.
Remove the white strips from the pressure sensitive tape located on the underside of the end cap, and press the folds firmly along the sides of the center section.
Repeat steps three and four to the opposite end cap to ensure a secure seal.

University of New Mexico's Recycling Problem

The University of New Mexico is a nationally recognized leader in higher education that prides themselves in their use of sustainable practices to ensure a positive impact on the environment. As part of this commitment, UNM had looked for a safe and economical way to handle fluorescent lamp waste. Since these lamps contain mercury, proper management and disposal is regulated by the EPA, sending spent lamps to a local landfill was not an option.

Managing proper handling and disposal of intact lamps require a large amount of time and storage. Additionally, lamps are made of glass which presents potential breakage during handling and storage. As a large campus, UNM also faced challenges associated with generating lamps of all shapes and sizes along with unexpected costs due to the required recycling of spent fluorescent lamps.

Air Cycle's Simple Sustainable Solution

A few different solutions exist for proper management and handling of lamp waste depending on the size of the college. Facilities over 200,000 sq. ft. highly benefit from using a drum-top lamp crushing system such as the Bulb Eater® 3(BE3). The new design of the system incorporates significantly advanced safety features that provides safeguard for personnel and allows for any type of fluorescent lamps, including straight lamps, U-bends, and CFLs in the same machine.

This solution will save time because it is much more efficient than the time it takes to pack and store the spent lamps collected for proper disposal. It also saves valuable storage space as the drums of crushed bulbs take up far less space than the cartons of lamps required for storing. What previously was stored on a 4’x4’x6’ pallet could now be contained in one 55 gallon drum. The machine also eliminates accidental breakage from storing boxes of lamps and prevents release of mercury vapor into the environment.

Conclusion

UNM was able to take ownership of the universal waste issues in regards to mercury-containing lamps as well as play a significant role in the process of responsible waste disposal through the use of Air Cycle’s BE3 lamp crushing machine. Utilizing Air Cycle’s National network of recycling partners makes recycling the full drum of crushed lamps easy and cost effective.

Do Travelers Care About Staying With Green Hotels?

According to a survey by FORBES MAGAZINE, 62 percent of travelers either always or often consider the environment when choosing a hotel, transportation, or restaurant. The survey also shows that 69 percent say they plan to make even more eco-friendly choices in the next 12 months.

The majority of respondents agreed that hotels could do a better job of publicizing their green initiatives. In fact, most revealed that they rarely or never felt informed about whether hotels are truly eco-friendly. We’d like to believe that hotels practice environmental sustainability for the sake of our environment, but with more heads in beds, who could argue with this survey?

Free Webinar: New OSHA Hazard Communication Standard

Last year, the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) enacted a new Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). According to OSHA, the update to the HCS "provides a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets." The update brings the HCS from a "right to know" into a "right to understand" paradigm and is estimated to affect 40 million US workers.

CFL Premium Bulb Eater® Wins Awards

Air Cycle Corporation is proud to announce that the CFL Premium Bulb Eater® was recently awarded a Building Operating and Management (BOM) Top Products award for 2013. In addition, the machine was recently named the #1 top product requested by readers of American School & University magazine for the second year in a row.

The CFL Premium Bulb Eater® was selected by popular vote as one of 78 BOM Top Products award recipients out of 560 contenders through a national survey of building and facility executives. The survey asked participants to select their choices for top products that meet the criteria of innovation and usefulness to facility managers.

New Pennsylvania E-Waste Law Starts Jan. 24

Beginning January 24, 2013 a new law in Pennsylvania will go into effect that prohibits the disposal of most electronic wastes in landfills through the normal trash system, according to this article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Instead, electronics covered by the law will need to be recycled.

Devices covered by the new law, called the Covered Device Recycling Act, include spent televisions, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, accessories such as printers, and tablet computers such as iPads or Kindles.

At Air Cycle, we're always striving to do our jobs better, and a big part of that is education. It goes back to our Core Value of Expertise, and the importance of gaining knowledge--and sharing it with our customers--in order to help our customers be successful in their sustainability efforts.

We've hosted guest speakers to talk about how lamps are recycled and consultants to teach company-wide classes on recycling regulations. We recently established an in-house library to encourage our team to keep learning and growing professionally, in order to serve our customers better. And I just finished a great book called Think Outside the Inbox.

In the book, David Cummings and Adam Blitzer share many useful insights about marketing, including some advice to focus on delivering substance and value to the customer in marketing communications. And that's really what we're all about at Air Cycle: creating value for our customers throughout their entire experience with us, from the marketing materials they read to the products they use at their facility.

The PalletPak Lamp Recycling Kit enables large-scale lamp recycling (up to 1600 T8 4-foot straight fluorescent lamps) consolidated onto the footprint of a standard 40" x 48" pallet, and includes pickup for recycling within 48 hours.

The Micro Battery Bucket enables facility managers to recycle very small quantities of batteries—10 lbs in a 0.6-gallon container—for low battery waste-producing locations, while the Universal Lamp Recycling Box enables the recycling of any lamp type (2-foot or less) in the same container including straight fluorescent, HID, u-bend, and compact fluorescent.

The CFL Recycling Box replaces the discontinued CFL Recycling Bucket. The box can hold 150 compact fluorescent lamps versus the 90-lamp capacity of the bucket, resulting in a lower recycling cost per lamp.

If you missed it, don't forget to check out our new, innovative VaporShield® lamp recycling box design. We got rid of the liner and box flaps, and added a specially treated cardboard to contain mercury and an interior divider that keeps lamps organized during loading. The boxes are certified UN-compliant per 49 CFR-Packaging Group II and ISTA® Transit Tested Certified, meaning they are safe to use.

If you haven't already seen it, take a minute (or a minute and 16 seconds to be exact!) to check out the video about our new VaporShield® mail-back lamp recycling boxes. Featuring Air Cycle Account Executive Justin Hayes, the video explains a little bit about the usability and safety aspects of the box, and shows it in action.

The new box eliminates the hard-to-use plastic liner that most--if not all--other mail-back boxes require by using a specially treated material for the box tube, which contains mercury vapor in the event of breakage during shipment.

VaporShield® containers also include an interior divider, which adds structural rigidity to the box and allows lamps to be stacked more conveniently. Both of these innovations make the box easier to load, which means users are less likely to break a lamp outside the box while fumbling with liners and box flaps or while attempting to load a lamp in an almost-full container.
