John Tague, president of United, said the carrier got a discount on the price, which is common for jet orders, though he did not specify how much.
“We felt that we had a significant opportunity by timing the order with the backdrop of the current economic environment,” he said.
United has not yet worked out financing for the planes, although Mr. Tague said the manufacturers had agreed to provide loans if needed.
The deal requires United to put up $152 million over the next five years. In October United raised about $424 million in a stock and notes offering, and it has been mortgaging other assets such as spare parts to get it through the drop-off in travel demand brought on by the recession.
United said it had signed letters of intent for both planes. John Leahy, chief operating officer of Airbus, said the company expected a firm order in a month or two. That would bring total orders for the A350 to 530, Mr. Leahy said.
“We’re not surprised by the decision to split the order,” Mr. Leahy said. He said it was noteworthy because it was the first time United has ever ordered wide-body jets not made by Boeing.
Both planes have two aisles and would usually be used on international flights. The 787-8 seats 210 to 250 people. Airbus said the A350 seats 314 in a typical configuration. Both can fly more than 9,000 miles enough to go nonstop from United’s hub in Chicago to Shanghai.
“They give us access to virtually every region in the world from all of our hubs,” Mr. Tague said.
Both planes are made with composites, meant to be lighter and more fuel-efficient than the usual aluminum construction. Neither plane has ever flown. Boeing hopes its 787 will make its first flight by the end of this year, while Airbus is aiming to deliver its first A350 in 2013.
Shares of Boeing fell 16 cents, to $55.66. Shares of United rose 4 cents, to $9.87. Both companies are based in Chicago.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. Rolls is the sole engine supplier for the A350.
Airbus has sold the A350, which is expected to be introduced from 2013, to only one other American carrier, US Airways. Boeing, Airbus’s rival, also benefited from United’s order yesterday as it sold 25 of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft to the carrier.
Rolls and General Electric will compete to provide the engines for United’s 787s in the coming months.
The value of the two aircraft orders is $10 billion, with the larger Airbus aircraft worth about 60 per cent of the total. In addition, United has placed provisional orders for 50 more of both aircraft.
Mark King, president of Roll’s civil aerospace division, said: “This represents a significant endorsement of our Trent XWB technology and its operational advantage. We are delighted that United Airlines has put its trust in the long-term performance advantages of Trent technology.”
United Airlines is America’s third-largest airline but it has struggled financially in recent years and has been unable to buy new, fuel-efficient aircraft. It emerged from four years in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2006 but then was forced to reduce its fleet as the US economy entered recession. It has retired nearly 100 older Boeing 737s and six 747s.
The financial weakness of many North American carriers means that the continent now has an ageing fleet of aircraft. This brings significant costs to the airlines as older aircraft need more maintenance, burn more fuel and emit more carbon dioxide. The new 787 and A350 aircraft are expected to be about 25 per cent more fuel-efficient than existing aircraft.
United’s order for new aircraft is a key boost for Airbus and Boeing in a year in which orders have dried up. Many carriers have been forced to cancel orders or postpone delivery because of the severe downturn in the aviation sector. Boeing, for example, had added only 13 orders for the 787 before the United announcement, but has lost 83 orders.
Michael O’Leary, the chief executive of Ryanair, the budget airline, has continued to apply public pressure on Boeing to conclude a deal for 200 new aircraft. Mr O’Leary said that he might shelve plans to place the $6 billion (£3.7 billion) order because Boeing wanted to change the delivery conditions. “We have effectively almost reached agreement on price for a 200-aircraft order ... but the deal is unlikely to take place because now they want to go back and change delivery conditions,” he said.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. Its landing distance at maximum landing weight is now 2,621 feet --329 feet shorter than the targeted 2,950 feet.
The Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil-based aircraft manufacturer expects the FAA type certificate to be issued in the coming weeks. Embraer's customer support and services structure is prepared for the Phenom 300's entry into service. According to Embraer, the list price of the FAA-certified Phenom 300 will be $8.14 million, under 2010 economic conditions.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. Delivery is expected between 2016 and 2019, around the same time the airline will retire Boeing 747 and 767 aircraft.
At list prices the planes would be worth roughly $10 billion, with about $4 billion for Boeing's 787-8 and about $6 billion for the Airbus plane. United President John Tague said they got a discount, which is common for jet orders.
"We felt that we had a significant opportunity by timing the order with the backdrop of the current economic environment," he said.
United has not yet worked out financing for the planes, although Tague said the manufacturers had agreed to provide loans if needed.
John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer, said the deal is valued at about $6 billion at list prices. He said the deal is a letter-of-intent, which Airbus expects to convert to a firm order in a month or two. Once the order is official it will bring Airbus' total orders for the A350 to 530, Leahy said.
"We're not surprised by the decision to split the order" Leahy said. He said it was noteworthy because it was the first time United has ever ordered non-Boeing wide-body jets.
United, the third-biggest airline in the U.S., said this summer it was seeking dueling proposals from Boeing and Airbus to replace the biggest jets that make up nearly half of its fleet.
The orders come with future rights for 50 of each aircraft, United said.
The airline said the new jets will reduce fuel burn and environmental impact, while expanding service to more international locations.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. But the tally so far this year leaves it closer to the goal than some had predicted.
Airbus also delivered 437 aircraft between January 1 and the end of November, compared with a full-year target of 490 planes.
Deliveries of the A380 superjumbo remain below schedule, however, with no deliveries reported during November and 2009 deliveries still running six short of the full-year goal of 13.
Airbus faces both continued production snags and a difficult climate for customer financing and has said it expects to push "one or two" of the 13 A380 deliveries scheduled for 2009 into the beginning of next year.
Emirates said earlier it would take delivery of two A380s in December.
Airbus earlier this week expressed confidence in the finances and growth plans of Dubai-based Emirates, by far the biggest customer for the world's largest airliner.
In latest available figures, Boeing took orders for 202 new aircraft but airlines cancelled orders for 111 between January 1 and November 24, leaving 91 net sales.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. That was down from USD$226 million a year earlier.
Revenue at Montreal-based Bombardier, founded as a snowmobile manufacturer in 1942, was flat at USD4.6 billion.
"We think that this was a solid quarter for Bombardier in a tough environment," Rama Bondada, an analyst at Macquarie Equities Research, said in a note to clients.
"As we had expected, aero headwinds were offset by gains in transportation, and we think this scenario will likely continue into the near term."
The company delivered 61 aircraft in the quarter, compared to 80 in the same period last year. Revenue at Bombardier Aerospace was down 9 percent at USD$2.06 billion.
Bombardier said the business aircraft market was still experiencing difficulties due to a lack of customer financing, but there were signs of stabilisation. Net orders for business aircraft, the company's most profitable segment, returned to a positive position for the first time in a year.
Bombardier also said AMR Eagle Holding, parent company of American Eagle Airlines, signed a firm order agreement for 22 CRJ700 regional jets. The deal, which is not included in the third-quarter results, is worth USD$779 million.
Last week Bombardier said it was cutting 715 jobs due to a lack of new orders for CRJ jets. The layoffs came on top of 4,360 job cuts earlier in the year as the company cut production.
Bombardier said on Thursday that based on projected sales, the production cuts were still necessary, even with the new CRJ orders.
Bombardier had USD$3 billion in cash at the end of the quarter, compared to USD$3.5 billion at January 31. Its overall backlog was USD$47.4 billion, compared to USD$48.2 billion at January 31.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. The theme was echoed by representatives of Carnegie Mellon's CyLab, MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab and Purdue's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security.
Northrop will deal on a case-by-case basis with each research institute on splitting jointly developed intellectual property, said Brammer.
The group, called the Northrop Grumman Cybersecurity Research Consortium, initially will sponsor 10 projects with an eye to such things as attribution in cyberspace, supply chain risk and securing critical infrastructure networks, the company said.
The group's members will coordinate research projects, swap information and author joint case studies, among other efforts to speed hardware and software solutions into practice, participants said.
The consortium will serve "to help increase our nation's security in cyberspace," Brammer added in a statement. He said in a brief interview he expects some research results as soon as next year.
Northrop's cyber work was in the news recently for a report prepared by the company that implicated the Chinese authorities in extensive cyber activities against the United States.
The report, commissioned by the congressionally chartered U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said Beijing appeared to be conducting "a long-term, sophisticated, computer network exploitation campaign" against the U.S. government and U.S. defense industries.
Brammer told the news conference that identifying a cyber aggressor was "very difficult" with current technology.
Lockheed Martin Corp, the Pentagon's No. 1 supplier by sales, last month announced the formation of a cyber security technology alliance of its own with leading technology providers, including Microsoft Corp, Cisco Systems Inc and Dell Inc.
Boeing Co, the second-biggest Pentagon contractor, also has put together a cyber-security research alliance, headquartered in Washington state, with university and commercial partners, said Barbara Fast, the company's vice president of cyber and information solutions.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. It is the first of nine aircraft that will ultimately be delivered. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.
The delivery also marks the beginning of the first squadron of UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopters that will be operated by an international military organization. The Royal Bahrain Air Force will fly the aircraft for military operations that include protection of sovereign borders as well as protection and defense of U.S. and coalition strategic facilities.
"The Bahrain Air Force is getting a powerful tool in the UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopter," said Doug Shidler, Sikorsky Vice President, U.S. Government Programs. "The sophistication and capabilities of this aircraft will greatly enhance the Bahrain military's ability, and will serve their country well for years to come."
Bahrain officials signed the U.S. Army Letter of Offer and Acceptance on May 7, 2007, to purchase nine UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopters through a Foreign Military Sale (FMS), the first such sale for the UH-60M aircraft.
The aircraft are being completed at Sikorsky's Military Derivatives Completion Center in Horseheads, N.Y. Deliveries are scheduled to continue into 2010.
The UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopter is a twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter designed to a U.S. Army requirement to carry an 11-man squad and four-man crew under combat conditions. Sikorsky Aircraft has been manufacturing the BLACK HAWK helicopter for the U.S. Army since 1978. The UH-60M helicopter is the latest and the most advanced model to be fielded to the U.S. Army.
The UH-60M helicopter provides additional payload and range, improved handling qualities, lower operating costs, and greater survivability than earlier generation BLACK HAWK helicopters. These improvements are achieved with improved engines, revolutionary rotor blade design, improved durability transmission system, advanced digital avionics and an integrated "glass" cockpit.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. The defense and intelligence community contractor will be working on research projects with Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Carnegie Mellon University's Cybersecurity Education and Research Center.
Northrop Grumman's Robert Brammer said his firm is spending "millions of dollars" on the five-year project with the three universities but would not give a specific figure on the company's investment. He said the consortium will combine "outstanding people and the flexibility and visionary style of leading research universities." The initiative, which will likely go beyond the initial five years, will involve 10 projects at the three universities along with complimentary research at Northrop Grumman, Brammer said. Purdue University's Eugene Spafford noted that the projects are aimed at looking ahead to future threats and problems instead of being reactive, which is what usually occurs today, he added.
The specific projects being tackled by the consortium play to each university's strengths. For example, MIT will have three projects including one that aims to make computers better able to identify right and wrong commands so they can identify when they are being asked to perform a malicious function. The three projects at Carnegie Mellon will focus on protection of critical infrastructure. And the four projects being tackled at Purdue will include work on building computer systems that make it easier to identify when a cyber attack has occurred. Brammer said he believes the research will provide his firm with a competitive advantage, but added that any intellectual property that each institution develops on its own will remain theirs while intellectual property developed collaboratively will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. The airplane, ultimately destined for Cargolux, will be painted and begin preparations for flight test.
"It is very rewarding to see this airplane transition to the flight test phase," said Mo Yahyavi, 747 program vice president and general manager. "Our employees, suppliers and customers have put a lot of work into making the 747-8 Freighter a reality."
The 747-8 Freighter is the new high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet and 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared to its predecessor. That translates to four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets.
Boeing has secured 105 orders for the 747-8, 78 of which are orders for the new freighter. Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air all have placed orders for the 747-8 Freighter.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. That is very clear," Defence Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said.
"We have as one of our priorities the acquisition of strategic military air transport capability."
Lockheed Martin, producer of the veteran C-130 airlifter, has predicted extra sales due to three- to four-year delays in the A400M, blamed on engine software problems.
The cancellation comes at a time when EADS is in the final stages of negotiating a rescue package for the 20 billion euro A400M contract it signed wkth a core group of European buyers, some of whom have also threatened to trim or cancel orders.
"Airbus Military is surprised by the South African government's announcement ... and regrets this declaration at a time when the programme is on track for a first flight by end-year," an EADS spokesman said.
Airbus will study the finacial impact, he added.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. Sales to the military market increased 22 percent to $9.2 million.
Analysts on average were expecting earnings of 15 cents a share, before special items, on revenue of $48.2 million according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
About $34.0 million of the aerospace backlog is expected to ship in the fourth quarter of 2009, the company said.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc. Since the program was announced in January, 2007, Airbus has received 67 firm orders from nine airlines for its freighter.
Last week Turkish Airlines announced its commitment to buy two A330-200Fs, though it has not yet placed a firm offer.
A version of the aircraft is also Airbus' contender for the U.S. Air Force's $35 billion contract to build new air refuelers and replace the Air Force's aging fleet of 179 tankers.
Lesieur said that Airbus could locate manufacturing of the A330-200 in Alabama if it wins the contract. Airbus is competing with Chicago-based Boeing for the order.
Airbus and its partner Northrop Grumman Corp. are offering a tanker based on the Airbus A330. Boeing may offer tankers based on its 767 or 777 jets or both.
Airbus is a a unit of European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co.
AirGuide and AirGuideBusiness
ISSN 1939-666X - Copyright © 2009 AirGuide / Pyramid Media Group, Inc.
