Most airlines offer elite status for their most valued fliers
in order to earn customer loyalty and to ensure that the frequent
traveler flies only with one airline. Frequent travelers should take
advantage of this competition, choose a preferred airline and reap the
benefits.

Shared Benefits Explained

Most airlines that offer elite status for frequent fliers share a few attributes in common. These include:

Double points: When airlines offer 100% mileage bonuses, they give
their elite members twice as many miles for each flight. (Likewise, 25%
mileage bonuses refers to offering 1.25 as many miles each flight.)
Double points help frequent fliers become eligible for rewards based on
mileage twice as quickly.

Flight upgrades: Depending on the individual airline plan, elite
members can be entitled to free flight upgrades. This usually refers to
a better class seat.

Credit card savings and mileage bonuses: With a special elite
credit card, purchases even outside of the airport can help accumulate
cash back and free miles that count toward flights.

United Airlines

United has three levels of elite status in their "Mileage Plus" program:

Premier: Baggage fee exemption; 25% and minimum mileage bonuses;
discount membership in the Red Carpet Club (exclusive airport
clubhouses); priority standby and reservations; and credit card savings
and bonus miles.

Premier Executive: All of the Premier benefits (but 100% mileage
bonuses) plus priority check-in; priority boarding; and more baggage
allowance.

1K: All of the Premier Executive benefits plus exclusive flight
upgrades; access to exclusive airport lounges; and more credit card
savings and mileage bonuses.

United also offers additional rewards for
every million miles traveled, including lifetime membership in Premier
Status and their Red Carpet Club, free upgrades and gifts.

American Airlines

American Airlines also has three levels of elite status in their "AAdvantage" program:

Gold: Complimentary earned upgrades; 25% and minimum mileage
bonuses and savings; preferred economy seating; special assistance at
check-in; waived baggage fees; discounted Admirals Club membership
(exclusive airport clubhouses); credit card savings and bonus miles;
discounts at select stores and businesses; and priority check-in,
security screening and boarding.

Platinum: All of the Gold benefits (but 100% mileage bonuses) plus access to an exclusive airport lounge.

Executive Platinum: All of the Platinum benefits plus unlimited
upgrades; wait list priority and flight upgrades for first class seats;
guaranteed economy class seats; and waived ticketed service and
AAdvantage processing charges.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines' SkyMiles program includes four different levels:

Silver: Free flight upgrades; priority seating, wait list, check-in
and seating; 25-50% mileage bonuses; waived baggage fees; and a
discount on Delta Sky Club membership (exclusive airport clubhouses).

Gold: All of the Silver benefits (except 50-100% mileage bonuses)
plus same-day standby and confirmation; and priority security screening.

Platinum: All of the Gold benefits, plus plus waived redemption and
award redeposit fees; priority baggage handling; access to the SkyTeam
lounge at airports; and one bonus gift.

Diamond: All of the Platinum benefits (except 50-125% mileage bonuses) plus an additional bonus gift.

Achieving elite status with an airline is a smart idea
for the frequent and business traveler, whose frequent flier miles
accumulate with each flight and may as well be put toward making the
additional trips more comfortable, convenient and affordable.

Emirates Airlines offers a number of in-flight features and
amenities that cater to your needs in two key areas: service and
technology. These are important to all business travelers, but
especially if you have to travel long distances. Here's what you can
expect on most flights:

Cabin Features

Emirates Airlines emphasizes comfort as part of the flight
experience. To that end, you'll find comfortable sleeper seats and wide
aisles. You won't feel so cramped on board, which is crucial for
long-distance travel. Business Class offers three features for you to
keep working while on board:

Laptop charging

Silent message service

Phone and email

When you're done working, you may be able to sleep on a lie-flat
seat on select routes. You can also watch a television program or film
on a screen in the seat-back directly in front of you. If you ride in
Economy Class, you can enjoy a lot of space between seats in the cabin.

Ice Digital Widescreen

How often do you get to pause or rewind a movie in-flight? You can
if you're on an Emirates Airlines flight, because of the Ice Digital
Widescreen technology. You can choose more than 1,000 channels
including movies during your flight, and control how you watch any
movie. You could also keep track of your flight on the widescreen. If
you don't care to watch television, you can enjoy music, news and
interviews on Emirates Airlines' radio, which offers 26 audio channels
from around the world.

Dining

In First Class, you can expect a seven course meal for lunch and
dinner. Breakfast includes three hot dishes for long flights. You can
also order multiple course meals, in addition to what's already offered
at any time. On a Business Class flight, the lunch and dinner meals are
five courses, while the breakfast dishes remain the same. Economy Class
includes two course lunch and dinner meals, but no breakfast.

You can also order a variety of wines and champagne to accompany
meals, except for flights to Saudi Arabia. The options for types of
wine and champagne available coincides with what class you're booked
in. For example, First Class has six options for wines and champagne,
while Economy only has three. The wine list for flights includes Red
Bordeaux, White Australian and White French.

Lounges

There are several lounges worldwide available to passengers of
Emirates Airlines. However, you must travel in First or Business Class
to gain access. If you're looking for a meal before or after your
flight, you can find gourmet food in any of the lounges. The food is
usually laid out as a buffet for customers. You can also take a shower,
or watch television or a movie while waiting in the lounge. If you'd
like to get some work done, each lounge has business centers with the
technology you need, such as broadband and wireless Internet.

With
all of the features and amenities offered by Emirates Airlines, you're
sure to arrive at your destination well rested. The technology will
also provide you with the opportunity to take care of business before
or during your flight.

Green air travel measures are being taken by the airline
industry to help protect the environment. Here are some changes that
are being made within the industry.

Winglets

Winglets are the vertical extensions at the end of the airplane
wing. Winglets help reduce the drag flow of the plane and turn the drag
into thrust. Winglets have been around for some time, but more and more
airlines are mandating their use. Approximately 95% of the airline
fleet operating worldwide is now fitted with winglets. Boeing claims
"that winglets on 737s and 757s have saved more than 1.2 billion
gallons of fuel since they were first introduced, and 11.5 million tons
of CO2 (a reduction of 6.5%)."

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency has been steadily improving for the past 40 years.
Operations have become more than 20% more fuel efficient in the past 10
years, and in the past 15 years oxides of nitrogen have been reduced by
50% from aircraft engines. Since 1970, CO2 emissions have reduced by
50% and emissions of hydrocarbons have reduced by 90%. Approximately
15% of turnover to research is dedicated by aircraft engineers. It is
estimated that modern airplanes are using a little over one gallon of
fuel per 100 passenger miles. Less fuel equals less emissions.

Strict Emission Certification Standards

Emission certification standards are being strictly held up by the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and now provide more
than a 40% reduction in emissions from 1981. The certification is used
to keep hydrocarbons, CO2 and smoke at a strict standard for safety,
and a less harmful standard to the environment. Research is hoping for
an even stricter standard that would reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by
80% by the year 2020.

Eco-Marketing Programs

Eco-friendly programs are becoming more prevalent with individual
airlines, and are geared towards their frequent flyers. The
Eco-Marketing programs are interactive programs that members can use to
make environmentally sustainable choices, and earn green rewards in the
process.

One such program is called My Planet, owned by LoyaltyOne Inc. My
Planet allows its members to redeem their air miles for environmentally
friendly rewards. Some of the rewards offered by My Planet are
eco-friendly cleaning products, donations to eco-friendly research and
eco friendly campaigns, green energy services and transit passes.

Jet Blue has introduced a new program called "Jetting to Green", and
encourages passengers to sign up and make a pledge to do "One Thing
That's Green." Another eco-friendly program offered by Jet Blue
Airlines is called CarbonFund.Org, where crew member travel on company
business is offset by making a contribution to Carbonfund.org.

Recycling

In flight recycling is quickly becoming a popular initiative that
most major airlines are implementing on all flights. Crew members and
passengers are encouraged to sort their plastic, glass and cans for
recycling. Once the airplane has landed, the recycled materials are
then sent to their appropriate recycling area.

Protecting the environment is a major concern for the airlines, and
more and more measures are being taken to help offset the industry's
carbon footprint.

JetBlue Airways has always prided itself in its approach to
customer service. As a result, the in-flight features and amenities
that JetBlue offers are often on the cutting edge of airline travel.

Even More Legroom

JetBlue Airways now offers you the opportunity to purchase a seat
with even more legroom. The cost of an 'even more legroom' seat is an
extra $10. These seats are offered on the Airbus A320 fleet, and are
located at the front of the airplane. The seats provide you with
approximately 38 inches of legroom, that will make it easy to relax and
watch DirecTV.

Plus TV

Plus TV is JetBlue's brand new TV network that features a top rated
shows and news programs. The channel is one of many available, located
on your in flight monitor. Jetblue is known for offering individual TV
monitors to each traveler on board the plane. You can watch movies,
play games and even interact with other people on board your flight.
Plus TV also features programming edited and created by the New York
Times and the Broadway Channel.

JetBlue Features

JetBlue Features offers you a variety of DirecTV options that
include bonus entertainment, such as behind-the-scenes looks at top
rated TV shows, as well as sneak previews of movies that have yet to be
released in theaters. In addition, JetBlue Features includes interviews
with top celebrities and world class athletes. Movies on board most
JetBlue Airways flights cost $6, and are available on all long haul and
medium flights.

In Flight Snacks

Unlike many other airlines, JetBlue does not offer in flight meals. Some on board snacks and drinks include:

Soda

Peanuts

Crackers

Jetblue lunch packs

In flight snacks also feature a variety of JetBlue Airways cheeses and prepared sandwiches.

Checked Bags

When flying JetBlue airways, you can check one bag for free. A
second bag will cost you an additional $30. Each additional bag after
this costs $75. You're allowed to bring one carry-on item on board, but
it cannot exceed the dimensions of the overhead storage bin, 24 by 16
by 10 inches. If you plan on bringing a musical instrument on board,
it's possible to check the bag. If it's a fragile item, you are able to
bring it on board and either purchase a separate seat for it or place
it in the coat check.

Assigned Seating

If you are flying on board a JetBlue Airways flight, it's possible
to reserve a specific seat for no additional fee. Go on JetBlue's
official website to choose the seat of your choice. JetBlue does not
supply you with an in flight magazine, so bring your own personal
reading materials. The average legroom on a JetBlue flight is a seat
pitch of 32 to 34 inches. There are no First Class seats on JetBlue
flights.

Hawaiian Airlines specializes in flights to and from Hawaii.
The airline has a variety of in flight features and amenities that
vary, depending on the duration of the flight you're on.

Menus

Hawaiian Airlines' menus are specially crafted by Chef Beverly
Gannon of Hali'imaile General Store. Chef Gannon's menu offers
everything from breakfast pastries and fruit plates, to jack cheese
enchiladas and scrambled eggs with ranchero sauce. A different menu is
available for flights to different parts of the US. For example,
refreshments found on Hawaiian Airlines flights from the South Pacific
to Hawaii are different than flights going from Hawaii to to the U.S.
mainland. Hawaiian Airlines also offers late night menus that include
everything from black bean soup to potato macaroni salad. Each class on
Hawaiian offers a different menu, and as you get higher in class you
find higher quality foods and dishes.

In Flight Movies

In flight movies depend on the duration of your flight. For coach
passengers, each movie costs a flat fee of $5. If you're flying in
business or first class, all movies are complimentary. If you're flying
to the South Pacific, most Hawaiian Airlines flights will offer two
movies during your flight.

Special Services

Hawaiian Airlines accommodates people and families with unique needs
and considerations. If you're flying with your family, Hawaiian will
offer you a free ticket for any infant traveling with you. However,
you're not allowed to bring an extra carry on or any checked baggage
for the infant. Age two is the cutoff to be considered an infant on
Hawaiian Airlines. If you or someone you're flying with has a
disability, the airline will make sure to provide adequate service for
you or your friend.

First Class

Hawaiian Airlines' first class cabin offers you everything from
first rate meals to your own personal TV. Each television comes with
movies, games, TV shows and a variety of other things that will keep
you entertained throughout the duration of your flight. First Class
seats are large and offer extended reclining, which make it easy to
sleep through your entire flight. If you're part of Hawaiian Airlines'
frequent flier club, you can earn a free First Class flight through
miles.

Business Class

If you're flying Business Class to or from Hawaii, you'll be
rewarded with free movies, in flight refreshments and more. The seats
are not as spacious as First Class, but Business gives you a sizable
amount of room and space to work with. The seats recline, and there's
above average overhead storage room for you to place your personal
carry on items in. Business Class also offers desserts to travelers
flying during the evening.

Asiana Airlines is one of two major airlines in South Korea.

First Class

On board any First Class Asiana Airlines flight, you'll be treated
to a large chair that fully reclines into a bed. The chair is encased
in a plastic cubby that has everything from a personal lamp to a flat
screen TV. Other in flight amenities include complimentary pillows,
wine, in flight meals and more. First Class meals are based around a
constantly revolving menu. Each menu is tailored to the time of the
year and often include "Kyoto-Kaiseki", a traditional Japanese dish.
Asiana Airlines' First Class services also include wine and beverages,
chosen by wine specialists. Drinks are complimentary for all First
Class travelers, unless you're ordering a premium beverage.

First Class Amenities

Specific First Class amenities include casual pajamas, a Bulgari
amenity kit and more. Complimentary cards, stationery and postcards are
available. If you have a minor medical problem while in the air, basic
medications are on board and offered for no additional cost. It's even
possible to send a fax while on board a long distance flight.

In Flight Entertainment

IVS (Individual Video Systems) are available on board all of Asiana
Airlines flights and allow you to choose whatever movie or TV show you
want to watch, when you want to watch it. You're able to choose from a
wide variety of movies and games during your flight, and it's even
possible to watch TV shows that are in real time.

Business Class

Business Class seats don't fully recline, but do recline to a seat
pitch of 50 inches and sometimes more. Business Class offers you
everything from a satellite phone to a fax machine. Internet
connections are available, as well as your own personal television
screen.

Travel Class

Travel Class is Asiana Airlines' version of economy class. Each seat
comes with a personal in flight entertainment device, as well as
folding table which is ideal for eating meals and holding beverages.
Most in flight meals in travel class are equivalent to snacks, usually
comprised of a drink, salad and some form of meat. If you are a
vegetarian, gluten free, or ordering a kosher meal, these types of food
are all available upon request. Travel Class also brews environmentally
friendly coffee that's available for free. A satellite phone is
available for you to use for a nominal fee, and it can be accessed from
the comfort of your own seat.

Singapore Airlines is a state-owned airline, based out of
Singapore and specializing in trips to Asia. The in flight
entertainment found on Singapore Airlines competes with most major
airlines worldwide.

KrisWorld

KrisWorld is Singapore Airlines' unique in flight entertainment
service, offering you everything from movies to games and applications.
KrisWorld is located on the back of individual airline seats and is
operated by a touch screen function. In addition to movies, it provides
you with in flight entertainment that extends to your personal computer
and in flight phone. KrisWorld is not available on every Singapore
Airlines Plane. You'll find it on A380, A340-500, A330-300, Boeing
777-300ER and several other select Singapore Airlines aircraft.

Fine Dining

Singapore Airlines' in flight meals range from lavish dinners to
simple breakfast dishes. Using the unique 'book the cook' function, you
can order your meal in advance of your flight. Orders must be processed
24 hours before your scheduled flight. Food options vary depending on
whether you're flying first class, business or economy.

In flight meals in first class are chosen from a menu crafted by
Singapore Airlines' unique culinary experts. Complimentary wines and
champagnes are also available with a meal or by themselves.

Business class meals range from snacks to Hangoyomi. Described as a
blend of the four seasons, Hangoyomi is a dish that combines four
unique flavors into one dish. You can order this meal on all business
class flights as well as select economy class flights.

Suites

While most airlines simply offer first class accommodations,
Singapore Airlines offers suites, exclusively on their A380 planes.
Suites are small but private rooms with everything you need to enjoy a
relaxing flight. They come complete with beds, flat screen TVs, a turn
down service and even your own personal closet. Unlike some cabins that
offer seats that convert into beds, Suites come with a standalone bed,
in addition to your own seat. The seats also come with individual
headset jacks and remote control devices that make accessing your in
flight entertainment easier.

Business Class

Business class seats recline with adjustable presets. Each seat is
made of quality leather, and offer headrests and adequate lower lumbar
support. Business class accommodations vary depending on the type of
plane you're on. For long haul flights, business class seats will
transform into beds. Business passengers get one complimentary meal, as
well as numerous free beverages.

Economy Class

Singapore Airlines offers personal seat-back mounted handsets, as
well as personal entertainment systems for all passengers. There are
more than 1,000 in flight entertainment options for you in economy
class, which makes it easy for long flights to go by quickly. Because
Singapore Airlines specializes in long distance flights, the design of
each airplane keeps your extended comfort in mind. Economy class also
offers complimentary in flight meals and drinks.

Delta Airlines has done an excellent job at finding new and exciting in flight features to keep you happy and relaxed, both before and after takeoff.

Delta Airlines Cabins

Delta Airlines separates their cabins into three distinct parts:

Business Elite Class

First Class

Economy Class

Delta Airlines Business Elite

Business
Elite offers reclining seats on all international flights. These are
not found on every plane (only on 767- 400 (76d)), but these reclining
seats are ideal for long international flights. Business Elite offers
travelers PC power as well as brand new entertainment systems. Each
seat comes with its own personal TV screen that stores more than 50
hours of HBO and 100 unique programs. Business Elite passengers get
priority check in at the airport.

Delta Airlines First Class

Offering travelers everything from leather chairs to brand new
glassware and china, First Class does everything in its power to make
you comfortable. First Class offers complimentary cocktails that are
developed by Rande Gerber. Other complimentary items include gourmet
nuts and ice cream truffles. Most of the in flight meals come from a
custom menu, developed by top chef Michelle Bernstein. Delta Airlines
First Class also comes with comfortable pillows and blankets that are
unique to that section.

Delta Airlines Economy Class

Delta Airlines Economy Class offers fewer amenities than First Class
and Business Class. If you've brought your laptop on board, in flight
internet access is available for a small fee. There's a selection of
movies, TV and trivia games available during flights. Earthbound Farm
helps provide you with healthy and tasty in flight snack options. Drink
services are provided, but unlike First Class and Business Class, you
have to pay for them. Chef Todd English helped to develop the Economy
Class menu, and all of the items are available for purchase while in
the air. Travelers are also offered headsets in economy class.

In Flight Products

Delta Airlines offers two on-air magazines that allow you to make in
flight purchases, as well as research interesting locations. Sky
Magazine was developed by Delta Airlines and focuses on interesting
restaurants, museums and shops in locations all over the world. If you
happen to be traveling to London, Sky Magazine will give you
suggestions on premiere restaurants in the city center. Sky Magazine
will also give you some suggestions regarding premium tourist
destinations in the area.

Delta's SkyMall magazine sells specialty items such as golf bags,
arm chairs and more. These items are available to purchase via phone,
internet and even during the flight.

Entertainment

In flight entertainment is offered to guests in two different ways.
Overhead movies come standard in economy class, and are easy to look up
on Delta's official website. The in flight magazines will show you what
is playing. Movies run for two weeks on commercial flights. If you are
on a premium flight, Delta on demand offers you everything from HBO,
mp3s, movies and more. You can listen to everything from Country to
Soul Soothers stations.

class passengers are privy to leather seats with spacious leg room,
6-way adjustable headrest and maximum reclining abilities.
Complimentary alcoholic beverages are served preflight and during,
including a premium wine selection. Other amenities that set First
Class and Business Class apart include:

Fine dining

Hot towel service

Free checked baggage

Bonus miles for Elite members

Amenity kits

All travelers flying on any Continental operated flight have access
to the Sky Mall magazine located in the seat pocket in front of them.
On-board shopping can be a great way to pass the time, as well as earn
frequent flyer miles on every dollar spent towards Sky Mall purchases.

Baggage

Most airline companies have adopted a new policy to start charging
for checked baggage. Continental has not been immune to this. There are
many ways to get your baggage to your destination without paying:
Continental Airlines Chase Card members get their first checked bag fee
waived, and Continental Airlines Presidential Plus Card members now get
their first two bags checked for free. If you are part of the One Pass
Frequent Flyer program and reach Elite Silver, Gold or Platinum status
you can count on always getting two checked bags on the flight without
paying a cent.

Small domesticated pets are still allowed in the cabin of
Continental flights in lieu of carry-on baggage. Continental does,
however, charge a $125 fee for carry-on pets. One pet per passenger.

Southwest Airlines is known for its value and service. As a result, many of Southwest's in flight features are designed to minimize costs and maximize efficiency.

Southwest Airlines In Flight Drinks

Southwest Airlines is very much a value and commuter airline that
specializes in local and short distance flights. Most of the in flight
features are based around airline snacks. On Southwest's official
website, you are able to view their entire in flight menu.
Non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary on all Southwest flights and
include:

Coca-Cola Classic

Sprite

Coke Zero

Dr. Pepper

Ginger Ale

Tonic Water

Mr. and Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix

In addition to non-alcoholic drinks, Southwest offers everything
from Jack Daniels to fine wines. If you need a boost, you can order in
flight coffee and low carb energy drinks. Alcoholic beverages cost $5
each.

Southwest Airlines In Flight Snacks

Some snacks that are found on board a typical Southwest flight include:

Peanuts

Pretzels

A variety of Nabisco brand selections

Southwest Airlines does not offer any full meals. This is another way Southwest is able to offer cheap flights to major cities.

Free Checked Baggage

Unlike other competing airlines, Southwest allows you to check two
bags for free. While other airlines may charge $20 to $30 per bag,
Southwest Airlines allows you to bring two bags, under 50 pounds, free
of charge.

In Flight Entertainment

Southwest Airlines has recently partnered up with Movielink.com, a
sight that allows you to watch movies on your laptop while you're in
the air. Southwest doesn't offer in flight internet services, so you
must download a movie via movielink before you board your flight. Films
range from $1.99 to $4.99, and there is a wide variety for you to
choose from. Despite this partnership, most Southwest Airlines flights
do not offer in flight monitors or TV screens. This is another way
Southwest is able to keep costs down.

Other Southwest Airlines Amenities

Southwest's Spirit Magazine, available on board, has informative
articles that discuss locations and destinations around the world, and
gives you tips with respect to places to eat and hotspots in your
destination. The magazine also has a section devoted to maps of cities
and locations that you may potentially visit.

You can ask your flight attendant for a pack of playing cards as another in flight entertainment option.

Seating Arrangements

Southwest Airlines does not offer assigned seating, resulting in
seats being organized by groups. If you checked in early, you will be
rewarded with a higher group. In addition to these group arrangements,
you are also assigned a specific number (such as A5). If you have
checked in early and are assigned A5, you will check in before the
person who has been assigned A13.

United First allows you to grab drinks prior to departure. The drinks
offered in this area range from beer and wine to fresh brewed Starbucks
coffee. You'll also have access to complimentary movies, headsets and
meal service on flights longer than 2 hours. Movies are only shown on

that is located in the armrest of your seat. In addition to premium
movies and TV shows, this system offers you the chance to play
interactive video and trivia games. If you're flying internationally,
United Business Class offers a pre-flight beverage service. All United
Business Class flights offer a menu designed by chef Charlie Trotter.

Another in flight feature that is unique to United Business Class is
the patented Business Class Seat. It offers full lumbar support and the
ability to adjust both the leg and arm rests.

United Airlines Meal Service

A warm meal is provided on flights longer than 2 hours. If you are
flying United First, the in flight features are much more extensive,
and range from chilled salads topped with shrimp, to steakhouse
tenderloin beef. If you're flying Economy, you'll have to pay for your
meal. Most meals range from $3 to $7 an item. Snacks are around $3 and
include peanuts and crackers. Snackboxes are around $7, and include a
piece of fruit, crackers and several other items. If you're flying
Economy, you can purchase a full meal for around $9.

On international flights, you can have everything from traditional
Japanese cuisine to gourmet local meals. Flights will often offer meals
that are specific to the region you are flying to.

Make sure you become familiar with airline luggage guidelines if
you are planning to bring your ski or snowboard equipment with you when
you fly. It is best to know ahead of time what restrictions your
airline may have on traveling with ski equipment.

Ski or Snowboard Bag

If you bring your skis or snowboard with you on a trip, you will
need to purchase a bag in which to place your ski equipment. There are
a variety of ski bag:

Padded

Light padding

No padding

Hard shell

Some, especially the hard shell, even have wheels on one end of the
bag, making it easier to walk your ski equipment through the airport.

The hard shell protects your ski equipment best, but whatever you
choose, you should add additional padding to make sure that tough
handling on the part of the airline doesn't result in damage to your
equipment. Make sure to put jeans or a small coat at each end of the
ski bag. Many airlines will only compensate you for damage to your ski
equipment if it is in a hard shell bag.

How to Pack Equipment

One way to prevent scratching or other damage is to tape your skis
together, so they won't shift when they are picked up. You can also
tape your poles to the skis. Just fit the skis together and then put
the poles upside down, so they will fit against the skis.

Again, some padding on each end is a good idea, as well as around
the bindings. While some people opt to check their boots, many prefer
to carry their boots on board, either in a small bag or tied together
and over their shoulders. They can then be stowed in an overhead
container or under the seat.

Check-In

Most airlines consider a ski bag, although oversized, just one piece
of luggage. If there are fees for checked luggage, these will apply to
your ski bag. If you're flying First Class or are an Elite member of
the airline, you will probably have these charges waived. For example,
American Airlines, Continental and United Airlines charge $15, $25 and
$100 for first, second and third checked bags, with a 50 pound limit.
Delta charges $15, $25 and $125. Most airlines consider the ski bag and
the boot bag as one piece of luggage. Southwest is the best deal, with
fees of $0, $0 and $25. One pair of skis, poles and boots count as one
item, as well as one snowboard and pair of boots. Skis longer than 62
inches are charged a $50 oversize fee.

Another Option

Rather than bringing your equipment with you on your plane, you
could have it shipped to your destination and have it ready to use when
you arrive. This may prove more expensive, but more convenient.

Airlines allow airline luggage of all kinds, including scuba
gear. Most airlines allow scuba gear to be checked in as regular
airline luggage. This means that you can even carry on some of your
gear, or check it all in as luggage.

Carry-On Gear

Among the gear that you may want to carry on include:

Regulators

Buoyancy compensators

Masks

Snorkels

Fins

Compressed gas cylinders are not carry-on items and must be checked
in, unless the regulator valve on the cylinder is completely
disconnected from it, and the cylinder is not sealed. This means that
the cylinder has one open end to allow for an inspection of the inside.
Airport security officers are not allowed to remove a seal or regulator
valve from the cylinder at the security checkpoint. If your cylinder is
sealed and the regulator valve is attached, your cylinder will not be
permitted through security. It's best to check it in if you are
uncertain about how to unseal your cylinder.

Luggage Guidelines

Most airlines have similar luggage guidelines regarding scuba
equipment, but the charges are all a little different. Check with the
particular carrier before appearing at the airport. As an example, US
Airways accepts scuba diving equipment (including the scuba tank) as
checked baggage for about $100. However, if you don't include the scuba
tank, the other items can go as a normal baggage allowance, in place of
a piece of luggage. All gear is subject to overweight and oversize
fees. Many other airlines charge for all checked
luggage.

Packing Gear

You'll want to purchase a special scuba gear bag when you travel.
These bags, which are made by scuba equipment manufacturers, have
special compartments and pockets for each of your scuba gear parts. If
you're traveling as a couple, there are large gear bags big enough to
hold scuba gear for two people.

To ensure you don't find your mask damaged when you arrive at your
destination, pack your mask in a hard case to protect it. If you don't
have a case for your mask, you can easily buy one at a dive shop. To
make sure that your fins travel without getting damaged, put them sole
to sole and wrap them in a towel before putting them in your bag. You
can also use a large plastic freezer bag for your dive log and other
items. They can then be packed in an exterior pocket.

The boarding procedures of airlines often differ from airline
to airline, and it's a good idea to be familiar with the various kinds
that exist. That way, you will know what to expect when it's time to
board your flight.

Reverse Pyramid Boarding

Reverse pyramid is one kind of boarding procedure, and although it
is not widely used, it is an effective way for boarding passengers.
Until recently, US Airways used the reverse pyramid boarding method.
This means that top frequent flyers and Star Alliance Gold elites from
partner airlines are seated first in First Class or Area 1 and Area 2.
Non-elites are then seated in areas 3 to 5. After seating passengers
requiring extra assistance, US would board those passengers who had
seats in the rear of the plane, starting with the furthest back, and so
on, until everyone is boarded.

Rotating Zone Boarding

Another popular method of loading passengers is rotating zone
boarding, which is used by AirTran. In this case, Business Class
passengers are first to board, followed by the seats in the back five
rows of the plane. Next comes the first five rows of coach. Hence the
name, as boarding rotates back and forth between the back and front
zones of the airplane.

Outside-In Boarding

United Airlines prefers the outside-in boarding plan, which is also
referred to as "WiMA," (Window, Middle, and Aisle). This process is
intended to speed up boarding and eliminate the scenario of a person
seated in an aisle seat, who has to get up to let the passenger in the
window seat by.

Rear-to-Front Boarding

The rear to front method of boarding is popular on American Airlines
flights, as well as many domestic and international carriers. After
first class passengers and those with special needs are boarded,
passengers in the rear zones are loaded, followed by the middle zones
and then the first zones of coach.

Zone/Block Boarding

Delta Airline employs a zone/block style of boarding that divides
the airplane into as many as nine zones. First class passengers and
those in the front rows of Coach are in Zone 1. Zone 2 passengers,
consisting of Delta/Northwest's Elite Frequent Fliers, board next.
Delta's partner airlines' Elite members then board in Zone 4. The other
zones are loaded from the rear to the front of Coach.

Random Boarding

Southwest Airlines uses random boarding. That means Southwest
doesn't assign seats, so getting into the first seating group is highly
desirable. Otherwise you may end up in a middle seat. There is some
sort of boarding order in that the time you check in determines what
boarding group you will be part of. The earlier you check in, the more

American Airlines offers travelers a wide array of in flight features
and amenities. While some of these amenities may seem standard when it
comes to traditional air travel, others are unique to American Airlines.

American Airlines In Flight Features

Cabin comfort is a main concern of the employees at American
Airlines. As a result, all cabins come complete with seats that have
their own customized cushions. Each one of these cushions is designed
for maximum passenger comfort. In addition, travelers can now enjoy
large and extended overhead bins, so you'll have no problem storing
your carry-on items.

If you're flying First Class, American Airlines will make sure that
all of your in flight features are first rate. Some in flight features
that are specific to First Class include:

Premium Cabin Duvet Amenity Kit

Swivel Seat

Electronic Adjustable Seats

Electronic Recline

Personal Reading Lights

In addition to these many amenities, first class travelers will also
enjoy individual powerport connections for laptops, as well as
individual satellite telephones. While most of these features come
standard on all American Airlines first class flights, some of these
are specific to Flagship Suite First Class. Flagship Suite First Class
is only available on Boeing 777 aircrafts, and takes in flight features
to a whole new level. The seats that are found in Flagship Suite First
Class are geared toward passengers who like to sleep on flights. As a
result, the seats fully recline, as do the armrests, allowing for extra
space and maximum comfort.

American Airlines In Flight Entertainment

On domestic flights that travel from coast to coast, American
Airlines now offers travelers their very own in flight entertainment
options. In flight entertainment used to come from TVs fastened to the
top of storage bins, but travelers are now able to enjoy TV and movie
options from the comfort of their own seat. The premium media player is
offered in both business and first class, and allows travelers to
choose from more than 28 feature films, tons of CDs, games and so much
more. The personal media player is activated by a touch screen which
makes it extremely user friendly.

If you grow tired of visual entertainment, American Airlines offers
travelers a variety of popular and unique magazines to choose from.
Some titles include:

American Way

Celebrated Living

Latitudes

Each one of these magazines offers travelers a unique way to learn
about the destinations they are traveling to. In addition to magazines,
there are TV episodes and radio channels for you to enjoy. As a bonus,
all American Airlines flights offer complimentary headsets to
travelers. These will come in handy if you happen to forget your
headset at home or if you don't own your own headset.

If you are looking for a meal during your flight, chances are you
are going to have to pay for it. Most meals are no longer free on board
American Airlines flights, so it's in your best interest to bring your
own snacks and food on board.

Airline luggage guidelines can be complex, and that's why
it's helpful to understand the regulations that various ones have for
transporting your golf clubs. One thing is clear: you cannot bring your
golf clubs into the cabin of the airplane. You will definitely have to
check them in. Some airlines will offer you a golf club travel case
free of charge, as long as the clubs fit into the bag. Airlines
typically allow one golf bag that has 14 clubs and 12 golf balls, along
with one pair of shoes.

Types of Bags

Most seasoned golf players own their own golf club travel case.
There are several types to choose from. The choices are: soft shell,
hard shell and hybrid, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Hard shell bags
are usually large and are made from high impact plastic or a similar
material. You can put your own golf bag inside. Be aware, however, that
they are heavier and you will have to make sure that they don't surpass
weight restrictions that airlines have. Soft cases are not
usually the best for air travel, simply because they are soft and your
clubs won't be totally protected. You should check with your airline,
since some will provide hard cases that you can put your soft case
into. If your airline does provide you with a case, your clubs are
insured by it. Otherwise, you should cover your clubs with your own
insurance.

Hybrid golf travel bags are the latest thing in the golf
travel world and offer the best of both features. The case is soft on
the outside, but hard enough on the inside to avoid you having to sign
a waiver in case of damage. The soft cover usually has pockets where
you can store golf accessories, or some of your clothes.

It's possible that you won't even realize that a hybrid bag is a
golf travel bag because it looks so much like a carry bag. But upon
closer examination, you'll see it is different. The only disadvantage
to the hybrid bag is that it's more expensive.

Charges

Most airlines will treat your golf club case as a piece of luggage.
If your airline is charging for checked bags, to save money, you might
want to carry on your other bags. The second checked bag is usually
more expensive than the first. Check with your particular airline for
specific charges and other regulations.

Check-In

When you check in golf clubs, you will have to open your case to
have them check for security. Make sure you stay until the inspection
is completed, so you can ensure that the golf bag is locked up tight.
Sometimes security personnel can inadvertently leave them open, and the
golf clubs could conceivably fall out of the case in mid-flight.

In all cases, make sure to check with your airline if you are unsure of its guidelines for travel with golf clubs.
